Sales Management Comments
Definitely 2009 was the year of change for sale dates and locations
and Simmsational was not immune. This is certainly a change for
the better, thanks to the Johnstone family for their efforts to host one
of Canada’s longest running Simmental sales.

The continuing economic theme of banding together provincially,
Simmsational being one the major prototypes, to market Simmental
more efficiently is seen happening, as I have mentioned in other
editorials, in Red Deer, Alberta at the newly established Alberta Simmental Weekend; in Mt. Forest, Ontario at the Autumn Classic; in
Cheneville, Quebec at the Ferme Gagnon & Guests/Quebec Simmental
Association sale; and of course here at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
The efficiency of convenience and economics to buyer, seller and
spectator alike, not to mention regional marketing responsibility, is
the template most have preferred and chosen.

Simmsational has had modifications this year, but the foundation of
reputation quality stays a constant within the annual mini-production
sales for LaBatte Simmentals and Crossroads Farm and the special
selected consignments from the Simmsational and SSBA groups. As
mentioned before, this is the prototype for provincially cooperative
Simmental sales events and is often described as the top annual
consignment sale of the year.
Agenda
11:00 a.m.

Welcome to Simmsational 2009!, the thirty-second consecutive sale of this great event, in which we have had the pleasure of being involved
in all of them. Something a little different though this year, new date and new venue, but still the same good cattle and great consignors
involved.
We are consigning 10 bred heifers this year from the heart of our program. We feel this might be the strongest set we have ever offered at
Simmsational. Headed by six red factor females that we are exceptionally proud of, five of them sired by TNT Accelerator 226S, the Gunner
son that is just doing a super job for us, as evidenced by the acceptance of his bull calves this spring, where 17 of his sons averaged $6400.
Two really good solid black heifers bred to the $45,000 KBR Exciter 758T bull. Wait till you see his bull calves at our spring bull sale; we
think these are exceptional. And we are consigning two beautiful daughters of Double Bar D Mirage 103S in our fullblood segment – two full
flecks bred to the homozygous polled full Fleck bull, Red Deal.
Come join us at Johnstone Auction Mart on Thursday, December 10th, 4 miles west of Moose Jaw on highway #1 for some hospitality,
food, fun and great cattle. From all of us at LaBatte Simmentals, we welcome you to this 32nd Simmsational Sale and wish you all a very
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
P.S. Grand kids are doing great, all five of them, the latest being Zayne LaBatte born in May this year. I expect they’ll all be at the sale.

FULL FLECKVIEH. A super polled full Fleckvieh daughter of Double Bar D Mirage out of Perdita 9L.
She’s red goggle eyed, deep bodied, very feminine and setting up a real nice udder – a brood cow
in the making. We have a polled full sister to Macey again in the heifer pen that looks just like her.
These are the first daughters of Mirage to sell and we are very proud of them. Mirage is a polled,
full Fleck bull that possesses lots of rib, depth, quarter and bone, something the polled fullbloods
need more of. Macey is bred early to the exciting homozygous polled full Fleck bull, Gibby’s Real
Deal. We had the opportunity to winter this bull when he was coming a yearling and really liked a
lot of things we saw in him; his dark red color, lots of muscle, rib and great hair coat. We had a
few Real Deal calves later this spring and really liked the calving ease, smoothness and structure
of his calves. We think Macey 199U is going to make a polled full Fleck front pasture cow and
bred early to Real Deal, the resulting calf should be very exciting.

FULL FLECKVIEH This is a tremendous Mirage
daughter out of a super Laredo daughter going
back to the Bar None 225 cow family. The Laredo
females are tremendous cows and Mirage is adding
his depth, thickness and power to them. Macey 50U
has brood cow written all over her; lots of depth, pigment, pear-shaped and is setting up a beautiful udder.
Again bred to the homozygous polled full Fleck bull,
Gibby’s Real Deal.

A true sale feature – this TNT Accelerator daughter is one of the best females ever produced,
in our mind, at LaBatte Simmentals. She comes to you out of the Shamrock cow family
going back to our donor cow, IPU Ms Shamrock 120L. Shamrock 43U’s dam, 172R, is
a beautifully uddered Redknight daughter who is making her own history in our herd. Her
first calf, a heifer 111T, is one of our top first calf heifers, then 43U and she now has one of our feature bulls in our bull pen this year and will calve in January this coming year. She’s
not far away from our donor program. 43U is bred early to the calving ease bull, IPU Red Specialist 70T, who Remington Cattle Co. Purchased out of our 2008 Bull Sale for $16,000.
Ask Gary Rairdon, manager of Remington, what he thinks about Specialist. This mating should result in a super calf, whether a heifer or a bull. We believe Shamrock 43U will be a very
special cow some day for her new owner. She is what the future of this breed is all about; deep, soggy, easy fleshing females, yet feminine and productive. As we said before, we think
she is truly a sale feature.

