The Children’s SPOT is committed to providing
quality pediatric therapy services, regardless
R
of a family’s ability to pay.
esearch shows that 80% of brain growth occurs before age 3 and an additional 10% of growth occurs before age 5. In the first year of life alone, the parts of the brain that differentiate sound become specialized and 700 new neural connections are formed every second. From these connections, social skills, cognitive-linguistic capabilities and emotional health emerge. Because these first years are so important, The Children’s SPOT is committed to
providing intervention at the earliest possible age. In fact, 74% of our patients are
between birth and 5 years of age. Unfortunately, many insurance plans offer minimal
to no coverage for pediatric therapy services because developmental disabilities are
considered a preexisting condition or not rehabilitative in nature. And, necessary
early intervention for a child with disabilities is time consuming and costly, leaving
many parents with the difficult choice of forgoing specialized intervention services.
Additionally, the economic climate and rising rates of diagnosis have created a further dilemma for an increased number of families. More parents than ever are turning to The SPOT’s experienced therapists for their
child’s rehabilitative needs. Many of these families come to The SPOT with severe
financial concerns, while decreased reimbursement rates leave The Children’s SPOT
with an operating loss. The Children’s SPOT actively responds with year-round
fundraising efforts. This allows us to provide both high quality and comprehensive
therapy services as well as financial support through The Family Assistance Program.
Support for patients on Medicaid or whose insurance does not cover therapy for developmental disabilities is provided on a sliding scale depending upon the patient’s income and family size. The Children’s SPOT pays a portion or the remaining balance of charges, accruing up to $125,000 in charity care expenses annually.
The Children’s SPOT relies heavily on a variety of funding sources including gifts
and grants from individuals, foundation, and corporations. We thank all who support The Children’s SPOT and know our program remains a strong and vital
community resource because of your help.
Sincerely,
Dick Hall

The Children’s SPOT
our
mission
The Children’s SPOT’s mission is to provide early and intensive
and developmental delays, regardless of ability to pay.
pediatric therapy services to infants and children with disabilities
Who we are
Since our humble beginnings in the basement of a building
on the Saint Luke’s Hospital campus in 1980, The Children’s
SPOT has offered Kansas City children with disabilities the
best possible start in life. Today, our cheerful building is a
safe place for children to overcome developmental challenges
and learn to function at their highest possible potential.
Our team of nine experienced and board-certified speech,
physical and occupational therapists foster a family-friendly
environment of innovative and individualized treatment.
Our Programs
Inpatient Therapy
Infants born prematurely or with a disability are monitored
by a Children’s SPOT Occupational Therapist in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The therapist monitors infants for
specific feeding difficulties and implements treatments to
help them grow and thrive. Ultimately, this therapy leads to
decreased stays in the NICU .
Neonatal Intensive Care Follow-Up
Saint Luke’s offers a strong continuum of care, even for the
tiniest of patients. Quality healthcare is provided from Labor
and Delivery to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to The
Children’s SPOT Neonatal Intensive Care Follow-up Clinic,
where periodic developmental screenings are performed to
assure that each baby is progressing appropriately. Developmental Preschool
Designed to provide intensive intervention in the context
of a social environment, this cornerstone therapy program
is goal oriented and highly individualized. Patients are
prepared to function at their highest level of ability in a
mainstream school setting.
Individual Therapy
The Individual Therapy program provides an added developmental boost for children in need of 1:1 intervention. Individual needs can range from mild to more significant
delays. At times this is offered in conjunction with the Developmental Preschool.
In the Community
Speech and Occupational Therapy services are provided
on-site at two local private schools, offering convenience for
parents and limited time out of the classroom for patients.
