Annual Event “Looking Forward, Giving Back”
Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California CENTER Summer 2012 | Volume 35 Annual Event “Looking Forward, Giving Back” on September 29 The JCCCNC is hosting its annual fundraising event, “Looking Forward, Giving Back” on Saturday, September 29 at the JCCCNC on 1840 Sutter Street in San Francisco. Hawaii’s famous Side Street Inn will return as the featured restaurant, once again serving up their local favorites! Also, look for new and returning Bay Area chefs and restaurants presenting exciting appetizers during our Silent Auction. With over 400 guests from the Bay Area, Los Angeles and Hawaii we invite you to join us as we celebrate and look forward to the future and help us honor NBC Bay Area and the late, Mrs. Masako Martha Suzuki. At this year’s event, we will posthumously honor Masako Martha Suzuki for her on-going contributions and vision of giving back to the community that enabled the JCCCNC to create programs like the Shinzen Goodwill Program and the Takahashi Youth Ambassador Fellowship Program which encourage and develop Japanese cultural education for the youth in our community. We will also honor NBC Bay Area for their continued work supporting community organizations and for their significant role in the promotion and success of our Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. This year, join us as we celebrate and honor those that have and continue to give back to our community, our home. The event will begin at 4:00 p.m. and will conclude at approximately 8:00 p.m. It will take place throughout the entire building, there will also be live and silent auctions including items donated from Japantown restaurants and businesses. Ticket prices are $175 for reserved table seating and $50 for children 6-12 years old. This event sold out last year, so call soon to reserve your seat. Invitations will be mailed mid-July. Message from the Deputy Director It’s summer - a fun time for all of us at the JCCCNC! Whether it’s the hundreds of kids coming each day for JCYC summer camp; watching the moves of ZUMBA dancers on Sundays; hosting workshops for our Takahashi Youth Ambassador Fellows; feeling the beat of the matsuri-style taiko; families watching their children play in summer basketball leagues; or starting the internship for our Kase Nikkei Community Scholarship participants...they all bring an enormous amount of energy to the Center and for me, they are all a source of INSPIRATION! I have been very fortunate, thanks to many of you – members, donors, friends and family - to be able to work at the JCCCNC and gain a greater appreciation and passion for giving back to this community and create opportunities for young people to feel the same motivation and sense of obligation to this Japantown community that I do. As we continue planning our Annual Event with the theme of “looking forward, giving back,” I’ve come to understand that we must constantly reimagine the lifecycle or life “circle” of the Center. Like a circle, with no start or no end; so is the life of the Center. With each generation, we need to plant the seeds so youth can truly look at and understand their history, culture and heritage, and then, eventually, they will return and give back to the community that helped shape who they are. This summer, I am really excited to work with our ten Takahashi Fellows and begin “planting the seeds,” teaching them the importance of our history and heritage, so they can better understand who they are and what type of impact they can have as a future leader in our community. I am equally enthusiastic, if not more, for the opportunity to work with our six college-aged interns. (You can learn more about them on page 4.) Three of them have come from past JCCCNC programs and the others have come from their own communities, but they all feel that it is their time to “give back,” re-establish their connection with the community, and learn more. I hope you will allow them to learn from you, as well, as you are all a part of the Center’s circle. Knowing who helped bring this Center to life, why people support the Center and its mission and who uses the Center are all important parts of sustaining this circle for generations who are yet to be born. Understanding the who, why and how behind the Center will allow these young adults to fully grasp the responsibility they have in front of them. I invite you to come by the Center this summer, participate in a program or event, feel the energy, meet our Interns and Fellows, and remind yourself how important this Center is to our community, our future! Looking forward to seeing you soon! Sincerely, Lori Matoba Deputy Director With each generation, we need to plant the seeds so youth can truly look at and understand their history, culture and heritage, and then, eventually, they will return and give back to the community that helped shape who they are. Now available to view at the JCCCNC is the exhibit featuring two paintings (Fisherman’s Wharf and Harbor) that reflects Taira’s journey through art and life. Frank Taira, the son of immigrants from Okinawa, was born in San Francisco and was met with much adversity throughout his life, but faced each challenge with an art brush in one hand and fortitude in the other. At the age of 15, Taira stayed in the U.S. when his parents returned to Okinawa with his siblings so he could complete his education in California. He supported himself by working as a “house boy” for an American family and graduated