.....Don’t know if this will make you feel any better about our HOA dues, but our neighbors at Suncrest are now paying upwards of $800 monthly. And they don’t own their
land! Their dues are based on the CPI (that’s Consumer Price Index.....yeah, I had to look
it up too), not a budget committee.
Is owned by and is the official publication of the Palm Desert Greens
Homeowners Association.

.....And more info for those interested in our budget; we have no control over expenses
like electricity, water and gas, for starters, and you heard Budget Committee Chair Ken
Dobson note at the last public meeting, that we have an anticipated 34% increase in workers comp insurance.
.....There have been several “warning” citations issued for golf carts parked in front of the
patio after golf has concluded for the day. I refer you to page 19 in our Rules and RegulaDennis Hanks
tions manual which states “All carts not being used to play a round of golf must be parked
only in designated cart spaces and all posted parking restrictions must be followed.” Yes, I realize this has not been enforced
consistently but things are changing..for the better, we hope!
.....Please, please, please, make use of our association web site. It’s quite simple, really. Just go to www.pdgcc.com to get
started. You’ll need to know your unit and lot number (unit #’s are the small ones, up to 6, and the lot # is the big one). You’ll
be asked if you are a resident or renter, your address and a valid email address. That’s it. Then you can start taking advantage
of all the great, informative stuff that’s there for your benefit!
.....The desert-scape phase of our irrigation project is slated to begin on July 1.
.....Palm tree trimming (say that fast, three times) is set to take place the last week of June.
.....By now all the parking lot pavement improvements should be nearing completion, with new markings as well.
.....And another reminder that our guests are to abide by all the rules and regs of the Association, which includes dress code in
the Clubhouse and Lounge.
That’s it from here this month. Don’t forget to fix those ball marks and divots, PLEASE!! And, most of all, have a great day!

I Beams vs. Spider Legs
Due to a physical condition or space
requirement(s), many residents have
requested permission to replace carport/patio posts with spider legs.
By using an I Beam, you can gain
more room and may not need to
place spider legs in the easement
area, which requires Board approval, and may benefit from a potential
savings.

From the General Manager
Thank you, one and all, for your
contributions to the Association’s
Annual Employee Playday. Our staff
members will enjoy a 9-hole golf
toumament (thanks to the members
who provide golf carts), after which
they will have lunch and vie for the
various prizes you have provided.
One lucky attendee will receive a
flat-screen television. You can only
imagine how much they look forward to this annual event that began
many years ago at the hands of Dr.
Beadle (the then Board President)
and his Board Members. By continRoberta Reynolds
uation of this event, the employees
are reminded of how important they are to the success of this community.
Again, thanks!
May’s projects included (1) Street slurry sealing Phases 5 and 6 and the
Clubhouse Parking Lot, crack-filling and asphaltic repairs on Haystack
Mountain, and restriping; and (2) Fencing at the south end of the Southwest
Pool (bringing it up to current code). Mailing of the 2013-2014 Budget
Booklets, coupon books, ACH notices, and the full Collection Policy (fulfilling the Association’s obligations described in the Davis-Stirling Act).

reduction plan, Palm Greens Parkway was next in line for consideration.
After three years’ discussion, the Parkway’s desert conversion project was
sent out to bid and will be done in July.
I will not suggest that this has not caused discussion about where people
will walk their dogs. The Board was not callous to those dog owners who
loved using this grassy area for their pets. However, it was compelled to
consider its fiscal responsibility, which meant it opted for the 40-45% savings on water costs there, a benefit for all homeowners, not just the few.
Wind damaged canopies at the Shuffleboard Building and Tennis Courts 1,
2, 5, and 6. We are waiting for prices for replacement.
The P A system at the Golf Shop was run through a service provider that
cost the Association an annual fee. At the suggestion of the Budget Committee, Staff investigated installing an “in house” system, and found it will
pay for itself in 2 years.
Praise must be given to the City of Palm Desert Code Compliance, for
their recent assistance in trimming overgrown shrubs and weeds on a “distressed” vacant property. This is a matter where the property is “upside
down.” The mortgage holder is delaying its foreclosure, avoiding paying
monthly assessments. Since the Association was getting no help from anyone to cure the ARC violations, we were at a stand-still. I contacted the City
and they responded. Again we express our appreciation for their help.
For the past two years, the Association fulfilled its obligation to update the