EPDs: 2.5 4.0 43.5 72.5 -4.5 27.4 5.6
A solid red smooth polled daughter of Accelerator out of one of our favorite cows, Miss Pelton
108L. This beautifully fronted, long, deep, broody female is a maternal sister to the heifer Hay
Valley Ranches of Cochrane, AB purchased at last year’s Simmsational Sale. And Red Essence 84U is bred to IPU Red Warrior 26S, the Red Chief son that was our high selling bull in our
2007 Bull Sale selling for $26,000 to Tatshenshini Simmentals, John and Lynne Smith of Bonanza, AB. Everyone who know us, knows what we think of our Red Chief daughters; they
are the best! We had the misfortune of losing Red Chief a few years ago, but were lucky because we had some on farm collected semen on him. Well, we weren’t so lucky as the semen
quality was very, very poor. So the search was on to find one of the best Red Chief sons we have sold. Our search ended at John and Lynne’s place as Warrior 26S is doing a great job
for them. When we sold him as a yearling, he was smooth made, had lots of butt and testicles, exceptional length, great disposition, lots of hair, was cherry red and homozygous polled.
He was mothered by one of our best cows, a Bodybuilder female, FTS Hot Toddie 142N. With Red Chief and Bodybuilder in his pedigree, the females should be awesome as we all know
how good the Bodybuilder females are also. John is very high on Warrior’s progeny as he calves good, sires the dark red color, are thick and meaty and the heifers are exceptional. We
were lucky enough to obtain some semen on him and used him heavily in our breeding program this year. We think the Accelerator – Red Warrior 26S cross will be exceptional.

Here’s a dark cherry red, blaze face Accelerator daughter out of a super Red Chief cow,
Pocahontas 33R. This heifer is moderate framed, easy fleshing, deep, stylish and broody.
We think there is going to be more demand for these blaze face bulls by our commercial bull
customers in the upcoming years. This female would be a great addition to raise those kind
for our valued commercial bull buyers. Essence 99U is bred to Red Teddy, a bull who has left
his mark on the Simmental breed, with many of his bulls and females topping many sales.
Accelerator – Red Chief – Red Teddy; a powerful pedigree for Red Essence’s 2010 calf.

What a job he has done for us on bulls and females. This heifer should have a great chance
of being homozygous polled as the three sires in a row are all homozygous polled and she
is bred to the easy calving homozygous polled bull, WS Beef Maker, the Hooks Shear Force
son out of a Ribeye daughter that is so popular in the U.S. as he combines calving ease,

mother of Bob Anderson’s
great herd sire, IPU T-Bone
13R, who has done such a
great job for him. The Jazz
cow is a beautiful, very easy fleshing, good uddered Preferred Zima daughter that just never misses. She has a Southpaw
Turbo Charged son in the bull pen this year that will be a sale feature in our bull sale in the spring. We’ve already tested him
and he’s homozygous polled. 190U’s sire, Red Mercedes, was the high selling bull out of TNT’s sale in North Dakota in 2007.
He is a half brother to TNT Accelerator 226S. This deep bodied, well balanced, Mercedes daughter will make a great cow and
is mated to the homozygous polled Red Chief son, Red Warrior.

Another sale feature Accelerator daughter. This awesome, big time volume heifer is going
to make quite a brood cow. She has mother, donor cow written all over her. She has
tremendous length, depth, volume, is setting up a beautiful udder and yet is nice fronted
and has a beautiful peaked polled head. Her homozygous polled full brother in our bull
pen could possibly be our headliner in our 2010 Bull Sale. He is built just like her. The
key to this cow family is the full Fleck cow, RAJ Ms Baltimore 51G, the great grandmother to 203U. She was the top producing
cow for the great Ferme Gagnon herd in Quebec for many years. I had the privilege of judging the Toronto Royal Show in 2005
and 51G’s daughter and granddaughter were my pick to be Grand Champion of the show. I tried to buy 205R then, but they
wouldn’t sell her, but the next year they entered her in the Red & Black Sale in Red Deer and we were able to purchase her as
one of the high selling lots. She has not disappointed and is now one of our feature cows. Essence 203U we think, will be one
of the feature heifers to sell this fall, bred to the exciting Warrior 26S bull. There should be a lot of future in this female and we’ll
hear a lot more about her down the road.

