Dux Honour Board
Jeff Muller, of Lowan Signs and Daryl
Leyonhjelm have constructed and erected
a new Dux Honour Board at the school,
dating back to 1943. Jeff has done a lot
of research at the Nhill Historical Society,
on behalf of Nhill College, to fill in the
many blanks we had over the years. At
this stage we only have the one year
which remains blank, that being 1971. If
anyone can provide information about the
identity of the Dux that year it would be
very much appreciated. This project has
been several years in the making so it is
exciting to see the finished product
proudly displayed in our foyer – feel free
to come in and have a look.

with the first session scheduled for Friday
7th October from 9.00am – 10.00am.
A more detailed list of dates for next term
has been included later in this newsletter.
On a related theme, Musical Tots will
conduct their second session for the term
in the Music Shed on Thursday 8th
September from 12.30pm – 1.30pm. Any
parents interested in this program are
asked to register their attendance at the

Science week
This week we have celebrated science
week across the school. There have been
a variety of activities and experiments,
with a number of junior classes getting
involved with senior classes. One of the
highlights for the week was Daniel Colbert
visiting the school to demonstrate the
flying of his drone and speaking to the
students of his real-life application of such
technology. Thank you to Daniel for his
visit and all of the staff who organised
extra special activities for the students
this week.

First Aid
Students from Foundation to Year 6
attended a session on First Aid presented
by Matt from St John Ambulance.
Children learnt about how to recognise
and respond to emergency situations,
including how to contact emergency
services and basic first aid procedures.
Sessions were tailored to suit the different
ages of students, with the senior students
learning about delivering CPR. Whilst it is
hoped they will never have to use these
skills, it is reassuring that they know
them. All students were given a special
homework task to complete and older
children are encouraged to get their
parents
to
visit
the
website
www.stjohnvic.com.au/quiz to see how
much they know about first aid. More
information about the program can be
found at www.stjohnvic.com.au/schools.
Fifteen Word Stories
It was encouraging to see a large number
of students willingly take up the challenge
to write a 15 word (or less) story as part
of our “Australia, Story Country” themed
Book Week celebrations. The task was a
difficult one but there were many fabulous
entries with prizes being awarded at
assembly to the following students: Lucy
Dodds, Addison Mason, Nina Sanders, Dah
Bu Shwe Pay, Elizabeth Van Der Linden,
Rian Villare, Trinity Cannell, Brayden
Purchase, Kiara Jones, Maddison Argall
and Mitchell Taylor. Honourable Mentions
certificates also acknowledged the great
entries from Ashlie Cannell, Andrew Klee,
Tori Menzel, Bailee White, Arli Lowe, Alan
Van Der Linden and Shae Pilmore.
Congratulations to all of these students as
well as all participants in this story writing
task.

the menu for the hungry visitors. The
children entertained their special guests
by singing a Father’s Day song, playing
some funny games together as well as
acting out some “dad jokes”.
If the
laughs were anything to go by, a fun time
was had by all.
Thanks to all of the
fathers who rearranged their work lunch
times to come along and we wish you all a
wonderful day on Sunday. May you get
some of the presents you and your child
drew on the day, but may the wrapping be
much more successful!

Science Week
Drones, Droids & Robots – that was the
theme of Science Week 2016. Students
from F-11 participated in a range of
activities which saw most secondary
classes plan and conduct lessons with a
primary class. This required our senior
students to teach their younger peers
about many Science related concepts.
Some activities included making robotic
hands & brushes, cardboard cars, balloon
hovercrafts, smoke bombs, gold rain,
snake foam and designing robots. This
year, we also had a special presentation
by Mr Daniel Colbert who demonstrated
the use of drones in the Agriculture
Industry. This week would not be possible
without our dedicated Science team,
particularly Ms Sunil for co-ordinating the
week and Ms Case-Hassall for her
continuous support and preparation of
every experiment. Thank you to Mr
Colbert for giving up his time and
expertise to inspire our students. We also
thank the secondary students who
planned activities, the primary teachers
for their co-operation and of course our
primary students for their excellent
behaviour and enthusiasm. Well done to
all involved!

Mobile
The VCAL Foundation class has now
completed the Mobile Muster project.
The mobile muster is about re-using
phones, recycling and melting them down
to use for other things like park benches,
plastic fence posts and stainless steel.
The group did the project for around a
month.
We placed our mobile muster box at the
front office and made posters to put
around the school.
All up we collected about 3kgs of old
phones and chargers. We thank those
people who supported our project.

