Dear Parents,
Thank you for your interest in University Child Development School!
We are delighted that you are pursuing UCDS as a prospective educational choice for your family.
The hallmark of UCDS is that we offer an individualized curricula for your child. The innovative
and challenging projects in each subject area are designed daily by groups of UCDS teachers to
meet the specific skills of each student in their multi-age classrooms. Most often, teachers work
with small groups of students, coaching individuals on their “next steps” in the learning process.
Our interactive teaching is connected by an overarching annual theme that provides continuity
throughout all the grades.
In this packet you will find general information about UCDS as well as all the materials necessary
for applying for the 2014-2015 school year. To ensure the quality of our admission process we
only accept 300 applications in an admission season. This gives us the opportunity to get to know
each and every applicant and their family. Therefore, we highly encourage families to submit their
initial application and fee as soon as possible. You may submit your initial application and fee
prior to touring UCDS to insure you are within the 300 application cap.
During a portion of the upcoming admission season, Tami Milles-Atterberry will be on maternity
leave. She will return to the admission office in late January to resume her position as the
Director of Admission. Joining the admission office to step into the role of Interim Admission
Director is Joelle Harrison, a longtime employee of UCDS. Joelle is a former member the UCDS
administrative team and spent many years teaching in our classrooms. We are excited to welcome
Joelle to the admission team and look forward to Tami’s return in January. Tami and Joelle will
work in tandem throughout the admission season to support applicant families through the
admission process.
As always, we are happy to help answer your questions regarding the application process for
UCDS. We look forward to working with your family through this year’s admission season and in
selecting a school for your child.
Warm regards,
Tami Milles-Atterberry

Admission Philosophy
UCDS At A Glance
UCDS recognizes and teaches to the individual learning styles found within all students. Through our admission
process, we work to build diverse and successful groups of learners. This thoughtful process allows us to thoroughly
evaluate and consider each individual applicant as we look for children who will thrive in an environment that is
respectful, innovative, academically rigorous, and where the students enjoy taking intellectual risks.
School and Class Size
In the 2013-2014 school year, UCDS has enrolled 324 students: 109 in our Early Elementary Program for children
age three through Kindergarten; and 215 in our Elementary Program, which includes grades one through five.
UCDS is committed to small classes of 18 students and a teacher to student ratio of 1:8 throughout the school.
Faculty
In addition to renowned classroom teachers, UCDS employs 10 resident teachers, and Spanish, Physical Education,
Art, Music, Science, Technology and Library specialists. The UCDS faculty has been nationally recognized for its
excellence and innovation in educating children.
School Hours and Extended Day Program
School is in session Monday through Friday from 8:20 a.m.–2:45 p.m. Early Elementary Half-Day students attend
from 8:20–11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. Childcare is available from 7:30 a.m. until the start of classes for all
students and after school until 6:00 p.m. for full-day students. Fees for the 2013-2014 Extended Day Program are as
follows: mornings are free of charge; the cost for afternoons will vary depending on the number of days selected; for
five afternoons a week, the rate is $285 per month. The program is also available on a daily, drop-in basis for
$27 per day (financial aid is available).
Community
UCDS builds a strong community between students, teachers, staff, parents, Board of Trustees and neighborhood.
The UCDS Parent Association is an integral part of our community and works to support the children, faculty,
parents, and programs of the school. Parents are invited to participate in a variety of school activities ranging from
family gatherings to school-wide fundraising efforts.
Tuition
Tuition is determined annually by the Board of Trustees. The 2013-2014 school year full-day tuition is $22,560;
half-day tuition is $14,660.
Financial Aid
UCDS is committed to making our program accessible to all families. Our admission process is need-blind.
All admission decisions are made independently of financial aid considerations. Financial aid is a grant used to
offset the cost of a UCDS education. Financial aid does not need to be paid back by the family. In the 2013- 2014
school year, 21% of students receive financial aid, totaling more than $735,000.
Siblings
UCDS adheres to our philosophy of considering each individual student when thinking about his or her educational
needs. Siblings do not attain automatic admittance to the school. Sibling families complete the same application
process as their peers when considered for admission.
Accreditation and Affiliations
University Child Development School is accredited by the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS),
and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). UCDS is also approved by the Washington State Board of Education as an elementary school and a Washington State in-service provider.
In addition, our Early Elementary Program is licensed by the Department of Early Learning.

UCDS School Tour Information
The first step in the UCDS admission process is the school tour. We conduct tours to give
prospective families an opportunity to see the school in action. Please remember, tours are for
parents only – your child will have an opportunity to visit UCDS at a later date. Babes in arms
are permitted, but if your child is walking we ask that you find childcare. School tours fill-up
quickly therefore we ask that you contact us at least one day in advance if you need to cancel
your tour reservation. Your courtesy allows us to open tour space to another prospective family
and to reschedule your visit if space is available.
You can reserve your tour spot by contacting the Admission Office at 206-547-8237 or
[email protected]. Priority for tour reservations will be given to families applying for
the 2014-2015 school year.
What to expect on the tour?
During your tour, you will have the opportunity to see our Preschool through Fifth-grade and
Specialist programs. We believe it is vitally important that you see as many aspects of the
program as possible during your tour. Tours begin by taking time to talk with our students and
visit a classroom. A walk-through of the entire campus follows. The Head of School will also
share the school’s philosophy and hallmark programs. We end the morning with an opportunity
for you to talk to members of the faculty.
Although not required, we have found it most beneficial to have both parents attend the UCDS
tour. We will send additional details to you prior to your scheduled tour date.
Tours begin at 9:00am and end at 11:00am. (doors open at 8:45am)

A Word About Parent Interviews
The goal of the UCDS admission process is to learn as much as possible about each applicant.
The Parent Interview serves a vital role by giving parents the opportunity to talk about their
children in greater depth with Admission Committee members directly. Your questionnaire
answers, as well as your child’s school visit, will help form the basis of this conversation. The
interview is also the best time for you to ask any remaining questions you have about UCDS.

