NEWSLETTER - SEASON 2009/10 - NO. 1
24TH AUGUST, 2009
A number of events are being staged across the KoolSport NCEL area for clubs to have their say on
how the League is run.
As part of a new initiative called 'Your League Your Say', the forums will allow all our member teams to ask
questions or make comments to the NCEL as part of our commitment to improving communication between
the League and its clubs.
Up to four people can attend from each club at their event and that can include team managers or a
supporters' representative.
A number of League representatives will be at each meeting to answer questions or give advice.
League Chairman David Morrall said: "This is the clubs' chance to have their say in League matters since the
information gained at these meetings will form the basis of our plans for the forthcoming season.
"It's hoped that by introducing meetings with small groups that all clubs will contribute."
There have already been three of the meetings and all have been very successful, bringing a number of new
ideas to the League.
They were Group One which included Bridlington Town, Hall Road Rangers, Pickering Town, Scarborough
Athletic at Pickering Town on Monday 10th August.
Group Two was Appleby Frodingham, Barton Town Old Boys, Bottesford Town, Grimsby Borough, Winterton
Rangers at Winterton Rangers on Monday 17th August
Group Three was Arnold Town, Long Eaton United, Lincoln Moorlands Railway, Rainworth Miners Welfare,
Shirebrook Town, Teversal at Rainworth Miners Welfare on Thursday 20th August
These are the venues and dates for the remaining four meetings, all of which commence at 7pm:
Group Four - Armthorpe Welfare, Askern Villa, Brodsworth Welfare, Rossington Main, Selby Town, Tadcaster
Albion - at Askern Villa, Tuesday 25th August

Funk Commits to
Wrens
(Source: Rainworth MW)
Rainworth Miners Welfare have quashed
rumours of boss Rudy Funk's departure.
The Wrens manager has been linked with a
number of vacant posts at higher levels after
he had led the NCEL club to their second
promotion in four years.
But, he put an end to all the speculation by
signing a new two year deal with a further
year's option on Monday night.
Talk has been rife that Funk, whose contract
expired at the end of the season, would be a
target for, among others, UniBond Division
One South clubs Glapwell or Shepshed
Dynamo, both of whom have just parted
company with their managers.
Chairman Brian Reece publicly announced at
Friday's club presentation night that there
was no question of the manager moving on
to pastures new, and slammed the
speculation that had sparked the rumours.
Mr Reece said: "Let's lay this needless idle
gossip to rest now and say that neither Rudy
Funk nor Billy Millar ﴾assistant manager﴿ will
be going anywhere.
"When they came to us four years ago the
club had gone through a bad time and only
avoided relegation from the Central Midlands
Supreme Division because other clubs had
failed to meet that league's floodlights rule.
"They said then that their intention was to
lead us to the UniBond League, they are now
just one step away from fulfilling that
promise, and they will be staying to complete
the job."
Funk said on Monday: "The future is bright at
Rainworth and that's why I think we should
stick together and see the job through, so let
me emphasise that I had no intention of
moving elsewhere.
"There will always be speculation linking a
manager who has had success to higher
placed clubs, and it's flattering to hear your
name mentioned in this manner, but why
would I want to move when I have everything
I want at Rainworth?
"I have enjoyed very much both the highs
and the lows, the tears and the joys, of the
past four years. When I look at the
infrastructure of the club, the people I work
with – both players and behind the scenes
staff – and the ground and facilities we have,
there is no reason on earth to want to go
elsewhere.
"Anyone who knows what football is all about
can see how much hard work goes in to
making this club successful. I myself am not a
quitter and it would be foolish to give what
we have achieved at the club to someone
else.
"The people who run Rainworth have made it
a better organised club than many at higher
levels, we have a fabulous bunch of players,
and who in their right mind would want to
walk away from that?
"The only incentive would be money, and that
is one thing which has never played a major
part in my life. Being happy doing what you
are doing is much more important to me
than money, and if, as I am, you are happy at
home, happy at work, and happy at your
football club, what more does anyone want
above that?
"In four years Billy and I have built something
very special at Rainworth, and we look
forward to continuing to build and progress
for many more years to come."

