Mini-Goat Notes - Miniature Dairy Goat Association
Mini-Goat Notes Kidding season is behind us, showing season is coming to a close, and breeding season is right around the corner or it may have already started for some. Plans are already forming for next years crop of kids. Your hay is probably snugly stacked in your barn. The bucks are in full rut and your does are lazing around in the sun or shade, whichever catches their fancy at the moment, or they’re sleeping snuggly in the barn while listening to the Fall rains come down in rhythmic beats. I hope you all had a great year so far and that the best is still yet to come! That your goats will be happy and healthy this fall and coming winter, and that you and your families will keep healthy and find new ways to use all of that wonderful milk! -Tiffany Wilcox Hope this has been a great year for you all! In this Mini-Goat Notes issue we want to bring you all the goat news in the Miniature Dairy Goat world, as well as some delicious recipes to use that goat milk in! Registrar Jacqui Wilcox PO Box 1534 Woodland, WA 98674 Phone: 360) 225-1938 Co-Registrar Shelley Weber 10613 S 2058 PR SE Kennewick, WA 99337 Phone: 509) 396-9922 Registrar's E-mail: [email protected] Send Your New/Renew Membership Applications to: Suzy Minck 3664 CR 415 Stephenville, TX 76401 Phone: 254) 485-0292 Email: [email protected] INFORMATION FROM THE MDGA BOARD, FALL 2014 We hope you’ve all had a good summer and have enjoyed your goats while they frolicked in the summer sun. We also hope you’ve had green pastures and lots of growing kids that meet your expectations of your “next generation”. If you didn’t get a chance to participate in the recent shows held at various places around the country, or didn’t enter the Summer or Fall V-Shows, now is a good time to start thinking about getting those spring photos done before the June deadline. Though V-Shows have their limitations since judges are using photos, the shows do give breeders a chance to let others see what they’re producing, and there are always those points that judges can mention that many of us miss on our daily trips to the barn. In case you missed the information from the last newsletter, in the last few months MDGA has moved toward becoming a non-profit organization. Andrea Green, the previous owner of the registry, has retired and there is a Board of Directors leading the registry. We, the members of the board, have been and will be working to make the registry an even better organization. MDGA has recently hired a bookkeeper to manage the financial end of the business. Members will not need to have her location or address since payment for membership, registrations, transfers, or V-Show entries will continue to go to the same addresses as before. Always refer to the website for contact information when submitting payments by mail. There are no changes in the Paypal method of payments. Our newly-upgraded website is miniaturedairygoats.net. Thanks to our webmaster, Tiffany Wilcox, several of the pages have been updated while making the move to a new host. The home page has been changed to include a more complete list of topics and subtopics, making it easier to navigate the website. Many members have reported the ease with which information may be found. Those that have opted to register online are especially happy with the features on the registration page. For those of you involved in milk test in 2013, Andrea Green graciously completed examination of the reports that were submitted, and some milking stars were awarded. If anyone is involved in milk test for the current year, Christina (Tina) Linsin, has agreed to take over the role of milk test coordinator. Her contact information is on the website. Those of you who enjoy participating in milk test will find that Tina is always pleasant and excited to talk about anything related to goats. If anyone submitted 2013 milk test data and did not receive deserved recognition, please contact Tina. MDGA now has a new chairman of the Artificial Insemination (AI) Committee, Brenda McCallister-Mandujano. Due to our Miniature Dairy breeds being mere babes in the scheme of things, not many are taking advantage of semen collection and artificial insemination. However, as the numbers grow, more members will become interested in this method of acquiring new and better genetics without the problems of purchasing and maintaining more bucks. For those members interested in pursuing the use of artificial insemination, but have questions, consider contacting Brenda for suggestions. Penny Tyler and the members of her Evaluation Committee have been working to develop an evaluation system for MDGA. The group has completed a first draft. With a little more tweaking, it is hoped this tool will be ready sometime in the near future. Some recent Board decisions