The Immaculate One: Benefiting

by Kasia Jarosz
Luxury Management's fashion show, “The Immaculate One” was hosted by Corri McFadden of
eDrop-OFF, April Francis founder of the critically
acclaimed Dose Market and Angi Taylor, Morning Radio Host for 103.5 KISS FM at the Murphy
Auditorium – one of Chicago’s most beautiful historical buildings – benefiting the American Cancer
Society. The event also made a dream come true
for one young girl battling cancer. Nine-year-old
cancer survivor Alyssa’s wish to walk in a real
fashion show became a reality when she stole
the show – and hearts – with her courageous
debut on the runway in a Madison and Friends
Boutique dress. Chicago's most charitable and
most fashionable came together for this fashion
show, which showcased Maison de LaCour’s
Spring 2013 Collection and introduced Maison
de LaCour's new ready-to-wear line MDLC.

Julius scarf – Chunky-knit
sweaters are a piping-hot trend
this season, and so are its sister
scarves—much like the Boris Bidian
Saberi jersey, versatility is the scarf’s
defining virtue; throw it over a plain
t-shirt, jacket or even a sweater, if
you please. The Parisian runway’s
pairing of choice was the scarf
thrown over a similarly-stitched
sweater. You may now delete that
item from your list of faux pas.
5
Rick Owens boots – As Chicago begins to freeze
over, you’ll want to feel—and look—prepared
to combat it accordingly. Although it’s a dressier
boot, it can do everything from formal to casual with
the right pairings. Slide laces through to accomplish
the latter. Leave ‘em out and let the polished wraparound strap do the talking
to achieve the formal.
3
Inaisce pants – They’re pants
that have been treated to look
like leather, yet breathe like cotton—because they are cotton. While
these pants are of course simple
enough to compliment anything
from a cotton tee to a heavy sweater,
they are moreover deconstructed
to expose their intimate details and
stand out on their own.

Rolls-Royce Unveils
Art Deco Inspired Cars

creativity and skill employed by the
artisans at Rolls-Royce. Elements such as
hand-fashioned stainless steel inlays and
door cappings subtly evoke the decorative

the elegant simplicity of the Ghost is
presented in two-tone, jubilee silver atop

For Rolls-Royce clients, the Phantom

will be finished in one of two colours,

a dual bespoke coach line design and

and it went off better than anyone expected, including myself. Again, this
was me throwing myself into the deep end and swimming as hard
as I knew how. This launched me into a new direction – storybased events. I wanted the guests to have an emotional experience
and become a part of a story that develops around them. Every
room played a certain role in that web; each character brought
them into a different feeling. For the first time I was the storyteller
and the orchestrator, conducting the developments and collaborating with amazing artists. This concept led me into working for
big corporations and incorporating their brands into these experiences.”
For several years it was a dream come true for Juliette, she finally had a chance to use both her creative and management
skills to help bring countless fantasies to life. “It taught me
that there isn’t anybody you can’t get in touch with if you have
the right reason to do so. I remember going to a circus in Kiev
when I was a child and looking at the acrobats on the tightrope
and thinking ‘This person is an alien! How is that possible to
achieve!’. [Now] here I am, going to Cirque du Soleil asking,
‘I need to hire two of your acrobats for my event because I’m
creating a story of dolls coming to life in a Japanese garden”.
Her event resume includes U2’s AIDS Awareness Charity Gala
in Paris, the grand opening of the W Hotel and Mondrian Hotel
in Phoenix, AZ, the 2011 All Need Love Festival in Chicago’s
Field Museum and even the position of creative event director
for the premier publisher, UrbanDaddy in New York.
Eventually the fun of being a party fairy wore off. The turning point was a huge party for a vodka brand Juliette was assigned to design. “The brand gave me a big budget for the
event, so I rented Morgan Stanley’s private bank on Wall Street,
which has giant marble halls with 70-foot ceilings and wood
paneled rooms. I created a fictional character who was throw-

