TEAM NEWS
Paddy McNair has received
his first senior call-up.
6
Northern Ireland go into another
difficult game buoyed by a
remarkable start to their European
Championship qualifying campaign.
A home win over the Faroes
either side of magnificent victories
in Hungary and Greece have put the
men in green in a fantastic position.
Now they go to Romania and,
for the first time, Manchester
United defender Paddy McNair is
in the squad after the 19-year-old
impressed at Old Trafford.
McNair is the only uncapped
player in Michael O’Neill’s 25-man
squad.
Defender Aaron Hughes and
striker Jamie Ward are included but
both are injury doubts for the game
in Bucharest.
McNair’s Old Trafford team-mate
Jonny Evans is out injured and
has yet to feature in the qualifying
campaign.
McNair has been brought in as
cover for Hughes, who is struggling
with an ankle injury.
“I’ve been hugely impressed with
Paddy - he’s come into a difficult
situation at Manchester United and
there is a lot of media attention,”
O’Neill said.
“The manager has come in
and spent a lot of money so it is
encouraging to see the likes of Paddy
given a chance.
“He’s played in difficult
circumstances, with the defence a bit
makeshift at times and it’s difficult
for a young player to come into that.
“But he’s acquitted himself very
well, he’s around the Manchester
United first team and I’m looking
forward to having him in the squad.”
West Bromwich Albion midfielder
Chris Brunt returns to the squad
after missing the games against
Greece and the Faroe Islands, but
Hull defender Alex Bruce has a
hamstring injury.

 Northern Ireland have won their first three games – their
best ever start to a competitive qualifying competition.
 Northern Ireland are five goals short of scoring 600
goals in all competitions including friendlies.
 Jimmy Quinn scored the second of 12 goals for
Northern Ireland, against Romania. It was one of only
two goals he netted away from Windsor Park.
 Steve Morrow won 39 caps for Northern Ireland but
scored just one goal – against Romania, in March 1994.
Chris Brunt is back
in the squad.
 Phil Gray scored six goals for Northern Ireland. Five
were in competitive games, the sixth came in a friendly
against Romania, in March 1994.
3
 Romania captain Rasvan Rat, formerly of West Ham
United, has won exactly 100 caps, reaching the century
against Finland last month.
You can find the answers on page 16.
Kyle Lafferty has scored in Northern Ireland’s

in four different countries. Name them.

HISTORY: NORTHERN
IRELAND V ROMANIA
Gheorghe Hagi was on
target against Northern
Ireland in 1984 but was
on the receiving end of
a 3-2 defeat.
There have been just four meetings between Northern
Ireland and Romania, and only two have been
competitive.
The first clashes were World Cup qualifiers ahead of
the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico.
Northern Ireland were drawn against England as well
as Romania, Finland and Turkey. They started with a 1-0
defeat in Helsinki but bounced back, in September 1984,
with a 3-2 win over Romania.
Gino Iorgulescu gave Northern Ireland a boost when
he put through his own net after just 10 minutes before
the great Gheorge Hagi replied 16 minutes later.
Norman Whiteside and Martin O’Neill put the home
side in charge and though Ion Geolgau got a goal back for
the Romanians, they finished with 10 men when defender
Michael Klein was sent-off in the closing stages.
In the return, in Bucharest, Billy Bingham’s men won
1-0 with a goal from Jimmy Quinn.
The teams met again in a friendly in March 1994
at Windsor Park and again Northern Ireland were
8
successful, winning 2-0 with goals from Steve Morrow
and Phil Gray.
The most recent clash came on neutral soil, at Soldier
Field, Chicago, and for the first time Romania won, with
goals from Mugurel Buga and Daniel Niculae within the
opening 11 minutes secured a 2-0 win.