included: Voting for the formation of a V-Show Committee, separate from the “Live” Show Committee. Tiffany Wilcox is now the Chairman of this committee. Voted to hire a Book Keeper In the Experimental Herdbook, in the part referring to the offspring of third generation Experimentals, the Board voted to delete the sentence “The offspring of such animals will also be entered into the Experimental Herdbook for at least one additional generation.” Considering the expenses for mailing, and the problem with members and also nonmembers forgetting to include a postage fee, the Board voted to increase by $1 any fees that require mailing of items (with membership packets being an exception). Voted for the development of an MDGA Facebook page, for the purpose of announcements. Voted to use the prefix “FCH” for finished champions that have three show wins and the prefix “FMCH” for finished champions that have three show wins and a milk award. I have been raising dairy goats for 5 years. The breeds that I raise are Mini-LaManchas , Standard LaManchas and Nigerian Dwarves, I also have one Mini-Oberhasli doeling. I now work full-time running our farm and acting as the Office Manager for our trucking company. It has been very nice to see the introduction of new and exciting genetics in our members’ herds. AI provides an alternative to having to purchase, raise, feed and care for several bucks while still being able to incorporate new, strong and proven genetics into our herds. I look forward to serving as your Artificial Insemination Chairperson. Membership Report Hi to the MDGA Family. This has been an exciting year for many of us as mini’s are an addicting farm animal to have. It seems the love of our mini breeds is catching on all over the USA, and even into Australia now. In mid March I took over the Membership Applications and as I learned the ropes of getting things out and getting all the correct info on which lists and sent to Jacqui, Shelley and Tiffany, things began to settle into a routine for me. As Tiffany and Jacqui held my hand through many mistakes, things have settled down and are on an even keel now. Andrea Green took a trip down here to Texas before she retired with all the files of every member that has been with MDGA over the years. So, now I have all the info on each of you. If you need help with something, let me know. As of 10/4/2014 we have 471 members for this year with many being new members & first time goat owners as well. At the end of 2013 we had 372 members . I’m seeing many members coming from the East Coast and VA is a hot spot at the moment. There are several members that have also paid for their renewals for 2015 already. This was a great year for memberships and I see this amount continuing to grow. If you have questions, ask me and I’ll know the answer or get it for you. [email protected] or call me at 254) 485-0292 Those who join/renew as members between Oct. 1st and Dec. 31st, will not have to renew till Dec 31, 2015. ON THE JOB FOR MDGA MILK TEST COORDINATOR—TINA LINSIN Tina Linsin has agreed to take on the role of MDGA’s Milk Test Coordinator. She lives with her husband and children, near Covington, VA, and teaches English at the local high school. Having owned goats since 2007, her herd now includes Nigerian Dwarves, LaManchas, and Mini-LaManchas. Contact her at [email protected] CHAIRMAN OF THE ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION COMMITTEE & ADMINISTRATOR FOR MDGA’S FACEBOOK PAGE —BRENDA MCCALLISTER-MANDUJANO Having a new interest in using artificial insemination to improve her own herd, Brenda has agreed to be the Chairman of MDGA’s AI Committee. She has been doing lots of research on artificial insemination and recently completed a workshop on the subject, and has successfully inseminated her first goat. Contact her about AI at [email protected] With Facebook having become a major method of sharing information, and with many MDGA members being “facebookies”, Brenda suggested to the Board that an MDGA Facebook page be set up. When the Board agreed, Brenda got the job done and assumed the role of one of the administrators. CHAIRMAN OF THE V-SHOW COMMITTEE—TIFFANY WILCOX Tiffany has been the webmaster for MDGA for two years, and in that role has been handling the set-up of the V-Shows. More recently she has taken an active role in selecting and communicating with judges, so when the Board voted to create the VShow Committee, it was only natural to ask Tiffany to chair this important committee. Co-REGISTRAR—SHELLEY WEBER When the numbers of goat registrations and transfers grew to be too much for one person, our long-time registrar, Jacqui Wilcox, asked for help. Shelley, who lives in Kennewick, WA, and raises Mini-Nubians and Nigerian Dwarves, stepped up to the plate. She now works closely with Jacqui and is in charge of registering