there’s also a need for medium sized indie
films. Hollywood studios reproduce conventional wisdom and mainstream ideology,
whereas indies challenge both because they
can, sometime successfully”.
She’s not planning to go easy on herself either, stating
that the healthiest way to navigate the movie business is to
have several projects lined up for you. “It would be ideal to have
one completed project seeking distribution, another film in the
midst of production, several being developed with writers and
all the while keeping your eye out for the next story to develop”.
Right now she is focusing on the development front after being
hired by a successful Russian businessman and his wife to adapt
a Russian novel in a form of an erotic thriller.
Looking at her biography, it is easy to wonder if she ever feels
like she’s losing her identity during all of these career changes.
“I don’t really have a sense of belonging to a certain culture. I
grew up with European values and associations but spent so
much of my development years in America. I speak Russian, instead of Ukrainian because we left before Perestroika so I don’t
feel Ukrainian either, although I was born in its capital. It’s quite
a miracle how things turned out because from a very young age
I took great risks with the direction of my life. Looking back at
who my family is helps me stay grounded and reminds me that
anything’s possible”.
Juliette’s diverse working experience speaks a lot about who
she has become: “Right now I’m closer to understanding who
I am or at least the person I want to become than ever before.
That’s the goal: to constantly get better and do better”.

and artisans who he would show off during the festivities, and
fifty-eight performers were staged throughout the night playing those roles. A huge amount of details went into the project,
months of preparation and rehearsals and six hundred guests
attended. We even had a butler who would greet guests and ask
their names; quickly whispering them to trumpeters stationed
at the entrance pillars who would then announce their arrival to
the rest of the gathered guests.”
Considering how passionately she talks about this event, it’s
easy to see why she felt underappreciated in a cold but shiny
world of upscale event management. “I finally realized that people missed the actual story, it was just a party for most of them
and when the night was done, it would never be seen again.
They just didn’t care while I cared probably too much. I got completely pushed into the advertising world, very much away from
the creative expression that brought me onto this path from the
start. So I had to stop and decided to redirect”.
That’s how her career took a new turn and led to her current
occupation of film producer. “It’s a full-circle for me – I continue telling the stories, but from now on – on a larger scale and
hopefully with some longevity. I know how to work with
talent, because I am an artist myself, how to put together
financing and productions from scratch as I’ve done it
successfully on many different scales. These next years

Remedies to keep your skin looking young, fresh

ith over twenty years in the makeup
and skincare industry, people always
ask me what they can do at home to
keep their skin healthy. Unless you
are coming to me for skin assessments, my
answer is to see a dermatologist or an esthetician! This will help identify your skin
type and discuss skin care options that are
unique to you in helping treat, prevent and
beautify. Remember, you should be going
to get a professional facial every 4-6 weeks
for truly healthy skin!
• Dissolve Epsom salt in warm water to
remove masks. You can also use it to
wash your face with when your face
feels bloated; it will help decrease water
retention and Epsom salt has healing
properties.
• Out of the bath or shower use your
facial toner or balancing product from
head to toe to restore your natural moisture levels.

For those looking for at home treatments, I
recommend these steps:
• Add a dash of baking soda to your at
home clarifying or purifying masks to
increase their anti-bacterial properties.
• Use eye cream! If not all the time then
at least at night. Keep the cream in the
refrigerator when not in use. The coolness provides a tightening effect, further
decreasing puffiness and improving circulation.
• A Clarisonic brush or rotary brush is
excellent for daily cleansing. Use it
in conjunction with a facial cleanser
recommended by your esthetician or
dermatologist. Work the brush around
your face and use figure eight motions
around the eyes to assist with puffiness
and product penetration. The brush will
improve circulation and help with deep
pore cleansing.
• Love serums! You can start with one
such a Vitamin C for anti-aging or cocktail multiple serums to target specific
concerns. One product I highly recommend and sell in my boutique is the
Jane Iredale Magic Mitt. For those with
super sensitive skin, it removes makeup
and impurities without affecting the pH
level of your skin and without cleanser.
• Get a good night’s rest! If you are having
trouble, look refreshed and rejuvenated
with all natural sleep aids like Sleep
Chocolate Squares from the Dream Institute in New York. Also, try Melatonin
or a caffeine free tea to settle you in at
night.

