An article has been doing the rounds about a
German court that awarded a man the right
to pee standing up. According to the article,
the court rules that a tenant who liked to pee
standing up doesn’t owe his landlord money
for damages apparently caused by splashing, or
missing his target all together. Although it was
proven that the urine damaged the marble
floors, Judge Stefan Hank ruled that the man’s
method was within cultural norms, saying that
“despite the increasing domestication of men
in this context, urinating standing up is still
common practice.”
While men aren’t liable for damages from

FOUND LURKING IN SOIL
According to the dailymail.co.za, the antibiotic was tested
and the medicine rapidly cured infections that should have
been fatal, including bugs that damage the heart. This could
provide a solution to antibiotic resistance, which has seen
once minor infections become deadly after finding ways of
evading the drugs.
The new drug has been named teixobactin
and was discovered after British, German
and American scientists went back to
basics and studied bacteria from a grassy
field in Maine in the US. Many bacteria
and fungi naturally make antibiotics to
keep themselves safe, and most that we
use today have their roots in nature.
Scientifically, going back to the basics and
drawing remedies from nature seems to be the answer
to many modern-day problems. These living organisms
are capable of uses that will astound those that bother to
consider them. Micro-organisms, for example, are ideally
suited to the task of contaminant degradation because
they possess enzymes that allow them to use contaminants
as food. Bio-augmentation enhances the performance of
indigenous bacteria through the addition of bacterial strains
with specific activities. Microbes are also used for the cleanup and remediation of soil, asphalt, concrete, wood, metal
and equipment that has come in contact with oil, gasoline,
and grease.