Standardized Testing
UCDS uses standardized test results to help compile an overall picture of your child as
a learner. Test scores help us think about a student’s strengths and challenges and aid
us in building academic balance and diversity into our program. UCDS does not employ
a score cutoff for admission. Any child who is five years old or older by June 1st,
2014 must be tested.
For children six and under use: WIPSII-IV
For children over six use: WISC-IV
Below is a list of suggested testers/psychologists. You are free to consult with a tester
who is not on this list, please check to make sure they meet the testing requirements
prior to administering the test. We recommend you schedule testing as soon as possible.
Psychologists’ schedules become crowded after December. Results can be sent to UCDS
by the tester or the family.

Financing Options at University Child Development School
A UCDS Education is an Investment for the Future
UCDS provides a quality education that will equip your child with a solid academic foundation and a
lifelong love of learning.
Families with young children frequently think about the need to begin to save for a college education.
Parents also recognize that elementary school provides many of the primary building blocks for later
learning. For this reason, many families are finding that they cannot wait for the college years to invest
in their child’s education and want to begin now.
We recognize the importance of making a UCDS education affordable to everyone. This information is
designed to help families consider the various financing options and financial aid programs offered by
UCDS. While financing options are available to every UCDS family, financial aid grants are based on
need.
UCDS seeks families who value education and are committed to making this educational experience a
priority. It is our hope that the information that follows will help families with their decision to apply to
UCDS.
Financial Aid
The Board of Trustees of UCDS has budgeted funds to assist families with the cost of tuition and other
school-related activities. The Financial Aid Committee reviews all requests from families and awards
aid grants based on need and the year’s financial aid budget. UCDS subscribes to SSS by NAIS to help
collect financial information from parents and to provide suggested award levels to the Financial Aid
Committee. Applications are filed online with SSS and supporting documentation can also be uploaded
online. To make their decisions, the Financial Aid Committee uses the information from SSS as a
starting point and also considers our school policy and practices, as well as the budget we have available
in determining final awards.
Once all awards are made, we communicate our financial aid decisions to families. For new families,
award information is included with their acceptance letters. Returning families are notified of awards
by the end of April.
UCDS has a need-blind admission policy. The admission process is separate from the financial aid
process. A student must first be accepted by the Admission Committee before his or her financial aid
application can be considered by the Financial Aid Committee. The Financial Aid Committee will then
determine whether a student receives an award and how much will be granted for the academic year.
All financial aid recipients need to reapply each year for financial aid. With that said, UCDS is
committed to supporting current financial aid families who qualify for aid in subsequent years.
Other Financing Options
There are several financing options available for elementary school tuition. UCDS has enrolled with
two organizations, Your Tuition Solution and Sallie Mae. In addition, you may be able to set aside
funds through a Coverdell Education Savings Account, which is a savings program for education that,
unlike many such programs, allows you to withdraw funds for elementary school tuition. Additional
information regarding each is provided below. If you have questions about either program, please
don’t hesitate to contact Betty Greene, CFO and Financial Aid Director for UCDS ([email protected];
206.547.8237 ext. 270).
Your Tuition Solution
Your Tuition Solution specializes in fixed-rate K-12 education loans. The program is offered by over
2400 schools throughout the US. Your Tuition Solution is a Corporate member of the National
Association of Independent Schools and has an A rating from the Better Business Bureau.
You may borrow up to the full tuition cost minus any financial aid you receive. The minimum you
can borrow is $2,000. There are no origination or application fees or down payment, and terms are
available from 24 to 84 months. Interest rates are as low as 3.99% APR.
The basic requirements to qualify for the program are an annual income of at least $17,000, you’re
not currently delinquent on a major trade line (mortgage, auto loan, credit card), have not filed for
bankruptcy in the past three years, and have a debt-to-income ratio below 50%.
Applying for a loan is as easy as completing a five-minute online application.
For additional information, see the Your Tuition Solutions website (www.yourtuitionsolution.com) or
contact Betty Greene ([email protected]; 206.547.8237 ext. 270).
Sallie Mae K-12 Family Education Loan
The K-12 Family Education Loan finances all education-related expenses. You can borrow a minimum of
$1,000 up to the total cost of education, in such amounts as approved by Sallie Mae. There are flexible
payment terms from one to three years and interest rates are variable and are based on LIBOR onemonth rates. Sallie Mae loans may pay for tuition, books, computers, musical instruments, sports and
other extracurricular activities that enrich your child’s learning experience. For additional information,
see www.salliemae.com/student-loans/private-school-loan.
Coverdell Education Savings Account
Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (“ESA”) provide a means for investing post-tax dollars into
an investment fund that can be used to defray the costs of education for students in elementary and
secondary schools, as well as for college. Distributions are tax-free, provided they comply with IRS
regulations for the ESA (see www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc310.html). You should consult with your tax
advisor regarding these financing tools.
Payment options through UCDS
In addition to financing, there are several payment options for families at UCDS. These options are
outlined when enrollment contracts are offered.