from Lowell High School in 1934. Taira was a self-taught artist who later studied at the California School of Fine Arts (1935-1938), Columbia University (1945), Arts Student League (1956) and New School for Social Research (1957). Taira’s promising art career, which included an invitation for a solo exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Art (now the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) in 1939, was interrupted when he was incarcerated in the Topaz, Utah Internment Camp from 1942-1944. None of his artwork before WWII survived. While in camp, Taira managed to teach art alongside Chiura Obata, and upon his release moved to New York to focus on his artwork which he hoped would provide beauty, peace and harmony to those who viewed his paintings. “Harbor” by Frank Taira. In a 2005 interview, conducted by Taira’s caregivers asking about how he describes his art, he said “the artist feels (continued on page 17) Looking Forward, Giving Back: Spotlight on the Center’s Youthful New Staff Members Over the years the JCCCNC has understood the importance of educating youth about the history and issues affecting the Japanese American community through programs such as the Shinzen Youth Goodwill Program and the Nikkei Community Internship (NCI) Program. The Center is now seeing many of its past participants in both programs coming back to volunteer, get involved and mentor their own peers. The truest testament of our work and involvement with young people participating in our programs is that many have become staff members at the Center, with nearly half of our entire staff now 30 years or younger. These new staff members bring with them a new vision and strength to our programs as we create future leaders who will work to preserve our Japantown community. Ryan Kimura Director of Programs & Community Affairs JEFF YOSHIOKA Director of Marketing & Membership Development COURTNEY OKUHARA Membership Manager YUMI YUKAWA Development Manager Ryan Kimura, Director of Programs and Community Affairs, and Courtney Okuhara, Membership Manager, were both former NCI participants and agree that the program not only allowed them to see the hard work that goes on behind the scenes at the JCCCNC, but it also opened their eyes to different advocacy, volunteer and career opportunities available to young people in the community. Jeff Yoshioka and Yumi Yukawa are two other young staff members who have joined the Center in the last few years. Jeff is the current Marketing Director and is originally from Hilo, Hawaii. He came to the JCCCNC in 2009 as a marketing consultant and then joined the staff full-time in 2010. Jeff looks forward to continuing to bring greater awareness to the Center’s programs and services, connecting generations to preserve and (continued on page 17) Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California - Summer 2012 3 JCCCNC Community JCCCNC Welcomes New Interns The JCCCNC is proud to announce five new interns, Erika Geer, Casey Ikeda, Sara Matsumoto, Lauren Morimoto and Miya Yung, who will participate in the Kase Nikkei Community Scholarship Program, a yearlong program that allows college students the opportunity to obtain experience supporting the work of various Japanese American community nonprofit organizations. These five students have been selected based on their desire to become involved in the community, preserve culture, enhance community outreach and become community leaders. The Kase Nikkei Community Scholarship Program (Kase Program) consists of two parts–an eight-week summer internship and a nine-month career internship. During the summer internship, students will work in the Programs and Development Departments at the JCCCNC and get a firsthand view of how the organization is able to face challenges and continue to sustain itself for generations to come. They will also learn and share ideas on how they can take an active role in the future preservation of our Center, culture and community. One day of each week is reserved to participate with the Nikkei Community Internship (NCI) program, where they will attend training meetings to develop leadership skills, and meet with community leaders and discuss issues that are affecting local Japantown communities. There will also be three statewide retreats to work with peers in other regions and discuss issues facing the Japanese American community, like the preservation of Japantowns and community leadership. Erika Geer is a fourth year double major in International Relations and Japanese at the University of California at Davis. Actively serving on UC Davis’ Cabinet of the Japanese American Student Society (JASS), Erika enjoys creating various social events for the members as well volunteering for the Sacramento JACL. She joins the Kase Program with hopes to learn the intricate details of how an idea from inception becomes an active program positively impacting the local community—a skill that she intends to apply to her role on the JASS Cabinet and in future work settings. She also looks forward to bettering her understanding of the needs of the Japanese and Japanese American community in the Bay Area. Casey Ikeda recently graduated from University of San Francisco with a degree in U.S. History. Interested in teaching, working in the non-profit sector and law, Casey joined the Kase Program to meet and connect with other young individuals that share his passion of helping the community. “No other internship gives you so much training with non-profit work.” With