CRAFTING A LEGACY
African Folklore Embroidery is a unique art
form, which involves a needle, vividly colored
threads, and light patterns on black squares of
cloth. According to Leora Raikin, president of
African Folklore Embroidery, this activity
originated in Southern Africa. Raikin
introduced the craft to the United States in
January of 2003. Experienced needle workers
and beginners will enjoy this needlecraft
activity. Leora claims what makes this craft so
fun are the rules. Rule #1 whatever color you
choose is the right color. Rule #2 stitches do not
need to be perfect. Rule #3 have fun. What is
especially great about her workshops will be
the supply list – scissors. Leora will supply
everything else in her prepackaged kits for only
$25.

SMALL PROJECTS
FOR SMALL SPACES
I love to make large, traditional quilts,
but I’m running out of room. It was so
much fun to work with Yvonne Porcella
and Ellen Edith, and create projects for
small spaces. Both women taught
workshops focused on building creative
confidence. Yvonne had her crazy (self?)
portraits, and Ellen, her whimsical family
memories. Both instructors made it easy
to have fun and laugh at ourselves. Ellen
showed us how simple it is to make
lettering to add to our quilts. There is also
a satisfaction in completing something on
that scale, and not ending up with another
UFO.
After these workshops, I’m much more
likely to make something in that style for
a gift or special occasion. Maybe a gift
for a Secret Sister or a donation to the
Holiday auction? BCQG workshops have
so much to offer for the price!

and here is what you will do:
COLOR: Yellow background. You can use polka
dots, batiks, stripes, or any fabric that reads yellow
PATTERN: Flowers made with bright fabric.
You can put on petals, leaves and stems but no
bugs, snails, snakes, etc. We want the background
of the quilt to be blocks of bright flowers on yellow fabric.
DIMENSION: Your blocks must measure 5 ½‖
unfinished, or 5‖ finished.
If appliquéing, please make your block larger.
DO NOT TRIM YOUR BLOCK
Please sign your block with your first and last
name making sure that you do not sign within the
outer ¼‖ seam allowance.
Blocks must be turned in at the

SECRET SISTERS
If you notice any fancy new name
tags at Guild this month it will
most likely be due to the Sister’s
fun workshop on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon in
May with Sue Zaradnik @ A Time To Sew. Call
the Sister’s moms if you want to sign up for Award
Winning Yo-Yoer Victoria Crayne’s Sunday in
June Yo-Yo Workshop. Victoria used a yo-yo
memory album to help elderly women tell their stories. Isn’t that nifty?
Every sister has a loving heart & knows how to
have a good time! No housework, childcare, TV
clickers or grumping is allowed at their shindigs.
They are way too busy practicing random acts of
kindness, laughing, sharing, chattering, sewing,
stashing & partying. They also know how to tackle
those UFO’s at their once a month six hour Sew-In.
They are amazing women. They can actually talk,
sew, nibble and make friends at the same time!

Orangewood Children’s Home received a donation of 47 quilts from Beach Cities Philanthropy in April. Thank you to all who participated in our effort to support this worthy charity.
Philanthropy has several quilts which would be
appropriate for charity auctions. I have contacted the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation to offer a quilt. Anyone who knows a charity in need of an auction quilt can contact me by
email or phone.

WORKSHOPS
One important benefit of membership in the
Beach Cities Quilters Guild is being able to take
a workshop from a nationally known quilter for a
very reasonable cost. In the next few months, we
have workshop opportunities that cannot be
matched at any of the big quilt shows. Support
your guild and learn more about all aspects of
quilting. The workshops are planned especially
for you, so sign up and take advantage of the
small classes and low fees.
In June, Leora Raikin will teach us about African
Folkloric Embroidery. The class is only $30.00
and a kit, with all the materials you need to make
a wall hanging or a pillow is only $25.00.
There is room in both Friday and Saturday workshops -June 12 and 13.
July workshops will feature Lynda Milligan and
Nancy Smith, who have published more than 54
quilting books.

MONTHLY MINI
Regina has always had a love for anything to do
with sewing. She can remember sewing with her
mother as young as 6 or 7 years old. Under the
guidance of two aunts who were quilters, she
would watch them sit for hours cutting out templates and hand sewing quilts together. Her love
of quilting comes from them. She is very thankful that by the time she took up the hobby templates were optional and machine sewing was in!

Of all the quilting tools Regina has collected in
the last few years she would like to say that her
best was to have joined this guild, as it gives her
great pleasure and inspiration being a part of such
a wonderful group of people.

BOUNTIFUL BAGS
BCQG member Holly Nelson was hoping for guild
members to help her complete work for her Girl
Scout Silver Award by sewing at least 30 coloring
book bags. Much to her surprise, she received 142
bags, complete with coloring books and crayons!
The children of Orangewood Children’s Home will
be delighted with these fun, happy bags. We’re so
proud of Holly, who with the help of her mother
Rhonda Nelson, printed patterns and cut and
assembled kits for all these bags from philanthropy
fabric. Way to go, Beach Cities guild members, and
congratulations Holly!
