BMW vs Mini Cooper Road Rally
September 13, 2008
How often in life do you get the chance to defend your title as champion? Once you
graduate from high school or college, probably not very often.
On Saturday, September 13th, The BMW Store hosted their annual BMW vs Mini Cooper
road rally and invited customers and would be customers to participate in a challenging but fun
road rally event to see who would take home the 2008 title as the King Road Warrior! A
beautiful warm summer day greeted the participants as they worked their way through the road
course in Hamilton, Clermont, Brown and Warren Counties. Sites along the way included 2
Covered Bridges, 2 historic churches and 80
miles of scenic roads with little or no traffic
welcomed the teams from as far ways as
Louisville, Kentucky.
The Mini Cooper camp had the advantage
with 10 Minis compared to only 7 BMWs and in
the end that small advantage may have been
the leading factor to push the Minis onto to
their
2nd
victory
in
as
many
years!
Congratulations to David & Laura Bales who
drove a 2006 Mini Cooper S Convertible to that
1st Place finish! Will the Minis take home
another victory in 2009 or will the BMW group
rise to the occasion? Stay tuned.
We would like to thank Rich Winterman and Jenna Bellinski of the BMW Store for putting
this all together! Without their help and backing, this event would obviously never have taken
place. For pictures from the event, click here.

Indiana State Park Inns Road Rally
Fall Edition
September 21–23, 2008
Indiana is one of several states fortunate enough to still have plenty of interesting and
historical sites tucked away on the back roads far from development and urban sprawl. This 2
day route, although somewhat long, took the teams to areas that were at best desolate and at
times down right deserted!
Working our way along some very rural back roads the teams were treated to 5 beautiful
Covered Bridges and 19 historic Steel Truss Bridges! When we weren’t crossing streams we
were watching trains cross the 3rd longest railroad trestle in the world, visiting a secluded rock
spring, touring a manufacturing facility and standing in awe next to the limb of what was once
the largest tree east of the Mississippi.
A very wide variety of vehicles were
driven in the road rally including a 1938
Chrysler Imperial driven by Bill & Betty
Swope,
a
1961
Rambler American
Convertible driven by Jeff & Nancy
Mosburg and a 1978 VW Super Beetle
Convertible driven by Kemal & Dianne

After 200 miles of touring the back

Deer Creeks Autumn Road Rally
September 27, 2008
When you think of central Ohio, you probably wouldn’t consider the area for a scenic travel
destination for the family vacation. Or would you? We say it over and over again...pick any
spot in the country, draw a 25 mile radius around the center point and you will be amazed at
what we can find when it comes to scenic drives, historic sites or strange little places in the
middle of nowhere.
Pickaway County, Ohio is just one those interesting counties with more places to visit than
we can pack into one road rally. Beginning and ending at the beautiful Deer Creek Resort and
Conference Center, this rally ran through miles of country roads lined with corn fields,
occasionally making stops in one horse towns for fuel, supplies or that interesting visit to the
town museum. This road tour included 5 Steel Truss Bridges dating back to 1885, two
museum stops complete with original Stage
Coaches and Ohio’s oldest traffic light, an
original train depot and a drive past a kettle
lake that was formed when the glaciers
receded 17,000 years ago!
Congratulations to Laura Tucker & Linda

checkered flag! Nice job girls! For pictures

Feed the Wolves Road Tour & Fundraiser
October 4, 2008
About 5 years ago on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, Bev & I were driving along the
Indiana back roads (If you can imagine that.) when we came upon a large fenced enclosure.
Taking a quick glance I immediately saw what appeared to be several wolves in the enclosure.
Looking back again in disbelief I zeroed in on a regal dark wolf with golden eyes. The car
came to a screeching halt. Everyone knows that I like turtles, but the wolf is a very special
animal to me. Bev & I decided to pull into the driveway to see what this wolf thing was all
about.
That was the day we met Terry & Kathy Baudendistel, owners and caretakers of the Wolf
Creek Habitat and Rescue Center. Every once in a great while, you will meet someone so
very special in their conviction that you can see their purpose in life comes straight from the
soul. Terry & Kathy have such a strong sense of caring and compassion for wolves, that it
shows in everything they do and say for these animals. Their lives are wrapped around these
fantastic animals and dedicated to educating everyone about the true nature of the wolf pack.
Over the years we have taken several road rallies to their sanctuary and this year we
decided to have a fundraiser for the wolves. 13 teams participated in the event which raised
$750.00 to purchase food for the wolves
during the upcoming winter season. We
would
like
to
thank
everyone
who
participated and donated to this great cause.
We will be having the Feed The Wolves
Road Tour and Fundraiser again on October
3, 2009 and invite everyone to participate in
this event. Not only are you giving to a
great cause that uses 100% of the
donations to purchase food, you also are
permitted to enter the pens with the wolves
and physically interact with these beautiful
creatures. Below are a few pictures from the
fundraiser. To view all pictures from the

