NOTIONS . . .
from our president
Hope you are all staying cool and
having a great summer with your family
and friends. I hope some of you have
got some rain ... it is pretty dry at my
house.
For the past few weeks, moms have
been on my mind. My reflections
started the end of May that marked the
fifth anniversary of the death of my
mother. Then a few weeks ago, when
Kay Cox los her mother, I was
reminded again of that very special
relationship. It occurs to me on a
regular basis how important those
connections are. Many of us are
mothers and some of us grandmothers
but, for sure, none of us would be here
without one.
It is so fascinating to me to see how
these familial relationships work. Kay
has told me over the years some funny
stores about her mother and I realized
that she was a very good hearted,
sweet lady with a wonderful sense of
humor. The past few years, my
children have been pointing out some of
my “eccentricities” and reminding me
that those are “Granny” things and that I
am starting to scare them. A few
months ago I met Terry Mosher’s
mother and again it confirmed my belief
that “the acorn doesn’t fall far from the
tree”.
At a recent meeting, Marcia Shurtleff
brought two of her granddaughters.
Looking at and talking to those young
girls I was amazed at the connections and similarities in their
enthusiasm and attitude. It works
both ways. Our kids and grandkids,
and in some cases, nieces and
nephews, really do reflect the person
we are. I am constantly delighted
whenever I have the privilege of
meeting families of our members at
how the spirit of kindness always
shines through.
In late 1998 and early 1999 when
my sister was in her final days, she
said to me one day “Aren’t we lucky
to have had the parents we had?
They were kind and no matter waht
they did, it was always their very
best”. Now let me say here that we
were not raised by Ozzy and Harriett
but our parents were hard working,
very thoughtful people who strived to
do the right thing. Hardly a day went
by during her ilness that Beverly did
not tell me how lucky she was about
something. At the cancer centr when
I would take her for treatment she
would point out how lucky she was
that she was not as debilitated as
some we observed. She was dying
and still would be concerned for
others. If she saw a person that
seemed to be in distress she would

Covers for Kids Challenge

Having a good summer? Here’s how to keep cool:
think of all the quilts we will need when the winter winds
blow in ... it won’t be long until we need them again, so
consider making quilts for the kids. Just sit in front of
your a/c unit, crank it up, and pretend it is winter!!! We
are always in need of all types of quilts, tops, blocks, etc.
Those UFOs are what we are putting together at our
monthly Covers for Kids Workshops.
Speaking of that, please join us for our next one on
Saturday, August 26th. This workshop will be at
Hancock Fabrics in Garland at 190 and 78. They are on
the southeast corner of this intersection, next to Hobby
Lobby. We will be there from 9:30 - 5, but come only part
oof the day, if you can! Do let me know if you are
coming, so we know how many stations to set up.
The Covers for Kids Challenge is due this month to me
by August 24th in order to be judged. We have great
prizes for this, so please plan to get yours turned in.
However, if you don’t have it finished for judging, I will still
accept it any time. The quilts will be displayed at Quilt
Celebraiton 2007 and then donated to the charities. I
have a couple of packets left, for those of you who wish to
still make one, just contact me.
We have been getting lots of donated quilts and
toiletries. A big thank you goes to Nina Hall, Sheila
Haywood, Valerie Salter, Helen Conway, Rosemary
Soderstrom, Joan Caufield, Lu Peters, Happy Johns,
Pam Hanson, Cindy Southers, Theda and Marie’s
workshop, and Marcia Shurtleff for their donations at the
June meeting. If you would like to do bindings, quilting,
piecing, etc. please ask and I will give you a job to do.
We appreciate any help that you can give us. Keep Cool

Covers for Kids Workshop
Join us for the free workshop to help us make quilts for
kids!
Mark your calendar for Sat. August 26th. This
workshop will be at a new location for us. Hancock

Amazing but true! This is the Guild’s 10th Annual Covers
for Kids Challenge! Packets will be available until they are
gone! This year’s theme is Peter Rabbit.
The packet will contain 3 fabrics
this year. They are so CUTE
and will be fun to work with.
Please join us in making a
quilt for one of our children’s
charities! Packets are $5
each and include these fabrics
and a package of batting. You
will add some fabrics of your own,
and make a cute quilt for kids.
Your money will be returned to
you upon completion of the quilt! The completed quilts are
due on August 24th. This gives you the whole summer to
make something fun! Contact Rhonda Anderson by e-mail if
you have any further questions or would like a packet
reserved for you.

