Dear Parents and Community Members
Three-Way Interviews
As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter interviews are fast
approaching, with all families being sent forms last week.
Please check your child’s bag if you have not yet received
3-way Interviews
them or contact the office for another set if required. Threeway interviews are a very important part of Karoonda Area

School's reporting process. As a staff we strongly believe in
along ☺
the three-way interview process as it opens up
communication between students and parents, parents and
teachers; and teachers and students. The opportunity to
listen to your child explain their learning, sends a powerful message to your child that you
are interested in their schooling. Another reason for attending three-way interviews is
that it demonstrates to your child that you value what they are learning and the school as
a whole, this then embeds in the minds of the students the value of education.
One of our key targets in the school’s Site Improvement Plan is: “we will achieve at least
60% family involvement in the interview process”. We can only achieve this target
with the support of parents. Our reasons for creating this target are for the reasons above
but also because we want to improve the communication between school and home. This
is the first formal opportunity to provide feedback to parents on student progress but
parents and teachers do not have to wait until scheduled interview times to discuss
student progress, if you have a concern or are interested in having a discussion regarding
your child’s progress contact your child’s teacher to make an appointment.
I strongly encourage ALL parents to attend three-way interviews in Week 10 of this term.
If you are unable to attend on the specified night please contact your child’s teacher to
make a time that suits you and the teacher.

Mini-Golf Course
Over the past twelve months I have been involved in
a fantastic student lead project as part of last year’s
Pastoral Care Groups. The challenge given to the
students was to develop an idea which could be used
at the Karoonda Farm Fair to provide teenagers with
some fun activities. We had some really weird and
wonderful ideas, including giant bouncy castles to
water slides but the one that stood out was the idea
of building a mini-golf course. For a while we mulled over the idea trying to come up with
the best way to make it and then how were we going to keep the cost down. It wasn’t until
the boys approached Greg Griffiths for some ideas that they began to think it was a
possibility to build the course in time for the 2014 Karoonda Farm Fair. From that point
on the group of boys (Jack Norman, Josh Smithson, Stewart Heym, Mark Deionno, Bradley
Stone and Chris Kruger) have given up their own time to construct each of the 9 holes and
seek sponsorship to fund the project. In the last few weeks it has progressed from a
possibility to an absolute certainty with the laying of the synthetic grass on each hole.
This project had allowed the boys to develop many valuable skills in planning, organising,
leading and working as a team to achieve success. I am extremely proud of the boys
efforts over the course of the last twelve months and would like to thank them whole
heartedly for never giving up on the idea and following it through to the end. A very
special thank you to Greg Griffiths for his tireless work in support of the boys throughout
the project and to the Year 9/10 class for their help over the last few weeks to make sure
it will be completed in readiness for the Farm Fair next week.
If you are keen for a bit of fun at the Farm Fair this year come and visit the “School’s Out 4
Mini-Golf” course and admire the amazing amount of work that the boys have put into
creating 9 holes of challenging mini-golf. All proceeds go towards the Canberra Camp.
Finally we are still looking for some naming right sponsors for some of the holes, if you
are interested please contact the school as soon as possible to discuss this opportunity.
Farm Fair
Farm Fair is one week closer and we will are looking for families’
support to help on the school stall across the 2 days. This is a very
important fundraiser for the school and over the years the funds have
been put towards some fantastic programs and/or equipment for the
students. We would really appreciate parents support to continue this
fantastic fundraiser, please fill in and return the roster as soon as
possible.

Farm Fair
As the date of the Farm Fair rapidly approaches a special thank you is
extended to the families who have so far offered to help with our
fundraising efforts over the 2 days. This is an extremely good method
of earning money for the school as it allows us to generate income
from visitors to Karoonda from ‘outside money’, rather than asking
the same people to contribute each time.
A draft copy of the roster has been included in today’s newsletter. Kerry Cornford is
organising the roster, so if you are unable to assist by working on the stall, a monetary
donation is another way that you could help the school. Please return your slip and we will
try very hard to accommodate your request or please give Kerry a call on 85781120.
A copy of the return slip is included in today’s newsletter in case you have misplaced your
copy. Please return to the school asap or by Wednesday 26th March.

