Laurel-Beltsville Senior Activity Center BOOKCLUB
Winter 2013 Book Club
Club meets 2nd and 4th Fridays from 2pm-3:30pm
December – Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton. This story takes place
against the cold, gray bleakness of a New England winter in the fictitious
town of Starkfield, Massachusetts. Ethan Frome is an isolated farmer
trying to scrape out a meager living while also tending to his frigid, demanding and ungrateful wife Zeena. A ray of hope enters Ethan’s life of
despair when his wife’s cousin Mattie arrives to help. His life is transformed as he falls in love with Mattie but their
fate is doomed by the stifling conventions of the time. Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome is a compelling classic of
American literature and a powerful tale with compelling characters trapped in circumstances they seem unable to
escape.
January – The 5th Inning by E. Ethelbert Miller. This book is poet and literary activist E. Ethelbert Miller’s second memoir. This book finds Miller considering baseball, the game of his youth, in order to find the metaphor that
will provide the measurement of his life. At 60, he ponders whether his life can now be entered into the official record books as a success or failure. The 5th Inning is one man’s examination of personal relationships, depression,
love and loss. This is a story of the individual alone on the pitching mound or in the batter’s box. It’s a box score
filled with remembrance. It’s a combination of baseball and the blues.
February – The Affairs of Others by Amy Grace Loyd. This is a novel about a woman who loves her separateness. After Celia’s husband dies prematurely from cancer, she buys an apartment building consisting of four apartments. She becomes the landlord to three other tenants in a downtown Brooklyn building. Celia is highly practiced
at remaining apart from people in her building until the arrival of a new tenant, Hope, a dazzling woman of a certain
age on the run from her husband’s recent betrayal. When Hope begins a torrid and noisy affair, and another tenant
mysteriously disappears, the carefully constructed walls of Celia’s world are tested and the sanctity of her building
is shattered.