2007 Annual Retreat

Do you believe it, it is time to start making plans to go to
our annual retreat ~ January 11 through January 15, 2007.
Your answers to last year’s retreat questionnaire has
been very helpful and we are trying to accomodate as
many of your ideas as possible.
The theme is 1960s. The t-shirt design has been
chosen and it will be in those wonderful bright colors of the
60s: tangerine (orange), azalea (bright pink), key lime
(green), violet (light purple), and, of course, red. By the
way, was it “peace” or “piece”?
Our retreat quilt shop this next retreat is going to be
Texas Quiltworks. Wonder what wonderful fabrics they are
going to be bringing?
Several of you have asked if we could have a full
breakfast and no lunch; full breakfast and full lunch; or
continental breakfast and full lunch (like in the past) - well,
Tanglewood Resort is going to give each of us these
options. No, it is not all or nothing - we will each make our
own decision as to what meals we want to eat: breakfast,
lunch and dinner; breakfast, no lunch and dinner;
continental breakfast, lunch and dinner. The only cost
difference would be if you choose 3 full meals a day, which
will cost you $3.00 more per day (not bad). You will have
to decide when you fill out your registration form.
The registration forms will be in the next newsletter,
available on line, and at the meetings starting in
September.
Friendship Groups
Mary Howard
A special thanks to the Pieceful Friends for helping out
at the July meeting. The guild can use about 6 people
each month to help out at the membership table and
various other spots before the meeting. Helpers need to
arrive at the guild meeting by 6:30 p.m. When the speaker
brings quilts, we can also use a few to help hold up the
quilts. Friendship Groups, here is an opportunity for you to
pick your month. Take a look at the upcoming speakers
and your calendars. Then email your first and second
choices for service to me. This will be on a first come
basis. It is an easy way to help the guild and have fun
meeting people.

Endowment Report 2006
Margaret Wolf
Every year, the guild receives applications for an annual grant. The
Endowment Committee recommends to the Guild Board their
selections. This year, two grants will be awarded.
New England Quilt Museum has requested funding for a CD catalog
to coincide with a new exhibit called “Happy Birthday America”.
Everyone can enjoy the quilts assembled from the Bicentennial and the
Centennial Birthdays. Images of about 30 quilts are cataloged on the
CD with full page images and details. The exhibit at the New England
Quilt Museum starts August 17 thru October 22, 2006 in Lowell,
Mass nequiltmuseum.org. Then the quilts move to Paducah from
November 18, 2006 until January 20, 2007 quiltmuseum.org
Secondly, from The University of Northern Iowa, Dr. Marybeth C.
Stalp, Assistant Professor of Sociology seeks funding for her
manuscript, “Quilting: The Fabric of Evryday Life”. Our guild will
pay for the color images in this work. This work attempts to
document: the process of quilting and the people who do it, a look at
quilting as it exists outside of the United States, and describe a culture
clearly produced and dominated by women. Progress is continuing
with a deadline for completion of December 2006.
Both the CD and manuscription will be available in our library as
soon as possible. The Quilter’s Guild of Dallas, Iinc. receives
recognition from these organizations and is associated with these
quilt-related projets forever! For prior listings of grants, our website
describes the funding in the past years, along with an application for
the future.

In order to keep abreast of our Guild’s programs, I have
ordered books by scheduled speakers. These two books
relate to the speakers for September and October.
In September, Barb Vlack will speak and teach on the
quilt software program Electric Quilt. She published a
book in 1999 called EQ4 Magic, which I have purchased,
even though Barb will be discussing the newer version,
EQ5. Presumably she will be able to bring readers along
on the changes.
Help Wanted
Do you have newsletter experience (preferably with
PageMaker)? The Quilter’s Guild of Dallas can use
your talents. If your schedule is flexible the last
week of each month, please contact Val Hubbard,

October’s speaker, Laura Wasilowski, is the author of
Fusing Fun; Fast and Fearless Art Quilts. This book, with
full-color photographs, offers general instructions on
Laura’s fusing technique, directions for seven wall-size
projects, and a photo gallery for inspiration.
I hope these books will help increase members’
enjoyment of Guild programs.

ask me to go ask if I could help. She was such a mom
right to the end when she left her and and 15 year old
children.
We are so lucky that we have had the
families and friends that we have to be here in a great
organization celebrating what we love to do. I am writing
this message on the morning of July 4th so that gives us
just another reason to thank our lucky stars ... don’t get
me started on that one. We are so lucky.