light in from every angle. This creates a weightless effect as modern art

Knotted chair (1996)
Designer: Marcel Wanders
Artisan and industrial technology merged to produce this lightweight, transparent chair. The appearance of this chair is very

Bertoria designed this chair to make feel art practical. The transparent metal effect with a beautiful diamond shape creates an

Grand indeed are the right words to use when describing the mountains surrounding you and the views from Amangani, and as far as we’re
concerned, there’s nowhere else to stay when visiting Jackson Hole. The
lodge is striking, and the combination of Oklahoma sandstone, Pacific

Arriving in Gstaad, you can’t miss the Palace sitting on a hill overlooking the Saanenland. Since opening in 1913, it’s been
through two world wars, the great depression, been a home for sick factory workers, seen every star and celebrity through
its doors, and since 1947 has had just one
family as it’s owner. That’s what makes it
truly special, and that’s why people who
choose to stay here, always come back
for more. Today, the family is led by Andrea Scherz Jr., and he does an excellent

world’s wealthiest people who call Gstaad

we guarantee it’s the most luxurious hut

Aspen is the winter home of choice for the seriously rich, and if you have to
ask the price then you probably can’t afford it. During Christmas and New

in town, and there’s nowhere better to have your ski-boots warmed before you
hit the slopes, enjoy champagne on the mountain at The Oasis pop-up bar, and
party the night away with the in-crowd at the Terrace Bar. It doesn’t get any

Now, after more than 30 years

“We want to make it a place

or where a family can come sit with

Augie said.
“We’re not Chili’s,” he laughed.
Bobby’s Deerfield, while still

But don’t let that description

Distinct Menu and Comfortable Styling Makes
“Antique Taco” Stand Out
By Camille Parker
An unlikely combo
Antique Taco’s concept came from married couple Rick and Ashley’s two loves:
cooking and antiquing. While it may
seem an unlikely combination, the couple
has effortlessly combined the two.
I’ll take that to go
Several of the antique pieces are also for
sale giving the term “carry out” a whole
new meaning at this counter service restaurant. It also allows owners, Ashley
and Rick, to change the décor as often as
they do the menu. It’s like eating a taco at
a amazing vintage garage sale.

Antique Taco is a husband-wife partnership that is proving to be rather successful. Rick Ortiz created the small
menu based on his Mexican heritage,
culinary travels and experiences cooking
at farmers’ markets. Five extremely well
conceived and well executed tacos have
their place at the top the menu. These
featured tacos are followed by a few unexpected bites under the “mas” category,
including intriguing combinations like
Masa Biscuit and Lobster Gravy, Meatballs and Mole with Giardinera, and Habanero Popcorn.
Among our favorites is the
vegetarian taco, a combination
of market mushrooms with
garlic kale, pickled cauliflower
and cilantro cream. The taco
achieves a lovely balance. Acid
from the cauliflower gives a
bite while a mellow garlic taste
from the kale, earthy depth
from the roasted mushrooms
and brightness from the cilantro cream satisfy with cool fla-

Taco opened with a bang in Bucktown earlier this year. As fashionable as it is tasty, this Mexican restaurant boasts a comfortable and classic 1950s farmhouse style. Designed by
co-owner, Ashley Ortiz, the front of the
house features china plates, rustic wood
tables, large glass water jugs and an oldworld scale that speaks to the “antique”
nature of the restaurants name. In many
ways, it is as inviting as dinner at Grandma’s house.

Bebidas Deliciosas
Don’t forget the drinks! Antique taco puts
an herbal twist on the classic margarita.
Fresh rosemary simple syrup adds a layer
of complexity to their refreshingly flavored juice margarita. If you are not into
tequila, try a vodka and agua fresca concoction. Fresh seasonal fruit ‘water’ gets
a shot of premium vodka that packs a
punch. Que Buenos!

