WITH A LOT OF HELP FROM MY FRIENDS!
I
f the essence of “classical” transcends time, then there is no risk describing the music
of The Beatles as “classical.” If their music, having survived the test of time, is worth
dedicating to an entire symphony concert, then they certainly should share the same
special place with other musical geniuses such as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven.
Fact: no other “band” in the history of music has made a bigger impact than The Beatles,
as exceptionally evident tonight, 50 years after their first arrival in Miami. And although a
handful of “academics” may believe that this evening’s “classical” performance is no more
than just a Pops Concert, we know better.
When Miami Symphony’s Chairman, Rafael Diaz-Balart, suggested that we consider
dedicating an entire concert to the music of The Beatles, I was delighted. In 2011, we had
begun our Beatlemania mode with the premiere of a great new work by MISO ComposerIn-Residence, Sam Hyken, The Beatles’ Guide to the Orchestra.
Since 2006, the beginning of my tenure as Miami Symphony’s Music Director, I have
been working on a new score inspired by my beloved Miami audience in gratitude for
their patronage and generosity, and based on the famous tune by John Lennon and Paul
McCartney, With a Little Help from my Friends. This is the perfect time for the final
touches to my VARIATIONS as well as to complete the repertoire with a kaleidoscopic view
of various musical styles from the Baroque to the present, and in a program including five
world premieres featuring five soloists.
In the spirit of the Beatles, it is serendipitous that we introduce a partner with the same
vision, the World Music Group. Please join me in welcoming them as our major sponsor
of this unique evening along with the launch of their recently created, Make your Own
Peace Foundation.
So many friends, patrons, sponsors, designers, technicians, and promoters have provided
more than a “little” help in the equation, all making this a memorable event in the music
history of Miami. Our deepest gratitude goes out to them and to you, for your neverending support.
Warmest wishes,

Ruben Studdard
Unconditional Love
I
n the 10 years since he brightened the world of
pop music with his American Idol-winning romantic
balladry, Ruben Studdard has warmed the hearts of
his huge fan base with five albums and has toured
with the varied likes of Peabo Bryson, Melissa
Manchester, CeCe Winans and David Foster. But with
his new album Unconditional Love, which was helmed
by Foster in his role as chairman of Studdard’s new
label Verve Records, he has delivered the recording
that he himself states is “the record I should have made after I won American Idol.”
“It’s my most romantic album yet—and most mature,” says Studdard. “It shows my growth as a
vocalist, and is also the most heartfelt album I’ve ever recorded and includes many of my favorite
songs from all different eras.”
Indeed, Unconditional Love brings together timeless classics and new compositions sure to qualify,
including “Meant To Be,” the first single, which Studdard introduced on the finale of The Biggest
Loser, and co-wrote with Foster. “It’s an inspirational song that we wrote while I was on the show,
and it has a lot of meaning in my life,” says Studdard, a popular celebrity contestant on last year’s
edition of the weight-loss challenge. “It has to do with moving toward the place where you’re meant
to be—which really applies to this album: This is the record that everybody has been waiting for
from me.”
It all started with an astute observation from Foster, whom Studdard met seven years ago at
Muhammad Ali’s Celebrity Fight Night event, then accompanied on various “Foster & Friends” tours.
“He said that whenever he saw me perform a romantic ballad in concert, there was a standing
ovation, and wondered why I hadn’t done an album like that. So that’s what we tried to do here.”
Besides a voice that has earned Studdard the nickname “the Velvet Teddy Bear” (from Gladys
Knight, no less), Unconditional Love is marked by a song selection, chosen jointly by Studdard,
Foster and Foster’s sister and fellow producer Jaymes Foster, to play to Studdard’s strengths as a
romantic balladeer.
For starters, there’s The Carpenters’ Burt Bacharach-Hal David masterwork “They Long To Be
(Close To You),” graced on Unconditional Love by Stevie Wonder’s harmonica. Then there’s Paul
McCartney’s unforgettable “My Love,” one of several album tracks produced by John Jackson,
who’s worked with Studdard throughout his career. “I’m always looking at old videos, and ran across
Paul McCartney and Wings singing ‘My Love’ and fell in love with the words,” explains Studdard.