The Rising Sun Navy Bean Festival Road Rally
October 11, 2008
On the banks of the Ohio River just about 35 miles west of Cincinnati, Ohio, sits a gem of
a town located in the smallest County in the State of Indiana, Rising Sun. Back in 1987,
Rising Sun started an annual fall event called the Navy Bean Festival where the theme of the
day is, you guessed it, the Navy Bean! I’m not really sure who decided to have this type of a
festival or why, but it sure is a gas. People from throughout the county come in for the
weekend to sample local foods, listen to the bands play along the river and of course, to try
out the festival rides that pack the downtown streets.
The Navy Bean Festival Road Rally course is located almost totally in Ohio County which
is only 87 square miles and as stated before, the smallest county in the State. Even with it’s
notoriety as being the smallest County it really is amazing what you can find here. The county
plays host to the only Tripple Whipple Bridge in the world, which is currently being restored;
also the historically significant Speakman House and the Fischer-Barrklow Home both built by
Timothy Newman and reported to have been used by the Underground Railroad are located in
the county as well as the Lost Bridge which
was built in 1916.
We would like to thank Sherry Timms of
the Rising Sun Tourism Bureau for putting
everything together for the event including
the great prizes handed out to the top
winning teams. Congratulations to Steven &
Sandy Miller who took 1st Place in the
Rising Sun Navy Bean Festival Road Rally
with their 2006 Suabru Outback! Steve &
Sandy have competed in several of our road

The Midwest All British Car Road Rally
October 11, 2008
Some cars are built for basic reliable transportation to take you to and from work everyday.
Some cars are built as a status symbol as a way to make your neighbors jealous. Some cars
are built for fuel economy and some cars (British) are just built because their owners like to
have fun when they drive!
When you think of a sports car, the legendary Jaguars & Triumphs automatically go to the
top of the list. Visions of Brits with Tweed caps buzzing around the English countryside with
tires squealing as they make their way down narrow lanes jump into your brain. I’ve always
been a big fan of the sleek Jaguar X-Type. The only other car that came close to duplicating
this beauty was the 1963-1967 Chevrolet Corvette, but that’s a different story.
This British Car Road Rally was sponsored by the Jaguar Club of Greater Cincinnati and
open to all British made vehicles. Beginning and ending at Brookville Lake, the teams enjoyed
a full day of driving in the country with stops at the Wolf Creek Habitat & Rescue Center, the
Little Cedar Grove Baptist Church built in 1812, Oldenburg, Indiana, a stop along the
Whitewater Canal plus other interesting and
historical sites. For October 11th, the day
was downright on the warm side with plenty
of sunshine for the convertible owners.
Special thanks to Rich Frantz and the
Jaguar Club of Greater Cincinnati for
organizing the event. Congratulations to Alan
& Susan Ray who drove their 1967
Sunbeam Tiger to a 1st Place finish. Alan &
Susan were the only Road Rally participants