The committee of Thackley Football Club wish
to place on record their grateful thanks for the
services rendered by departing head coach Sean
Regan.
During his two year stint with the club, the former
Manchester United and Sheffield United protégé
cemented his reputation as a creative and
innovative trainer.
His decision to seek fresh challenges comes at the
end of a season in which Thackley amassed 62
points - a total not bettered in thirteen years.
(Source: Liversedge FC)
Liversedge are pleased to announce that Sean
Regan has accepted the position of first team
manager/coach for the coming season.
Sean had been at fellow NCEL side Thackley as first
team coach for the last two years and enjoyed his
time there but now feels he is ready to fill the role
of manager.
A club spokesperson said: "Sean has enough
enthusiasm for the position and offers Sedge a
quality of coaching that the whole club hope to
benefit from!"
The club have received six applications for the job
after Steve Newton stepped down following
Liversedge's final game of the Northern Counties
East League Premier Division season.
"We feel extremely lucky to have secured the
services of Sean," said Steve Newton who has
stepped down from manager but will remain at
Liversedge, helping the club in their progression.

Woolford is Iron
Hero
A former NCEL player was the
hero for Scunthorpe United as they claimed
promotion to the Championship in dramatic
fashion.
Martyn Woolford, who spent three years with
Glasshoughton Welfare as a youngster, struck a
late winner in their 3-2 League One Play-Off
triumph over Millwall at Wembley.
After his spell at Leeds Road, he moved to Frickley
Athletic and then York City before signing for the
Glanford Park side.
And, he will now be playing against the likes of
Newcastle United and Middlesborough.
He said: "It's amazing, it's a dream come true for
me."

Colls Unveil New
Sponsor
(Source: Pontefract Collieries)
Pontefract Collieries have revealed a new main
sponsor for the club.
JJ Leisure, who specialise in sportswear, are the new
backers of the KoolSport NCEL Division One side.
The ground will be named after them and they will
also be shirt sponsors.
Chairman Trevor Waddington said: "Although it has
been a difficult year financially with our fabulous
committee having had to continuously put their
hand into their pockets, light is at the end of the
tunnel with a new sponsor coming on board for the
upcoming season.
"I would like to say a big thanks to Allan Howcroft,
owner of JJ Leisure and Howcroft Industrial
Supplies, for his substantial sponsorship package.
"Allan is also a local magistrate and is delighted
with the fantastic work we are doing with the club
for the people of Pontefract and the surrounding
areas. And, I am sure he will be with the club for
many years to come as we climb out of obscurity.
"JJ Leisure will take the prominent front position on
the first team kits and the stadium will take the new
name 'The JJ Leisure Stadium' in what's to be
initially a two year deal."

Stacey Leaves Long
Eaton
(Source: Evening Telegraph)
Glyn Stacey has stepped down as joint boss of
KoolSport NCEL Premier Division runners-up,
Long Eaton United.
It leaves Mark Harvey in sole command, telling the
Derbyshire Evening Telegraph: "Myself and Glyn
have been joint managers for the last four years.
"But, he wants to be on his own now, so he has
decided to move on.
"We are still good friends and I'm sorry to see him
go but wish him all the best for the future.
Brighouse Sign Up
Duo
(Source: Halifax Evening Courier)
Brighouse Town boss Mark Brier has wasted
little time in improving his squad, with the
addition of some new blood at St Giles Road.
Brier has swooped to land 27-year-old midfielder
or defender Andy Markham from NCEL Premier
Division side Winterton Rangers, who finished fifth
last season, as well as clinching the signature of
Kieran Corley, a promising young striker from
Liversedge who represents the county at under 18
level.
"I've known Andy since we were both at Halifax
Town and he's a classy player that will always do a
good job for the team," Brier told the Halifax
Evening Courier.
"His attitude is second to none, he's committed in
both training and matches and is a great example
to others.
"Andy had a couple of offers from higher level
clubs, but after a chat with myself and the
chairman, I know he was impressed with where we
are trying to take the club on and off the field and
I'm absolutely delighted he's agreed to join us."
Corley is a young but strong forward who has
scored regularly at both under 19 and first team
level for Liversedge in the Premier Division.
"Kieran has natural raw talent and an eye for goal,"