Mini-Alpines, Mini-Guernseys, Mini-LaManchas, Mini-Oberhaslis, and Nigerian Dwarves. Shelley is also the MDGA Show Chairman. She can be contacted at [email protected] & [email protected] , or (509) 3969922 MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION MANAGER—SUSAN MINCK As the number of MDGA members has grown by leaps and bounds, we needed someone to manage the important task of keeping up with the membership applications, and Suzy volunteered. She lives in Stephenville, TX, where she raises Mini-Alpines. Anyone who has questions about becoming a member, or the status of a renewal, should touch base with Suzy. Her contact information is: [email protected] - (254) 485-0292 DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVES The MDGA Board visualizes having a representative from each of our 4 districts who will bring concerns and ideas from the members of their districts to the Board. The members of the present Board would like to see this happen early in 2015. We hope to develop a form and/or questionnaire to be filled out by perspective representatives. The information provided will then be shared with MDGA members before the votes are cast by members of each candidate’s district. ANDREA GREEN RETIRES FROM MDGA After managing MDGA affairs for six years, Andrea Green has retired. This spring, she turned management duties over to a Board of Directors. As the Directors settled into handling MDGA business, Andrea asked to retire from the Board. Below is a letter from Andrea, addressed to MDGA members and her many goat friends. For the past six plus years it has been my pleasure to be the caretaker for the MDGA records. I will always take pride in what has been accomplished in those six years. With our membership growing and more interests in the program MDGA offered, after a couple years of managing alone, it was obvious that other people were needed to help with the registry. Volunteers and appointed members took over the different programs. By the fall of 2012, the chairmen of the different programs were appointed to be the first Board of Directors. The next two years the Board worked on updating the rules and regulations for each of the programs. These changes were needed in order to bring MDGA more in line with the larger registries. In the spring of 2014 MDGA was incorporated as a non-profit organization with the standing Board serving as Directors. In May of this year, I asked to resign from the Board and to retire so I could begin to enjoy the good life by spending more time with my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I will always be available to help MDGA if the need arises, but I will be leaving the care and running of MDGA in the qualified hands of others. I appreciated the opportunity to work with MDGA’s members. Many of these I now know personally--a friendship is always a treasure to be held closely. Drop me a line once in a while if you care to. I’d like to know how you are doing. God Bless, Andrea Green FEE INCREASE With the ever-increasing cost of mailing, MDGA fees for registrations, transfers, etc. need to be increased. It now costs $1.19 to mail the lightest envelope with a registration certificate. Several months ago, a charge of $1 was added to the fee schedule to help cover postage fees. However, many members and non-members alike, have forgotten to include this amount. In order to keep our bank statements in “black ink”, the Board has voted to raise by $1, all fees except the membership fee, thus removing the $1 postage. Effective on January 1, 2015, this is the list of fees: Members Non Non--Members Goat Jokes Want to Share? Have a favorite goat milk/ cheese recipe, a goat picture or drawing you’d like to share? He exclaimed, "You should take it to the zoo." The following week, the same policeman sees the same man with the goat again in the front seat, with both of them wearing sunglasses. The policeman pulls him over. "I thought you were going to take that goat to the zoo!" The man replied, "I did. We had such a good time we are going to the beach this weekend!" What do you call the best 'butter' on the farm? A goat! Recipe Corner BLACK & WHITE CHEESECAKE From "Caprine Cooking" 1/2 cup marshmallow crème or 1 cup mini marshmallows 1 Graham Cracker crust 1 envelope Knox, unflavored gelatin 3/4 cup goat milk, heated to boiling 1/4 cup cold goat milk 2 cups (1lb.) soft goat cheese 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1 tsp. vanilla extract Spread marshmallow crème or sprinkle marshmallows over the bottom of the Graham Cracker crust. In a blender, sprinkle Knox gelatin over cold goat milk. Let stand 2 minutes to soften gelatin, add hot milk and process 2 minutes to dissolve the gelatin. Add soft goat cheese, sugar, cocoa powder and vanilla. Process until blended. Gently pour into prepared crust. Chill