Lalah Hathaway joins him on “If This World Were Mine,” originally the Marvin Gaye-written duet for
Gaye and Tammi Terrell, and famously covered by Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn. “It’s one of my
momma’s favorite Luther Vandross songs, and she’d play it over and over again,” says Studdard.
“But it’s another opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the people I admire, like Marvin and Tammi—
and of course Luther.”
Luther Vandross, then, has special significance for Studdard.
“From the beginning of my career, people have said, ‘Why don’t you make an album featuring the
Luther Vandross sound?’ But I was so young, and it’s hard for anybody to tell you at 23 years old
that you’re the next Luther Vandross—even though I’m probably his biggest fan! But the older I get,
the more honest and transparent I am about the way I feel about things—and I’ve never felt this
strongly about anything I’ve done in my career.”
Studdard is now set to tour in support of Unconditional Love, and is bringing Lalah Hathaway along
as his opening act. “I’m really looking forward to reconnecting with the core audience that’s stuck
with me from the beginning,” he concludes, adding, “It’s been a wonderful journey so far.”

Juan Pablo Galavis
T
he second of three siblings, Galavis was born in Ithaca, New York, to Venezuelan parents
and moved with his family to Barquisimeto, Venezuela, when he was 2 years old. He
returned to the United States to play college soccer for Roberts Wesleyan College, where as
of 2006 he was tied with two others for the team’s third-highest number of assists (25). After
several seasons playing in the Primera División Venezolana with Dep. Italchacao, Monagas SC,
Aragua FC, and Guaros de Lara, he joined Miami FC in February 2008.
He left soccer after his 2008 season and began his career in the music business with
promotional work in the Miami bar and club scene. Around this time he also began working
with Venezuelan musician/songwriter Frank Santofimio and Mario Donoso. They began
promoting the Venezuelan duo, Chino y Nacho.
Galavis then began filming television commercials and had a short stint working as a television
presenter for a Miami-based sports show, Mega TV’s Mega News.
Galavis appeared as a contestant on the ABC reality-television dating competition The
Bachelorette in May 2013, but was eliminated midway during the season. On August 5, 2013,
ABC announced he would star in season 18 of The Bachelor, premiered in January 2014. As
a Latino, he was the first person from an ethnic minority to be chosen as bachelor after 17
previous editions.
Fernando Duprat
F
ernando Duprat is an entrepreneur,
business leader, and lifelong supporter of
the arts. He is Director of Nexus+Digiprint, a
marketing activation and event production
company operating in five countries, and
has served as Executive Producer of The
Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO) since
2010. Duprat served as Technical Director for
the premiere performance of Jesus Christ
Superstar in Caracas, Venezuela, when he was
only 19 years old. Afterwards, he attended New
York University, where he studied film and
television before returning to Caracas to found
Nexus, a television commercial production
company. Nexus soon earned a reputation for
successfully undertaking the most technically
demanding projects, and attracted a cadre of
young designers helping the company become
a leader in the advertising production market.
With the arrival of Carlos Martel as a partner,
Nexus expanded operations to live events and
quickly attained the same level of success that
it had attained as a television production house. Duprat then capitalized on the national success
of Nexus to establish an international presence, starting with offices in Miami. This operation
later merged with Digiprint, a large-scale digital printing business founded by Guillermo Torres, to
form Nexus+Digiprint. Today there are Nexus offices and production facilities in Mexico, Panama,
Venezuela, and Argentina.
A passionate music lover, Duprat serves as Special Advisor to EXIB Musica, an international
music market based in Bilbao, Spain, and has lent his support to numerous musicians over the
years. Duprat’s relationship with the Miami Symphony and his friendship with conductor Eduardo
Marturet date back to 1994.
Recently Duprat served as Producer for the Orchestra’s first-ever gala at the Crystal Palace in
Miami, where he impressed the audience with his charismatic performance on the triangle. He was
also the Creative Director of the sold-out Tribute to Simón Díaz concert at the Olympia Theater
in Miami, in honor of the universally-acclaimed author of Caballo Viejo and many other classics of
Latin American music.
Over the years, Duprat has introduced a number of technical innovations complementing the
music and enhancing the public’s concert-going experience, thus helping to keep every MISO event
fresh and exciting, and helping further The Miami Symphony Orchestra’s mission of bringing the
best international music to Miami.

