Educational Services
Educational Services has experienced an excellent year! Since the launch of the
Core Training Program in Alzheimer Care in March 2012, 100 hours of training (25
workshops from March to November) were completed throughout the island of
Montreal.
In addition, we brought together a knowledgeable and skilled team of four trainers
prepared to expand our training sessions to professionals working in Alzheimer
care.
We encourage individuals and organizations to continue to sign-up for our training programs in 2013. As more professionals
(social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, PABs, etc) are trained in this person-centred approach to care, the quality of
life of people with dementia, whether they live at home or in a residence , will improve. Education results in a winning scenario
for all concerned, people living with the disease, their families and those that care for them.
For more information contact: 514 369-0800 ext. 230 or [email protected].

Alzheimer’s on the Rise : A New Reality
Worldwide, Alzheimer’s disease is on the rise. It is estimated that by 2030, nearly
66 million people will be living with the diagnosis. The impact of the disease will
also forever change the lives of the families and friends of those diagnosed. Lisa
Hirsch was inspired to share her story on her BlogSpot My Mom, My Hero. Lisa
posted: I thought about my own mom, and wondered what at moments does she
feel? Feelings that she can no longer really express, because the moment after
they are felt, they just seem to vanish.
Photo : Santé Log
Maybe deep down what I really want is for my mom to be able to hold me and squeeze me and tell me that
everything will be alright. As we know life does not go backwards and my feelings of wanting to be protected and cuddled by
mom can no longer exist. So as each day goes by, I can hold on to all that we have left and remember all the special moments
of my childhood.’’ Her testimony confirms the need for support by others for individuals living with dementia, at the same time
the importance of support for those providing the care.

Gene Linking Cataracts and Alzheimer’s Disease Identified
A recent study from the Boston University School of Medicine discovered
significant correlation between a quantitative measure of cortical cataract and
several Alzheimer's disease-related measures of brain degeneration. In particular,
volume of the temporal horn which is a brain structure that is progressively
enlarged in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Another strong correlation between
cortical cataract formation and poorer performance on several cognitive tests
administered at the time of the MRI scan, further supports this link.

Scientists Discover Gene Behind Rare Disorders
Montreal researchers that are part of an international team discovered a genetic
defect that could trigger a group of rare genetic diseases for newborns. This
discovery could also help the team to better understand other diseases such as
Alzheimer’s. Scientists that work at the Neuro, the centre of neuroscience mission
part of the McGill University Health Care, collaborated with a team from Oxford
University. The identified gene, the RMND1, is responsible for the sequencing of a
protein that plays an important role within the mitochondria.

On September 18, the Society in partnership with the Atwater Library and
Computer Centre launched the first Alzheimer Café in Quebec. More than 50
people took part at this event. We are very proud to mention that newspapers
including The Gazette and The Westmount Independent published an article to
salute this iniative. We are also pleased to invite you to the next Alzheimer Café
celebrating the Holidays season, which will be held on Tuesday, December 18 from
1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Atwater Library and Computer Centre located at 1200,
Avenue Atwater in Westmount.
Our hope is that with the proven success of this pilot project, we will be able to continue to establish partnerships in order to
be able to present a variety of topics related to dementia to the French and English communities within the island of
Montreal. For more information, please contact Jessica Seidman at (514) 369-0800 ext. 231 or by email:

Words to
Alzheimer’s Awareness Month
A cure for dementia is yet to be found, but quality of life after diagnosis is possible.
The following is the testimony of a caregiver that expresses the essence of
Awareness Month: to diminish the stigma and facilitate better community support.
M. is a caregiver. Her husband is living with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Life has changed for M. but her priority remains to make him as happy as possible by
minimizing frustrations, facilitating opportunities and remaining realistic, she says:
‘’creativity does not die with the disease’’.
How do you define your role?
In the case of dementia, it is difficult to comprehend the entirety of the caregiving role. A characteristic less obvious to an
outsider or even to the caregiver, is that above and beyond the daily tasks there is a process of grieving taking place;
bereavement as a result of the ongoing losses experienced.
What do you find has helped you cope in your reality as a caregiver?
The discovery of a safe, understanding and supportive group. It provides an environment where there is an openness to express
the emotional impact of caregiving. It is a place where your experience can be normalized, you also have the opportunity to share
ways of coping and gain perspective from one another. I needed to seek out an outlet other than my own existing personal and
social entourage to share what I was going through.
How have you adapted to the circumstances?
Redefinition of what my goals are in my relationships and in my life. M has redefined her own goals in her relationship with her
husband. In order to aim for this, she recognizes that she must meet her husband where he is at the moment and to avoid pulling
him in directions that are unrealistic. Seeking personal help. She believes that caregivers have to share with each other as much
information as they can, as well with others. Overcoming isolation, M has created a mini-universe through the computer, which
she calls her “work” which allows her to define her space. Securing respite care. Caregivers often express “doing something for
me is taking away from the person I am caring for`` however, what needs to be recognized is that doing something healthy for
yourself is necessary to replenish & renew yourself in order to be able to continue to give of yourself”.
As someone directly impacted by dementia, what are your experiences with stigma?
The effects are seen in the community, it can be obvious when visiting institutions. Observing the interactions, one can see that
the community is not tolerant of those who have the diagnosis. If they understood the capabilities of the individuals and the
limitations that the disease causes, and how to help, it would diminish the stigma and facilitate better community support.
What types of changes would you like to see?
Greater awareness within the community – “Like we teach CPR to the general public, at every possible venue we could make the
public aware of the needs of people with Alzheimer’s. The greater community can help make the journey easier for the
individual and the caregiver.
What message would you like to deliver to our readers?
Protect your own space, identity & sanity – Be conscious of your role, strengths, limits, and needs. Navigating the terrain and
recognizing that the terrain will shift so if you don’t maintain your own mental, physical and emotional fitness, you will not be
able to fulfill your role as you may want to.

A word from Hugues
My name is Hugues Desrosiers and I have been attending the Art-Therapy sessions at the
Alzheimer Society of Montreal. Having a background as a retired architect and urbanist, I
wanted to offer my talent to the Society and all of those who have chosen this healthy
vocation that Art is. I try to show in my artwork a perspective of this terrible disease that we
need to fight. The Art-Therapy sessions helped me in building a personal activity and find a
way to fight Alzheimer's Disease.
The first artwork I did when I started the Art-Therapy sesions during fall was inspired by nature. I noticed while taking
walks, when leaves began to fall, the contrast between red and yellow leaves. There were more yellow leaves.
Knowing that the red leaves tend to loose their sap faster, I would imagine that the red ones were more in danger
Feuilles d’érable, Hugues Desrosiers (2012)
from the cold than the yellow leaves. This observation pushed me to see a human side by associating the red leaves to
people with Alzheimer's Disease and the yellow ones as caregivers. With my artwork I tried to represent the
impressions and the vision that someone living with Alzheimer’s might have.

Sebastien-Luc Mai, presided over an Open House and offered workshops to the public.
Students and other participants took part in a very special fundraiser, a "workout sale" which
helped raise $ 1 800 for the Alzheimer Society of Montreal.
We sincerely thank them for all their efforts.