A super deep ribbed Hero heifer, again going back to
the 304Y cow family. 304Y herself was a high capacity,
extremely deep ribbed cow that left a mark in our black

The Hero daughters are making super broody cows, all
with excellent udders and lots of capacity and she also is

For us, Simmsational has always been one of the most favorite sales of the year to attend and is where we purchased our first registered
females 14 years ago. This is our 3rd year as consignors to this elite sale and we look forward to joining the other great breeders in showcasing some of the top Simmental females to be sold this year.
We are proud to bring you a quality set of females bred to exciting new herd sires that we have used extensively throughout our program.
We continue to have strong Bull sales and just this past weekend received the honor again of Grand Champion pen of bulls (all breeds) at
the highly competitive Edam Fall Fair. I think this year’s set of bull calves are our best ever, and most of the credit has to go to the females
for their consistent production of quality.
Our group of heifers represents the strength of our program and we’ve tried to bring something for everyone; Full Fleck, Polled, Red and Black. We feel confident that every one of
these females will work well and make a positive impact on their new owner’s programs.
This year we welcome you to the new Simmsational location in Moose Jaw, where you can
expect a great set of quality cattle, good people, food and some Christmas cheer.
Sincerely,
Gerald, Laurie
Jody & Jackie
P.S. Another little bundle of joy arrived in January. 4 little grandchildren from 9 months to 6
years. We certainly are blessed. From all of us at Crossroad Farms, we wish you a Merry
Christmas and all the very best in the New Year!

FULL FLECKVIEH. Utah is a dark cherry red feature heifer that is 5 generations Fleckvieh. Her
dam continues to produce top quality offspring year after year. She has given us 2 tremendous
daughters that are working in the herd and this year has raised an outstanding 14P Evan bull calf
that will be shown at Edam and Lloydminster and will certainly be popular at our bull sale February
24th. Another stunning son, Crossroad Radical Red, sold at our 2nd annual bull sale to Twin Brae
Simmentals for $11,000. Utah is from the heart of our program. We offer her with confidence
knowing that she has all the quality and style needed to be a top producing foundation female.
A.I. bred to the stylish dark cherry red, $24,500 Crossroad Radium that was purchased by Doug
Krepps of Wapiti Consulting at our 2009 bull sale. This resulting calf will give you a very unique

Opportunity knocks! 89W, 447W and 82W are transplant maternal sisters out of our great Miss Noremac 16M cow. 16M needs absolutely no introduction. She has progeny of both sexes
working in purebred and commercial herds right across Canada. She is a true elite donor. She typically averages well over 15 embryos per flush and the resulting offspring have topped many
sales, but more importantly go on to excel in production for their respective owners. 89W, 447W and 82W are all unique individuals in their own right yet display many similar important
qualities. They all have the volume, thickness, muscle and are easy fleshing which is so important in today’s industry. The maternal strength that is bred so deep into their pedigree will
insure they develop into elite brood cows and each have the potential to be front end donor females. Opportunities like this are not easy to find!

fantastic quarter. She is also very feminine fronted and will develop a picture perfect udder

Another typical 680S daughter. She is stout made, loaded with meat, muscle and full of
volume. Again, she has the exceptional temperament and hair coat synonymous with the
680S offspring. 214W’s Black Stetson dam is proving herself to be a top producer for us.
She is moderate framed, easy doing, quiet and has a very nice udder. Don’t pass her up;
she is loaded with potential.

117W is a heifer loaded with potential. She is an own daughter of 680S himself out of a
Black Garrison cow going back to none other than LBR 316C, a true foundation cow that
walked the pastures at LaBatte Simmentals for many years. 117W is super long spined,
yet still has the thick top and muscle the 680S calves all have. Take a second look at this
heifer; I think she may be one of the hidden treasures at this year’s sale.

A super stout 680S daughter that is going to make a super brood cow. When we decided
to use 680S in our A.I. program, we were searching for a homozygous black, homozygous
polled sire that would produce moderate framed, thick, easy doing cattle that are structurally
correct. I can honestly say he has more than exceeded our expectations, but don’t take my
word for it, just have a look at the four daughters in our offering. 505W is super stout, full
of volume and red meat. She has a tremendous hair coat and the 680S calves born here to
date all have exceptional temperaments, 505W being no exception. When Jay was around
this summer, he noticed 505W and her impressive dam right away. Please ask him just
how good she is. A maternal sister sold to Michael and Jon Verstegen of Caron SK. and in
my opinion, she was one of the best black females we have ever raised. 505W will have
many friends come sale day.

