How Bigotry Shaped a
Great American City
Antero Pietila
B
altimore is the setting for one of the most penetrating
examinations of bigotry and residential segregation to be
published in the United States. Antero Pietila tells the story of
how discrimination toward African Americans and Jews
shaped the cities in which we live. Eugenics, racial thinking,
and white supremacist attitudes influenced even the federal
government’s actions toward housing, dooming American
cities to ghettoization. The Federal Housing Administration
continued discriminatory housing policies even into the
1960s. This all-American tale is told through the prism of Baltimore, from its early suburbanization in the 1880s to the
consequences of white flight after World War II, and into the
first decade of the twenty-first century. The events are real,
and so are the heroes and villains. Mr. Pietila’s narrative centers on residential real estate practices, whose discriminatory
tools were the same everywhere: restrictive covenants, redlining, blockbusting, predatory lending. After the Supreme
Court invalidated residential segregation ordinances in 1917,
other cities copied another Baltimore tradition—private
agreements that prohibited blacks and Jews from specific
neighborhoods. Redlining led to blockbusting. When the
sub-prime mortgage craze began, speculators turned Baltimore into a hotbed of risky lending. It became the first city
to sue a bank for alleged targeting of minorities for subprime loans that would later be foreclosed. Mr. Pietila’s engrossing story is an eye-opening journey into blocks and
neighborhoods, shady practices, and ruthless promoters—
the dark side of the American dream of owning your own
home.
Antero Pietila spent thirty-five years as a reporter with the
Baltimore Sun, most of it covering the city’s neighborhoods,
politics, and government. A native of Finland, he became a
student of racial change during his first visit to the United
States in 1964. He lives in Baltimore.

A Sherri Travis Mystery
Phyllis Smallman
F
lorida has two seasons. The rainy season brings hurricanes, the dry season delivers tourists—and both
can be nasty.
Sherri Travis is tending bar at the Bath and Tennis
Club where two women have been murdered. A rich
socialite, who comes in daily for her quota of side-cars,
decides to commit suicide by being the next victim,
but first she has to decide who the murderer is. There
are more than enough suspects among the staff. At
the head of the list is a charming chef who wants to
cook up something hot with Sherri. There is also a gardener lurking in the bushes, and a pool boy who delivers more than fresh towels.
Sherri pours the drinks and listens to the stories, trying to make sense of it all. With hurricane Myrna raging into the gulf, a murdered tourist at her feet, and a
fallen palm tree blocking the only road off the island,
Sherri battles to stay alive as the murderer closes in.
Phyllis Smallman lives in Southwest Florida and
British Columbia.

A Complete Guide to
the Buddhist Path
Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen
Edited by Khenmo Trinlay Chödron
W
hen our most meaningful and precious possessions are
collected together in a jewel treasury, we cherish it
above all other wealth and never tire of looking at it. Like a
jewel treasury, this text contains a collection of the most valuable teachings of the Buddha’s teachings, beneficial both for
those with a general interest in Buddhism and for serious
practitioners. Essential teachings have been gathered together here as pieces of advice for daily life and, especially,
for the spiritual journey toward enlightenment. It maps out
the essential points of both sutra and tantra from beginning
to end, from the four foundations to the perfection of
buddhahood.
Buddhist teachings provide numerous ideas and methods
for bringing greater meaning and happiness to our lives and
to our relations with others. In this book we are introduced
to these methods through an intimate advice-style commentary in direct, down to earth language. Drawn from The
Jewel Treasury of Advice, a root text written over three hundred years ago by the Buddhist master Drikung Bhande
Dharmaradza, Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen interprets
these ancient teachings with compassion, strength of mind,
warmth, humor, and a keen awareness for their place and
need in contemporary Western life. Buddhist teachings are
vibrantly and accessibly conveyed from a modern day master.
Those who sincerely want to study and practice Buddhism
will find this an indispensable guide that they can read over
and over again.
Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen, founder of several Buddhist centers worldwide, is respected and beloved as an accomplished scholar, meditation master, teacher, translator,
and author. In 2001, he received the high honor of being enthroned as khenchen (great abbot). He lives in Frederick,
Maryland. Khenmo Trinlay Chödron, an American nun
under the tutelage of Khenchen, also lives in Frederick, Maryland.

