Kimi Raikkonen to join Peugeot? 2007 F1 World Champion Kimi Räikkönen drove the Peugeot 908 for the first time on the Aragon circuit last week. Peugeot said the Finn, F1 champion in 2007 with Ferrari and currently racing a Citroen in the world rally championship, had completed 35 laps in the 908. He was joined at the circuit by Peugeot Le Mans drivers Franck Montagny, Stephane Sarrazin, Simon Pagenaud and Alexander Wurz. “Kimi arrived yesterday evening in order to meet up with the team, prepare his seat and set up his driving position. He adapted very quickly to the car and gave us a valuable technical feedback,” said team manager Pascal Dimitri. “It is always interesting to get inputs from drivers such as Kimi,” Inside: • Premium space! • 508 passes Euro NCAP test and gets new diesel engine • Top marks for green and style added Pascal Raikkonen, 31, has also tested and competed in the U.S. based NASCAR series this year as he evaluates his options for the future. “I enjoyed this test with Peugeot. The 908 is a really fun car to drive,” said Kimi. Peugeot Sport director Olivier Quesnel said that this test session was planned for a long time in order to prepare the rest of the season on top of which we have allowed Kimi to discover the 908. According to Oliver, as of today, nothing has been scheduled or planned for the future. Nicknamed the Iceman, Kimi completed nine seasons in Formula One, in which he took the 2007 Formula One World Drivers’ Championship. • First eight winners of 207 Gimme More promotion • A million sold in six months • Peugeot price list (on-theroad) He is now competing in the World Rally Championship, under the ICE 1 Racing team. It was reported that Räikkönen is trying his hand at NASCAR, starting in the Camping World Truck Series with an eye on running in the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series. On 2 April Räikkönen signed a deal with Toyota team Kyle Busch Motorsports to run a limited schedule in the Camping World Truck Series. Räikkönen debuted at Charlotte Motor Speedway with a strong finish of No. 15, though started the day with tough practice sessions and qualified only at 31 out of 37 cars. His race craft was well received by team crew chief Rick Ren and his teammate Kyle Busch. Räikkönen went on to race in the Nationwide Series at the same track on May 28. He finished 27th after having debris stuck under his car and getting a penalty for speeding in the pitlane. Räikkönen also holds the record for the most wins in a debut year with Ferrari with 6, beating Alain Prost’s previous record of 5 from 1990. BIKES.TRUCKS | NEW SUNDAY TIMES | SEPTEMBER 4, 2011 SEPTEMBER 4, 2011 | NEW SUNDAY TIMES | CARS.BIKES.TRUCKS | V9 IN MOTION IN MOTION For Malaysian Peugeot Enthusiasts For Malaysian Peugeot Enthusiasts Premium space! 508 passes Euro NCAP test and gets new diesel engine By Hezeri Samsuri F AMILY trips have always been endearing. Experience, however, states that a good trip starts off from a happy driver, and the Peugeot 5008 can definitely promise you a smiling driver upon arrival to your destination. It has the looks that are purely French. Pardon me, the front is definitely a Peugeot but the rear harks the signature design of a Citroen. That’s ok because the two brands are under the same PSA Group. From the side, you will notice that the 5008 has a very long nose, a bit too long from where the driver is seated. Luckily, the MPV comes with the excellent Parking Assistance, which has the ASM (available space measurement) to help you via visual and audio warning before the front bumper kisses the car in front of you, or your rear backs into a Ferrari. Panaromic roof offers airy and bright interior. The seats can be folded flat into the floor. THE Peugeot 508 that passed the Euro NCAP safety tests with a 5-star rating now comes with a new diesel engine. The Peugeot engineers and designers have paid special attention to “Child Occupant Protection”, “Adult Occupant Protection”, “Pedestrian Protection” and “Safety Assist”. The 508 obtained the highest “Child Occupant Protection” score in its category and an excellent 97 per cent rating for “Safety Assist”. Following on from the award obtained in October 2010 for the 3008, 5008 and 308, the 508 also won the Euro NCAP Advanced prize for its premium emergency call system dubbed “Peugeot Connect SOS” which is available with WIP Nav as an option or as standard depending on the destination. The 508 is now available with a 2.0-litre HDi FAP engine that produces 163hp and it has a six-speed manual