Year 8 Health
We have been learning about the importance of eating healthy
in Health this Term. We have researched the importance of
eating healthy and focused this research on our age group,
including looking at healthy lunch box ideas for school.
What children eat significantly affects their health for now and
in their future. School age is the perfect time for children to
learn about healthy food, their bodies and the importance of
being active.
In class we have been learning about the negative effects from skipping lunch. Under eating
can interfere with physical and mental development. Skipping lunch can get you distracted
during class. Skipping lunch will send you home from school starving which can lead to binge
eating and other unhealthy eating habits when arriving home.
Nutrition is important for kid’s growth and development, also it helps prevent illness. Children
need a wide variety of food to balance out their diet. Fruit and veg is a jackpot in health and
nutrients. It is a well-known fact that children who eat a healthy amount of food have an
improved concentration and ability to learn. Medical authorities and nutrition researchers
have documented that youngsters who eat nutritious meals every day lead active lifestyles
and tend to excel.
A healthy lunch will provide you with enough calories to keep you going
for the entire day no matter what your activity level. It’s important for
us as children to be involved in making our lunch in the morning or the
night before. To make sure we have what we need for a healthy
lunchbox we need to ensure the right things are going into our shopping
trollies at the supermarket.
As a Year 8 class we have learnt the importance of a healthy and nutritious lunch. We have
learnt how to read a nutrient table to identify what food is good for you and what is
sometimes food. No food is bad for you however foods high in saturated fat, sugar and
sodium should be eaten in smaller portions and less often.
Each week we are going to be providing you with healthy lunchbox recipes so watch this
space.
*Healthy tips for this week swap a fruit box for a plain flavoured milk box (not flavoured milk).
You can buy these from IGA and they are a lot healthier than a fruit box as fruit boxes are high
in sugar*

Ideas to Build Resilience in Children Part 2
Last week I had a few suggestions about how to help build resilience in children. This list
of ideas is continued below: Just trying to implement one idea with your children is a
great start
• Teach your child to identify struggles as challenges to
overcome, teach them phrases such as “this too shall pass”
or “every challenge makes you stronger” to spark this
outlook.
• Encourage your child to maintain a positive attitude about
chores or homework by teaching them creative ways to
find fun in work.
• If your child is older, give them the chance to wait for family meals instead of
snacking any time they want.
• Remind your child to be patient with a younger sibling’s interference with their
toys; teach them that relationships are more important than *things*.
• Help your child learn self- control regarding electronic mediums and entertainment
by demonstrating your own restraint.
• Allow your child to experience the extremes of temperature by dressing
accordingly, not hiding away from the weather.
• Resist the urge to run to your child’s rescue immediately, such as when you see
them having trouble putting on clothes or feeding themselves.
• Do not allow your child to interrupt when adults are speaking to one another; set up
an age-appropriate method for them to practice taking their turn.
• Give your child many opportunities to share their belongings and their food, by
inviting guests over and setting up ways they can be generous.
I wish you a good week.

Year One
Update
Super Hero’s,
Harmony Day, St
Patrick’s Day,
BollyWood Dancing
and Pick a Peck Of
Pickled Peppers
incursions and
gifts of solar
powered crickets and insect stickers,
made week 8 a varied and interesting
week for the R/1 class.
On Monday we made leprechauns and
completed two work sheets about St
Patrick’s Day. We also watched two
videos, one about St Patrick’s life and
one in which we counted leprechaun
gold in a pot at the end of a rainbow by
1s, 2s, 5s and 10s. We also made a class
book about what we would each do if
we really could find gold at the end of
a rainbow.
On Thursday morning we watched some
graceful, Indian, Bollywood dancing,
but mostly we were taught the steps to
one Bollywood style dance.
In the afternoon we talked about solar
panels and were very lucky to each
receive a solar powered vibrating
cricket and some insect stickers
donated by Liam and Blake’s parents,
Nicole and Ant McKenzie. We appreciated this very much and wish to thank them
for their contribution to our Science Insect topic.

On Thursday many of us
dressed up as Super Heroes
to support research into
Muscular Dystrophy and
some dressed in orange to
recognize Harmony Day. We
read a story about people in
the world being very
different but that in some
ways they are the same. We
began some craft work
based on the Harmony Day
theme to share at Primary
Assembly during week 11.
The performance, Pick a Peck of Pickled Peppers was an entertaining way to learn
more about poetry and rhyme, a great way to spend the final afternoon of a busy
school week.
Karoonda Area School Recycling Reminder
This is just an important reminder to the school community regarding the recycling system at
our school. There are four different bins at the school. These four bins all have different uses
which are listed below.
Plastics like chip packets, wrappers, cans/bottles/fruit boxes, cardboard,
glad wrap, straws.
Paper:
Paper, cardboard, pencil sharpening, tissues, lunch order bags.
Rubbish:
Very little such as
polystyrene, materials.
Chook Scraps: Fruits, sandwiches
Co- mingle:
It is important that the rubbish at our school is put
into the correct bins. It is easy to do this and it
makes our job in sorting the waste easier. It is also
important so that we are reducing the amount of
rubbish being collected each week. We want our
school to be as environmentally friendly as
possible ☺. Thank you.

