Design with Paper Project Vocabulary/Terms Notan: The art of Design with Positive and Negative Shapes Positive: the object or shape Negative: the surrounding space Symmetry: divided down the center Types of shapes: Geometric: based on circles, squares, rectangles, triangels Biomorphic: based on nature Techniques: Watch this video to see proper order and suggestions for this project https://www.pinterest.com/pin/241505598740132014/ Shape project example: Geometric with triple cuts Shape project example: Biomorphic Symmetry project example: I can create Notan designs 1. Shape Project a. Choose to work with mostly geometric or biomorphic shapes b. Draw a pre-‐sketch design on the 4 edges (not corners) c. Choose a type of shape and vary it to create rhythm and unity in the design d. Transfer the design to the construction paper e. Cut neatly and glue precisely 2. Symmetry Project a. Draw a pre-‐sketch of a symmetrical object or subject b. Plan to cut from one side only c. Cut neatly and glue precisely d. Create at least 2 double or triple cuts I can choose a design that is complex enough to be interesting and challenging but not so complex that it is impossible to complete. Students may look up Notan and Positive and Negative designs for inspiration. Students may use internet images a resources for their symmetry design.