THE MANAGERS
NORTHERN IRELAND:
MICHAEL O’NEILL
Born in Portadown, County
Armagh, O’Neill, now 43, played as
a midfielder or forward for Chimney
Corner and Coleraine before
moving to England, with Newcastle.
Next stop was Scotland where he
played for Dundee United and Hibs
before returning south to sign for
Coventry City.
Loan spells at Aberdeen and Reading followed
before he joined Wigan and, after two years he moved
to St Johnstone before spells with Portland Timbers,
Clydebank, Glentoran and Ayr United.
While at Newcastle in the 1987-1988 season he was
the club’s top goal scorer with 12 goals in the top flight,
playing alongside Paul Gascoigne amongst others.
He played for Northern Ireland at Under-21, Under-23,
B and full level, making 31 appearances and scoring four
goals.
O’Neill began management as assistant at
Cowdenbeath before becoming manager of Brechin City
in April 2006. He won the Second Division Manager of the
Month award in both December, 2007 and October, 2008.
O’Neill was released by Brechin City to join Shamrock
Rovers on December 2008 13, 2008.
He was awarded the Irish Soccer Writers’ Manager
of the Month award for July 2009 and eventually guided
Shamrock to second place in League of Ireland.
In October 2010, he guided Shamrock to the 2010
League of Ireland title, their first league championship
since 1994. O’Neill led Rovers to the 2011 Setanta Sports
Cup and then made history by being the first manager of
a League of Ireland team to reach the group stages of a
European competition.
Shamrock retained their league title in the 2011
season. O’Neill, who won the Soccer Writers Association
Personality of the Year award for 2011, was appointed
manager of Northern Ireland on December 28, 2011.
He led Northern Ireland to a vastly improved
performance in the 3-3 home draw with Finland and
O’Neill came close to his first win in Portugal, when
he was denied by a late equaliser from Heldar Postiga.
Another draw followed in November against Azerbaijan.
O’Neill finally got the victory he so wanted when
Northern Ireland claimed a famous 1-0 win over Fabio
Capello’s Russia at Windsor Park.
And in September he led Northern Ireland to a
memorable 2-1 win in Budapest against Hungary.
ROMANIA: ANGHEL
IORDANESCU
The 64-year-old from
Bucharest is his third spell as
manager of Romania and brings
a huge amount of experience
both as a player – a forward, he
represented his country of 57
occasions, scoring an impressive
21 goals – and a manager.
Regarded as one of Steaua
Bucharest’s greatest players, Iordanescu scored 155
goals for the club, a record which remains to this day.
In 1982 he left Romania to played in Greece for OFI in
Crete under head coach Ls Shannon, a former Burnley
striker from Liverpool. He returned to Steaua two
years later, as assistant, and helped the club with the
Romanian championship and the European Cup.
In 1986 he became Steaua’s manager and won
the Romania double three years in a row, while also
reaching a semi-final and final again of the European
Cup.
In 1990 he left for Cypriot team Anorthosis
Famagusta, returning to Steaua in 1992 and leading the
club to the last eight of the European Cup Winners’ Cup.
In the summer of 1993 he became Romania’s
manager for the first time and led the nation to the
World Cup finals, taking them to the quarter-finals in
the US.
Iordanescu succeeded in taking Romania to the finals
of Euro 1996 and the 1998 World Cup but resigned once
they were knocked out and accepted a similar role with
Greece.
His spell in Athens lasted a year before he accepted
a posting with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal and after a
short spell back in Romania with Rapid Bucharest but
he was sacked after just three months in charge.
Al Ain, in the UAE, was his next stop, but the national
side called again and, in 2002, he replaced Gheorghe
Hagi. After a second spell with Romania, he returned to
Saudi, with Al-Ittihad, winning the league title and Arab
Champions League. Another spell with Al Ain followed
before he announced his retirement, in 2006.
Iordanescu went into politics in 2008, becoming
a member of the Romanian Senate, with the Social
Democratic Party. On December 26, 2011, he became an
independent senator, affiliated to the National Union for
the Progress of Romania.
However, in October he came out of retirement to lead
Romania for the third time, replacing Victor Piturca.