past five years.
That reminds me, be sure you register your away address and fill out the
“property check” in the Administration Office if you plan to leave for an
extended time during the summer. It is also a good idea to make sure we
have on record your caretaker or someone who will know how to contact
you should we discover you have a broken sprinkler or some other problem.
At the time the new irrigation system was being considered, the Association
investigated costs for converting certain areas from turf to desert scape, following their goal for reduction of water consumption and pumping costs.
While it proved too costly to handle both projects at once, the irrigation
system was designed so that future sites could easily be converted to desertscape. The Budget Committee recommended setting aside $100,000 annually for such conversion.
We cannot sit back on our laurels. There is still much to be done to enhance,
protect and preserve the Association’s assets. I am pleased the Board has
extended my contract for five years. It will be exciting as well as challenging to work with the Boards, Committees, Staff, and all our volunteers
as we continue to maintain our vibrant, active community, Palm Desert
Greens.
Please remember our Troops as they are away from home. Honor those
who have served, give thanks for those who have made the supreme sacrifice for our freedom. SALUTE!
Have a wonderful summer.
Warmest regards to you and those you love,

June Gloom! Remember those days on the coast when the fog did not burn off till
noon? And isn’t it great to look at the weather channel and see a whole row of big
bright suns while the weather remains cool!
When the weather changes here in the desert we have wind. This year the weather
seems to change every few days. Except for the accompanying wind, the changes
are nice because we have enjoyed a lovely spring with many cool days and lovely
flowers.
How great it is to live in a place where you can plan an outing or barbecue without fear of being rained out or shrouded in fog!
Forwarding an email that contains numerous email addresses by simply clicking
“forward” sends all those addresses and yours to everyone you sent it to. Every
time it is forwarded more addresses are added.
There are several ways this can be avoided, for example:
1-After clicking forward you are given a chance to enter your comments. At this
point select/highlight all of those old addresses and hit ”delete” enter your comments and send.
2-To forward the content, select/highlight the information in the email and copy
the selected information. Create a new email and paste the information selected
into the body of the email. In the “to” box enter your own address then click BCC
(blind carbon copy) and enter addresses of recipients. Only your address will be
seen.
Note: When sending emails to groups with many members, if you send to yourself with BCC to the group each will see only your address.
Computer Club meetings are suspended till November when the new season
opens.
The last meeting of the 2012-2013 season was on May 9th.
The beginning of the 2013-2014 season will begin on November 14th at 9AM in
the Clubhouse, unless otherwise posted on Channel 98.
The Learning Center will continue to be open between 10 and 12 noon Monday,
Wednesday and Saturday through the month of May. Wednesday open time will
continue through June.
Membership in the Computer Club is $15.00.
Everyone is welcome. We are all here to share and learn. We look forward to
seeing all of you in the fall.

New Dimensions
New Dimensions elected new officers at the April General meeting.
They were installed by Zita Wilkenson in the traditional ceremony at
the May meeting. I actually am submitting this article before the May
meeting, so I will report on it again in the next issue. I am confident that
Angie Whitney gave a memorable performance as she sang and played
the keyboard, because Lela Buffington has provided us with very talented performers this past year.
Erma Hanks is our new President; Sheila Weldon, Vice President; Patricia Lant, Secretary; and Beverly McGill, Treasurer. Erma announced,
“I am looking forward to a good year with our new board, and the continuing committee members:
Membership - Carol Dobson; Travel - Sugar Grassi and Patricia Lant;
Friendship - Madeline Levine; Publicity - Carol McKinniss; Hostesses
- Lori Gross and Muriel Pierson; 50/50 - Don and Gayle Risk; Pull-tabs
- Jeane Rawson; Entertainment booking - Lela Buffington; Telephone
tree - Carol Venable.” “I am looking for a couple for Hospitality, and
a chair for Decorations. If anyone is interested in working with a great
group of people, having a good time, and serving PDG’s wonderful social club, please contact me, Erma Hanks.”
This is a committed team of volunteers with can-do spirits and willdo attitudes. They enjoy working together to serve the members. The
monthly General Meetings are free with delicious refreshments and
professional entertainers. The next general meeting will be the Welcome Back Ice Cream Social in October.
The Special Events really are special and the next one will be July 4th.
Check Channel 98 and the kiosks for details. New Dimensions enhances our lifestyles and adds prestige to our PDGCC community. Join us
for a large social network, because the more people you meet, the more
fun you have.