gearbox. This engine previously came with a six- speed automatic gearbox. This means its CO2 emissions are 129 g/km (4.9 l/100km) for the saloon car and 130 g/km (5.0 l/100km) for the station wagon. What you get What you get is a premium cabin space that is actually bigger than what its compact exterior suggests. The French as you might know, love their MPVs and the 5008 proves it. Comparing the 5008 with a similarly priced Japanese brand MPV will make one wonder why the latter is so skimpy on equipment. With the 5008, the equipment list is extremely long. Your RM159,888 (OTR with insurance) will get you: ■ Panoramic roof that is tinted to keep the heat away ■ Multimedia system (that includes two seven-inch LCD screens, two Bluetooth headphones and two separate video RCA jacks) ■ Dual-zone air-conditioner system with a second blower ■ Premium leather interior with electric driver seat ■ Head up display with Distance Alert ■ Electric parking brake ■ Auto headlight and wipers ■ Audio system (MP3, CD player, tuner and six-speaker system with Bluetooth and USB input). Excellent creature comfort includes pop-up table. Peugeot RCZ. Looking grand , the 5008 offers a new face in the compact MPV market. ■ Six airbags with ABS, EBA, EBD, ASR, DSC and ESP ■ Peugeot Hill Start Assist ■ Cruise control with speed limiter ■ Auto dimming mirror ■ One-touch electric windows for all with roll-up sun shades for four rear windows ■ 17-inch alloy wheels ■ Hidden floor storage ■ Two ISOFIX points (second row seats) ■ Anti whiplash front headrests ■ Rear doors child lock switch on the driver’s door ■ Rear boot light doubles up as rechargeable torchlight. This kind of list can only be found in a luxury Japanese or German MPV, with the price tag way above a quarter million. Under the hood The taillight are certainly one of the highlights. Engine wise, Peugeot is not stingy either. Under that swooping hood is a twin-scroll turbo high-pressure four-inline DOHC 16-valve VVT 1,598cc engine that can also be found in the 308 Turbo and the 3008 SUV. This proven engine offers 156hp and 240Nm, all readily available at the tip of your right foot. The gearbox is a Japanese Aisin sixspeed automatic with Tiptronic and Sport mode. A good choice as European carmakers always have problems with automatic transmissions – using a Japanese unit scores a lot of points in the reliability section. Peugeot claims the 5008 can hit up to 195km/h (limited by the ECU) while the 0-100km/h is done in 10.8 seconds. All these figures still allowed the MPV to return a good 7.9L/100km (combined, EU tested). Road test I took the 5008 on Friday and the next morning, packed it with the family (the wife and two kids) and luggage for a drive up to my brother-in-law’s place in Lumut. The kids and the wife had only praises for its gadgets. The panoramic roof allowed light to come in but since the glass roof is tinted, the cabin did not turn into an oven on wheels. The dual zone climate control worked efficiently to keep the temperature comfortable. The seats were easily adjusted and, thanks to the sound deadening materials used, the Peugeot was indeed a quiet and comfortable family mover. The 5008 had no problem getting up to the allowed highway speed limit. The gearbox shifted confidently and smoothly and the engine was smooth all the way. Maximum torque can be had from as low as 1,400rpm. This helped me a lot when I needed to overtake the slow going makciks and pakciks on the B-roads of Kuala Selangor to Sabak Bernam. Along the way we met two Japanese MPVs of the same category who wanted to check out how quick our Frenchie is. Suffice to say, they should ditch their 18-inch wheels and Japanese suspension and body kit because this stock Peugeot MPV could easily smoke them without breaking a sweat. Car nuts will definitely enjoy the power of the turbocharged engine. I am not talking about 200hp of fire breathing performance, but just enough low-end torque for easy driving. The good balance in performance also allowed no real need for those flappy paddle shifters. In fact, I never did use the Tiptronic function because the gearbox could very well read my intention and shifted down as quickly as the system allowed it. Three days of driving it around and never once did I complain about lack of power. On a long sweeping corner, the 5008 displayed a slight hint of body roll. Not too much, but combined that and the fact that the driver sits high up, one will feel the car is slightly rolling. Top marks for green and style Dashboard uses high quality soft touch