I sound repetitious when describing these 680S calves, but this type of consistency is truly
a good thing. 476W is just like the rest. She is super stout made, loaded with meat, muscle
and full of volume. We purchased 476’s dam, MMP Bittersweet 37N, from the Pearson’s
a few years ago and she has simply exceeded all our expectations. She is quiet, moderate
framed, easy doing with the ideal udder. 476W’s future looks to be very bright and we think
the sky is the limit.

A Rustler daughter that is going to make a real brood cow. Our Rustler daughters have truly
impressed us. They are moderate framed, easy doing with structurally correct udders and
milk extremely well. 119W’s dam is made just the same. She is moderate framed and has
exceptional volume with a very impressive udder. 119W herself is a long spined, loose made,
deep sided female with an exceptional hair coat. A maternal sister was a standout in last
year’s calf crop. She sold to Michael and Jon Verstegen from Caron SK. and they report she
has developed into a deep, broody bred heifer and can’t wait to see her first calf. Michael
and Jon have a keen eye for the good ones and are putting together a very impressive set
of black Simmental females. 119W is worth a second look!

Another Edge daughter coming in a red package. We cannot say enough about Blackedge

Waneta has been a standout since birth. We had a tough time putting her in the sale as
she is our best heifer this year, but we always try to bring out our best for this sale. She is
extremely long, deep and has tremendous hip. She has tons of natural thickness and is still
very structurally correct and moves very freely. She is out of a super uddered Black Creek

Wynona is another top heifer in our pen this year. She is very moderate framed, deep sided
and easy doing. Both of our heifers in the sale this year are out of our new herd bull Tornado.
His calves are as consistent of a group as we have ever had and we are very excited about
his future progeny. Her dam is never any visitor’s pick of the cows, but she is a very hard
working cow that always raises a good calf…her lasts year’s calf is our top bred heifer. We
feel this heifer will fit well into anyone’s program.

Walk My Way is a very moderate framed calf with lots of thickness and is extremely heavy
muscled for his age. With his smaller frame and light birth weight he still has a lot of performance. These qualities, together with a calving ease EPD of +15.3, we feel he could
start in your heifer pen and then be used on some big cows, where we think you would
be very happy with the performance and type of his progeny. Walk My Way goes back to

When we partnered with Yellow Rose to buy Turbo, we had a plan in mind. We were hoping
he would moderate frame without sacrificing performance, take the horns off, and make
them all cherry red. I can truthfully say that he has exceeded all of our expectations. They
are damn good calves! You will hear a lot more about the Turbo progeny in the future. We
wanted to put more Turbo heifers in this sale, but as we used him late last year, this is by far
his oldest heifer at our ranch. 56W is out of an excellent cow family of high producing, bigger
cows. The old foundation red cow, 57H, had four daughters sell through this sale.

Fortune Builder is a bull that we purchased in partnership with Kelly Ashworth out of the
TNT bull sale. He sires real performance cattle, leaving high gaining bulls and big, soggy
daughters that milk well. I guess we don’t have to wonder if the Lottery 80S cow has enough
milk...just look at the 200 day adjusted weight of this heifer. 59 W had an actual weaning
weight of 810 lbs. at 178 days of age. You can expect 59W to grow into a big and deep
bodied, high producing cow.

muscling, milk, mothering ability and performance makes this meat machine a must have
for the astute cattleman. And let’s not forget he is polled, although with small scurs. His
dam has been an excellent producer for us since she was bought out of this sale a few
years back from Crocus Simmentals. Two daughters have been kept for replacements, two
sons went to the PFRA, one son was kept for herd sire duties here at home, one son went
through this sale two years ago to the Noble Brothers, and here is the next son. Who will
take him home? He will work any way you want to breed him. Want to try Red Factor, go
for it, the proof is in the heifer calf I have in the sale. She is out of his maternal sister who
is a red factor cow and is simply awesome. 10W will be shown at Agribition.

SunRise is double polled and double red. A little younger than some of the other bulls but
just as good, if not better. Dark red color, disposition second to none, volume, thickness,
performance, and a very consistent mother, what more could you want in a potential
herdsire. His maternal sister has our best replacement heifer calf this year. Two daughters
kept for replacements, one son to a Charolois breeder and this chunk for sale here. 47P
really works well with my senior herdsire Red Sundown 01N. SunRise’s best asset
though may be his daughters; if they have his mother’s consistency and his grand dam’s
maternal traits with his sire’s performance, you will want a whole herd of his daughters.
His paternal sister 32U sells in this sale as well. Check her out to see what his daughters
will look like. Red Sundown 01N stamps them all with the look, and it passes on through
to the next generation as well.

