If you want to catch the game somewhere
south of Wrigleyville, check out the newly-revamped John Barleycorn space in Lincoln Park.
Now called Varsity Club (2142 N. Clybourn,
773.348.0414), the well-loved hangout is suddenly more sports-centric than ever. Thirty-plus
flat-screen TVs are tuned into games of every
sort, ranging from soccer to hockey to pay-perview boxing. Ballpark fare dominates the menu,
which is laden with hot dogs, jumbo pretzels
doused in cheese sauce and ice cream sandwiches for dessert. To combat your hangover
woes, head by Varsity Club on Sunday afternoons and load up on tomato-flavored salvation from the weekend Bloody Mary Bar. }}

After shutting down Meritage Café & and Wine Bar,
owner Christopher Peckat
set his sights on a new venture. His recently opened
Risqué Café (3941 N.

more than 200 craft brews
from all over the nation.
Café-dwellers will also find

stick-to-your-ribs fare. Meat is slow-cooked in
onsite bourbon barrels, giving the Pulled Pork

Sausage ($8) sandwiches and the requisite Baby
Back Ribs ($18). Side dishes focus on barbeque
staples like Baked Beans, Potato Salad and Corn
on the Cob ($3 each.) The café’s saucy name
is channeled in décor that features 6-foot-tall
pin-up girl pictures, campy red walls and
42-inch plasma screens showing blush-provoking B-movies.
Another popular sports bar that recently got a face-lift: Sheffield’s (3258 N. Sheffield,
773.281.4989). Known for its sizeable beer garden and great beer selection, the Lakeview hangout recently took things up a notch with a décor overhaul and the introduction of a new Backroom Barbeque menu. Slinging out beer for 30 years, the bar had
a well-worn, dive-y feel that has been replaced with a contemporary vibe. The new

Does the thought of eating snails make you squeamish? Are you intrigued or intimidated by foreign flavors? Well, it’s time to take a hiatus from mainstream fare and
embrace the exotic. Chicago’s dining scene offers a plethora of creative dishes that are

guaranteed to give you a taste of something entirely unexpected. So steer clear of the
traditional pasta and pizza and get ready for a culinary adventure.
While the menu at Sola (3868 N. Lincoln, 773.327.3868) offers upscale American
cuisine with gourmet twists on traditional entrees, one particularly unusual appetizer
stands out. For those looking to experiment, order the Quail Tempura ($11) with natural jus and citrus chile dipping sauce. According to Executive Chef Carol Wallack, “It’s
an Asian twist on a classic dish…fried chicken! It’s tempura poultry with an Asian style
dipping sauce. It suits our concept and matches with the other ‘exotic’ flavors that pepper our menu, including yuzu, wasabi, ginger, etc.” And the reward for venturing outside your culinary comfort zone is a twist on an American classic…their delectable Taffy
Apple Pie ($7), with brown butter macadamia ice cream and calvados cider syrup.
Chicago is the unofficial headquarters of
deep-dish style pizza and we are certainly
proud of our fame. We have perfected the
pie and are nationally known for the classic combo of thick crust, zesty red sauce
and plenty of mozzarella cheese. However,
there’s more to this traditional dish than the
typical toppings. La Madia (59 W. Grand,
312.329.0400) is a contemporary pizzeria with a progressive approach. The menu
offers variations on the tried and true, balancing the traditional Margherita with more
experimental options. If you’re willing to
forgo the familiar, taste this peculiar pizza:

Chef/Owner Jonathan Fox, “Seafood on pizza is unexpected in the States. However,
it’s natural in Italy, so it makes sense.” If you’d rather experience the exotic through a

candy syrup. Bottom’s up!
Fine dining destination one sixtyblue
(1400 W. Randolph, 312.850.0303) takes
exotic eating to another level. Their diverse
menu emphasizes specially selected ingredients…and may require a translation from
the server. However, don’t be deterred
by the unknown–these culinary concoctions are guaranteed to surprise and satisfy. Chef Martial Noguier recommends the
Warm Rabbit Confit Salad ($17) because
he loves the rich flavor, especially in winter.
According to the expert, the combination
of the rabbit meat and duck fat enhances
the taste even more. The salad is a mixture
of rabbit legs confited in duck fat, lardons,