Year 3/4 Update
It’s hard to believe the countdown for the end of Term 1 is already on! The busy term has
continued with Sports Day and plenty of performances and fun as we learn!
Sports Day was an extremely enjoyable day, perfect weather and all of the Year 3 and 4
students were engaged and had a good go at every event! I was so proud of their efforts,
participation and achievements. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the parents
who helped and supported throughout the day, your time was greatly appreciated.
I am so pleased to see most of
the students reading at home
and so often. PRACTICE
MAKES PROGRESS and even if
your child is reading novels
they are still constantly
coming across new words to
decipher and therefore need
the REGULAR reading practice.
I have seen many children
improve dramatically by
reading every day with us at
school and continuing that
practice at home every night.
As promised I have included a
photograph of our HOME reading progress and as you can see the majority of students are
past the 20 or 40 night mark, so well done!
40 nights +

Last week was Harmony Day and
Superhero Day and we had a few
students either dressed in orange
or in a superhero outfit. Our first
Harmony Day activity was
discussing what cultural
differences we know about such
as skin colour, languages, food,
clothing etc. and that a world with
peace, acceptance and care is
what we need. Then we decorated
bunting flags with pictures and
words that remind us of cultural
differences and once finished we

will attach them to a string and display them in the classroom. Later in the day we joined the
5/6 class to learn about Henna and decorated a hand and foot template with Henna patterns
which are looking fantastic with lots of clever detail. These will also soon be on display within
the classroom. We were lucky to also participate in a Bollywood Performance where we learnt
a Bollywood dance and the students looked fantastic bopping along to some Indian Bollywood
music.
We were also
delighted with the
return of a very
eccentric and fun
performer who
performed a show
called ‘Pick a Peck of
Pickled Poems’. The
students giggled their
way through the show
and joined in at every
opportunity. Brodie
was picked to receive an origami
dinosaur which featured in the
performance and Erin P. was chosen to
be a part of an ‘Ants in my Pants’ poem.
Also in the classroom we have been
working on our self-editing skills in
English while writing recounts and
narratives. Next we will be looking at
exposition/persuasive writing. James and
the Giant Peach is as popular as ever and
we are enjoying the giant peach’s
adventures!
In Maths we have being looking at Time
and how to use both analogue and digital
clocks and the students are becoming
really good at telling me when a lesson
finishes or how many minutes until
recess or lunch. We have also been
improving our times tables and natural
maths addition strategies.
AT KAROONDA AREA SCHOOL WE VALUE: RESPECT, HONESTY AND SUCCESS
18
In Science we have been looking into a process called photosynthesis
which is how plants make their own food and created self-watering
pots for bean seeds (unfortunately most of our seeds didn’t shoot so
we will try again next week!). In Design and Tech we have been
creating and exploring parachutes and paper planes by following
procedural instructions.
It’s almost interview time and I would like to see every child’s parent/s
come in to receive some feedback about your child’s learning and
development. The teacher-parent partnership is an extremely important one and your
attendance for a 10 minute chat will help to keep us working together on the same goals to
benefit your child and their continued progress. See you then!

Big Science Competition
In 2014, the school will provide an opportunity for students
to challenge themselves in the Big Science Competition.
This one hour international competition is open to students
of all abilities at three different levels:
Junior (Year 8), Intermediate (Years 9 and 10) and Senior
(Years 11 and 12).
Questions test students’ critical thinking and problem-solving as well as their science
knowledge.
Each student who takes part will receive a certificate as well as detailed feedback on their
performance in the competition. They also go into a draw to win hundreds of iTune and
Movie vouchers.
Our school will receive a comprehensive report for each paper level showing how each
student performed on each question, the percentage of students in each cohort who
answered correctly, and a comparison with national results.
The Big Science Competition will be held in school on 21st May 2014.
The Big Science Competition is organized by Australian Science Innovations, a non-profit
organization committed to providing high quality science extension programs that inspire,
challenge and raise the aspirations of students in science.

do at least one shift on the canteen over the Farm Fair weekend. The money from this
weekend goes into resurface our courts and do minor repairs, so it is money that is well spent,
and ensures that we all have a great facility.
