A diversified quilt instructor since 1988, Sue Rasmussen loves to inspire her class participants to
stretch beyond traditional confinements through
quick methods of paper foundation piecing, machine pieced landscapes and beautiful, intricate
machine quilting.
Sue admits that the most gratifying aspects of
teaching are the interaction with each student,
sharing her extensive knowledge of quilting and
the delight of watching students' faces light up in her class. "There is nothing
more gratifying than seeing quilts from my students who are employing one of
my techniques or ideas, and have continued to grow as quilters because of
something they learned in my class!"
Sue has degrees in Textile Sciences and Agricultural Economics from University of California, Davis and has produced an extensive and varied body of
work, including hundreds of quilts, quilt art and quilted clothing, many of which
are nationally exhibited.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER
.“What
Odette Osantowski [email protected] 949-412-4988
is your responsibility to the Guild?”
As we are nearing November Fest”, our major fundraiser for the year, it brings me to the
question, “What is my responsibility to the Guild”?
When I joined a quilters guild in 2005 (yes, I’m a newbie) I joined to learn to be a better
quilter and learn from the experts. I wanted to belong to a group that was cut from the
same cloth, sharing the same passion for fabric, sewing, color, and beauty. I attended
meetings, took workshops, entered quilts in the show, and volunteered for a few things. Odette Osantowski
Little did I know what it takes to run a guild until I became part of the Board. The wonderful speakers we hear from each month, the workshops provided to learn new techniques, the support of
the philanthropy activities, and the facilities we use each month, COST MONEY. Yes, we pay dues each
year, but that does not cover all the activities through the year.
There are 45 members of the guild that have agreed to serve on the executive board or standing committees. These members support the organization so we have a place to meet, speakers to lecture, workshops
to participate in, food to eat, projects to work on, check-in of members, newsletter published, and many more
behind the scenes duties.
Why am I mentioning all this? Well, the 4th Saturday in October is “Make a Difference Day”. This is a national day devoted to helping others by doing volunteer work. We need everyone to step up and support our
guild. How can you make a difference? Volunteer for a position, donate something to the Fest, buy lots of
raffle tickets for Monthly Mini and at our November Fest, bid on the live auction, bring a friend to the November Fest, and support the activities of the guild. If you don’t feel you can take on major responsibilities, ask a
board member if there is anything you can do to help.
WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT
THANK YOU---THANK YOU---THANK YOU
The Wounded Warrior Project was started to send quilts to warm our wounded soldiers who are in intensive care
in Afghanistan or when they are flown back to the States for further medical attention. THE LABEL ATTACHED
TO EVERY QUILT SAID “This quilt was made with love and caring to comfort you as you recover from your injuries. We are grateful for the sacrifices you have made and the courage you have shown to preserve our Freedoms here at home.”
We joined the project in July 2011 under Susie Russell’s leadership. Kathy Bellamy continued the project in
2012 and for the last several years, Mary Freedman has taken the project under her wing and continued to support the needs of the soldiers. During this time the guild has donated 525+ quilts to the Wounded Warrior Project.
The need for quilts for the soldiers in Afghanistan has changed and we will be closing our Wounded Warrior Project participation for now.
A thank you is given to Susie Russell, Kathy Bellamy, and Mary Freedman for providing the guidance, leadership, and hours to complete, package, and organize the shipment of these quilts. A special thank you is given to
Mary Freedman for chairing this committee for the last 3 years and for providing her spacious sewing room.
Many of the guild members have been consistent with helping in this project. These people include: Joann
Bishop, Nancy Burch, Sheri Hill, Vicki Janis, Jane Salem, Jeanne Tavasci, Carmelle Spruill, Janice Elliott,
Jan Kerr, Virginia Keenan, Joan Orris, and Carol Whiteside.
Special thanks all the members who supported this project through assembling the kits, making blocks, putting
the blocks together, donating batting, etc. To me the saying: “It takes a village” means “It takes a guild to make a
project successful”.

Sue Rasmussen Curved Paper Pieced Flying Geese
Sue will present her workshop “Curved Flying Geese” on October 14. I know
you are like me and have watched the free
flying geese in the sky; my “straight nose-totail-feather” flying geese just don’t capture
that freedom and flight. Sue will teach us
how to make OUR geese fly! The technique
is paper piecing, so some experience is requested.
Beginning with the October Workshop with
Sue Rasmussen, we will be in our NEW
CLASSROOM: San Juan Mobile Estates,
32302 Alipaz Street (turn South from Del
Obispo Street, about 1/2 mile down on left
hand side),San Juan Capistrano
There are no workshops in November or
December, so check the newsletter next month
for info on the fun and useful classes in 2016.