added Brier. "He will add value to the team and
also learn a lot from the other good players we
have at our club."
Mr Blow, who is managing director of D. I. Blow
﴾Holdings﴿ Ltd, a holding company with a chain of
opticians in the area, paid tribute to the work that
Mr Reece had done, and expressed his desire to
continue to build on it.
4th June, 2009
He said: "Brian has done a fantastic job as chairman
of the club, in presiding over our rise from the
Notts Alliance to the present level.
Role Reversal at
Wrens
(Source: Rainworth MW)
Rainworth Miners Welfare chairman Brian Reece
has reluctantly decided to take a step back and
has resigned from his post.
But he is not leaving the club altogether, and will
become vice-chairman in a role-reversal, with
previous vice-chairman Derek Blow stepping up to
the chairman's role.
Mr Reece, who has overseen the club's rise from
the old Notts Alliance through four divisions to
their new level, has cited personal reasons as his
motive for taking the step back.
"There are other important calls upon my time
which will mean I cannot devote as much as a
chairman of a club at our new level should," he
said.
"Without going into detail there are significant
health problems within my immediate family, and
my work situation has changed recently, so I feel it
is better to take one step down and let Derek take
over the helm.
"Derek has been vice-chairman here now for a two
and a half years and I was delighted to have him on
board when he first joined.
"He has wide experience of chairmanship at nonLeague level, having occupied that role at Teversal
and, before that, jointly founding North Notts FC
who went on to take the old Sutton Town name.
"So, while I will remain as involved as I possibly can,
in my eyes Derek is the ideal man to oversee the
club's continuing rise through the Pyramid.
"I'm proud to have presided over the achievements
of the club during my time as chairman – success
which would not have been achieved without the
great team of people running the club."
6
"He will be a hard act to follow, but remains
involved and we will continue to work as a
partnership, just as we have done so far.
"His personal circumstances mean that he now
needs to step back for a while, but on the face of
things little will change. The club's ambitions are
well documented, we still have UniBond League
football in our sights, and I hope I will be able to
help to bring about the realisation of that aim."
Commenting on the change, Wrens manager Rudy
Funk said: "I well remember the day when I first
walked into Rainworth and Brian Reece made me
feel at home straight away.

Phillips Apologises to
Seadogs
"He's done a lot on the player front too, so I'm sad
that he has found it necessary to step down, but at
the same time delighted that he will remain
involved with the club.
Phillips threw his shirt down and stormed off after
being substituted. The midfielder then had an
altercation with a group of fans on his way to the
dressing-room.
"At the same time Derek Blow is a man for whom I
have the utmost respect and regard. He was
chairman during my time at Teversal so I know him
to be a wonderful man to work with and very
professional in his approach."
He said: "I want to apologise to the players, board
members and the fans for what I did on Sunday. It
was totally out of order and what I did just wasn't
me.
KoolSport Northern Counties East League 2009/10 Newsletter - Issue 1 - 24th August, 2009

Scarborough Athletic midfielder Scott Phillips
has apologised to the fans for his behaviour
during Sunday's FA Cup defeat to Guisborough
Town, reports the Scarborough Evening News.
Bignall is understood to be the only departure from
last season's promotion-winning squad, and Funk
said of him: "Phil played a huge part in our

"I just hope the fans take into consideration what I
have done on the pitch and hope they realise
nothing like that will ever happen again. I have
massive respect for the fans."
And, congratulations to him as well from all of us at
the KoolSport NCEL.
"Since that time his dealings with me have always
been gentlemanly, he has been unstinting in his
support for everything that Billy Millar and I have
tried to do, and we have enjoyed an excellent
working relationship.
Funk has also paid tribute to striker Phil Bignall,
who has parted company with the club by mutual
consent.
"I will accept any fines or punishment the
management deem necessary.
"I don't want to play my football anywhere else, I
want to continue playing for Scarborough. I would
also like to apologise to the fan behind the goal
who I had a confrontation with, it was silly and
uncalled for.
"When I came off the pitch I was frustrated and
annoyed with myself because I wasn't having a
good game but that doesn't excuse the way I
behaved. I didn't mean to upset any fans.

