One show you won’t want to miss!
T
he Big One, the Borden NCHA Futurity, will be better
than ever this year. The 50th NCHA Futurity will be
held in 2011 and the National Cutting Horse Association is pulling out all the stops to make it a show you don’t want
to miss.
If you’ve ever thought about going to the NCHA Futurity,
this is the year to do it. Now you can come to Fort Worth, see
the greatest cutting in the world, be a part of history, and enjoy
the ultimate equine vacation.
NCHA Futurity 50 World Championship
The world’s most promising three-year-old cutting horses compete over 20 days in the Will Rogers Coliseum for a total purse
of $4 million. The Open Champion’s name will take its place
on the sport’s most coveted trophy and earn a $200,000 pay
day—the richest cutting horse prize of the year.
And, as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, on the night of the
Open Finals, you can bid to be the first spectator to ever watch
an NCHA Triple Crown event from the 6th Judge’s Box. The
lucky bidder also will receive a pair of Futurity 50 commemorative chaps signed by all the living Futurity winners. All proceeds
from this auction go to support the NCHA Foundation.
Neiman Marcus Futurity Champions’ Cup,
presented by Jerry Durant Auto Group
In celebration of the 50th NCHA Futurity, the National Cutting
Horse Association will present a unique event that spotlights
the Futurity’s history in a crowd-pleasing format. All 32 living
past Open Futurity champion riders were invited to take part in
the NCHA Futurity Champions’ Cup, to be held in Fort Worth,
Texas.
The Neiman Marcus/NCHA Futurity Champions Cup, presented by the Jerry Durant Auto Group, will start at 4:00 p.m.
in Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, November 26.
Red Steagall, the Great American Storyteller, Hall of Fame Rider
Bill Riddle, and Tom Holt, the Voice of Cutting, will host the
event.
The past champions will compete in one of three age groups,
with the winner of each division receiving a specially designed
champion’s buckle. All entrants will receive a custom trophy
sculpted by Weatherford, Texas, artist Kelly Graham.
“The 50th NCHA Futurity gives us a unique opportunity
to honor our past champions in a format that will appeal to
cutting horse fans everywhere,” said NCHA Executive Director
Jeff Hooper. “By bringing together great riders from a span of
five decades with some of the top horses in training today, the
Futurity Champions’ Cup promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime
experience.”
General admission is $10, with proceeds to benefit the NCHA
Foundation in its mission to preserve the history and protect
the future of cutting. Tickets are available online at nchatickets.
com. Because of the unique nature of this event, admission will
be by ticket only; no buttons or other passes will be honored.
Neiman Marcus will host a Futurity Champions’ Cup party
for all NCHA members at their Ridgmar Mall store on Friday
evening, November 25, with food, beverages, live music and
Christmas shopping opportunities. For 104 years, the Neiman
Marcus name has been synonymous with quality, service, and
the Texas experience.
One lucky fan at Saturdays event (18 years old or older) will
win $15,000 off the purchase price of any new vehicle from
Jerry Durant Auto Group of Weatherford, Texas, the Official
Triple Crown Auto Dealership of the National Cutting Horse
Association. A drawing of ticket numbers at the Futurity Champions’ Cup will determine the winner.

Get cultured in the cultural district
Fort Worth’s cultural district is home to five major museums,
all located blocks from the coliseum. Feed your artsy side by
visiting any or all of these museums, and see what’s in store
when you get there.
Amon Carter Museum
Will Barnet: Relationships, Intimate and Abstract, 1935-1965.
An American pioneering printmaker, painter, and educator,
Will Barnet is known for his works depicting humans and animals in casual life as well as fantasy worlds. This year would
have marked Barnet’s 100th birthday, and this exhibit features nearly 50 of his works that show the evolution of his art
from realism to abstraction.
130
Masterworks of American Photography: Landscape
This exhibit brings together an assortment of the Amon
Carter Museum’s magnificent landscape photographs, from
daguerreotypes to ink-jet prints. Landscape photography has
long been a focal point of American art and of the Amon
Carter Museum.
Feature Photography Exhibition: Work
Photographers throughout history have captured people in
their essence doing their jobs. This modest survey exhibition,
drawn from the museum’s extensive collection, showcases
photographers’ recognition of work from how people are
often defined by their jobs to their documentation of labor’s
troubles and successes.
John Marin: Modernism at Midcentury
John Marin is one of America’s foremost modernists, and he
was one of the first American artists to make abstract paintings. This special exhibition of more than 50 oil and watercolor paintings from his 20-year career, from 1933 to 1953,
will be on view at the Amon Carter.
Modern Art Museum
Richard Diebenkorn: The Ocean Park Series
Based on the aerial landscape, the large-scale abstract compositions of Richard Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park series are the
artist’s most famous work. The Modern Art Museum of Fort
Worth is featuring more than 75 paintings, prints and drawings spanning two decades.
Fort Worth Museum of Science and History
Alexandre Hogue: An American Visionary, Paintings and Works on Paper
This retrospective display represents a vital link in Texas history, as Hogue remains the preeminent figure from the 1930s
and 1940s to consistently capture the look, feel, and psychological character of the Southwest landscape. Fort Worth is
the third and final stop on the exhibition’s limited-engagement tour.
National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame
The Cowgirl Who Became a Justice - Sandra Day O’Connor:
A 30th Anniversary Celebration
Prior to Sandra Day O’Connor, no other female in the United
States had been given as heavy and as public a yoke to carry
in representing women, the West and, in turn, the best interests of the nation. The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of
Fame proudly celebrates 2002 Hall of Fame Honoree Sandra
Day O’Connor on the 30th anniversary of her appointment to
the United States Supreme Court. C U T T I NG HOR SE CH AT T E R • NOV E M BE R 2011