Is It True What
They Say About
Freemasonry?
2013
Revised Edition
F
Arturo de Hoyos and S. Brent Morris
F
or as long as there have been Freemasons, there has
been a calculated effort to disparage and discredit
them as well as their practices. But why does this incessant attack exist and where does it originate? In this
insightful text, masons de Hoyos and Morris explore
the origins of the anti-Masonic mindset and delve into
the falsehoods on which critics have based these
perennial sentiments. Confronting opponents one at a
time, the authors methodically debunk the myths that
have surrounded Freemasonry since its establishment,
investigating the motives and misconceptions that
drive antagonists to spread deceit about Masonic traditions.
Arturo de Hoyos is the leading authority on the
Scottish Rite’s early history and rituals. He is the author,
translator, and editor of fifteen books on Freemasonry
and is a board member of the Scottish Rite Research
Society. He lives in Burke, VA. S. Brent Morris is the

How to Profit from the Prophets in
the Coming End of the World
N. Nosirrah
or N. Nosirrah, the world is fiction. But, there’s an
unseen world where truth resides, and in the spread
between these worlds is the profit (and maybe a little
transformation.) In this powerful semi-autobiographical, tell-all, self-help, think-and-grow-rich, philosophical treatise and survivalist manual cum novella, he
explores the world monetary collapse and coming end
times with his renowned though contradictory insights, unrelenting scatological wit, and multi-level
marketing offer for readers of this book only. Have you
ever awakened in the night wondering if you would
survive the impact of a meteorite, a mutating viral
pandemic turning the population into flesh eating
zombies, the melting polar ice caps altering the climate into an inhospitable methane laced bog, or simply God raining down fire and brimstone and turning
off the lights? Then this is your essential guide to survival, prosperity and peace when the world ends.
N. Nosirrah resides in a vast but discontinuous universe where he writes fascinating cryptic novellas for a
small, rabid following of readers old enough to know
better but unable to help themselves or anyone else.

Climate of Extremes
Global Warming Science They

O
s the weather truly getting worse? When it comes to
global warming, dire predictions seem to be all we
see or hear. Climatologists Patrick J. Michaels and
Robert C. Balling Jr. explain why the news and information we receive about global warming have become so apocalyptic. The science itself has become
increasingly biased, with warnings of extreme consequences from global warming becoming the norm.
That bias is then communicated through the media,
who focus on the most extreme predictions. The authors compellingly illuminate the other side of the
story, the science we aren’t being told. This body of
work details how the impact of global warming is far
less severe than is generally believed, but it is largely
repressed and ignored. This in-depth exploration
shows that global warming is likely to be modest, and
contrary to the everyday news we receive, there is no
apocalypse on the horizon.
Patrick J. Michaels is a senior fellow in environmental studies at the Cato Institute. Robert C. Balling
Jr. is a professor of climatology at Arizona State University.

Partner Departures and

February–March 2010
nce it was the exception for a partner to leave a
firm. Now the revolving door of partner departures has been deemed a “modern-day law firm fixture.” What steps can a departing partner or an
acquiring firm take to minimize risks and reduce potential liabilities? This book is an essential guide to answering those questions. With years of experience,
author Geri Krauss provides guidance for both the
partner and the acquiring firm in connection with exploring a new affiliation. You will also learn:
• What obligations partners have to their current
partners when looking for a new affiliation
• How a departing partner should communicate
to clients about a departure
• What information a departing partner can
disclose to a potential new firm
• What claims can be brought against the partner
and the new firm if either party fails to follow
these rules
Geri S. Krauss regularly counsels law firms, lawyers
and other professionals in disputes involving partners,
employees and their firms, as well as negotiates and litigates such disputes. Ms. Krauss frequently writes and
speaks on issues involving law firm practice, legal
ethics and employment law, and has appeared as a

tephen Greer arrived in Hong Kong in 1993, a recent college grad with no financing, scant experience, and only a notion of starting some kind of
business. Fourteen years later, his company Hartwell

he encountered cultural roadblocks, ruthless and
sometimes unscrupulous competitors, and learned

