Potluck:
The club will be providing hamburgers, hot dogs, soda & water. Members bring a side
dish or dessert.

If you plan on gunning or shooting at any time you need a current (2012) hunting
license.

This is a Club “Hunt Day” Event
Potluck and Prizes
The team shoot is a friendly hunting day scenario. It is scored and prizes are offered to
the top 3 or 4 teams. 12 minute braces are ran for each team. Teams are chosen
randomly by drawing names from a hat that have registered for the event. Pointers and
Retrievers may work together. Each team with their dogs hunts quail for 12 minutes
(brace). 6 birds are placed in the field for the 1st brace with 4 additional birds placed for
each brace thereafter. You may shoot for yourself or have a gunner. You must have a
current hunting license if you are shooting. You may only carry 3 shells into the field.
Scoring is as follows:
●20 points per bird shot and retrieved.
It is ok if dog scoops the bird without a shot being fired. It still counts as 1 shot.
● 1 point for each ½ minute not used.
● 3 pts for each shell not used. (3 shells allowed per team member).
● Shooting or retrieving 5 birds is a disqulification.
● A team member who shoots 4 birds without getting a shell from the other handler is
disqualified.
● An attempt to flush must be made by the pointing dogs.
●To stop the clock; you need to yell time when 4 birds total have been taken by the
team.
Scoring Examples:
1. A Team shoots 3 birds in 12 minutes and uses 5 shells. The score would be as
follows:
● 20pts/bird 3x20 = 60 points ● 3 pts/shell not used 1x3 = 3 ● No points for time.
● Total Points: 63
2. 4 Birds shot using 4 shells in 6 minutes:
●80 pts for birds ● 6 points for shell not used ●12 pts for 6 minutes left over
● Total 98 pts
Heckling is allowed and encouraged!
Gun Safety Club Policy
Any member, who is found to be handling a gun in an unsafe manner, or
shooting into a safety zone, will be immediately disqualified from competition
and will lose their gunning privileges for any other club events.
No live gun ammunition is permitted after club events.
Once revoked, gunning privileges may be reinstated
1) After the member provides the Board with proof of completion of an
approved Hunter Safety Course
2) At the Board’s discretion.

SOMEONE ELSE MUST HAVE A VALID HUNTING LICENSE.

Grouse and Woodcock Shooting

If you've spent any time at all in the grouse and woodcock covers, you have likely figured out
that woodcock are easier to hit than ruffed
grouse. But how much easier?
Ken Szabo from Ohio runs a nifty little outfit
called The Loyal Order of Dedicated Grouse
Hunters. He puts out a newsy monthly
newsletter called Grouse Tales and sells
some nice products as well. (I'm pretty sure
Ken doesn’t remember me, but we met at a
RGS banquet in Ohio more than 30 years
ago.)
Every year, he asks his members to keep a
log of their grouse-hunting success: days and
hours hunted, flushes, flushes per hour, type
of dog and shotgun used percentage of flushes they were able to get shots at, and how many of
those shots bagged a bird. This year, he also asked for the number of woodcock flushes, flushes
shot at, and successful shots, too.
The percentages of flushed grouse that the cooperators got shots at came out close to the
group's long-term average for grouse = 24.9 percent. For woodcock, the same group got shots
at 32.27 percent, which you would expect because woodcock are generally in sight longer and
are less likely to flush wild. But shooting success? For grouse it was 33.98 percent, but woodcock
a whopping 55.99 percent. And remember, though woodcock lie better and fly slower, the
majority of woodcock shooting takes place while the leaves are still up, while grouse, not being
migratory, are hunted well into the fall when visibility is better.
Of course, as you can imagine, this gang can shoot. But if their success rates can be applied to
grouse and woodcock hunters nationwide, you have to flush four grouse to get a shot at one,
then you’ll hit one of three you shoot at. That means it takes a dozen grouse in the air to
produce one bird in the oven.
For woodcock, you get a shot at one in three. I would have thought that number would be
higher, but a number of the cooperators had very low woodcock shot-at numbers – one fellow
flushed 123 woodcock and shot at none (there’s a purist for you); another flushed 70 and shot at
eight, killing six – that had to be a guy working a pup. With a shooting success rate better than
one bird for two shells, it would take only six woodcock up to bring one down – just about twice
the grouse success.
Just an FYI: A quick glance through the data shows that those hunting with flushing dogs did
about the same as those with pointing breeds on either bird. Any dedicated grouse hunter

Green Valley Teamed with Cabella’s
We were able to get enough folks that Green Valley partnered with
Cabela’s for the Ladies Day Out on April 21st. Thank You to those who
were able to step in and man the booth on short notice.
Handling Clinic June 9th – RSVP
Steve is putting together a handling clinic for June 9th if there is enough interest.
This clinic will include demonstrations, question and answer sessions covering
topics such as: NASTRA and AKC Rules, tips on handling, how score cards
work, etc. It will be held at Stan’s place in West Eugene. RSVP to Steve @

50/50 RAFFLE TICKETS
As a fundraising event for the Green Valley Hunting and Retriever Club 50/50
Raffle tickets will be available to purchase at the next dog club event. This is
one of the ways we are trying to avoid having a loss in money for our club this
year.

EQUIPMENT TRAILER – We need Volunteers
We will be rotating the equipment trailer this year between members.
If you have room to keep the trailer for a month please sign up at
one of the club events.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PICK UP BIRDS
We need volunteers to pick up birds (Quail) from Stan before each event. His
place is located on Dukhobar Road in west Eugene
We also need someone to pick up ducks for the retrievers each month.
QUAIL FOR SALE
$5.50 each
If there are any extra quail at events, they are available for purchase at the end
of the day. You must provide your own carrier and equipment to get them
home.
It has been recommended that the word bird fee for each event be
changed to dog fee as this fee covers numerous items other than just
birds. It applies to equipment usage, insurance, costs to maintain
trailer, fuel for quads, yearend awards, etc.
