St. Francis (NY) - Northeast Conference
St. Francis (NY)
NEC Predicted Finish: 7th
Terriers
2008-09 Record: 10-20, 7-11 NEC
St. Francis will sport the top returning three-point shooting duo in the conference this season. Sophomore Stefan
Perunicic, who established an NEC freshman record with
87 trifectas a year ago, joins junior guard Ricky Cadell,
who drilled 56 shots from beyond the arc. The combined
143 three-pointers is 21 more than any other league tandem.
Outlook
St. Francis (NY) seemed headed in the right direction early last season with
non-league wins over local rivals Manhattan and Columbia, a convincing road
triumph over eventual NEC champion Robert Morris and a narrow setback at
Big East opponent St. John’s. In an instant, however, a season filled with promise
took an abrupt turn over the holidays when stellar forward Kayode Ayeni went
down with a torn ACL. Ayeni’s absence left a gaping hole in the frontcourt, but a star
turn from sophomore guard Ricky Cadell kept the Terriers in the thick of the playoff
hunt. St. Francis eventually qualified for the NEC Tournament for the 17th time in the
last 19 years before bowing to top-seeded Robert Morris in the quarterfinals. With
Ayeni healthy and a slew of talented newcomers in the pipeline, a move up the conference
standings is well within reach for Brian Nash, who enters his fifth year at the helm of the
Brooklyn Heights program.
Kayode Ayeni
Ayeni was on the cusp of becoming one of the NEC’s top-flight players last season
when he went down with a season-ending knee injury in late December. In the nine
games prior to the injury, the wiry 6’5” forward posted five double-doubles, including a 19-point, 13-rebound effort against Seton Hall. He also established a pair of
career-bests with 21 points and 14 boards against Saint Francis (PA). Assuming
Ayeni can regain his form, he will once again pose problems for opposing defenders
based on his tremendous athleticism, inside-outside game and ability to step back
beyond the arc and drain the three-pointer.

Frontcourt
The 6’5” Ayeni was leading St. Francis with 13.3 ppg and 8.5 rpg when he went down last
season and had already accumulated five double-doubles in ten outings. With a sinewy frame
and explosive leaping ability, his return will give a boost to the Terriers’ transition game and
help shore up last season’s rebounding deficiencies. Ayeni is also a capable mid-range shooter
who also displayed a soft touch from outside the arc (14 3PFG, 38.9 3PFG%). Sophomore
forward Stefan Perunicic took the league by storm a year ago when he established an NEC
freshman record with 87 three-pointers and finished third on the team with 10.8 ppg. Perunicic’s
ability to stretch a defense with his unlimited range will help open up the middle for 6’7” senior
forwards Herman Wrice and Nigel Byam. Wrice (4.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg) made his presence felt on the
defensive end with 51 blocks and finished second in the conference with 1.7 bpg, while Byam
(5.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg) hit 50.8 percent of his shot attempts down on the block in 2008-09. Look for
increased minutes for 6’9” center Richard Clark, an outside scoring threat who displayed
promise as a freshman.
Backcourt
A 6’2” combo guard who is as adept scoring in traffic as he is draining shots from long range,
Cadell blossomed into one of the league’s premier guards last season when handed the keys
to the Terrier offense. Over the 20 games of the year following Ayeni’s injury, Cadell
averaged 17.7 ppg and 3.4 rpg, while shooting a robust 47.7 percent from the field, including
40.9 percent from outside the arc. On the year, he finished seventh in the conference in
scoring at 15.3 ppg, hit 56 three-pointers and drained 40.0 percent of his three-point
attempts. The loss of floor general and 1,000-point scorer Jamaal Womack will clear
more time for Justin Newton, who showed promise at the point with 55 assists in
limited action last season.