Temporary Directions
to Wrens Ground
(Source: Rainworth MW)
Due to roadworks in the centre of Rainworth,
directions to the Welfare Ground have been
temporarily altered.
The B6020 Southwell Road East is scheduled to be
closed for six weeks meaning that traffic entering
the village from the west ﴾Mansfield and A617﴿
CANNOT access the ground via the centre of the
village.
During this time, traffic along the A617 to the south
of Mansfield should continue ahead at the
22
roundabout onto the dual carriageway, continue
through some traffic lights where the ground
comes into view on the right, and up the hill to a
roundabout where you should turn right, then right
again at the mini-island down Kirklington Road to
the ground entrance.
If coming via Mansfield on the A6191, turn left at
the island onto the dual carriageway then proceed
as above.
If leaving the northbound M1 at j27 ﴾A608﴿, follow
Mansfield signs as far as Hollinwell Corner traffic
lights on A611 ﴾edge of Kirkby-in-Ashfield﴿ then
turn right onto B6020 via Ravenshead and
Blidworth, bearing right as you leave Blidworth for
Rainworth.
Down a long straight hill please observe the speed
limit ﴾a child was killed by a speeding motorist
here﴿, and at T-junction at bottom of hill turn left
then immediately right at lights to ground.
Traffic coming westbound along the A617 from the
A614 is not affected. Ignore the road works signs
prior to the roundabout and turn left to proceed
into the village as normal. The works are beyond
the ground entrance from this direction.

enjoyed by the Football Club, as well as local
people."
Tony Reeve, Chairman of Bottesford Town FC, said:
"The project has come to fruition as a result of the
efforts and hard work undertaken by members of
the Football Club management team and the
significant support and contributions from a
number of 'partners' in the project.
"Guidance was sought and obtained from the
Lincolnshire
Football
Association
who
in
conjunction with the Football Foundation Technical
Department assisted in determining the project
specification.
"The Voluntary Action North Lincolnshire team
﴾VANL﴿ provided guidance on how to approach
partnership funding and, as a result, we established
the following 'stakeholders' in our scheme to all of
whom I express the sincere thanks of the Football
Club:
It enables the club to meet its current and future
needs of its development as a FA Charter Standard
Community Club.
"The Landfill Communities Fund of Waste Recycling
Group ﴾WRG﴿ which is administered by the
Environmental Body WREN, who provided a grant
of £46,760.
It will provide for four changing rooms with
showers, two officials changing rooms, W.C.
provision for male, female and disabled, disability
access, a meeting room, a player's treatment room
and a utilities room.
"To Biffaward, a multi-million pound environment
fund managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife
Trusts ﴾RSWT﴿, which utilises landfill tax credits
donated by Biffa Waste Services, a grant of
£38,377.
The proposed layout will accommodate all
personnel who utilise the present playing facilities
at Birch Park, all on a seven days a week basis.
"The Football Stadia Improvement Fund ﴾FSIF﴿ who
contributed £16,093 towards the scheme on the
basis that the club's 1st team who play in Division 1
of the Northern Counties East League, will benefit
from the use of the facilities."
Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football
Foundation and the FSIF, said: "We warmly
congratulate Bottesford Town Football Club and
the Lincolnshire County FA for their hard work and
dedication in securing this award.
The Chairman went on to emphasise the support
that the club had received throughout the planning
and preparation phases of the scheme from
members of the North Lincolnshire Council.
He is feeling okay considering the circumstances,
but it is a big blow for the lad and the club.
"Sport is playing a central role in helping people to
stay fit, strengthen communities and promote
responsibility amongst young people.
They awarded the Club with a grant of £30,000
from the 'Aid to Communities' Fund.
Everybody at the club and at the KoolSport NCEL
wishes him all the very best, and hopes for a
speedy recovery.
"I am delighted that Football Foundation funding
and FSIF funding are supporting this excellent
facility project in Scunthorpe.
And the local Bottesford Town Council also made a
generous donation of £5,000 towards the exciting
project.

Rainworth manager Rudy Funk said: "In many ways
the backroom staff can be the most important part
of a club, and I'm delighted to welcome Junior on
board.
"Mark Place has done an excellent job as coach
over the last three years, but he now has greater
family calls on his time, and Junior is the ideal man
to build on Mark's good work.
"I've always admired Junior and I worked with him

extraordinary fitness coach with a great pedigree
and he also knows a lot about management.
"I don't think there is a better dressing room
anywhere than ours, and with Junior now also

exception, speak very highly of him, and getting

Worrall will be taking over the post of joint
manager.
He will be joining from Ilkeston Town where he has
been reserve team manager and general coach.
He replaces Glyn Stacey who left the club stating
he wished to have a go at management in his own
right elsewhere.
The club can also announce that skipper Micky
Allsop has had his ankle operation and hopes to
return to action sometime in October.