energy, ideas and hard work, Casey wants to reenergize the Yonsei generation about San Francisco’s Japantown and make sure this community thrives for many years to come. Sara Matsumoto is a fourth year at San Francisco State University majoring in Business and Marketing and minoring in Asian American Studies. Growing up in Southern California, Sara participated in many Japanese American Buddhist programs. She is interested in non-profit organizations specifically focused on the Japanese American community and broadening her skills in public relations, program development JCCCNC WELCOMES INTERNS—(Left to Right) Miya Yung, Erika Geer, Sara Matsumoto, Drew Mametsuka, Lauren Morimoto, Casey Ikeda and marketing. “I feel as if it is our generation’s responsibility to keep our Japanese American community thriving,” says Sara. “Personally, my Japanese American community raised me and I want to make sure the future generations have similar or more opportunities than I had.” Lauren Morimoto is a recent graduate from the University of California at Irvine. Growing up Lauren was highly active in the Japanese American community, participating in the United Japanese Christian Church and multiple Asian summer camps as a camper and a counselor. However, through high school and college she felt as though she lost a sense of connection to her community. “I moved around from Fresno to the Bay Area and before I knew it, I was going to college in Irvine. I was doing my own thing and towards the end of college I found myself wanting to draw back to my roots and give back to the community.” Lauren has joined the Kase Program in hopes to work and connect with folks from different generations of the Japanese American community. A third year majoring in Child and Adolescent Development at San Francisco State University, Miya Yung was introduced to the Japanese American community at a young age by her mother. She participated in the Shinzen USA basketball goodwill exchange program at the JCCCNC, played 10 years for the SF Enchantees and volunteered at Kimochi Home. From high school to college, Miya became more involved in other ethnic communities and now looks forward to returning to the Japanese American community. Yung comments, “Looking back, I understand how much the JCCCNC’s programs impacted my life and am looking forward to helping out around the Center.” Also joining the JCCCNC this summer is Drew Mametsuka who will be participating in the Nikkei Community Internship (NCI) program, interning in the Development office. He is a second year at San Jose State University, currently majoring in Animation/Illustration but thinking of changing to Pre-Nursing. Interested in community outreach, different forms of art, the outdoors and sports, Drew applied to the NCI program with the intent to give back to the community. “I was raised in the Japanese American community and I think being in this program will help me become more involved,” says Drew. 4 Summer 2012 - Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California JCCCNC Community Takahashi Youth Ambassador Fellowship Program Participants Selected The JCCCNC is proud to announce the participants that have been selected to the 2012-13 Takahashi Youth Ambassador Fellowship Program. The 2012-13 Takahashi Fellows are: • • • • • • • • • • Riki Hisayo Suzuki Eijima, 14, San Francisco; Tai Masako Iwamasa, 15, San Francisco; Claire Kazumi Nakamura, 15, San Francisco; Andrew K. Shoji Nielsen, 17, Clayton; Sydnie Mika Osaki, 15, San Mateo; Aislinn Kiyomi Ozawa-Burns, 15, Sunnyvale; Tae Li Shimamoto, 16, Oakland; Jessica Kinuko Svoboda, 16, Concord; Kai Erika Wong, 14, San Francisco; and Wesley Hitomo Yee, 16, San Francisco. On June 16, the Takahashi Fellows had their first workshop. It was a fun-filled and challenging day that began with a few icebreakers, which then led to the “Tabemasho Challenge,” where, in small groups, the fellows had to shop for and prepare their own lunch of hiya-yakko, zaru soba and kinpira gobo. After lunch, the group learned the basics of planning, creating goals and objectives for their upcoming All You Can Eat Udon Fundraiser. The goal for the Takahashi Fellows is to raise $3,000 at this fundraiser that will take place on Saturday, July 21 from 11:00 a.m. at the JCCCNC. They will plan, promote, sell tickets and cook for what looks to be a deliciously successful fundraiser. Other activities that are planned for the Takahashi Fellows this summer include workshops on Japanese American history, civics and government, and Japanese culture, along with taking the first steps of planning and preparing their own activities. Because this is a two-year program, the Fellows will remain active by participating in JCCCNC’s Annual Event in the fall, pound mochi for the new year and then next spring lend a hand at the JCCCNC’s Colma Cemetery Clean-up. Next summer, they will continue their workshops that will focus more on the preparation needed for their trip as ambassadors to Japan in late July 2013, representing their families, the JCCCNC, our community and the United States. TAKAHASHI YOUTH AMBASSADORS — (front row, L to R) Jessi Svoboda, Kai Wong, Tai Iwamasa, Mika Osaki, (back row, L to R) Andrew Nielsen, Aislinn Ozawa-Burns, Tae Shimamoto, Claire Nakamura, Riki Eijima, Wesley Yee These ten Takahashi Fellows will participate in workshops this summer to learn about the Japanese American community, research and present their own family history, develop and strengthen their leadership skills, fortify their relationships with each other through teambuilding activities and begin learning more about Japan, its culture, history and how they can better prepare for their role as ambassadors on their trip to Japan next summer. Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California - Summer 2012 5 JCCCNC Special Events Volunteers Assist in 3rd Annual Colma Japanese Cemetery Clean-up In preparation for Memorial Day, the JCCCNC organized its 3rd Annual Colma Japanese Cemetery Clean-up Day on May 19, which over 100 volunteers from around the Bay Area ranging in ages from 6 to over 80 years old gave up most of their Saturday beautifying the three acre cemetery. Close to 50 large garbage bags of green waste were discarded as a result of the clean-up. This year, an anonymous donor made a $1,000 contribution to help with the clean-up to purchase supplies, food and beverages for the volunteers. Some volunteers also brought their own special homemade treats to share. Typically, the JCCCNC funds the event as part of a giving-back program and as a tool to educate others about a place that deeply represents the history of the Japanese American community. “It’s a unique cultural treasure that deserves our attention, our respect, our time. For many of us, it’s the place where our loved ones are laid to rest. For all of us, it represents our history,” explains Lori Matoba, JCCCNC Deputy Director, on why cleaning this cemetery is important. “Furthermore, currently the sole caretaker of the cemetery, Mr. Nishi, is over 80 years old and can only do so much,” she adds. Before breaking for lunch, Diane Matsuda, co-organizer of the event, shared a brief history of the cemetery, thanked the volunteers and held a moment of silence to remember the lives lost as part of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The JCCCNC would like to thank all of the volunteers and the following supporting organizations for helping to make this project a success: Bay District Jr.YBA, Genryu Arts, Japanese Benevolent Society of California, Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Northern California, Japanese Community Youth Council (JCYC), Kokoro Assisted Living, National Japanese American Historical Society, Nihonmachi Little Friends, Pack 58, San Francisco Japanese American Citizens League, Sei Ko Kai and Troop 58. 6 Summer 2012 - Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California JCCCNC Special Events Families Enjoy Fun For All Ages at 2012 JCCCNC Track Meet It was a sunny day in Palo Alto at Gunn High School for the JCCCNC’s 6th Annual Track Meet on Sunday, June 24th. From the 5 year old super sprinters to the 20 year old athletes, everyone was excited and couldn’t wait to begin the day! Events included the Toddler 25 Meter race, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 Meter races, Soccer Kick, Softball Throw, Long Jump,Triple Jump, High Jump, 4 x 25, 4 x 100, 4 x400 Meter relays, Shot Put and the 110 Meter High Hurdles. One of the most enjoyable events was the Toddler 25 Meter race, where the little super sprinters ran in and out of their lanes, but still finished strong to the line. All toddlers received medals and the smiles on their faces said it all! An additional highlight of the day was the Community Picnic where everyone brought food to share. There was a variety of different foods from Japanese, Chinese, American and scrumptious desserts. The sharing of food is a great example of the sense of community that is shared throughout the event. After loading up on carbs, and regaining their energy, the kids were eager to go! Of course one of the events that stole the show was the 4 x 25 Meter Toddler relay. Passing batons, weaving in and out of lanes, and getting cramps were all minor hurdles for the little ones, but in the end they all were smiling when all received a medal. In addition, the men’s 100 meter sprint was a tight photo finish, and left the crowd in awe of the raw speed of the young high school talent. In the end, from the little ones to the speedy high schoolers, the event brought smiles to all on the field and in the stands. This event couldn’t have been possible without all of our volunteers and committee. A special thanks to Dean Kumagai, Mr. Kumagai, Mr. Kumagai, Michelle Nieda and Craig Hamakawa. Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California - Summer 2012 7 JCCCNC Special Events JCCCNC Celebrates Completion of the Nikkei Family On Saturday, June 23, the JCCCNC hosted an exhibition to celebrate the completion of the Nikkei Family Legacy Project. After a year of researching, organizing and documenting their family histories, nearly 30 participants received a hardcover copy of their book along with a certificate of completion. Participants shared their uncovered family stories and their own personal growth through this program. Friends and family got to experience the variety of books by walking through the exhibit that showed selected photos and stories. The exhibit showcased the rich and diverse stories that came out of this project. The JCCCNC would like to thank the Civil Liberties Public Education Program, a program of the California State Library, The Henri and Tomoye Takahashi Charitable Foundation and the 100th Anniversary of Japantown Fund for providing the funding to make this whole project possible. Also to the participants, thank you for all your hard work and for sharing your wonderful family stories. The JCCCNC will soon be displaying the stories and photos that were featured at the