This will activate UninstallShield which will completely remove all ParaWin XP components and restore your system settings. Note: You have to restart your computer to complete the uninstallation process. 6 Chapter 2. Setting Up ParaWin XP Starting ParaWin XP To set the desired languages and keyboard layouts, the following steps should be taken: 1. Open Control Panel. 2. Doubleclick the ParaWin icon in the Control Panel to display Keyboard properties. 3. Click the Add button and choose the desired language layout from the dropdown list. Click OK. 7 Setting Up ParaWin XP 4. Click the Properties button to select the preferred method of switching between languages. In the Keyboard Layout Properties window select the Hotkey to switch between different keyboard layouts. To see the twoletter language indicator on the taskbar, check the “Enable Indicator on Taskbar” box. Click OK. Use the mouse to switch between languages/layouts and select the desired language from the list. Or use the selected Hotkey. 8 Setting Up ParaWin XP Changing Regional Settings Many programs support international settings. If you want to use languages other then English, you have to change the Regional Settings of your computer to the desired ones, in order to correctly display the characters of the selected language and the language information. You will then be able to run the proofing tools for the selected language. If you have problems pasting the text to the Clipboard in the proper language, make sure you have switched to the proper language before copying the text. Changing Regional Settings in Windows NT 4.0: • Locate and doubleclick the Regional Settings icon in the Control Panel. • Click the downarrow button to display the list of available languages. • Select the desired language from the list. • Check “Set as system default locale” box and click OK or Apply button. • Click Yes button. Your computer will restart, and the new system settings will be activated. 9 Setting Up ParaWin XP Changing the Regional settings affects the way the programs display and sort dates, times, currency and numbers. To have this information displayed correctly, i.e. in the computer’s original language, you should return the Regional Settings to the original language (say English), but DON’T CHECK “Set as system default locales” check box. This way your Windows NT system will keep the inner system information for the new language, but the original interface settings, such as time, date and numbers display, will remain unchanged. 10 Setting Up ParaWin XP Changing Regional Settings in Windows 2000: • Locate and doubleclick the Regional Options icon in the Control Panel. • From the General tab select an additional language group in the Language settings for the system window and check the box next to the language group. • The system locale enables applications to display menus and dialogs in their native language. If you want Windows will use the code page and system settings of the selected language, such as menus and dialogs, click Set default. . . button. • Select the appropriate locale and click OK button. Your computer will restart, and the new system settings will be activated. 11 Setting Up ParaWin XP Changing Regional Settings in Windows XP: • Locate and doubleclick the Regional and Languages Options icon in the Control Panel. • From the Advanced tab select a language to match the language version of the nonUnicode programs you want to use. This system setting enables nonUnicode programs to display menus and dialogs in their native language. It does not affect Unicode programs, but it does apply to all users of this computer. • Select the appropriate language and click OK button. Your computer will restart, and the new system settings will be activated. 12 Setting Up ParaWin XP Setting Up ParaWin XP Properties To setup ParaWin XP Pro properties: • Either point the cursor on the language Indicator on the Taskbar, click right mouse button and select Properties; • Or click the right mouse button on the ParaWin XP Viewer caption bar and select Properties; • Or doubleclick the ParaWin icon in the Control Panel. • Or select ParaWin XP Properties from the Program Group. The list of the installed keyboard layouts is displayed in the ParaWin XP Properties window. You may Add or Remove any of the layouts as well as make changes in their Properties. 13 Setting Up ParaWin XP The Options window allows enabling additional ParaWin features: System0wide keyboard switching allows an easy switching between languages when the switching capabilities are restricted; Beep on keyboard layout switch enables sound when switching between languages; Enable Indicator on the taskbar shows/hides the language indicator icon on the taskbar; Indicator in keyboard Viewer mode switches language indicator from Taskbar indicator mode to Layout Viewer mode. Removing Layout Click the Remove button in the ParaWin XP Properties window. If you check the box “Remove layout file from the disk” the corresponding file will be removed from your system. 14 Setting Up ParaWin XP Layout Properties In the Keyboard Layout Properties window you can view and edit the layout properties. In this window you can change the layout Indicator label and assign a hotkey combination to switch between layouts. The More… button opens the window used for setting up an alternate hotkey combination and accessing the Keyboard Editor. Use an alternate hotkey to: get a direct access to a desired layout; combine layouts from the different language groups. For example, you may want to group Western European languages into one set by assigning a Hotkey Left Ctrl and another Hotkey Right Ctrl for Slavic languages. To add the English layout to both sets, assign Left Ctrl as the primary Hotkey and Right Ctrl as an alternative one. 15 Setting Up ParaWin XP Keyboard Viewer The Keyboard Viewer operates in the following three modes: • Taskbar Indicator mode (default) • Layout Viewer mode • Movable Keyboard Indicator (or Collapsed Viewer) mode After the installation of ParaWin XP, the language indicator appears on the right side of the Taskbar. • Place your mouse pointer on the indicator and click the left mouse button. The list of currently available languages/layouts will “pop up”. The currently active layout/language is designated with the check mark. • Clicking the right mouse button opens the submenu with Open Viewer and Properties. The Open Viewer menu item will bring up the Keyboard Layout Viewer. You may prefer to use this mode, if you are not familiar with the current keyboard layout . Check mark Indicator in keyboard Viewer mode box in the ParaWin XP Properties window to display the Viewer on your screen. 