32U is a big volume, solid cherry red heifer. Tremendous volume, good performance, and
excellent maternal traits are all part of the package on this heifer. This will be your last
chance to grab up one of these good Red Sundown 01N daughters as I lost him to a breeding
accident last winter, though I do have a small bank of semen on him. Any heifers I get will
be going back into the herd for replacements. They can’t be beat for temperament, maternal
ability, do ability, and performance. Her full sister went through this sale a couple of years
back to Kevin Kelly. As a bonus they will cross well with just about anything.

Red Warrior 69S was bought to cross on my Red Sundown 01N daughters, and here is the
first one. She is a dandy. Penny is a copper colored heifer, double polled, double red, and
super quiet. A little smaller framed, but with lots of volume and good thickness. She will have
a good udder, good feet, and be an excellent producer. She goes back to 27K, the dam of
10W the fullblood bull in the sale. Her maternal brother sold to the good commercial herd

75U is a solid black Full Figures daughter. Typical pattern of the other Full Figures daughters
I have seen. If she produces like the daughter I have at home, she will be a tremendous
cow, calve easy, milk well, breed back and hold her condition. She gets those traits from
her sire as well as a double dose from her dam’s side, and her grand dam as well. Multi
generation black or red and polled; her grand dam 41L is one of the best cows in the herd.
Her maternal sister sold through this sale last year to Ory Christie.

Virginia Ranches retained Red Texas as a herd sire, but offered semen packages at their
spring bull sale. The semen we purchased was used on some of our best cows and the
resulting bull and heifer calves are outstanding. Miss Texas is very docile, heavy haired
and a real beef heifer from a powerful cow family. This cow family produced EDN Star 13S,
who was Grand Champion Female at the Maple Creek 4-H Regional show as a 2 year old
cow/calf pair and again as a 3 year old.

Here is a black female who packs tremendous punch in a smaller package. Boo Berry is
one of our first sale offerings from our new herdsire, Prairie Wind Blackberry. She is very
sound and stout, with a sweet disposition; which are some of Blackberry’s strengths. Her
mother’s pedigree combines some of Porter Simmentals’ top cows with newer, powerful
genetics. Top that off with Boo Berry’s mating to Red Caesar, and this is a female that could
definitely carry a red and black program forward.

Craig Mills selected 82R out of Ultra’s red dispersal sale for us. 31U is a clean fronted, deep
sided type of heifer. She is bred to the 2007 CWA Reserve Grand Champion Bull Wheatland
Red Ace, who also topped Wheatland’s sale that year.

Here is one of those cow families that was hard to part with. You have to stand behind this
heifer to appreciate her natural thickness. She has brood cow written all over her. They don’t
come any darker than this. 75U is mated to General Lee for an early January calf.

Tried, tested & true – best describes Bodybuilder. Be it sons or daughters he has consistently produced both and 14W will just add to his credits. The dam is a very productive
eight year old cow (looking less than half her age) with a very neat and tidy udder. 20L
consistently produces replacement heifers and very saleable sons. Buy with confidence
from proven genetics.

She is sired by one of the most dominant and consistent bulls in the breed and out of a
beautiful uddered Good A Nuff mother. She has easily come to the top of the pen with her
dark red color, tremendous spring of rib and easy fleshing ability. These Red Label daughters
are sweet fronted, deep bodied females that go on to be top producers and 112U will be no
exception. The service to Shear Force presents a tremendous opportunity. The resulting
calf will be four times polled, four generations red/black – a very powerful package. This
heifer truly deserves your consideration.

Cow families are everything to us and this is one of our very best. The Bodybuilder daughters
are widely known as some of the top producing females in the breed. The addition of Gunner
has produced an eye appealing, free moving female with extra depth and capacity. We really
believe that 26U will produce as well for her new owners as her mother and grandmother
have for us. This heifer represents a tremendous opportunity for herd improvement.

Out of the Lorna cow family, which is full of power and performance and loads of milk. Then
add in Wheatland Red Hummer and you get an outstanding brood cow prospect with a big
top, big hip; a quiet easy doing female. These Red Hummer calves are outstanding.

This is the first KBR Black Exciter calf to sell and she is a good one. Her mother has a
great udder and her milk production is ideal. Miss Swan 9W is deep bodied and very easy
fleshing; a great brood cow in the making.