At the April general meeting, we had our own version of Dancing with the
Stars by welcoming Don and Jackie Hagan, dance instructors from Red Hot
Ballroom. This is a non-profit organization that teaches Ballroom dance to
children in grades 4 through 7. The mission is to teach children self esteem,
manners and respect for others through dance. It was founded in 2007 by
Bob and Nancy Horn. The group is all volunteers. How it works is simple.
Red Hot Ballroom provides the participating school district with a master
dance teacher who teaches the volunteer “Amigos”, ballroom and Latin
dances. They then instruct school teachers the dances and then they in turn
teach the children. Red Hot Ballroom anticipates reaching 1500 children
in the Coachella Valley this year. The organization also sponsors a dance
competition where students can show their skills. Donations made to Red
Hot Ballroom are used to purchase tuxedo shirts, ties and dance shoes for the
boys and dresses and dance shoes for the girls. Its success can be measured
by the growth and the enthusiasm that the program has had in the participating school districts. A donation was made to the organization by Women’s
Club that was greatly appreciated.
As of this writing, LaDonna Keaton, Women’s Club President is doing much
better and may be in her own home by now.
This year, Marilyn Bergeson took on the job as secretary of PDG Women’s
Club. Marilyn hails from Washington State. She worked as a bookkeeper
and did medical billing for an insurance company while raising four children. She is a trained aesthetician, and while working for a real estate company, met her husband Ed. Ed has six children so Marilyn has been very
busy with their blended family for the last 28 years. Marilyn had a couple of
close friends that lived in the Coachella Valley, and after coming to vacation
here for 16 years, the Bergeson’s chose Palm Desert Greens as the perfect
place for retirement.
Marilyn said that she was very lonely when she first came here and she really didn’t know how to meet people. She had lived her whole life in one place
and never had to venture out to make new friends. Along came Kaye Trujillo
who was from her hometown and lived in PDG. Kaye said if you want to
meet other ladies, come to a PDG Women’s Luncheon. Marilyn attended a
luncheon meeting, joined, and has been a member for seven years.
Marilyn also was part of the chorus line of the PDG Entertainers show this
year. She told me she has been dancing since she was very young. Marilyn
even taught dance when she was 13 years old in her “dance studio” her father built for her in the basement of their home. She had about 60 students
and said the only problem was that because basements have low ceilings,
some of her taller students would brush their feet on the ceiling when doing
cartwheels. Marilyn and Ed go back to Washington for the summer months
where they own a 5th wheel that sits on the property of one of their kids.
From her own experience, Marilyn has learned that you need to socialize
with others and Women’s Club provides that opportunity. She sees PDG
Women’s Club being about friendship and well as philanthropy. She says
she has learned so much from the other members of the Board and is really
looking forward to the rest of the coming year.
Marilyn we appreciate the fine work you are doing for Women’s Club.
My last article until fall will report of the Patriotic Luncheon in May.