MONTHLY MINI
Becky McDaniel [email protected] 949-362-9911
This month’s Monthly Mini, “Baskets of Flowers” was donated by Debrah Stanley, a friend of Victoria Crayne’s.
This mini is beautifully done with hand appliqué, machine embroidery, very detailed machine quilting, and has a
sleeve ready for hanging on the wall of
the lucky winner.
The September Mini, “Blue Cake Stand”
37.3" x 37.5".,made by Toni Mahoney, a
friend of the guild, was won by new member
Judy Kamman.
FRIENDSHIP GROUPS
Monica Shafer [email protected] 949-362-5524
Maggie Bell [email protected] 949–488-3011
Inspired by the work of scrap quilter Bonnie Hunter, a new friendship group is forming. People interested in busting their stash, swapping fabric and learning how to make sense out of
different colors, patterns and blocks can join this group. Details are still being worked out,
but if you’re interested, call or email Monica.
Another new start-up is the new EPP, or English Paper Piecing group. If you may have
heard of The New Hexagon – Millefiore Quilt-Along, it’s English Paper Piecing, on a big
scale. Grandmother’s Flower Garden is an EPP project. Julie Vlahos made one with
Kaffe Fassett fabrics that is stunning! Details forthcoming, call or email for more info.

Women of the Bible is a new group that has monthly projects that contain quilt blocks, Bible
passages and journaling of personal reflections. Mary Mulcahey has details:
[email protected], 949-951-2066.
A group that meets in San Clemente needs new members. They meet once a month in the
home of one of the members, and after they sew and visit, they go to lunch nearby. If this
sounds like a good fit for you, contact Monica.

SAN CLEMENTE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
119 AVENIDA DE LA ESTRELLA IN SAN CLEMENTE
+ What an amazing guild we have!! Over 35 quilts are being donated to our Veterans. Mary Freedman’s
Wounded Warrior group donated 21 beautiful red, white, and blue quilts, which we added to our collection
with masculine themes. We also gave 18 quilts to Carol Whiteside and Mary Jane Bellamy for a January
baby shower sponsored by San Clemente Military Family Outreach.
+ Several people worked with Barbara Seidel, cutting fabric donated by Don Bloyer from Nancy’s overwhelming stash. Baby/sibling quilt kits have been put together and will be available on a sign out basis at the
October guild meeting. The 17 kits will include directions and pre-cut fabric. We hope to have quilt kits
available for several months in order to augment Philanthropy's donations to the Marine Baby Shower in
April. Your help in fulfilling this request for sibling quilts will be greatly appreciated.
+ In addition to the baby/sibling kits, we have lots of binding and quilting to get done, so stop by and select a
project!
+ Join us, October 21, for our next Stashbuster meeting. There is plenty to do: sew on your own philanthropy
project or ours; prepare backs, batting and binding; cut kits; go through our stash for fabric to use in a philanthropy project. Bring your lunch. We will provide water and a yummy dessert.
+ SMALL ITEMS: Our host church is grateful for the small toiletries and non-perishable food items we deliver
each month.

Nancy Bloyer Memorial Fund Scholarship for Guide Dogs for the Blind.
One of the many enduring traits of our late friend Nancy Bloyer was her willingness to give back to her
friends, organizations and society. We all enjoyed her wonderful puppies in training when they accompanied her to our Surfside Quilters Guild meetings. Part of her legacy is the continuing scholarship fund for
students who also raise puppies for this worthwhile cause. Here is a winning essay from one of the scholarship winners this year. http://guidedogs.blogspot.com/2015/09/nancy-bloyer-memorial-fund-scholarship.html
Our guild and many members made donations to the fund, which is ongoing. Connect with the organization’s donation page at http://www.guidedogs.com/site/PageServer?pagename=help_donate_contributions
Be sure to indicate your donation is for the Nancy Bloyer Fund.

This month, we are doing 2 blocks, 1 & 11. Again, since we are not doing the blocks in order, you
will need to label your blocks when you finish them. As with all of the blocks you have already done,
sew the pieces together in numerical order working in sections where indicated. *I have added
pressing directions because it will help when the blocks are put together. This affects your “B”
pieces. While we work on the odd-numbered blocks, press away from “B”.