exhibition, so be sure to stop by and see them! 8 Summer 2012 - Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California JCCCNC Special Events Legacy Project Seniors Gain Knowledge of Technology through Intergenerational Digital Literacy Workshops The JCCCNC looks to continue bridging the digital, generational divide with their second series of Digital Leadership Program workshops this summer. Launched in December of 2011, the Digital Leadership Program, part of the Jtown Connected Project organized by the JCCCNC, was created to educate seniors on basic computer skills and current technology, educate youth to be teachers and leaders and to bridge different generations through digital literacy. The first DLP series helped 30 senior citizen students gain basic knowledge to use a computer and communicate with family and friends through e-mail and social media. Eleven youth instructors from the Japanese Youth Leaders (JYL) program, a program by the Japanese Community Youth Council (JCYC) which fosters leadership and personal development, developed the lesson plans, designed the handouts and executed the workshops. The series of five digital literacy workshops began on July 11th and will continue weekly on Wednesdays for two hours each. The workshops include instruction on PC basics, uploading photos and information organization, introduction to the internet, e-mail basics and internet II. Classes are limited to only 15-20 students to improve student to instructor ratio, and one-on-one tutoring sessions is being added this summer to help address the students’ individual needs. All classes and oneon-one tutoring sessions are full. For more information or to learn about future workshops, please visit www.jcccnc. org or contact Ryan Kimura at (415) 567-5505 or e-mail [email protected]. Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California - Summer 2012 9 JCCCNC Special Events NBC Bay Area and the Late Mrs. Masako Suzuki to be Honored at Annual Event for Support of JCCCNC Be on the lookout for the A We will honor NBC Bay Area to express our appreciation for their passion and commitment to individuals and issues in communities across the bay area. Furthermore, we salute NBC Bay Area’s dedication of “giving back” to communities, large and small, including our San Francisco Japantown and more specifically the JCCCNC for their significant role in the promotion and success of our Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund (NJERF). Whether it has been on-air talent hosting special events, participating in our various community programs or promoting our telethon and NJERF relief efforts, their past and continued support has helped to build awareness of the JCCCNC and our mission. Two roundtrip tickets to Japan plus 5 night hotel accommodations The late Mrs. Masako Martha Suzuki helped her sister, Tomoye, establish The Henri and Tomoye Takahashi Charitable Foundation in 1985. Through her philanthropy, she helped change and improve the lives of thousands of people. She always believed that it is not about how much money you have but rather what you can do to make a difference in people’s lives. In 2010, Mrs. Suzuki was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays from the government of Japan for her contributions toward improving U.S.-Japan relations. A native of San Francisco, she maintained a strong commitment towards helping others appreciate and understand the Japanese and Japanese American culture and history. Mrs. Suzuki was a dedicated supporter of the JCCCNC and its programs to promote Japanese culture and history to all individuals. She had a special interest in making sure younger generations were informed and proud of their Japanese American heritage and frequently sponsored many youth development activities at the JCCCNC. Young JCCCNC Performers to Entertain at This Year’s Annual Event To celebrate this year’s JCCCNC Annual Event theme of “Looking Forward, Giving Back,” we will have special performances from the JCCCNC cultural youth groups. From the cute little Kirakiraboshi students serenading you with Japanese children’s songs, to the powerful force of Genryu Arts’ youth taiko drumming and the cute dancing by the youth hula group, the performance aims to showcase the future of the JCCCNC. These young cultural art students are giving back by entertaining the JCCCNC crowd as well as showing their appreciation for all the support that is given to the center in order for these programs to exist. Helping to bring the community together, the young performers will also help to lead an interactive finale, in which we hope all will participate. But on March 11, we went from being a locally based community non-profit organization in San Francisco to an international relief organization responding to the incredible challenge of trying to provide relief, recovery and rebuilding for the people of the Tohoku region of Japan. We are proud of everyone’s past support to the JCCCNC which enabled us to react and respond immediately, and continue to offer all of our regular programs, classes and events. A regular day at the JCCCNC can include mailing out letters to donors and members, setting up classrooms, workshops and events and hundreds of administrative tasks. The JCCCNC also provides resources in the form of space, funds and services for community organizations, individuals and corporations. Included among those resources is low-cost office space for tenants such as Japanese Community Youth Council, Kimochi, Inc. and Nobiru Kai. None of this would be possible without the financial support of the JCCCNC’s many donors, members and corporate sponsors. Also appreciated is the leadership of the Board of Directors, enthusiastic volunteers and hard-working staff. Their unwavering dedication, commitment and generosity to preserving the culture and community push the JCCCNC towards building a Center of greater service for this community. 