Ciro Fodere
A
s the First Prize winner of the XIV Bartok-Kabalevsky-Prokofieff International Competition,
Ciro Fodere is a pianist with a variety of musical interests. His latest performances have
been described as “masterful, electric, by turns fiery and lyrical” by The Post and Courier, and as
“technical sheen articulation, alert dynamic shading, and an imaginative approach” by The Miami
Herald, which also raves “edge-of-the-seat thrilling.”
Besides soloing with both major orchestras in Uruguay, and making his debut at age 14 with the
Philharmonic of Montevideo, Fodere has been a soloist three times with the Charleston Symphony
Orchestra under the direction of Ignat Solzhenitsyn and David Stahl. Other orchestras include the
Philharmonic of Extremadura and the New World Symphony, where his most recent performance
of Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, under the direction of Alasdair Neale, was
acclaimed by the audience and major newspapers in Miami. He has performed Rachmaninov’s
Third Concerto with the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic, Mozart’s Concerto No. 13 in Sendai, Japan,
and the Gershwin Piano Concerto with the Charleston Symphony.
His competition successes consist of receiving First Prize twice at the Pennsylvania State and
the Eastern Division Music Teacher’s Competition. He was First Laureates at the Southeastern
Competition in the U.S., the Association of the Student’s of Music, and Jeunesses Musicales in
Uruguay. He has also won the Concerto Competitions at Carnegie Mellon University and at New
World Symphony, and received the Liberace Foundation for the Performing and Creative Arts Award.
An avid chamber musician, Fodere has performed at the Londrina Music Festival, International
Piano Series, and the Trujillo Music Festival. As an enthusiast of the Pittsburgh Concert Society,
where he won the PNC Bank Prize, Fodere’s performances were broadcasted on the South Carolina
and Pennsylvania Public Radio and television stations. Appearing in many cultural radio and
television shows in Uruguay and Argentina, he delivered a live television performance at the Jose
Iturbi International Piano Competition in Spain.
Mr. Fodere is currently the piano professor at the New World School of the Arts, and a member of
the SOBE Chamber Ensemble. He received a full scholarship at the College of Charleston for his
undergraduate degree, and a full assistantship at Carnegie Mellon University for his Master and
Artist Diplomas, where he studied with Enrique Graf and Earl Wild. He completed his four-year
fellowship at the New World Symphony, an organization that featured him regularly in chamber
music and orchestral performances in Miami. He has also participated with members of the
New World Symphony in Santa Cecilia, Rome, Perugia and Carnegie Hall in New York, and has
accompanied world-renowned musicians like Joshua Bell and Renée Fleming.

For tonight’s concert
, designer Lisu Vega has collaborated with Athina
Klioumi de Marturet, wife of Maestro Eduardo Marturet, and Lissette Rondon, President
of MiamiFashionSpotlight.net, to launch an exclusive collection called “Gratitude,” a special
tribute to The Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO) and the spirit of their music. The designer
was inspired by the color and music of an era where The Beatles and other musical groups
became the role model for a musical revolution. As Vega puts it, “...music is life, music
changes everything.”
The exquisite gown adorned by Athina at the recent MISO gala concert at the Trump
National Doral, was inspired in an original and classy way by this very same score of Maestro
Marturet. “Their relationship as a couple, so full of love, always so close... a life full of music
and art, it just struck me, made my heart vibrate with those elements. I started to immediately
work on my first designs,” explained Vega.
Three creative minds have come together to give their best at creating art, motivated by
the previous generation, and adapted to ours. With this incredible music you are about to
hear tonight, including original compositions from the Miami-based Maestro, a portion of the
proceeds from this collection will benefit the Miami Symphony.
Vega has designed a five-piece collection with effortless elegance, and an urban knack for
creating edgy street wear with a luxurious finish. Nice colors, wonderful concept and trés
chic. This limited-edition collection will be available for this Fall/Winter, and will be sold
exclusively online at www.miamifashionspotlight.net.
The collection of pieces are already available for pre-order now at www.facebook.com/Miamifashionspotlight.
“Gratitude” collection by Lisu and Athina will hit selected Miami stores
this upcoming Spring, 2015.