plastics. Conclusion An MPV is to be enjoyed by not only the driver, but also the whole family. The 5008 was obviously designed by people who enjoy travelling to the countryside. Just check the amount of space you can put your belongings and the cheerful interior that promotes family bonding and you will understand why Head-up display. LCD screens for rear passengers. families will love this French lion. A tight-fisted accountant would welcome the three-year (or 100,000km) warranty that comes with the MPV. None of the other MPVs in the same category offer such equipment at such a price. Value for money is certainly what the Peugeot 5008 is. The best part is the package is so good that it makes you wonder why the rest are selling theirs at such a high price. IN a week of celebration for Peugeot, the French auto manufacturer has been recognised with awards by prominent magazines Next Green Car and Auto Express. Next Green Car announced its winners of the most scientificallybased Green Awards, finding nine winners from a shortlist of Britain’s greenest new cars of 2011/12, all selected for their environmental Green Car rating, level of innovation, value, drive experience and design. The Peugeot 508 Saloon 1.6 e-HDi won the award for the “large family” category. As noted by Dr Ben Lane, managing editor of Next Green Car: “The winners reflect the latest technologies being used by manufacturers to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions.” The Peugeot RCZ Sports Coupé was judged the “Best Sports Coupé” in “Best New Car” awards organised by “Auto Express, Britain’s best-selling weekly car magazine. The RCZ has won it for the second year running. Auto Express said: “The flagship GT THP 200 is the stand-out choice in Peugeot 508. the RCZ range. It sprints from 0-60mph in 7.3 seconds and has agile handling to match. The short-throw gearbox, grippy chassis and responsive steering give it the edge over rivals. “And it all comes wrapped in the most eye-catching bodywork around.” According to the website, the RCZ won against competitors like the Audi TT and VW Scirocco. Among the characteristics that set the RCZ apart from other cars in the same category was the distinctively shaped roof and smoothly integrated rear windscreen, which makes the kind of visual impact that rivals still have not achieved. Wong Kwai Lan A million sold in six months MORE and more Peugeot vehicles are being sold the world over. Peugeot sold 1,091,000 units in the first six months of 2011 and the proportion of sales made outside Europe is 44 per cent compared with 41 per cent a year ago. Sales rose in the marque’s priority development zones particularly in Russia, Ukraine and other CIS countries with volume up 58 per cent and a 0.2 point rise in market share. In Latin America, volume was up by 19 per cent and market share rose by 0.2 point. In Asia, volume was up 18 per cent. In China, with almost 81,000 vehicles sold in the first half of the year, and the success of the 408 launched in 2010, Peugeot’s growth was double that of the market. Despite an unfavourable market mix in Western Europe, in France, the entire range drove Peugeot sales dynamics. This fed through to volumes of 220,940 passenger car sales and a rise in the passenger car market share to 18 per cent. These sales dynamics enabled Peugeot to fix a clear target: become a benchmark manufacturer. It is underpinned by a strategy to move up market in terms of products and services. Peugeot launched four new models across three continents in 2010. This conquest of new territories continued in the first half of 2011 with launches of the 508 in Europe and the 408 in Latin America as well as the new 308. In Europe, the commercial launch of the 508 has been a success. Launched as a saloon car and a station wagon since February and March, Peugeot has already received 45,000 orders for this model. Targets have been exceeded in several countries, including France, Germany, Britain and the Netherlands. The new 308 is leading the Peugeot charge in a strategic segment of the market. With emissions limited to 98g of CO2, the new 308 adopts a new style as well as e-HDi technology boasting new generation stop ’n start feature enabling a 15 per cent reduction in consumption in city driving. In France, the 308 featuring e-HDi technology accounted for 45 per cent of orders since its launch in May. The RCZ high-end sports coupe, 30,000 units of which have been produced since its launch just over a year ago, is continuing to advance with over 11,000 units sold in 2011.