a little Staub pot underneath a fresh salad of pomegranate, frisee, chive, diced shallot, rabbit ragout and honey-Dijon vinaigrette. The dish is garnished with brioche croutons, a pancetta chip and a few sprigs of chervil. Or, if seafood is more your style, you
can sample the Grilled Octopus Salad ($16), with local cauliflower purée, poached calamari, pickled autumn vegetables, coriander seed and lemon vinaigrette. Don’t forget to extend your experimentation to the wine list and tap the vast expertise of Wine

As the only four-star Italian restaurant in Chicago, Spiaggia (980 N. Michigan,
312.280.3300) takes culinary excellence to another level. While some establishments
dabble with exotic ingredients, Spiaggia excels. At the helm is Chef Tony Mantuano,
named “The Best Chef: Midwest” in 2005 by the prestigious James Beard Foundation. A renowned figure on the international dining scene, Mantuano is known for utilizing rare, authentic Italian products of the highest quality. One of his gourmet creations is Sogliola, Cosce di Rane e Pagliolaia
($45), made with poached Dover sole, woodroasted frog legs, crispy dewlap, quail egg
and purgatory bean puree. This complex dish
eschews one very important item. “The most
important ingredient is the one you leave out,”
says Mantuano. “To achieve this simplicity, we
use the freshest, rarest ingredients available
from Italy. Purveyors know that we are always
looking for something unique like cuttlefish
eggs, dewlap, fresh sea urchin and Mediterranean sea bass. We let freshness guide
our menu.” Another testament to Spiaggia’s
gourmet standards and unique offerings are
their Italian botanical cheeses. Added to the
menu last summer, the cheeses are wrapped
in botanicals such as cherry leaves, hay, grape
leaves and tobacco to absorb the flavor and
musk of the botanical. Without a doubt, Spiaggia is a haven for both adventurous diners
and food connoisseurs alike, offering Italy’s

the ingredients the better. That isn’t to say that whiskey isn’t a complex spirit–it’s quite
the contrary actually. Whiskeys can be single malt, single grain or blended. There are
also regional differences. For instance, whisky made in Scotland is referred to as Scotch
in the U.S., and Irish whiskey is always spelled with an “e.” Also, corn-based whiskey
produced in Kentucky is known as bourbon and whiskey from Tennessee has a noticeable sweet flavor.
While it takes years to become a connoisseur, we’ve summarized the basic art and science of whiskeys. Now, the next time you want to impress a drinking buddy you can
order a Single Highlands Malt Scotch and actually know what you’re talking about.
And you don’t have to travel to Scotland or Ireland for an authentic whiskey experience: Chicago is home to several whiskey meccas that would do any aficionado
proud.

it’s the Irish institution The Cork and Kerry (10614 S.
Western, 773.445.2675). And in honor of the festivities that surround the beloved holiday, it’s no surprise
that both Bushmills and Jameson are releasing limited
edition blended whiskeys. Bushmills 1608 was produced in honor of the distillery’s 400th anniversary of
the original license to distill granted for the town of
Bushmills. The limited edition is worth the splurge, as
its distinct toffee and chocolaty notes results in a smooth finish. The heart of the blend
is Bushmills malt whiskey. It is distilled with crystal malt, which is rarely used in the production of whiskey making. Only available for a few months, Binny’s (213 W. Grand,
312.332.0012) and Sam’s Wines and Spirits (1720 N. Marcey, 312.664.4394) will
carry the anniversary blend, but it does come at a steep price: $100.
The release of the Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve stems from the
collaboration of four Jameson Masters. These include a Master Distiller,
a Master Blender, a Master of Maturation and a Master of Whiskey Science–who knew! Valued at $250 a bottle, aged grain whiskeys were
blended with rare, traditional pot still whiskeys and this unique aging
process produced a spirit with depth and complexity. The Rarest Vintage
Reserve is only available during the month of March and whiskey devotees will have to call 877.774.7487 to inquire about purchasing a bottle. For those who want to experience one of Jameson’s storied whiskey
expressions, opt for the original Jameson or Jameson’s 12 Year Old