until firm, about 2 hours. Jennifer's 10 minute goat milk fudge 1 lb. Powdered Sugar 1/2 Cup Cocoa 1/2 Cup Butter 1/4 Cup Goats Milk 1 tsp Vanilla 1/2 Cup Broken pecans or walnuts Combine Sugar and cocoa thoroughly in a large microwavable bowl by sifting it together. Make a well in the center of the mixture. Place cut up butter and milk in the well. DO NOT STIR!!!! Microwave on high for 2 minutes. Remove and add vanilla, stirring to blend. Stir in nuts and put into buttered dish or pan. THIS IS IT!!!!! Your microwave may vary so you might go a few seconds over the 2 minutes if you have a lower heat microwave. I've made this with peanut butter (sub part of the butter for peanut butter), mint, and many other variations. It comes out perfect every time and never scorches! Well, here is a simple math lesson on figuring out your goat’s percentages. Lets say you’re breeding a 75/25 Mini buck to a 62.50/37.50 Mini doe. You take the standard part of the percentage from both parents. So in this case you take 75 and add 62.50, then you divide that answer by 2, Which gives you 68.75. Now for the interesting part, you take the 68.75 and subtract 100 from it, that gives you -31.25. So the percentages for those kids will be 68.75/31.25. Here let me break it down without all the words in the way. Sire - 75/25 + Dam - 62.50/37.50 75 + 62.50 = 137.50 - 137.50 ÷ 2 = 68.75 - 68.75 - 100 = -31.25 Final result, 68.75/31.25 for those kids. There, now you can figure out your goat’s percentages! Thin Coat Fix - Author unknown "I brushed them once or twice daily with a wheat germ essential oil base, tea tree oil, and cider vinegar mix. The focus of our endeavor has always been two fold, striving to breed goats that we are proud to sell while putting their milk to good use. We can and do sell raw milk from our farm and while we cannot sell our cheeses (chevre, ricotta, mozzarella, cheddar, jack, feta) we find plenty of uses for them in our kitchen as well as gifts for family and friends. The list goes on with puddings, ice creams, sauces and so on. It's all about the milk! In addition to our goats, Chris maintains a small apiary and does stained glass. We also have a garden every year, sometimes more than others. As we like to put it "retirement is what happens when you run out of time to work for a living"! “TAKE TIME TO ENJOY YOUR GOATS” 2) Cheese is what started us in mini's. In the past we had raised standard goats and Angoras, selling out when we moved into Oklahoma City for business reasons. In 2004, having moved to the country again, we (I) bought our first Nigerians. When I attended a Cheese Making Workshop in 2006 and got all excited about cheeses, Chris pointed out that I was lacking a key ingredient...milk. I knew I didn't want to raise standards again because of my size and felt that heavy producing Nigerians were out of my price range. It was, in fact, the President of the local NDGA group who suggested I look toward minis. Twenty-four hours later our first (now retired and luxuriating on site) Mini-Nubian was purchased and on the milking stand. From there we purchased a few starter does of both breeds, good quality bucks and have never looked back. Drawing by Megan Wilcox 3) I am very pleased with my Mini-Alpines for consistency of conformation, over all size, udder attachment, milk production and temperament. By searching for and purchasing genetically diverse bucks (thanks in part to Suzy Minck, Milkmaid Ranch) we have progressed to having some very nice 4th generation bucks and does here at Loma Verde and elsewhere. They are very few and far between. 4) I would like to see a bit more "body" in my Mini-Nubians. Daystar's Ben-Hur has done a lot for us in 2013 and 2014 to improve breed character and now we are confident that WRRanch BeBe's Haywood will continue that and add a bit more structure. 5) Keep it simple when just starting. One breed is a lot easier to deal with and allows you to focus on your goals for your herd. We have two, but it is because my husband prefers the MiniAlpines upright ears and I wanted more butterfat for cheese purposes. Bottom line for us, we just like goats. I would also suggest that you locate a veterinary practice that is knowledgeable about and willing to treat your goats, BEFORE you need them. We are fortunate to be located near Langston University and to have a very good goat vet within driving distance. Be willing and prepared to travel for veterinary assistance as well as additions to your herd. 6) Decide where you want to go with your goats & keep good records, but most importantly be aware that they do not read the books or go by the rules! So stay on your toes. Learn to do what works for you, not what everybody else tells you MUST be done. Most important of all.....TAKE TIME TO ENJOY YOUR GOATS! They will return 10 fold what you give them..