Women’s Golf Club
PDG Website
This is my first column for the Women’s Golf Club after taking over from Annie
Roberts ... Annie left big shoes to fill, but working on the monthly newsletter will
give me an opportunity to learn more about our wonderful club.
The website is full of information for our residents so that they can stay connected
when on vacation, gone for the summer, or just want to keep an eye on upcoming
events within the Club.
DWGA held it’s Spring Tournament at Indian Canyons Golf Club in Palm Springs
Monday, April 22. Members from Palm Desert Greens won in every flight. Anne
Shuttleworth and Bonnie Schmidt each won closest to the pin in their flights.
Over the Field Low Gross was won by our members Stephanie McBee and Lola
Sutter, and Low Net Over the Field was won by Joy Mueller and Mary Ann Riley. The “frosting on the cake” was a HOLE-IN-ONE by our own Bonnie Allen.
Congratulations to all!
The site is readily available to all our residents and homeowners providing everyone
with up to date information concerning Palm Desert Greens. To navigate to the site,
just type in www.pdgcc.com in the address bar on your web browser, and off you
will go.
The Women’s Golf Club had it’s last big event on May 7. A Mini-Guest, MemberMember event took place with the theme of a 50’s Sock Hop. Jan Voirol, Linda
Miller and Judy Davis, Jan’s co-chairs on the tournament committee, and Jan’s
many helpers, did an outstanding job of transporting us back to High School with
members and guests dressed in rolled-up jeans, “Dad’s white shirt”, and bobby
sox. The outstanding lunch was served to the tune of 50’s music and we were
entertained by an enthusiastic display of the Jitterbug put on by Bob and Nancy
Horn. Bob and Nancy are residents of Palm Desert Greens and own a business,
Red Hot Ballroom. The Horns volunteer at our local schools teaching dancing to
some very lucky children.
The new slate of officers for the PDG Women’s Golf Club has been elected for
the coming season of 2013-2014. We are very fortunate to have some returning
officers and happy to welcome some new officers:

Flag Fund Report
Condolences are extended to the family and friends of
The following former Palm Desert Greens residents:
Florence Roe McCloskey
Jean Abad
Lee Davis
Donations were received from the following:
Merle Wright in memory of Florence Roe McCloskey
Maria Valosay, Georgiana Oliveri, Don and Pat Shegich,
John and Katie May, Members of the PDG Bingo Committee In memory of
Lee Davis
Jim and Eleanor Bain in memory of
Cliff Vough
Jim Granbery, Don and Marlene Flattum in memory of
Rick Folger
Jim Granbery in memory of
Verill Granbery
Thank you once again for your continued support of our
Flag Fund. Last month I mentioned that the fund was going to make a donation to Palm Desert Greens and after
investigation, it was determined that the idea was great,
however a little too ambitious. Another suggestion was
made by a member of the Clubhouse Committee and that
is being checked out as of this writing.
In the meantime, the fund is donating $100.00 to the Employee Appreciation Day for a fun day of golf, prizes, and
lots of appreciation for all of the wonderful things they do
for this great community on a daily basis.
If you would like to make a contribution to the fund in memory of a friend or loved one, you can mail or drop it off to
me at 38010 Devils Canyon Dr. If you have any questions
or suggestions, please call me at 760-341-9848. Until
next month stay well.
Sincerely,
Judy Robinson

Pickleball Club
It’s the first part of May now and the weather has been very interesting.
A few days of wind that I’m sure we will be trying to clean the fine dust
forever and a day. When the wind finally let up, the heat came on with a
vengeance. 106 for a couple of days. With the heat came many fires in
California. Now it has cooled down to a “normal” May. The cool down
has allowed all fires to be contained at this time. Now with the snow birds
mostly gone we will be taking out 4 of the 8 nets for the summer to save
them from the heat. Also, May 1st we started Pickleball at 7:00AM till ???
All you snowbirds and Canadian’s are sure missed...EH??? Hope all had a
safe trip home and are enjoying your other homes.
At this time I’d like to mention 3 octogenarians (sorry if I missed anyone
else over 80) who are playing in the Pickleball Club, Ron Schmeck, Dixie
Lee Lohoff, and Terry Urrutia. Ron plays for hours on most days and is
usually one of the first to arrive and last player to leave the courts. He and
Terry have played in a few tournaments around the valley and elsewhere
with great success in their age group. Terry was very instrumental in organizing our Pickleball Club. Thanks Terry. Dixie Lee seems to find time
now and again, between teaching Tai Chi at the Senior Center and all the
other activities she is into, to come play some outstanding Pickleball. She
wear’s me out talking about all she is involved with. And she can still do
the splits. Whew! I hope to be just like her when I grow up. Keep on
keepin’ it on, you 3 inspiring friends.