Adrianne Curry: No. The simple fact is that I haven’t been fully paid for what I did on

What are
these
“AntiAging”
creams?
Irvin Wiesman, MD
The biggest culprit to aging skin is UV radiation, or the sun. On the cellular level, UV
radiation breaks down collagen and weakens connective tissue. It also produces freeradicals, molecules that are particularly reactive and unstable, which further damages
the cells and collagen in the skin. The combination of the above mechanisms leads to
aging. The skin protects itself with naturally occurring antioxidants, such as vitamins A,
C, E, squalene and coenzyme Q-10, which neutralizes the free radicals. As we age,
our skin becomes depleted of these protective antioxidants. Many skin care products
attempt to replace these diminishing antioxidants.
Let’s go over the most common ingredients found in the over

So let’s get planning…
Tea has been around for nearly 5,000 years and, believe it or not, is the world’s second most consumed beverage after water. Its colorful history dates back to 2737 BC.
A popular myth says that the Emperor of China accidentally discovered tea when the
wind blew tea leaves into the bowl of boiled water he was drinking. The flavor and
rejuvenating properties were unlike anything he had tried before. Soon tea spread
across the country. In late 500 AD, Japanese monks introduced tea to Japan at the
same time as Buddhism. In both countries, tea was at first rare, costly and reserved only

England became known for afternoon teas thanks to a duke’s wife. She began having

When I travel, collecting treasures from local flea markets, antique stores and shops
keeps my passion for adventure as close as my kitchen shelves. There are so many gorgeous cups, glasses, teapots, petite plates, tea trays and the like–it makes throwing a
tea party as fun as it sounds. It is great fun for both young and old–and is just as timeless as taking tea itself. While you can find teas at local shops, groceries and markets,
my favorite is Liif Tea. They are a Chicago-based, woman-owned importer of specialty
loose leaf tea. They have designed destination tea events alongside the well known

Don’t rely solely on MySpace or text messaging. Don’t hide behind technology.
Be bold and understand when a text message is appropriate and when it makes you
appear intimidated or perhaps under the influence. If you’re into him, don’t respond
to his voicemail with a Facebook message. Similarly, if he asks you out over email or
a text message, you can give him one free pass, but if it continues you have to let him
know that playing too cool for school isn’t your style. If a guy wants to ask you out he
needs to remember how to pick up the phone and ask you out.
Don’t play too hard to get. You don’t have to answer every phone call immediately, but do pick up your phone every once in a while–preferably when you aren’t
with another prospective suitor. Too many unreturned phone calls will make you come
across as aloof and disinterested. Your admirer will move on to someone new faster
than you can change your ring tone.

to be a creep. Be smart; only give out your digits if he makes it past the first date.
Do text smart. Texting can be your friend but it can also be your worst enemy. Keep
your phone on lock so if you are dating multiple people and you’re on a date this way
your texts/emails aren’t being read when you aren’t near your phone. If your Blackberry is near you and you need to keep your phone on, turn it over so no one can
read your incoming messages. Also, delete your in/sent messages as often as possible
so there is no e-trail to haunt you.
Do include a few pictures of your special someone on your MySpace or Facebook page. Just don’t dedicate a whole album to him, or include his pet names in the
captions (you want him to feel flattered, not embarrassed.) Also be careful who else
you feature on your page and what information is being broadcasted as it could get
you in trouble or sabotage a relationship.
Do detox from your ex-boyfriends. Delete their numbers from your phone. Also,
don’t respond to late night texts and phone calls from your exes. If it’s important, he
can call you during the day. A text conversation when he’s drunk or lonely will never
lead to anything good. He’s called an EX for a reason.
Don’t get overeager with your relationship status on Facebook or MySpace.
One casual date doesn’t mean you should declare yourself “in a relationship.” Wait
to make the cyber declaration until the two of you have defined your relationship in
person. If you try to define it too soon he may get creeped out and say peace out.
