by the presence of all or part
of an extra 21st chromosome.
Developmentally, children with
Down syndrome may display a
wide range of abilities, behavior,
and personalities. There is no
cure for Down syndrome.

the improvement of language

it a go with Frances, never doubting her
abilities, and always smitten with her. Every
kid is not the same—they are all unique.”
At 18 months of age, Frances began
attending The SPOT’s Developmental
Preschool. Under the guidance of therapists
Tracy Willis and Cindy Hale, and rehabilitation
technician, Krystal Crichlow, she has steadily
progressed with all developmental skills.
Once a child who needed one to one
assistance, she now works well in a group
and is a good friend to her peers. Frances
has also learned to converse in sentences,
identify all numbers and letters, work
independently on table top activities, run
and pedal a bike.
Frances and her family will leave The
SPOT at the end of summer as she transitions
to kindergarten. Her parents are confident
the time spent at The SPOT, however, has
been invaluable. “I met the most amazing
people—the kids, the professionals, and
Frances’ teachers,” said Michelle. “When
you open the door of The SPOT, you
automatically know you are in the right
place. It was where we were supposed to be.”

at their home on Thursday, March 3rd. Guests enjoyed hearing from Laura Shaffer Allen,
a 1986 Children’s SPOT graduate. Laura spoke of her journey from being a patient at
The SPOT to becoming a speech therapist herself—which included a rotation as a
speech therapy student at The SPOT.

Co-Chairmen Theresa and Daniel Alcazar and
Honorary Co-Chairmen Connie and Anthony Mendolia were joined by
a sold-out crowd to celebrate the marvelous outcomes of early, intensive pediatric therapy.
Children and their grown-ups enjoyed dazzling décor, enchanting entertainment, and
a delectable dinner. New this year, a table decoration contest resulted in masterpieces
more extravagant than ever. The tables were judged by HGTV’s Jennifer Bertrand,
NBC Action News’ Amy Hawley, and Mrs. Blandings, aka Patricia Shackelford.
Proceeds from the 2011 event benefit the Family Assistance Program, which makes
pediatric therapy possible for uninsured and underinsured Kansas City children.

Betty Holliday’s legacy at Saint Luke’s Hospital began in 1965 when
she gave birth to her first child. Shortly after, she became a member of
the Saint Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary where she served as president from
1995-1999 and Holly Ball Chair in 2000.
Betty’s journey continued after her first grandchild, Joey, was born
several months prematurely. Joey was referred to The Children’s SPOT for
regular evaluations and follow-ups. He was monitored by Physical Therapist,
Beverly Renfro and Occupational Therapist, Cindy Hale during weekly visits.
Joey was discharged from The SPOT a happy—and developmentally
healthy—little boy. Today he is an advanced 12 year old student in the
Blue Valley School district who enjoys science, playing the viola and
bike riding.
Betty credits The Children’s SPOT for Joey’s remarkable progress as an
infant and toddler. As an expression of this gratitude, she named The
SPOT in her will, a way for her legacy to live on and benefit patients for
years to come.
Betty says, “All of the Hollidays are thankful for the many good
experiences we have had over the years and know that Saint Luke’s has
always been, and still is, the best hospital in Kansas City.”
MORE ON PLANNED GIVING: Outlive Your Life
More and more people from all walks of life are discovering that
one of the easiest and most effective ways to touch future generations is to create a legacy through their will or other estate plans.
Contrary to a common misperception, you don’t have to be
wealthy to make a planned gift. However, you do have to be
generous. You also have to be passionate about a cause and able
to see the far-reaching impact your gift can have.
In simple terms, planned giving means leaving a gift from your
estate to a charitable organization such as The Children’s SPOT.
Your planned gift would serve our little ones for years to come.
Estate planning can offer significant tax savings, a secure life
income, and an ongoing contribution that outlives your life. Saint
Luke’s Foundation offers free professional counsel that carries no
obligation. To get started, contact Sara Toppen at 816-932-7489
or [email protected].
The 2011 Tholen Hill Team Charity Tennis Tournament