Rustic Taste of Puglia Region, Italy

Mangiamo!
One of our favorite dishes is not even on
the regular menu: a beautiful seafood salad
“mare e monte” style. Huge sweet shrimp
are grilled along side baby octopus then set
atop a sauté of broccoli rabe and cannellini
beans. It is typical of southern Italian costal
regions to combine ingredients from both
the “sea and mountain”. Lemon and olive
oil drizzles are absorbed into the peppery
greens while brightening the flavor of the
charred seafood. Cross your fingers that it
is a “special del giorno” when you dine at

In keeping with true Italian food philosophy, quality ingredients are often left

Before entering the dining room through
the plastic curtains typical of every butcher
shop in Italy, Macello’s deli case is sure to
catch your eye. Here you can pick up imported specialty items like prosciutto, bresaola, olives and san marzano tomatoes. You
may not want to hold your breath trying to
purchase a ball of burrata to take home,
though. Demonte does not keep much in
house since he notes that it is best when
extremely fresh.

What’s in a name?
The word “macello” has two meanings in
Italian. Commonly “macello” is a butcher
shop or slaughterhouse. This makes the restaurants Lake Street location in the meatpacking district appropriate. The name is
also used in the expression “che macello!”.
Often, a playfully used phrase to mean
“what a mess!”. Demonte finds the dual
meaning humorous since he is convinced
all Italians are “a little bit of a mess”.
ta is so good it can be served on a piece
of bread and drizzled with olive oil for
a heavenly bite or mixed and matched
with its counterparts, thinly sliced prosciutto and peppery arugula, for tried
and true flavor combinations.
Unmistakably, the wood-burning
oven takes center stage in the colorful,
playful dining room. The oven pumps
out uniformly thin crusted, perfectly
charred Pugliese pizzas effortlessly.
One such pizza, the Pizza Molese,
named for Puglia’s northern neighbor, gets scattered with Italian EVOO
packed tuna, capers, olives, fresh tomatoes and a sprinkle of pecorino cheese.
Rooted in traditions of the coastal Italian
region, the pizza challenges anyone who
claims that cheese and fish never mix. The
Pugliese pizza, conversely, features only
two main ingredients: imported creamcentered mozzarella and mortadella. Mortadella is the more complex and flavorful
version of its highly processed American
knock off, bologna. Macello’s signature
pizza also includes that same milky cheese
but with mild-flavored black and green
cerignola olives and spicy sausage from
Puglia’s capital, Bari.
Cuisine rooted in tradition serves to
remind why these classic Italian recipes
continue to be passed down. Certainly,
Macello impresses with the rustic dishes
that speak to this rich heritage of Italian
cooking.

region, Demonte proudly prepares
the family recipes he brought with him

with a welcoming staff and Italian-style

Classics like “Braciola” stand out to
the generations of Italian-Americans
who count the dish as among their favorites, but is a delicious new discovery for unfamiliar diners. Demonte’s
recipe calls for thin, tenderized beef
cutlets layered with pancetta and rolled in
a breadcrumb, pecorino, parsley and garlic mixture before being simmered in a rich
tomato sauce. Traditionally separated into
a first and second course, Demonte tosses

“It’s going to be a party on stage,” Lee said,
referring to the bombastic opening scene the
show has in store this
December. “We see this
show as something that
Thomas McNeal and Josephine Lee
could become the next
‘Lion King.’ The collaboration brings so much life to the stage, and it exposes the children to a culture they would not have exposure to otherwise.”
Premiered at Lookingglass in 2006, “Sita Ram” is a modern
interpretation of the Hindu epic, “Ramayana” (Rama’s Journey), a sacred 20,000 verse religious poem that teaches morality and ideal behavior through allegories.
“The young prince and princess find each other on earth
again to bring the world righteousness, awareness, and love
between all beings,” said Natya Dance Theatre’s Associate
Artistic Director and Principal Dancer Krithika Rajagopalan.
The tale is just as critical to East Asian culture today as
it was in 300 BCE. Children grow up hearing the tale that
explores human values and demonstrates how powerful love
is created when the two elements (protagonists Sita and Rama)
come together to bring the world peace and harmony that is
made possible only through love.