He currently oversees four ground grading officers,
with Bruce Hatton staying in the role whilst Karl
Blackburn, who has been a Club Representative in
the past, becomes part of the team.
Joining them are two new officers, David Kirk and
Stuart Lloyd who NCEL clubs will know for their
work at former club Harrogate Railway and who
have also been match officials in the past.
Jason Harrison has been re-elected as Website
Manager.
The post of Referees' Assessors' Secretary remains
vacant but interviews take place next week to fill
that role.
And, two club representatives are required with

The club will also be honoured at a civic reception
at Long Eaton Town Hall next month.
It will be hosted by newly elected mayor Terry
Holbrook whilst councillors Mike Wallis and Roland
Hosker - who gives a lot of time to the club - will
also be in attendance.
The event takes place on Monday 10th August and
had been delayed to allow manager Mark Harvey
to complete his holiday to Portugal.
21-year-old James Hanson has made the move into
the pro ranks after a spell at UniBond Premier side,
Guiseley.
Hanson told the Telegraph & Argus: "I am
absolutely delighted to get a deal. It's a dream
come true.
"It certainly beats working until 10 o'clock at night.
"I've been working part-time at the Co-op near me
and it's just been fitting in with my semiprofessional career.

Staveley to Help
Youngsters be Seen
(Source: Staveley Miners Welfare)
Staveley Miners Welfare are helping local
schools and young pupils by supplying high viz
vests for their walks to and from school.
"I've still got to work my week's notice though and
I don't finish there until Wednesday.
"I'm still coming to terms with it to be honest,
playing with the sort of players that are here. It is a
big step up but I'm more than confident I can make
it."
As members of the local Staveley community, with
the aid of their main sponsor BARIS Facades &
Linings, the club are aiming to expand their
community spirit by providing the safety aids
ahead of the dark winter mornings and evenings.
Staveley are looking to provide these free of
charge, including delivery, to a number of pupils
that local schools may feel would benefit and
suggest maybe pupils aged between 5 and 10.
They are also hoping to expand the offer to include
any adults that may require them eg. teachers,
walking monitors, if applicable.
The vests will bear the Staveley MWFC emblem on
the back and any youngster wishing to attend
match days at Staveley MWFC and are wearing one
will be admitted to the ground free of charge with
a full paying adult.

at George Pindar College - which would have been
the Seadogs' new home - have been withdrawn
after an objection from Government body Sport
England.
will allow entry into all seventeen home games of
the first team league fixtures in the KoolSport
Northern Counties East League Division One and
Cup games.
The idea was due to be discussed at Scarborough
Council's Planning Committee meeting on
Thursday.
Season ticket holders also receive a free match day
programme for those games and will be allowed
entry into all Under 19 home games.
But, George Pindar Community Sports College
headteacher Hugh Bellamy has withdrawn the item
from the meeting's agenda following the sporting
body's comments.
In addition, the club have introduced a sliding scale
to allow late purchases of the season ticket to take
place, with a ticket for eight or less games as low as
£28.00 ﴾adult﴿ and £14.00 ﴾concessions﴿.
The college will meet with Sport England
representatives at the end of the month and hopes
to resubmit the plans in time for August's meeting.
Locals have recently objected to the proposals,
saying they fear they will bring noise and nuisance
behaviour to the area.
For more details, contact Kev Newton by email at
[email protected] or by phone on
07711 358060.
Sport England opposes Pindar's plans because it is
concerned that they would restrict use of the
college's playing fields for sports other than
football.
However, Mr Bellamy has said that he expects the
objections to be withdrawn once Sport England
have seen the site.