Nominating Committee
SPRING HAS SPRUNG. The grass is green and the Nominating Committee is
alive and well. We have begun the process of looking for candidates to fill (3)
vacancies on the Board. It may be time for you to think about doing something
for your community. How about running for the Board of Directors? If you would
like more information or if you would like to run, we need to hear from you.
Please call Sara Fenimore at (760) 346-8005 or Louisa Salter at (760) 346-3059.
Applications will be available in July in the Association Office.
Being a Board member gives you an opportunity to make a difference in our
community by contributing your skills and expertise in making this an even better
place in which to live.
If you can attend (8) regular Board meetings a year and want to volunteer
your time, this is the job for you.

Last month we announced the newly Elected Officers for the 2013-2014
Season and advised we’d announce the Appointed Chairs this month; and
here they are: Brian Duckworth, Membership; Clint Jay, Handicap; Ken
Dobson, Tournament; John Coyle, Rules; Dick Peery, AM Sweeps; Dick
Macdonald, PM Sweeps; Howard Hudson, Social; Ken Gordon, Hole
In One; Tony Tilt, SCGA Delegate; Bob Mullen, Hearts and Flowers;
Roger Gould, Publicity; Dale Erickson, Parliamentarian; Ken Gordon,
Past President. The Club Members have expressed their appreciation for
the retirees and their welcoming support for the new Board.
While all the Board Members did their jobs well and efficiently, keeping
us on track with good-humored leadership, there are two that merit extra
gratitude. Tournament Chair Ken Miracle and his super gang of helpers,
and Alex Smutko, with an equally super bunch of helpers, made every
tournament this year one to remember. The last one is no exception.
On May 4th, the MGC held its annual Mini Member-Guest Tournament.
This year we invited the Members of the Womens Golf Club to join. From
all reports, both first-hand and repeated by others, it was another grand
success. An enjoyable format with lots of prizes, lots of surprises, lots of
great food and drink, just lots and lots of a really good time. Here are the
winners of the three Flights. Flight One: gross - Stan Johnson and Tyler
Schafer with a 58, and net - Don Dayton and Gary Seybert with a 50.
Flight Two: gross - George Gamble and Doug Hodson with a 57, and net

The snowbirds have left and COPS is in need of eight more volunteers to

Neighborhood Watch
Our PDGCC Neighborhood Watch meets bi-monthly on the 4th Monday at
2:30 PM in the Palm Room. However, May 27 was Memorial Day, so the
meeting was held on May 20 at 2:30 PM. Membership is free with no dues
and all residents are welcome. We need more Block Captains and it is easy
to do, so please consider if you could serve.
Sheriff Deputy, Stacy Austin, brings informative brochures to the meetings.
She reminds us to call her at 760-836-1600 to schedule free home security
inspections. There are many telephone scams. If you get a call about a family
member or that you have won a prize, it is very important to remember to never call an area code 809. It is in the Virgin Islands and you could be charged
$2,425 a minute, even if you immediately hang up.
Mail thieves can erase ink on a check and change the payee and amount. Use
gel pens labeled “Prevents Check Washing” to write your checks and mail
them in the mail box in the Clubhouse Parking lot.
PDG Security Chief, Bob Russell has told us that his biggest problems are
with people who are here illegally. He said that a Doctor must certify the need
for a caretaker. The Chief reminded us to be watchful and report anything
suspicious. Our PDGCC Security team can not be everywhere to observe suspicious activity, like neighbors can. Emergency Response Team Chairman,
Bobby Grassi, presents emergency preparedness information at our meetings.

