Members Showcase.
We are featuring three members this year. Diana
O’Connor, member #1674, will tell us how her
quilting journey has brought her to where she is
now. We all know her from her philanthropy
involvement and look forward to learning more
about Diana.
Margie Bushaw, member #928, and Kathy
Chevalier, member #1269, will share how they have
started out as conventional quilters and evolved
into being art quilters and fabric dyers. Margie and
Kathy are members of the Family Jewels friendship
group whose founding members include Juin
Foresman. We’re looking forward to these

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
As someone who sews, what do
you want to be called?
A Seamstress? A Sewer? Sewist?
Crafter?
I've been hearing "Sewist" more and
more often. Apparently the word is
the modern take on quilting… it
combines SEW + ARTIST.
Hmmm…. I still think that perhaps
I'm a quilter! What about you?
Speaking of counting….If I'm right, I
just passed the "half-way" mark as
your President! Wow…. I'm still so
overwhelmed with our members.
Not only the level of your quilting
skills and knowledge, but the level
of your kindness, friendship, and
willingness to help. Thank you for
your support and participation.
~Jean
We had a wonderful March meeting
with Gwen Marston. I think I could
have listened to her for hours! For
those of you who didn't take a
workshop with her, you missed so
much fun. I took the Friday class
and made "baskets!" I'm happy to
report that as of now…. ((28 hours
later)….I have 36 baskets and
counting… I had to stop and take a
break an come upstairs to write this
newsletter article, but by the end of
the night, I'm hoping for 50!

NICU blankets went to the Saddleback Hospital Neo-Natal Unit.
We have been blessed with numerous donations this month, both quilts and fabric. Fabric has
come from members, neighbors and friends of members, plus a huge box of mostly Moda fabric from
Barri Gaudet, owner of a shop in June Lake, CA, called Bareroots. She will be the speaker at the
April Tea, so be sure to thank her when you meet her.
Next Philanthropy Sewing Day: Monday, April 1st at Sewing Party, from 10 until 4. As always,
join us for all of the day or as much as works into your schedule. We will be sewing, but plan to cut
kits for kids at the May Sewing Day.

PRESIDENT’S QUILT 2013
It's that time of year when we the guild members start our "thank you
quilt" for Jean Impey our "Totally Awesome President".
It's very important to Jean that everyone makes a block for her quilt.
Please use only the fabric provided. Instructions with details follow in
this newsletter.
President’s Quilt Instuctions
It’s that time of the year when we start the process to honor our acting President, Jean Impey, for all her
hard work by making her a fabulous quilt. Jean has chosen a “Vintage Halloween” theme. Background
fabrics in different pumpkin oranges, black and grays will be available for you to pick up at the guild
meetings in March, April, and May. Jean would love to have a variety of vintage frightful images on her
quilt.
Guidelines:
Dimensions: Finished size will be 5” x 5”. Your block should measure at least 5.5” x 5.5” or larger
unfinished. The guild is providing a 7 inch square. We will trim your block for you after it is turned in.
Please do not trim it yourself. But… keep your design within a 5” square.
Colors: No bright colors. Muted tones preferred. Jean would like this to look like an old fashioned
Halloween picture.
Design: All types of Halloween motifs, please. They can be pieced, appliquéd, paper-pieced,
embroidered, etc. No modern fabrics of any kind. If you have a question, give me a call. Or, Google;
Vintage Halloween, and look at the images. Please feel free to embellish your block, but if you are going
to add anything that might be breakable, such as beads, etc., put it in a baggie and pin it to your block.
The quilt will be rolled on a frame for hand quilting, so please take that into consideration.
Ideas; Black cats, jack-o-lanterns, bats, skeletons, witches, witch hats, trick-or-treaters, ghosts.
The final deadline to turn in your block will be the June 13th meeting. You can
also mail your block to my home. Or bring it to my home. My address is in the directory.
Please make sure that you sign your block. It is best to sign next to your design so that it does not get cut
off when we trim your block and sew it together.
If you have any questions, please call me at (949) 458-2969 or email at [email protected]
Have fun and be creative. Thank you.
Sandy Corbin, Past President
Contact me (Sandy Corbin) if you missed guild and would like to pick a
square up from me. 949-637-5450
I sincerely hope that everyone will participate.
Thank you.

Whisper Challenge
CAN YOU KEEPT A SECRET??
SHHHH………..WHISPER CHALLENGE IS COMING!
Did you ever play “telephone” when you were little? Remember how much
fun it was to hear the last person’s message and then here the sentence that
started it all. Well, we’re going to create a new challenge based on that
game. Those who sign up will be divided into groups of four. The first
person will create in one month (it doesn’t have to be finished) a quilt top
based on a photo or painting that inspired them. The second person will not
see the painting but will only get the little quilt (top). That will inspire them
by the theme, the color, by any element of the quilt---they will create a
quilt. The person in month 3 will only receive the 2nd person’s quilt. Can
you see where this is going?
There is no size, there is no requirement to finish, there is nothing to buy.
This should be just fun. The only requirement is that you show up at the
October guild meeting with whatever you have finished. It will be so much
fun to see what the original painting or photo that ended with the last
person’s quilt.
Further details will be provided at the April meeting and sign-ups will begin
in May. Call Elaine Pappas-Puckett at 831-1072 for details.

Monthly Mini
Lupe Maher was the lucky winner of the March
Monthly Mini, made and contributed by Marian
Mapes. Marian started quilting in 2001 and
immediately became active in Beach Cities. She
was on the board for nine years and served as
president in 2008-2009. She has no more room
for large quilts, so she’s started making wall
hangings for her home and office. She lives in
Dana Point and loves all things beach related.
She saw this banner in a magazine and had to
make it. It now has a good home with Lupe!