The Bridges, Brooks & Mansions Road Rally
October 18, 2008
Try to imagine an autumn drive in the country where you have a road course all mapped
out for the entire day. All you have to do is follow the directions and enjoy the afternoon!
Before you even leave town, you visit a one-of-a-kind vehicle known as “Peggy the Flying
Horse” that participated in parades throughout the country but was built and is housed just a
few miles from where you live! This is a 1930’s truck chassis retrofitted with a roadster body
placed strategically near the back of the vehicle so that every time the vehicle moves forward
from a dead stop, it pops a wheelie! Also located in town, you cross a Steel Through Truss
Bridge that was built in 1887 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Next, you take a personal tour of two beautiful mansions. One which began life in 1810 as
a two story log home that eventually, through a series of additions, became the Veraestau
Estate overlooking the Ohio River. The other mansion, Hillforest which was built in 1855, is as
grand as it is unique. Three stories and somewhat resembling a riverboat the Hillforest is the
grand jewel of the county.
After visiting the two mansions, you leave town and head into the country where you’ll visit
a Victorian Public Cemetery established in 1869 that also includes two prehistoric Indian
Mounds. Further along the course you will cross another Steel Through Truss Bridge built in
1920 that was originally used for the railroads. Just a couple of miles down the road you’ll
stop at a local family apple orchard for a cool drink of fresh, crisp apple cider. Before you
head back home you have one more stop,
a Covered Bridge built in 1879! You have
just completed a partial tour of Dearborn
County Indiana!
We would like to thank Debbie Smith of
the Dearborn County Tourism Bureau for
organizing the event and for all of her great
help with the logistics and details involved
for the drive. Congratulations to Gary &
Jean Ann Martin and Rodney & Dana
Brewer who took 1st Place in the Bridges,

Land Rover Cincinnati Covered Bridge
Road Rally
October 19, 2008
With the first Land Rover designed in 1948 as a vehicle to be used in the military and on
the farm, to the high performance, luxury SUV 2009 Range Rover Sport, one thing is for
certain. These vehicles are very capable on and off road. However, this road rally sponsored
by Land Rover Cincinnati was designed more as a leisurely drive than a test of strength and
agility that is legendary in Land Rover circles.
On a very crisp, early October morning, customers of Land Rover Cincinnati assembled at
the dealership for a drive in the country with their families and their pride and joy...the Rover.
This 80 mile jaunt took the teams into the countryside and through two Covered Bridges
located in Clermont and Brown Counties. They were also treated to 2 historically significant
churches rarely known to even the locals
and a visit to an old Steel Through Truss
Bridge built in 1904 but now bypassed for a
more modern span across the stream.
We would like to thank Katy Goetzel of
Land Rover Cincinnati for organizing the
event and doing such a great job with
notifying her customers of the Road Rally.

The Haunted
Tunnel Road
Rally
October 24,
2008
A little bit of heavy rain on Friday morning wasn’t going to stop a large crowd of Halloween
enthusiasts from making the drive to the forbidden Haunted Tunnel! This group was ready to
getup and go see the sites of south central Indiana which included round barns, covered
bridges, brick kilns, steel truss bridges, fire towers haunted inns, foot bridges and of course the
Haunted Tunnel.
The morning started out with a dark cold steady rain as the teams started their journey
into the hinterland. I emphasize the word dark because when I left the parking lot that
morning I really didn’t have a clue what type of vehicles were being driven in this road rally.
As I setup a position along the route to take pictures of the teams as they rolled by, I
mistakenly took a picture of someone in a Silver Dodge pickup that wasn’t in our group. Not
thinking twice about the mistake, I stayed at my post taking pictures. About 10 minutes later a
Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy pulled up next to my vehicle stating he received a report that
I was taking pictures of people and he wanted to know what was going on. After a brief
explanation of our Road Rally event and running a background check on my drivers license,
we both had a good laugh and went about our business.
By noon the rain had subsided with only heavy grey clouds lurking in the heavens which
made for a rather spooky type atmosphere when the teams arrived at the Haunted Tunnel.
Unfortunately, this year no one was treated
to a ghost siting at the tunnel. However, we
will be going back to the Haunted Tunnel
to search for ghosts not once but twice in
2009! We will be having 2 Haunted Tunnel
Road Rallies next year, one on Saturday,
October 24th and one on Sunday, October
25th. In addition to being held twice and on
the weekend, the route will be about 50
miles shorter and we will have a different
start/finish location than in the past. With all
of these improvements, this should make
the Haunted Tunnel Road Rally event much
more accessible and enjoyable to everyone
in the tri-state area. For details on the new
Haunted Tunnel Road Rallies, click here.
We would like to thank everyone who came out for our annual Haunted Tunnel Road Rally
and hope you can make it back again for next years events. Congratulations to Mark & Julie
Stutler who took 1st Place in the Haunted Tunnel Road Rally! Good work Mark & Julie! To