Nash snared a potential impact player up front with the signing of 6’9” shot
blocker Alexander Harrington out of Brown Mackie JC. Also expected to
earn minutes up front is 6’6” Brooklyn product Akeem Johnson, who averaged 25.3 ppg and 12.1 ppg at Susan S. McKinney High School. Nash also
landed a potential impact transfer in 6’11”, 255 lb. Mike Davis, who
played the last two seasons at Seton Hall. Davis, who will sit out
2009-10, started five games and averaged 2.6 ppg and 2.3 rpg for
Chicago, IL/Dyett Academy (Los Angeles City College)
the Pirates last season. Lacking bodies in the backcourt, 5’11”

Five Questions With: Kayode Ayeni
1. What was the toughest part about having to miss the last 20 games of the season with a knee injury? Was
it the physical rehabilitation or the mental stress from having to watch your teammates play without you
The toughest part about having to miss the last 20 games of the season was the mental stress. It was the first time in my
career that I have missed a substantial amount of time. A positive that came out of it was that I worked harder in rehab and
my vision of the court became clearer. I now apply what I saw sitting on the bench to make me a more dynamic player in my
final year here at St. Francis.
2. In your absence, Ricky Cadell stepped up and became an NEC all-star. Describe what its like playing with a
guard of his caliber.
Ricky is a fantastic ball player. When I played against him in high school, he was a scoring machine. When I was scoring, he wasn’t and when he was scoring, I wasn’t.
This year, now healthy, I feel like we are both at the levels where we need to be to make the team stronger and force the defense to play both of us more aggressively.
3. As a veteran player on a relatively young squad, give us your impressions of the incoming class. Which of the newcomers do you see making
immediate contributions?
The incoming class is an impressive group of players. I think Coach Nash and his staff did a wonderful job in adding key guys to help us make a run in the Northeast
Conference tournament and go further. These guys come in and give a 100% in every practice and have a great attitude on and off the court. I am really excited to
have a chance to play with them this season. I see Akeem Bennett making an immediate contribution to this team. Akeem and I played on the same AAU squad and I
know he is a hard worker and just comes to play, everyday. I also think that everyone is expected to make a contribution in his own way and be extremely
competitive.
4. What will surprise opponents the most about your game this season? Likewise, what will surprise opponents the most about your team this
season?
I think what will surprise the NEC is that I have slowed my game down significantly. The time I had to rehab and recover opened my eyes as a player and I have been
more methodical in my court vision and overall game. In the first couple of seasons, I had a more run and gun approach but now I have learned to slow the tempo
down and let the game come to me. What will surprise the NEC about the team, as a whole, is that we are going to play more physical defense. When I went down
with the injury, guys like Herman (Wrice) and Nigel (Byam) stepped in and were fantastic on both sides of the ball. With myself, and new guys like Alex Harrington,
Akeem Bennett and Akeem Johnson, there is so much talent on both sides of the ball that the opposition will take notice.
5. Which is the toughest NEC gym to play in and why?
Mount St. Mary’s. The fans there are really behind the team and the atmosphere is electric. It is always competitive when we make the trip to Emmitsburg.

St. Francis (NY)
The Terriers’ schedule has a New England tint to it this season with six games scheduled against teams from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. St.
Francis opens at home against Brown on November 13, then
travels to Boston College four days later. The Terriers play
later in the month at UMass, before taking on Hartford
(home) and Fairfield (away) in December, followed by their
final non-league outing of the season at Dartmouth on January 18.

Ricky Cadell
When St. Francis (NY)’s leading scorer and rebounder Kayode Ayeni went down last December with a season-ending
knee injury, the Terriers’ season seemed in peril. In Ayeni’s
absence, however, it was Cadell who seized the opportunity
to elevate his game and take center stage within the St. Francis offense. Beginning with the contest after Ayeni went down,
Cadell went on to average 17.7 ppg and 3.4 rpg, while shooting a robust 47.7 percent from the field, including 40.9 percent from outside the arc, over his final 20 outings of the year.
He tossed in a pair of 30 point games, including a career-best
33 against Sacred Heart on February 26th, and helped the
Terriers claim the final NEC playoff spot. On the year, he
finished seventh in the conference in scoring at 15.3 ppg.