This remarkable story is chronicled here with humor,

The Social Agent
A True Intrigue of Sex, Lies, and
Heartbreak Behind the Iron Curtain
Charles Laurence
P
rague in the 1950s was “a city of fear and spies and sooty
fogs,” Charles Laurence writes in the opening lines of The
Social Agent. As the son of the No. 2 man at the British
embassy, Mr. Laurence observed a great deal during the
years his family lived there. And he had to guess at a good
deal more. For during those years and immediately afterward
he perceived sad and chilling changes come over his family.
He experienced the drab repression of Soviet communism
and glimpsed the Stalinist world of spies and terror amidst
the Czech people. Under strange circumstances, his sister
Kate went from being a soul mate and a lively partner-incrime to a veiled and distant girl, almost a cipher. Written
long after these troubling years, The Social Agent is at once a
meticulous dissection of fact and memory and a lyrical evocation of a now vanished world. As Mr. Laurence bravely
recalls the bitterness and heartbreak of his family’s glittering,
tragic years behind the Iron Curtain, his story slowly turns
into a most intriguing tale of espionage. At the center of it
stands a man whose magnetism, sensuality, and romance
were legendary in postwar Europe—Jiri Mucha, son of the
famed artist Alphonse Mucha and a man for whom everything was possible, including deceit, surveillance, and manipulation in his role as a social agent. Here is a marvelous story
of intrigue, fascinating and troubling in much the same way
as the recent German movie The Lives of Others.
Born in London and educated in England, Charles Laurence is a former foreign correspondent for the London Telegraph who covered conflicts ranging from the Falklands War
to the Middle East, India, and Afghanistan before heading
the paper’s New York bureau. Now an American citizen, he
continues to write for British media and lives in Woodstock,
New York.

Dance with Chance
Making Luck Work for You
Spyros Makridakis, Robin M. Hogarth and Anil Gaba
“W
ritten by true experts. Informative yet so much fun
to read!” —Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of The
Black Swan
“Easy-to-digest and highly competent. If everyone were to
read this book, the world would become a more enlightened
place.” —Gerd Gigerenzer, author of Gut Feelings: The Intelligence of the Unconsious
Uneasy with how chance determines a huge part of our
lives, we try to control what cannot be controlled and predict what cannot be predicted. It’s a self-delusion that can
have serious consequences for our personal finances, careers,
happiness and health.
Dance with Chance explains how we all fall foul of this
“Illusion of Control.” Fortunately, when we understand how
luck operates, we can lessen its ill effects. By learning when
to cede control over certain aspects of our life, paradoxically,
we gain more control. By making small changes to our
lifestyle, we can make a huge difference to the things that
matter to us.
From simple investment strategies to warning against
health screenings, the authors offer revolutionary and often
counterintuitive advice to make luck work for you. You’ll find
out why millions of deaths are caused each year by medical
negligence and why a billionaire is no happier than an Eskimo. You’ll discover why no-one predicted the worst financial crisis since the great depression and what makes a sports
star.
Witty, inventive, and informed by the latest findings in
psychology and statistics, Dance with Chance is an essential
guide to navigating the uncertain world in which we live.

The Treatment Trap
How the Medical-Industrial Complex
Is Wrecking Your Health and What You
Can Do to Prevent It
Rosemary Gibson and Janardan P. Singh
U
nless the costs of American health care are reined in
soon, by the year 2025, says the Congressional Budget
Office, they are expected to consume 25 percent of the gross
domestic product. With a new health-care policy a prime
objective of the Obama administration, The Treatment Trap is
a compelling contribution to the current debate. Taking
advantage of Rosemary Gibson’s long encounters with the
nuances of medical care and Janardan Singh’s financial
expertise, the authors explore the most neglected aspect of
American medicine today: the overuse of medical care,
including needless surgery and other invasive procedures,
out-of-control x-ray imaging, profligate testing, and other
wasteful practices that have become routine among too
many American doctors. Their analysis concentrates on the
human aspects of this disturbing trend in health care, with
personal experiences that reflect poorly on hospitals as well
as physicians. They show how money spent for questionable
and even useless care is diverting major funds that could be
better used to treat patients who are genuinely sick and
sometimes cannot afford the extravagant charges of the
American health-care system. Their suggestions for reforming the delivery of health care, and their cautions to individual consumers about how to deal with situations they may
encounter, make The Treatment Trap essential reading for
health-care consumers and policymakers alike.
“This book could mark a turning point in American’s understanding of why health-care costs are exploding. It is a
wake-up call for those who think that market forces alone will
improve the quality of medical care and reduce costs.”
—Christine Cassel, M.D., president, American Board of
Internal Medicine
Rosemary Gibson is senior program officer at the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation, where for thirteen years she has
directed hundreds of millions of dollars in grants aimed at
improving end-of-life care. Janardan P. Singh is an economist at the World Bank and has written extensively on health
care, social policy, and economic development. Both authors
have also written Wall of Silence, a book of narratives about
medical error.