HOSPITALITY
NEWS

August 2016
The VET Hospitality students held their
Certificate II in Kitchen Operations
Showcase Evening Dinner on Wednesday
the 24th of August. The VET Hospitality
students invited their families, friends and
teachers to enjoy a set menu where the
Respect

meals were selected, planned, prepared,
cooked, practiced and served by the
students.
The students and invited guests believed
the evening meal was a huge success. The
showcase
highlighted
the
student’s
individual skills and demonstrated to their
guests and teachers an understanding of
how far the students have come this year
and how their skills have progressed in
developing hospitality industry standards.
The planning for this evening began 3-4
weeks ago where a three course menu
had to be chosen that would include
ingredients that belong in the following
categories; Appetisers, Salads, Fruit,
Vegetables, Eggs and Farinaceous.
On the day of the event, the students
began preparing all the dishes for the
menu and it went very smoothly. Of
course there were a few hiccups along the
way, a component of one of the desserts
didn’t work the first time around so later it
had to be remade. The risotto dish took a
lot more teamwork than the students
thought to ensure the rice didn’t burn and
stick. Closer to the service time, the
students were a little pushed for time, but
this is where they all showcased their
skills and worked together very well as a
team; teamwork is what made this
evening a huge success.
A huge thank you to all the guests who
attended and to the students who made it
work so well. All students should be very
proud of their efforts and to Mrs O’Connor
for providing the skills, knowledge and
guidance to ensure the evening dinner be
possible.

Lunchtime sessions
Recently students have been provided
with a number of opportunities to attend a
variety of lunchtime presentations. Year
12 students attended a RoadSafe session
on “Looking After Your Mates” a couple of
weeks ago which gave some important,
and
timely,
messages
on
being
responsible road users and also looking
after each other. This week a small group
of students joined former Year 12 student
Lucy Marra to hear her experiences in
taking a gap year. Lucy gave some
insights into what she has done since
leaving Nhill College, and also some great
tips for Year 12 students at this time of
the year. Thank you Lucy for giving up
your time to come and share your
experiences with the group. We wish you
well in your future endeavours.
Also this week, Year 10 students who are
interested in entering the VCAL program
next year attended an information session
and received their application forms. This
was a compulsory meeting and anyone
who did not attend should see Mrs. Cole,
VCAL Coordinator, ASAP. Year 12 students
intending on applying for tertiary courses
attended a session with Ms. Fuqua guiding
them through the registration and
application process online.
Next week is a busy week! On Monday
5th September, representatives from the
WWHS will talk about the gap year
positions currently being advertised at
the organisation. This will take place in
Room 19 at lunchtime. Any students,
mainly from Year 11 or 12, who are

considering taking a gap year are strongly
urged to attend this session. On Tuesday
6th September, the LLEN will give a
presentation of a new online service they
have developed for students seeking
Structured
Workplace
Learning
placements. This will be held in H1 at
lunchtime and is open to any interested
students,
parents
and
staff.
On
Wednesday 7th September, Rebecca
Dart will speak to any students aged 1619 years who might be interested in the
Rural Ambassador competition at the
Nhill Show. Come along and find out
what’s involved.
I encourage students to make the most of
these opportunities that are being
presented for their benefit.

Pathways Update
Term 3 is an exciting and busy time for
student pathways- Year 12 students are
beginning
to
choose
their
course
preferences for further studies and the
Year 10 & 11 students are selecting their
subjects to study at Nhill College over the
next few years. With so much happening,
here are some reminders of some of the
opportunities
available
to
students/
families.
 Federation University (Ballarat) are
offering $100 Coles vouchers to help
families offset the costs of traveling to
their Open Day on the 30th of August.
If you would like to take up this offer,
register online then see Miss Fuqua for
the voucher.
 Many universities are offering various
types of subsidies to attend Open
Days- please see Miss Fuqua for more
information on the Open Days you plan
on attending.
 If you are having trouble deciding on
your subjects for next year, remember
to use the resources in the Careers
Room and in the Senior Pathways
section of the Skoolbag App/website.
The “Career Planning Links” document
Endeavour

and the “MyCareer Match” services are
particularly useful.
VTAC has created a new service for
Year 10 & 11 students to help them
plan their VCE course and to search
through prerequisites. This resource

Unit 3/4 Practice Exams
Week 1 of Term 3 Holidays
Nhill College will be conducting Unit 3/4
Practice Exams during the first week of
holidays. By holding the practice exams in
the first week of holidays, students will be
better equipped to revise, teachers will
have more time to mark the exams then
tailor their revision plans and it creates
less disruption to class time. A series of
supervised exam condition blocks will be
offered,
allowing
students
greater
flexibility as to when they come in to sit
their practice exams. While this won’t be
compulsory, it is recommended that Unit
3/4 students make every effort to
undertake practice exams. Students can,
and should, still take additional exam
papers home to practice. During the
Holiday Practice Exams, Nhill College will
also be hosting a session of the Flinders
uniTEST.
Students who are interested in attending
Flinders University can sit this exam as a
way to help them gain an edge in earning
an offer in most courses. The results of
this uniTEST are considered along with a
student’s ATAR; however, if a student
does poorly it is not counted against
them. This is a free activity that can only
help students reach their goals.
More
information about the uniTEST can be
found
at:

The exact time and date of this session
