Guild Nights

Mon. Sept. 16th
Mon. Oct. 21st
Legendary Sue Patten
told us the story of her
adventures becoming a longarm quilter. She has a
unique style that she’s had a
lot of fun developing. Sue
create’s her own beautiful
designs and free motion
quilts with vivid threads.
She takes this thread
painting to a new level and
uses variegated thread in a
controlled way to create
fanciful quilts. And she
wears great boots!

CANADIAN QUILTERS’ ASSOCIATION AND QUILT CANADA 2014
Quilters Cupboard Plans a 2-Day bus trip
This is a good way to make the trip with a gang, you’ll get
to see the show and they’ve got other surprises planned.
Patcher’s 1-Day Bus Trip Saturday June 14th
One of the activities the guild has planned for this year is
a coach bus trip to Quilt Canada. This will be a day trip
and the cost is $50.00. This includes your admission
ticket. Please check the Quilt Canada site for
information on the show. There is a juried quilt show and
Trend-Tex challenge quilts will be displayed. I will try to
get paper brochures about the show for those who do not
have internet access. It will be an excellent show, that you
don’t want to miss.
To reserve your seat on the bus payment is
required. Please invite a friend, mother, sister
or quilting friend. We are going to offer this
trip to neighbouring guilds as well. I will
have more information available at the
February guild meeting.

Community Outreach
The "Adoption Centre" is full
now. Thanks to everyone who
donated orphan blocks. This
month we have kitted up loads
of project bags for everybody to
take home complete with ideas
on what you might make. There
are bags with blocks to make
small projects like table runners
or modern baby blankets, bags
with a few more blocks to make
lap quilts or throws for our
seniors at Community Care,
and there are bags packed full
of gorgeous blocks donated by
Sue Carmichael from recent
"Quilt for the Cure" efforts
that would be perfect for
Lastly, here's a shout out to
those who love to practice their
quilting without needing to
piece; we have projects ready to
sandwich, quilt and bind.
Thanks to everyone for all the
effort, time and creativity that
goes into each of our donations.

25 years of “Stitching
Together”
The guild has reached a
milestone, celebrating its 25th
anniversary! The date of the
first meeting was October 1989.
Ten women met at Daisy’s
Fabric and formed the Port
Perry Patchers. Daisy’s was in
the back section of Luke’s
Country Store, in lovely
downtown Port Perry. Over the

next year or so they had a
constitution, a small library
and a newsletter. The
constitution continues to be a
great guild line for all
executive members. We
should be thankful these
women knew the key to a
successful organization is
communication. They strived
to make the guild inclusive
and anything they did was for
the benefit to all members.
Sounds like what makes a
good marriage!
To celebrate this special year
we will reminisce and also
look to the future. I don’ t
think any of the original 10
women could have guessed
how “huge” quilting would
become. What direction will
it take over the next 25 years?
FEBRUARY GUEST SPEAKER
MARTHA SCHELLINGERHOUD
For the February meeting we have a
wonderful, and informative trunk show
from Martha Schellingerhoud! Come and
find out how to get those quilts done on
your regular old sewing machine! Martha
will be doing a trunk show featuring
approximately 30 of the 80 quilts she has
made during her quilting career. You will
be taken on a journey of all of Martha’s
noteworthy quilt projects over the years.
This journey will be in chronological order
allowing you to observe the development in
her skills. Included in Martha’s presentation
will be her collection of miniature quilts and
a brief demonstration outlining her
technique of quilting full size bed quilts on a
regular household machine. www.Marthaschellingerhoudquilts.com
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Patchers, This wicked cold weather seems to just keep going and
going and going. This weekend is Ground Hog Day and if
Whiarton Willy sees his shadow I will seek him out and
make him change his mind! I googled the origins of this
much anticipated day and found this English poem about
the 2nd of February:
If Candle mas be fair and bright,Winter has another
flight. If Candle mas brings clouds and
rain, Winter will not come again.
I am hoping for a cloudy day. Bad weather is the best
excuse to go to my quilt studio and play with my new
panels purchased from Sue Patten last month. I have had
several comments from our members on how fantastic Sue
was. I loved her candour, her humour, not to mention her
boots, and am in awe of her talent. It is not everyday that
we meet artists who are driven by the need to create, and
not everyday that we get such a close up and personal look
at the incredible pieces she has made. So it's onward we
move into February. "Celebrate You" is around the corner,
Valentine's Day is coming, Family Day too. We have a
new speaker lined up for the 24th.
See you then!