La Ronde
Arthur Schnitzler, In a New Translation by
Nicholas Rudall
F
irst published for private circulation in Vienna in
1900, Arthur Schnitzler’s famous play looks at the
sexual morality and class ideology of his day through
a series of sexual encounters between pairs of characters. When published publicly in 1903, it became an
immediate best-seller, scandalized Viennese society,
and a year later was censored. Schnitzler was accused
of pornography and worse. In 1922 Freud wrote to
him that “you have learned through intuition—
though actually as a result of sensitive introspection—
everything that I have had to unearth by laborious
work on other persons.” By choosing characters across
the social spectrum, La Ronde offers a powerful view of
how sexual contact transgresses boundaries of class.
Nicholas Rudall’s new translation sensitively captures
the language distinctions of the representative characters in the play while providing a remarkably playable
script.
Arthur Schnitzler (1862–1931), Austrian physician, dramatist, and novelist, was among the most sophisticated writers of his time. Nicholas Rudall is
renowned for his translations, especially of Ibsen and
the Greek classics. He is emeritus professor of classics
at the University of Chicago and former artistic director of the Court Theater there. He lives in Chicago.

Chartres and the
Birth of the Cathedral
Revised Edition
Titus Burckhardt; Foreword by John James;
Foreword to the Original Edition by Keith Critchlow
C
hartres Cathedral is one of the undisputed jewels
of medieval Christianity. Throughout its distinguished 800-year history it has been witness to many
miracles, while its steep Gothic spires, splendid statuary, and magnificent stained glass windows have lost
none of their ability to inspire wonder, reverence, and
awe in visiting pilgrims.
This new and revised edition of Titus Burckhardt’s
masterpiece is a richly colored window onto the lofty
intellectual and spiritual climate that conceived the
marvel that is Gothic architecture. Featuring a new appendix with three sections, and a new Foreword from
John James, a world authority of Chartres Cathedral, as
well as 25 new illustrations, it cannot fail to inspire the
sensitive reader to become a pilgrim to the noble sanctuary of Chartres itself.
Author of more than a dozen books, Titus Burckhardt (1908-1984) was a leading member of the
“Perennialist” or “Traditionalist” school of comparative
religious thought and he was also an acknowledged
expert on the sacred art of the East and West.

baseball season of 1944 comes vividly to life. Bill
Veeck, the maverick promoter, returned from Guadalcanal with a leg missing and $500 to his name, has
hustled his way into buying the Philadelphia Athletics.
Hungry for a pennant, young Veeck jettisons the
team’s white players and secretly recruits the legendary stars of the Negro Leagues, fielding a club that
will go down in baseball annals as one of the greatest
ever to play the game. Here are the behind-the-scenes
adventures that bring this dream to reality, and a cast
of characters only history’s pen could create. The End

story in years, the unvarnished truth of that incredible
season and the men who lived it.

Committee on Nonprofit Organizations
T
he Model Nonprofit Corporation Act, Third Edition
contains all amendments to the text of the Model
Act and Official Comments Adopted August 2008. The
original MNCA was prepared by the Committee on
Corporate Laws in 1952 and has evolved. The Model
Nonprofit Corporation Act, Third Edition follows the
Model Business Corporation Act provisions to the extent possible, distinguishing nonprofit corporations
from profit corporations, eliminates the classification
scheme included in the Revised MNCA, and makes the
provisions pertaining to the role of the attorney general with a suggestion to adopting states that provisions regarding the supervision of nonprofit
organizations would be located in a different place in
the state’s statutory scheme. Other significant changes
involve fundamental transactions, the use of alternative governance arrangements, and the elimination of
cumulative voting.