Broddy Return for
Radford
(Source: Brodsworth Welfare)
Brodsworth Miners Welfare have welcomed
back Alan Radford as the club's joint manager.
He will be alongside Colin Bishop in the dugout
and the club say they are delighted that he has
returned.
The 29-year-old played alongside the likes of
Gordon Strachan, David Batty, Harry Kewell and
Jonathan Woodgate at Elland Road before
suffering a serious leg injury which set him back in
the professional game.
He joined Doncaster Rovers then Harrogate Town,
who he helped win the UniBond Division One title.
He has also had spells at Farsley Celtic, Liversedge,
Harrogate Railway and Tadcaster Albion.
"I've known Simon for quite a few years, through
my involvement at Liversedge," Brighouse boss
Mark Brier told the Evening Courier.
"He scored one of the best goals I've ever seen at
this level of football, playing for my reserve side at
Clayborn which just had people's jaws hanging
open.
"He is calm, adds massive experience and quality to
our club and will help our first team and the
younger players with his knowledge.
"He's not fully fit yet after an operation and we'll
take it steady but I'm delighted to have him at the
club."
Town have also signed former Halifax Town youth
player Glen O'Gara.
The defender has played in the United States and
last season was at Farsley Celtic.
A spokesperson said: "This is Alan's second spell at
the club. He was manager a few years ago but
sadly had to leave.
"We hope his return will be the start of a successful,
stable and long-lasting management team with
Colin and they both have the committee's backing."

Seadogs Tell Fans To
Name Their Price
(Source: Scarborough Athletic)
In a dramatic move, Scarborough Athletic are
offering supporters the chance to decide how
much to pay for their own season ticket for the
new campaign.
The price can be as little as £65 for adults or £25
for concessions ﴾under 16s, seniors, full time
students﴿, enabling those affected by the economic
downturn to still watch their team.
However, the club is also hoping that the scheme

will encourage fans to pay what they feel a season
ticket is worth to them individually.
Boro chairman Simon Cope said: "Plenty has
changed since this time last year: the country is
officially in a recession, we have been promoted,
and thanks to the club's financial success, we now
have to charge VAT on admission prices and
season tickets.
"We were struggling to set season ticket prices
accordingly, so we thought we would let the fans
do it instead.
"FC United of Manchester have been running a
similar scheme this summer that we have been
keeping a close eye on, and so far it has been very
successful for them. We are hoping Scarborough
fans are as financially responsibly as those at
FCUM.
"The scheme is about empowerment and collective
responsibility. It shows we can all pull together to
increase the prosperity of the club's future in a way
that reflects our founding principles as a fansowned club.
"Scarborough Athletic FC is owned by its 500
members, so everyone has a vested interest in
making this scheme a success."
Meanwhile, the Seadogs have agreed in principle
to a return back to Scarborough.
Following meetings between representatives of
George Pindar Community Sports College and
members of Athletic's board, and discussions at the
club's monthly board meeting, the decision has
been taken that the club will play at the proposed
Pindar development.

he's decided that Ponte has the most ambition and
potential.
A defender by trade but who can also play in

Eagle Valley Official
Opening
(Source: Nottm Evening Post)
The official opening of Arnold Town's Eagle
Valley Stadium happens tomorrow evening and the match with Derby County will also be
raising money for a worthwhile cause.
Rams boss Nigel Clough has promised to send a
strong squad for the match that will also collect
cash for a Bingham family whose two-year-old son
is battling cancer.
Toby Clough was diagnosed with a rare form of
cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma in his eye
muscles when he was 21 months old.
After six months of intensive chemotherapy Toby is
set to be treated with a type of radiotherapy in
Switzerland.

Winterton Rangers have signed up former Notts
County and Scunthorpe United striker Gary
Jones for the new campaign.
Parents Claire and Kyle are hoping the treatment,
known as proton chemotherapy, will be paid for by
the NHS and are trying to raise £20,000 to pay for
their costs.
Manager Richard Sennett says he is delighted to
bring the 39-year-old, who spent five years at NCEL
rivals Armthorpe Welfare, to the club.
They will have to pay for accommodation for two
months while Toby has treatment, their flights and
childcare for their four-year-old son Sam.
He added: "Gary has agreed to a coaching role as
well as playing for us this season and his
experience will be invaluable.
The match kicks off at Eagle Valley on Tuesday 14th
July at 7.45pm.
"He's a six foot four striker so is good in the air, but
he has the ability to hold up possession to bring
others into pla, and can bag you his fair share of
goals.
"The squad is building nicely and Gary will support
the younger players."

League and was the golden boot winner at Notts