Not since Michelangelo or Raphael had one artist affected so
many of his contemporaries and so irrevocably changed the
course of European painting. Caravaggio and His Followers in
Rome brings together approximately 60 paintings by Caravaggio and the artists who were first to respond to his revolutionary new style. The 400th anniversary of the artist’s death was
celebrated in 2010 with several significant exhibitions in Italy
that reconfirmed his legacy and the remarkable power of his
paintings.

they embark on a thrilling adventure. Along the way, they
encounter a Christmas tree that grows 40 feet, toy soldiers
battling mischievous mice, waltzing flowers, dancing candy,
and sparkling, swirling snowflakes that fall on dancers and

Sundance Square
Sundance Square is 35 blocks of fun in the heart of downtown
Fort Worth. Loaded with hotels, restaurants, shops and nightlife, it’s one of the most exciting downtown areas in Texas. It’s
also home to the Sid Richardson Museum featuring works by
Frederic Remington and Charles Russell.
Sundance Square offers something for everyone, and you
can enjoy a different experience each time you visit. The many
restaurants appeal to all palates and range from casual to elegant atmospheres, from intimate dining perfect for two, to
a family-style gathering place for as many as you can invite.
Each block is lined with notable stores like Barnes & Noble,
Jos. A. Bank, Pappagallo Classiques and Leddy’s Ranch at Sundance and nestled among them are intimate, locally-treasured
specialty boutiques like Earthbones and Vessels.
If you’re looking to be entertained, Sundance Square is
home to two live theatres, several museums and art galleries, a movie theatre, a comedy club and Bass Hall, one of the
world’s finest concert and performance halls. Live music from
venues like Scat Jazz Lounge and 8.0’s spills out into streets,
creating an unmatched ambiance that draws patrons into the
action. Challenge your friends to a taste-testing of hundreds
of beers at the infamous Flying Saucer—just don’t try them
all in one night. See all Sundance Square has to offer at www.

Historic Fort Worth Stockyards
The Fort Worth Stockyards’ National Historic District is a
terrific place to celebrate the romance of the American West.
Covering 15 square blocks, the Stockyards are home to hotels,
restaurants, the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, and some great
western nightlife including Billy Bob’s Texas—the “World’s
Largest Honky-Tonk”. Billy Bob’s is open daily and hosts top
country music performers. There are free line dance lessons
every Thursday and live bull riding every Friday and Saturday.
The Stockyards also host the famous Fort Worth herd. Twice
each day, Texas cowhands drive Longhorn steers through the
city’s streets offering and unforgettable glimpse into Cowtown’s colorful history. As the herd approaches, you’re greeted
by the jingle of spurs, cattle bawling, and rhythmic hoof beats
that bring a bygone era to life. Herd cowhands present a fun
and educational demonstration about the tools, equipment
and techniques used during the cattle drives of the late 1800’s.

cutting horse fans everywhere,” said NCHA Executive Director Jeff Hooper. “By bringing together great riders from a
span of five decades with some of the top horses in training
today, the Futurity Champions’ Cup promises to be a oncein-a-lifetime experience.”
General admission is $10, with proceeds to benefit the
NCHA Foundation in its mission to preserve the history
and protect the future of cutting. Tickets are available at
nchatickets.com. Because of the unique nature of this event,
admission will be by ticket only; no buttons or other passes
will be honored.
Neiman Marcus will host a Futurity Champions’ Cup
party for all NCHA members at their Ridgmar Mall store
on Friday evening, November 25, with food, beverages, live
music and Christmas shopping opportunities. For 104 years,
the Neiman Marcus name has been synonymous with quality, service, and the Texas experience.
Also at the event on Saturday, one lucky fan (18 years old
or older) will win $15,000 off the purchase price of any new
vehicle from Jerry Durant Auto Group of Weatherford, Texas,
the Official Triple Crown Auto Dealership of the National
Cutting Horse Association. A drawing of ticket numbers at
the Futurity Champions’ Cup will determine the winner.

M
ary Lee Dixon provided tremendous promotional
support for NCHA’s Futurity50.com campaign
through Lamar Advertising Company.
By making eight billboards available in the Fort Worth
area in the months leading up to the 50th NCHA Futurity,
she helped raise awareness of this milestone event and the
sport of cutting.
The NCHA salutes Mary Lee Dixon for her contribution on
behalf of the association and all of our members.