he perfect resource for inventors or small business
entrepreneurs, this monograph provides practical
guidelines for marketing an invention. It presents general information in an effort to help move an invention

Among the topics covered include:
• Evaluating the potential of new technology
• Drafting a business plan
• Going into business for yourself

Climate Wars
We Are Not Alone
Gwynne Dyer
Why We Have Already Found
Extraterrestrial Life
F
rom one of the world’s great geopolitical analysts,
here is a terrifying glimpse of the none-too-distant
future, when climate change will force the world’s
powers into a desperate struggle for advantage and
even survival.
Dwindling resources. Massive population shifts.
Natural disasters. Spreading epidemics. Drought. Rising sea levels. Plummeting agricultural yields. Crashing
economies. Political extremism. These are some of the
expected consequences of runaway climate change in
the decades ahead, and any of them could tip the
world towards conflict. Prescient, unflinching, and
based on exhaustive research, Climate Wars promises
to be one of the most important books of the coming
years.
Gwynne Dyer has worked as a freelance journalist,
columnist, author, broadcaster, and lecturer on international affairs for more than 20 years. Dyer has served
in the Canadian, British and American navies and
holds a Ph.D. in war studies from the University of London. His twice-weekly column on international affairs
is published by 175 newspapers in some 45 countries.

Dirk Schulze-Makuch and David Darling
T
he question “Are we alone?” has permeated
human thought since ancient times. In this compelling controversial work, the authors argue that extraterrestrial life is astrobiological fact. Far from
existing light-years away in the outer reaches of space,
for persuasive evidence we need look no further than
our celestial neighbour, Mars.
Expertly probing the latest scientific evidence for
microbial life, including from Phoenix, which landed
on Mars in 2008, Schulze-Makuch and Darling assert
that extraterrestrial life is a near certainty both in the
Solar System and beyond. Also exploring the potentially huge implications of future encounters with intelligent otherworldly beings, this book provides a
thrilling read for anyone interested in popular science
or science fiction.
Dirk Schulze-Makuch is currently an Associate Professor in Astrobiology at Washington State University.
His research has been widely published in media ranging from academic journals to The New Scientist. He
lives in Pullman, WA. David Darling is an award winning popular science writer and the bestselling author
of Equations of Eternity. He lives in the UK.

I
stanbul’s Grand Bazaar, with its more than 4000
shops selling everything from Turkish carpets and
leather to jewelry, ceramics and antiques, is one of the
world’s most famous tourist destinations. Yet few visitors explore the surrounding neighborhoods, filled
with centuries-old mosques, imperial Ottoman buildings, and former inns where merchants once stayed
with their caravans. From the magnificent 16th-century Suleymaniye Mosque and the hidden nooks of
the Grand Bazaar, to workshops where artisans still
continue traditional trades, this is one of the most fascinating and least-known parts of city. Four accessible
self-guided tours take visitors “off the beaten path”
through the Bazaar Quarter. The book also contains
detailed maps, numerous full-color photographs,
background information on the Ottoman Sultans,
Islam and mosques, and a glossary.
Ann Marie Mershon, a resident of Minnesota, has
taught English in both the U.S. and Turkey, and has
written for many U.S. newspapers and magazines.
Edda Renker Weissenbacher grew up in Istanbul and
now divides her time between Turkey and Austria. For
many years she has led informal guided tours of Istanbul’s historic districts.

Moon Loon
Sandy Ferguson Fuller
I
n the dark, soft night, the haunting call of a single
loon echoes over a moonlit lake. All through the day,
only one magnificent black and white bird scribes ripples across the surface. Why is he so alone?
Moon Loon is an evocative, gentle bedtime story
about a girl who is fascinated by this solitary loon. All
through the summer, as she enjoys canoeing, swimming, and watching wildlife, she wonders about the
lonely bird and what his life is like. Through richly layered colored-pencil illustrations, we follow the girl’s
musings on the loon from spring through fall.
In addition to being an author and illustrator,
Sandy Ferguson Fuller also is a professional consultant and agent for other writers and illustrators of
books for children and young adults. She has also
been director of the children’s book division of a regional book wholesaler and a national sales coordinator in the children’s book division of a publishing
house. Sandy lives in Aspen Spring, Colorado.
