Fabric A Cutting Diagram
10”

Center and fussy cut a 20” square
from Fabric A according to Fig. 1.

Mark the center point on each side 10”
of the square, align your ruler on the
marks and cut four triangles from the
corners. The resulting triangles
should measure 10” on each short
side. Set aside for use in Step 8.
Note: The triangles will be larger
than needed and will be trimmed
later.

The remaining square should
measure 14” x 14”.
Center the
20” square
on a vertical
gold ribbon.

Block Assembly Instructions
1. Sew one 1 ½” x 14” Fabric H strip to each side of the 14” Fabric A square. Sew one 1 ½” x 16”
Fabric H strip to the top and bottom of the Fabric A square to make the center block. (Fig. 2).
2. Sew one 2” x 16” Fabric C strip to each side of the center block. Sew one 2” x 19” Fabric C strip to
the top and bottom of the center block (Fig. 3).
3. Cut the 1” Fabric H piping strip approximately 1/2” longer than the borders of the center block.
Fold each piece in half, wrong side together and press to make the piping. Pin (or baste) the piping in place on each side of the quilt with a ¼” overlap on each end (Fig. 4).
Tip: If machine basting, sew with black thread slightly less than ¼” seam so stitches don’t show.

4. Pin 2 ½” x 19” Fabric F strip to each side of the quilt top on top of the piping and sew in place catching the piping in the seam. Repeat with two 2 ½” x 23” Fabric F strips and the top and bottom of the
quilt top (Fig. 5). Trim the excess piping on the back even with the seam allowance.
5. Sew one 2” x 23” Fabric B strip to each side of the quilt top. Sew one 2” x 26”
Fabric B strip to the top and bottom of the quilt top (Fig. 6).
¼”
6. Turn the quilt top 45° and cut off each corner by aligning the 45° line of your
ruler along one edge of the quilt top with the ¼” mark at the corner of the seam
between the black piping and Fabric F strip. (Fig. 7)

7. Cut the 1” Fabric H piping strip to measure ½” longer than the long side of the Fabric A triangles.
Fold the piping in half, wrong side together and press to make the piping. Pin (or baste) to the long
side of one Fabric A triangle (Fig. 8). Repeat for the other three Fabric A triangles.
8. Center and sew one Fabric A triangle (with piping) to the Fabric B strip of each side of the quilt top
(Fig. 9). N o t e : In the cover quilt, the triangles are positioned so that the Fabric A gold ribbons in
the corner triangles are perpendicular to the gold ribbons in the center square.
** After the corner triangles are attached, trim the edges even and check that the quilt top is square.
VERY IMPORTANT! In a perfect world, once the corner triangles are attached in Step 8, the quilt top
should measure 27¼” x 27¼”. However, if your quilt top measures differently (due to differences in
sewing and cutting in Step 6), use the actual measurements rather than the given measurements to
determine the length of strips to be applied. Always measure through the center (not the edges) of the
quilt top to determine the length of the strips!
9. Sew one 2” x 27¼” Fabric E strip to each side of the quilt top. Sew one 2” x 30¼” Fabric E strip to the
top and bottom of the quilt top (Fig. 10).

10.
Sew one 2 ½” x 30¼” Fabric F strip to each side of the quilt top. Sew one 2 ½” x 34¼” Fabric F
strip to the top and bottom of the center block (Fig. 11).
11.
Place one 4 ½” Fabric G square on the top left corner of the quilt top, right sides together (Fig.
12). Sew across the diagonal of the smaller square from the upper right corner to the lower left
corner (Fig. 12). Flip open the triangle formed and press. Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle ¼” away from the sewn seam.

Follow Figure 13 for the seam direction to add a 4 ½” Fabric G square to each of the remaining
corners of the quilt top (Fig. 14).

13.
Repeat steps 11-12 to add four 3” Fabric H squares to the four corners of the quilt top (Fig. 15).
14.
Sew one 1 ½” x 34¼” Fabric G strip to each side of the quilt top. Sew one 1 ½” x 36¼” Fabric G
strip to the top and bottom of the quilt top (Fig. 16).

Quilt Top Assembly Instructions
15.
Sew one 2 ½” x 57” Fabric D strip lengthwise to one 7 ½” x 57” Fabric F strip to make one D/F
strip. Repeat to make four D/F strips total.
Note: The strips will be approximately 2” longer than necessary for ease of sewing.
16.
Center one 9 ½” x 57” D/F strip on one side of the quilt top and pin in place. Start sewing the
strip a ¼” from the top edge of the quilt top and stop a ¼” from the bottom edge.
DO NOT TRIM THE EXCESS. Repeat with the opposite side.
17.
Repeat Step 16 to sew one 9 ½” x 57” D/F strip to the top and bottom of the quilt top, making sure
to stop and start ¼” away from each end of the quilt top. To miter each corner, fold the quilt top on
a diagonal, wrong sides together. This should line up the strips from adjacent sides (Fig. 17).
18.
Starting at the sewn seam (represented by the arrow in Figure 17) draw a 45° line out to the edge
of the fabric. Sew on the drawn line. Trim the excess fabric, leaving a ¼” seam allowance. Repeat
this step with remaining corners (Fig. 18)