Pieceful Friends Friendship Group
About three years ago, the Quilters Unique Friendship Group was
bursting its seams. It had grown too large to easily meet in members’
homes, so they capped the group at 30. In order to offer an alternative to quilters in the Richardson area, a handful of Quilters Unique
members formed a new group and named it Pieceful Friends. At first
there were only five. It was a quiet sit-n-sew gathering, with no real
agenda. Since then the group has grown to 12 - and still has no
agenda!
Pieceful Friends meets in home the second Tuesday evening of
every month. The program is to sit and do handwork, cut fabric or
just flip through old quilter magazines and chat. If someone arrives
with nothing to do, Rhonda Anderson always offers something to
busy those idle hands, like cutting scraps or sewing binding for
Covers for Kids.
This past April, the group ventured on their first weekend together
to Le Retreat in Gainsville. Yup, that’s the same Gainesville that was
in the news recently for having had a terrible Spring hailstorm. And it
was - of course- the very weekend of the Pieceful Friends retreat!
Windows were shattered, winds howled, and all watched for tornadoes. Other than that; however, and some severly damaged cars, it
was a weekend enjoyed by all. Even in a storm, you know, there’s
something warm and peaceful about sewing with friends.

Meeting Policies & Procedures
Member Check-in: When you come to a general guild meeting,
please remember to stop at the membership table and get your door
prize ticket. These tickets are used to keep a tally of our attendance
numbers and to select the door prize winners.
Membership Cards: Membership cards must be shown (and
preferably worn) at each meeting. If you forget your card, a $.50
fee is charged and donated to the library fund. If you have lost your
card or your nametag sleeve and wish to purchase a new one, they
are available for $1.00 each at the general guild meetings. You can
find your membership number in the upper right corner of your mailing
label. Please write your number on your membership card.
Guest Policy: We encourage and welcome guests and visitors at
our general meetings. There is a $5.00 guest fee for non-members
attending any meeting hosting an out-of-town speaker.

AUGUST PROGRAM

August Quilters of Gee’s Bend
On August 3, 2006, the Quilter’s Guild of Dallas
welcomes a group of quilters from Gee’s Bend,
Alabama. The small rural community known as Gee’s
Bend is named after Joseph Gee, the first white man to
stake a claim therein the early 1800s. In 1850, the Gee
family sold the plantation to Mark Pettway. After the
Civil War, the freed slaves took the name Pettway and
continued to work the land as tenant farmers, eventually
purchasing farms from the federal government in the
1940s.
In 2003, all the living quilters of Gee’s Bend (more
than fifty women), founded the Gee’s Bend Quilt
Collective. The Collective is owned and operated by the
women of Gee’s Bend and serves as the exclusive
means of selling and marketing their quilts.
In June, a “sequel” to the blockbuster Gee’s Bend
exhibit, entitled “Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the
Quilt” opens at the Museum of Fine Arts – Houston
(www.MFAH.org) and runs through September 4, 2006
before embarking on its’ own nationwide tour.

2007 AQS Challenge

“Under the Magnifying Glass”
As most of you know, each year the American Quilter’s
Society holds the Ultimate Guild Challenge in which quilt
guilds are invited to compete to win $5,000. Even though
the competition is stiff, our guild has a lot of talent. We
have won it before and we can win it again! This year’s
theme, Under the Magnifying Glass, will stir your creative
juices.

Maybe you’ve watched the demonstrations of The Electric
Quilt software at quilt shows or at your favorite quilt shop.
We have only two rules this year:
Perhaps you’ve even purchased it, taken it home and
installed it on your computer. But then panic sets in, as
1. Incorporate the theme “Under the Magnifying Glass”.
you aren’t quite sure what to do with it.
2. Quilt must be 54” in width by 42” in height.
Well, we have the answer for you! Our September
speaker/teacher is Barb Vlack – acknowledged as one of
the leading EQ5 authorities in the country! Ms. Vlack will
be lecturing about the software and its’ capabilities during
the meeting, then teaching two hands-on classes on Friday
and Saturday following the lecture.

Laura is one of the “standup comediennes” of the quilting
world. A co-founder of “The Chicago School of Fusing,” she
makes up funny songs to accompany her lecture –
keeping you in stitches!
Lecture: So Many Chickens, So Little Time: Confessions
of a Serial Quilter
We have Judy Kriehn to thank for this intriguing theme.
Under the Magnifying Glass evokes all sorts of images
from the scientific (drop of water, hairs on a caterpillar’s
leg, skin cells) to the inspirational (flower petals, snow
flake, a butterfly’s wing, grandchild’s hand). Turn
commonplace items into the spectacular!
The Ultimate Guild Challenge is a separate show
category with its own prize money and all entrants must be
Guild members. More details will follow in future
newsletters.
Now, get out that magnifying glass and start inspecting
everyday items in your world.