New Dimensions Travel
Happy Fathers Day! Spend time with family; more precious than a gift.
Travel tip # 1: Set aside $1 bills for tips or purchases such as coffee. Put a few in
your pocket rather than wallet. Easier to get to and you can replenish from your
wallet the next time you use the loo.
Travel tip # 2: Pack socks & undies in your shoes to save precious luggage space.
Then put shoes in plastic bags so the soles don’t dirty anything.
Travel tip # 3: Take snacks in baggies. Peanuts, raisins, granola bars, mini Snickers bars, hard candies. You never know when you’ll be delayed or have a diabetic
friend that may need a sweet.
Travel tip # 4: When packing jewelry, less is more. Don’t be a target because
your jewelry is flashy.

General Manager Sara Fenimore. Director Audrey Green was absent.
Unit 2 Lot 41 – Margie Tillman – questioned why the assessments will be
raised $6 in the new Budget.
PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS:
Unit 2 Lot 709 – Lois Kalish – stated she was against the Palm Greens Parkway desert conversion and requested the Board to reconsider their decision.
We have several regulations that are in place to make life easier and consistent here in Palm Desert Greens. For example, we have a dress code for
the Lounge at certain times of the day; and we have regulations on golf cart
etiquette on the golf course and around the Clubhouse, just to name a few.
Several residents have received warning citations for parking their golf carts
between the patio and the first tee box. Take heed and resist the need to park
there. Security is going to continue to enforce this regulation.
Issues not considered regulations, but equally important are those common
sense items that seem to slip by us at times. I’m talking about golf carts going
faster than necessary in the cart parking lot and around the Clubhouse, ignoring those nasty white ropes that our grounds crew put up from time to time to
sort of direct cart traffic away from certain areas, etc. I have observed people
actually pulling the stakes out of the ground so their cart can go through instead of going to the unobstructed route.
Unit 1 Lot 35 Fred McClory – stated his embarrassment that the Association’s flags were not lowered to half-mast after the Boston Marathon bombing.

Secretary Dixon noted receipt of the following correspondence:
•
A letter was received regarding the noise level in the Recreation
Center and possible solutions. The Board discussed the matter at their meeting of April 16, 2013, and will look into this further.
•
A note was received from a resident thanking the Food and Bever-
age staff for the work they did on a recent Celebration of Life in the Clubhouse. The resident said F&B Manager Tim Fry and Chef Mark were to be congratulated for their ideas and good work.
•
Cactus Cats took time to send a note to the office staff, thanking them for the continued good work that they do for the Club.
•
A letter was received from a homeowner regarding the smoking ban. The Board responded to this homeowner.
•
A letter was received from a homeowner regarding the Transfer Fee schedule.
•
We received a letter from a homeowner regarding the solar project. The Board will be looking into the homeowner’s questions.
•
We received a second letter from a homeowner on the Parkway,
regarding traffic and the possibility of opening up the Portola gate for construction workers, gardeners, etc. The Board has answered her letter(s), advising that traffic along Portola would not allow us to set up an active permanent entrance into the community.
•
A homeowner sent a note acknowledging the Jazz Night on March 9th, stating it was a terrific event and that they were looking forward to the next one.
•
One of the CanAm participants sent a nice thank you to F&B
Manager Tim Fry and Chef Mark for making it a great event. She noted that staff and service was excellent, as well as the food that was served.

There have been a number of complaints lodged regarding golfers on the
course after the shotguns are finished. These golfers seem to feel that it is
okay to neglect to sign in before going on the course, and may find it necessary to play several people out of one bag. We have you sign in prior to going
on the course for a couple of reasons. The main one being that should an
emergency arise, we will know where you are. Also, we use the honor system
for late afternoon golfers, trusting that residents will accompany any guests
and that they will check in the Golf Shop the following day to pay the guest
golfer fee. The fact that there is no one in the Golf Shop to monitor the late
afternoon usage, does not give anyone the license to invite friends in for free
golf. The golf course is one of our most important assets. We need to take
care of it!

Amazingly enough, there was only one (1) golf course tree lost during the recent wind storms. Several branches blew down, but the damage was minimal.
Some of the pine and olive trees are still in line for replacements, so the Association is grateful for the recent donation of $1,470 to the Tree Replacement