2011 Revenue 2011 Expenses Development Rentals 12% Development 53% Membership 18% Mem 9% bers hip 6 % Programs 23% Programs 17% The graph above summarizes revenue during the 2011 calendar year. It is the sole responsibility of the Development Department to produce the most significant revenue for most non-profit organizations. For the JCCCNC, donations account for 53% of our revenue, with individual donors collectively contributing the majority of the total. The Development Department’s principal charge is to ensure the sustainable growth and financial health of the organization by gathering resources and long-term support through grassroots fundraising, major donor cultivation and foundation and corporate sponsorships. The Membership Department’s role is to increase visibility of the JCCCNC within the surrounding community, instill in our members a sense of belonging and to grow and sustain relationships with people and organizations that believe in our charter. Currently, the JCCCNC is highly dependent upon senior and senior couple memberships; our aim is to increase our family and sustaining memberships to mirror our success with these contingencies. Building and Operations 62% The graph above summarizes spending during the 2011 calendar year. Building and operations comprise over one-half of the JCCCNC’s expenditures. On the building side, this includes expenses incurred from running a public facility visited by over 185,000 individuals annually, which primarily consists of maintenance and upkeep of a 17,500 square foot building. This includes utilities, equipment leases, licensing and permit fees and facility insurance. On the operational side, this includes staff salaries and benefits, staff development and training, office administration, public relations, advertising and marketing and consulting services. Programs contributed 17% of the revenue for the JCCCNC, generated from class or events fees and donations. The JCCCNC makes a conscious choice to keep the class fees at a minimum as the JCCCNC believes in providing low cost services whereby no attendee is constrained by cost. Programs expenses encompass all classes, corporate and community meeting room rentals, sporting events, seasonal fairs, community forums and events and cultural programs. By nature, the JCCCNC’s programs are highly resource intensive due to the associated (and often obscure) costs of materials, instructor and insurance fees and other related costs necessary to run successful programs. The JCCCNC provides over 100 workshops and classes on an annual basis. These workshops and classes are central to the mission of the Center which is to provide cultural arts, social, recreational and educational classes. Rentals derive 12% of our annual revenue. Similar to our affordable program philosophy, the JCCCNC believes in providing highly subsidized facility space for community groups and organizations with special reduced rates for non-profit organizations. Development expenses include all costs related to direct fundraising, following the Center’s comprehensive development program aimed at generating individual donor, foundation, philanthropic and various foundation and corporate support. 16 Summer 2012 - Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California Inside the JCCCNC Ways to Give: Help the JCCCNC, Your Way! “Like” us! The artist’s work is there and people react to it. Yumi has been at the JCCCNC for a little over a year and is the current Development Manager. She enjoys working at the JCCCNC because she can truly see the multi-generational ideas, stories and programs that go on every day. Give the gift of time! Over the decades, Taira’s artwork has been exhibited across the U.S. and Italy, and has earned him seven solo exhibitions, 35 group exhibitions, which he received ten awards including a few grand prize honors for his sterling silver and semi-precious stone jewelry designs. The JCCCNC is honored to have received these precious works of art and will provide a home for the Nikkei artist’s paintings that Taira described as his "children" and in recent years hoped to find homes that would look after them. The JCCCNC is proud to invite the public to view the work that Taira saw as his own family. The JCCCNC would also like to thank Mr. Taira’s friends and caregivers, Dorothy Calvani and Dava Weinstein for their thoughtfulness in gifting these paintings to the JCCCNC. “From hearing the Nihongo of young Japanese children in our hallways for BAMBI, or seeing many of our Nisei members playing Hanafuda in the afternoons or seeing adults my age running up the Center steps with basketball shoes and gym bags, there is no one too young or too old to join in. As staff, there is nothing greater than seeing firsthand what this community center is all about – a home for the community.” - Yumi Yukawa, JCCCNC Development Manager Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California - Summer 2012 17 x JCCCNC Member Benefit: Discounted Travel to Hawaii JCCCNC Members are eligible to receive discounted air and hotel to Hawaii where it’s warm and sunny all year round.
