St. Francis (NY) - Northeast Conference
St. Francis (NY) NEC Predicted Finish: Tie-7th Terriers 2009-10 Record: 11-18, 8-10 NEC The NEC will feature just two schools with duos that combined to score at least 25.0 ppg last season. Topping the list is the St., Francis (NY) guard combination of Ricky Cadell and Akeem Bennett. Cadell was the league’s seventh leading scorer last season with 15.9 ppg, while Bennett ranked ninth with 14.5 ppg for a combined 30.4 ppg. Outlook What’s old is new again in Brooklyn Heights as Glenn Braica makes his return to the sidelines at St. Francis (NY), this time as head coach. The Brooklyn native was an assistant and top recruiter in the Terriers’ greatest on-court success of the modern era, a decade-long stretch that began in the mid-90s and included a pair of NEC title game appearances in 2001 and 2003. In his attempt to recapture that level of success and begin a new era in St. Francis hoops, he will lean heavily on the prolific senior backcourt tandem of Ricky Cadell and Akeem Bennett, each of whom has earned All-NEC recognition, and sharpshooting junior swingman Stefan Perunicic. Just two months into the job, Braica announced his first recruiting class - a five-player haul designed to jump-start an offense that averaged just 60.4 points per game a year ago Frontcourt Injuries wreaked havoc with the Terrier frontcourt last season, but things should be a bit more settled in 2010-11. While Kayode Ayeni’s athleticism and rebounding will be missed, Braica can count on Perunicic to keep defenses honest with his unlimited shooting range, and solid interior production from sophomore Akeem Johnson and junior Alexander Harrington. Though he struggled at times with his shot last season, the 6’5” Perunicic (8.4 ppg) still managed to sink 60 shots from three-point territory to raise his two-year total to 147. Johnson, a rugged 6’6” forward, came on strong the second half of the season when given the opportunity. The Brooklyn native averaged 7.9 points over the last 12 games of the year including four double-digit efforts - to lift his season average to 5.3 ppg. He also shot a teambest 56.9 percent from the floor. Harrington is back at full strength after missing the last 21 games of the 2009-10 season with an injury. The 6’9” center contributed 4.9 ppg and was strong on the boards with 4.3 rpg in 18 minutes per outing. Junior center Richard Clark has seen limited action in his two seasons, but has displayed a nice touch from the outside. Sophomore forward Milos Trivic brings additional depth after sitting out the 2009-10 campaign. Akeem Bennett Bennett earned second team All-NEC recognition a year ago in his first season after arriving from West Oklahoma State College. An outstanding all-around performer, Bennett was the only player in the NEC to finish in the top-10 in scoring (14.5 ppg, ninth), rebounding (6.4 rpg, tenth) , assists (4.0 apg, sixth) and steals (2.2, second) last season. In fact, Bennett joined former Robert Morris guard Tony Lee (2006-07) as the only two NEC players who have accomplished the rare feat since the turn of the millennium. The Long Island product also finished the 2009-10 campaign with five double-doubles, three of which came in the last four games of the season. Cadell has been the Terriers’ leading point-producer in each of the last two seasons and ranked seventh in the NEC in 2009-10 with 15.9 ppg. The 6’2” shooting guard can push the tempo and score in transition, but also excels in the halfcourt where his quick release and deep shooting ability resulted in 72 three-pointers last season, the fourth-most in the conference. Cadell, who is tied for the NEC’s active scoring lead with 1,158 career points, worked well in tandem with the 6’3” Bennett a year ago. A second team All-NEC pick in his first season in Brooklyn Heights, Bennett displayed the type of versatility from the guard position that sets him apart from his peers. A fearless improviser who is strong in the air and a tireless worker on the boards, Bennett was the only NEC player to rank in the top-10 in scoring (14.5 ppg), rebounding (6.4 rpg), assists (4.0 apg) and steals (2.2 spg). With no shortage of shooters surrounding him, Justin Newton was able to step in at the point last season without a hitch. A pesky defender, Newton finished fourth on the circuit with 1.9 spg, and was also eighth in assists (3.5 apg) and second in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.98:1). Hometown/High School/Previous College Belgrade, Serbia/Dimitrije Tucovic New York, NY/The Patterson School (NC) Newcomers Belgrade, Serbia/Srednja Turisticka Skola (sat out 2009-10) Braica’s inaugural recruiting class concentrated on the backcourt, which will need Brooklyn, NY/Poly Prep Country Day to be replenished after Bennett and Cadell exhaust their eligibility following Berkshire, England/Centroa de Ensenanzas this season. Junior Dre Calloway, a New York City native, ran the point at de Canarias (Canary Islands) Northeastern JC in Colorado last season, while 6’4” Brooklyn product Long Island, NY/West Hempstead (W. Oklahoma St. College) Travis Nichols is a former All-PSAL two-guard who starred at Gulf Coast Brooklyn, NY/Susan S. McKinney CC in 2009-10 and enters St. Francis as a sophomore. Braica also Lanham, MD/Duval (Brown Mackie JC) brought in 6’0” Canadian import Adam Chmielewski, who averaged 16.0 ppg and 8.0 apg as a senior at Champlain St. Lambert in Montreal. Iona transfer Ben Mockford will sit out this season, but Harlem, NY/Lincoln (CO) (Northeastern JC (CO)) should supply instant offense when he debuts in 2011-12. In Shoreham-by-Sea, England/Oak Hill Academy (VA) (Iona) 25 international appearances for the English national pro(will sit out 2010-11) gram, the 6’2” guard has averaged 15.0 ppg. The lone Montreal, Quebec/Champlain St. Lambert frontcourt newcomer is 6’8” Matt Milk, a strong Brooklyn, NY/Food & Finance rebounder who played his high school ball in Wantagh, NY/Upper Room Christian Wantagh, NY before finishing up his prep (Fort Lauderdale (FL) Pine Crest) career at Fort Lauderdale (FL) Pine Crest. 56 10 • NEC men’ etball guide • 11 men’ss bask basketball Glenn Braica Alma Mater: Queens College ‘89 Record at SFNY: First Year Overall Record: First Year From 2001-03, Braica was the head coach for the Empire State Games New York City men’s open team, which won gold medals in 2001 and 2002, as well as a silver medal in 2003.