SHOW & TELL Vickie Janis [email protected] 949-842-6089
Joan Orris [email protected]
All right, ladies. Finish your Halloween projects and bring your fall quilt projects for
show and tell. I LOVE HALLOWEEN and crocheted a Minion hat for my grandson,
James. In May, he got his bib overalls and yellow tee shirt ready for trick and
treat. There is a giant blow up of a Minion pirate at Lowes that would be so much fun
for our new house, but we only had two trick or treaters last year.
Sue Rasmussen is our speaker this month. Do you have any
quilts made in her classes to share?
Vickie Janis
The September show and tell had 20 people showing 24
items. We ran out of binder clips due to so many fun things
to share.
Don't forget to wear your Halloween tees and jackets. What
will YOU be for Halloween? Vickie

Thank you to everyone who shared a treat in September. We had a super
variety of goodies, something for everyone. Ladies with birthdays in October, it is your chance to share a special treat with
your fellow quilters.
Be sure to put your name in the drawing if you bring a
treat (even if it is not your birthday month) and you
may win the table decoration. Emily LaMond won the
September flowers. The Hospitality ladies would also
like to thank Marjie Butterworth for stepping in to help
us when we need her most.

“Scrappy Star Quilt” Becky McDaniel The
first time she made this quilt was for her son,
23 years ago. Now she has made it for a
little boy who was adopted a couple years
ago. She had made quilts for his sisters and
he asked for a star quilt. Many of the fabrics
were scraps from her son’s quilt - 23 years
ago.
Susie Russell’s quilt “Summer Flowers” on the left. Joann
Bishop’s quilt “Betsy’s Garden” on the right.
Susie decided to make her quilt after seeing Joann’s blocks and
chose bright, happy colors for the flowers which is a departure
from the pastels she usually uses. The flowers are fossil fern
fabrics by Benartex. The quilt is hand appliqued and hand
quilted,
Joann made her quilt as a block-of-the-month project and it did
take a year. The pattern is from Lori Smith. It is hand appliqued
and hand quilted.
Hiroko Moriwaki showed two projects from Rami Kim
workshops at BCQG. The front of the vest was Rami
Kim’s design, but Hiroko designed the back and added
her family crest.
The bag shows Hexagon Chopkey, Biscuit Chopkey, Harlequin Tucks and North American Hand Smocking. She
added an outside pocket and her family crest.
11
Two machine appliqued quilts by Betty Collins. On the left is “Beads” from a pattern by American Jane. On the
right is “Raining Cats & Dogs” which took her about three years to complete. Both are machine quilted by Betty.
Two quilts by Sheryl Smith-Bailey. On the left is a block-of-the-week pattern by Lisa Bonjean of Primitive Gatherings. Sheryl changed the fabrics to use a brighter background and used her own hand-dyed wools. The embroidery really makes this small quilt. On the right is “Posies” started in a Jan Hirth class. Sheryl decided to
trapunto the petals and it took so long she put it away. She finally finished this UFO.
12
“Asian Blooms” Mary Mulcahey made this from
Cozy Quilt’s Dresden Blooms pattern. She saw
it in Candy’s Quiltworks done in Asian fabrics
and just had to do it. She got the roll of Asian
fabric strips from a vendor specializing in Asian
fabrics at Road to California.
“Many Trips Around the World” Roni Trehy started this quilt
three years ago for her daughter, Linda. After running short
of fabric to match, she found some batik fabric to do the
ribbon border. She plans to give it to Linda on her October
birthday, three years late. Quilted using Qbot long arm
design. It is a reversible quilt.
Odette
Osantowski
shows the bag
she made in
Rami Kim’s
workshop several years ago.
“Milestones” (double sided) made by
Marilyn Egler (a guest) for her great nephew Brett for reaching the milestones
of: graduating from high school, reaching
18 years of age, and achieving the Eagle
Scout badge.
Quilted by Karen at Cosmic Quilting.
13
Nancy Ota showed pieces she made in Del Thomas’
workshop. She says, “It was fun making small projects.
No pressure, no problem with failures. I had some
small hand-dyed pieces from a Melody Johnson workshop taken many years ago. One became a nametag,
one became a birthday card, the other two have no
purpose. It was good to use a couple obi from my
stash for the backsides of two of them.
“Time” Carol Hughes made this quilt for her mom
who would be 106 years on August 12. She says,
“You know how our Moms always said things that
hang with us forever. Mom would say, ‘There’s a time
for all of life’s events….’”
“Burgoyne Surrounded” Jan Hirth. Jan made this
quilt from a Burgoyne Surrounded pattern in an American Patchwork and Quilting magazine. She used
scraps from her stash. Machine quilted by Jan on her
home machine.