16 Setting Up ParaWin XP Click the right mouse button on the Keyboard Viewer caption bar to open its menu. Move, Size and Close are three standard Windows options. The lower part of the menu contains the following ParaWin XP options: Collapse — switches Viewer to Movable Keyboard Indicator window. In this mode the right mouse button brings up the same menu as in the Viewer mode, but Collapse option changes it into the Explode option that switches ParaWin back into the full Viewer mode. Properties — opens ParaWin XP Properties. Keyboard Type — selects your actual Keyboard Type. Set Font — lets you select font for the Viewer window. 17 Chapter 3. Creating New Keyboard Layout Keyboard Editor provided in ParaWin XP enables you to edit existing keyboard layouts and to create additional ones for any language supported by Windows NT/2000/XP. To edit a keyboard layout, follow the procedure described below. Loading Keyboard Layouts • First, open the Keyboard Editor by clicking on Keyboard Editor menu item from the Start/Programs/ParaWin XP/Keyboard Editor menu. • Select File/New to create a new layout or File/Open to open an existing one. 18 Creating New Keyboard Layout If you would like to use an existing active or not active layout, please use one of the following procedures: • File/Load Active/<name of layout> menu item to load any active layouts to be edited. • Click OK in the File/Open/Load Layout dialog box after the desired layout has been selected from the dropdown list. If you know the file name of the layout to be edited, then • Click the From File... button in the File/Open/Load Layout dialog box and select an appropriate file from the keyboard layout files available. 19 Creating New Keyboard Layout Setting Up Keyboard Layout Properties • Click the Options/Layout Properties. . . submenu item to invoke the dialog box for changing layout Properties settings. • The “Layout Text:” field is designated for entering your layout name under which it will be installed into the system. • The “Language:” parameter of the Keyboard Layout can be selected from the list of available on your system language/layout entries. • The “Advanced:” Settings such as Enable AltGr (equivalent to Ctl+Alt) functionality and Dead Key can be selected by checking the appropriate box. 20 Creating New Keyboard Layout • The next step is to select Font Subset to be used for this layout. The Subset list contains character sets for various writing systems and symbols. You should select Subset item that supports the language you desire. Now you can set the typeface to be used during the editing session. 21 Creating New Keyboard Layout Mapping characters to keys Before starting this process, select the specific keyboard state for which you will perform a keyboard editing. To do so, use your mouse to click the appropriate key (Shift, Ctrl, Ctrl+Alt or Caps ) on the Keyboard Editor’s screen or on your real keyboard. Now, with the Shifted state set, you can remap all capital letters and some symbols by clicking the key being assigned (shown as pressed). Position the cursor on the desired character in the table and either doubleclick the left mouse button to place it, or drag and drop it over the preselected key. The new character appears on the keyboard. Repeat this procedure for other keys. If you need to change any character, you can either clear a key using Edit/Clear Key menu command or reassign a character. 22 Creating New Keyboard Layout Saving and Activating Layouts Now, if you are satisfied with your new layout, you can either save or activate it. • File/Activate... command from the File menu will prompt you for the keyboard layout file name under which this layout will be saved in the system. At this point the program will ask you to reload your system in order to activate all newly created keyboard layouts. Click the Yes button and system will restart. 23 Creating New Keyboard Layout After your system restarted, you can check the newly installed layout by leftclicking the Language Indicator on the Taskbar and observing a list of active layouts. To save a new or an edited layout for the future use and without its activation, use Save or Save As ... commands from the File menu. • File/Save As ..command from the File menu will prompt you for the keyboard layout file name under which this layout will be saved. • File/Save command from the File menu will record your changes to the layout file without changing its name. Dead Keys The key which is used in a sequential combination with the next pressed key to produce an accented character is called Dead key. Note: Dead key by itself does not generate any character. Dead Keys on the keyboard chart are marked with black triangles in the corners. You can convert any key to a Dead Key by placing a check mark in the Dead Key box in the lower right section of the Keyboard Editor window. 24 Creating New Keyboard Layout For example, pressing on your keyboard the “dead key” (‘) followed by the letter < η > key will produce letter ή in your document. When you select a predefined Dead Key, or check the Dead Key box, the zoom box next to it changes into a new Dead Key. To edit the selected Dead Key you must click on it and then select another completer for this dead key from the available assortment. 25 Creating New Keyboard Layout The procedure for editing available completers for any dead key is exactly the same as for editing any other keyboard layout, i.e. either by dragging a character onto almost any key on the keyboard or by double clicking a character to be used as an active key. All assigned completers on the keyboard chart are shown in black; the keys which are not completers are dimmed. If the check box Dead Key is cleared, then all completers currently associated with the dead key are deleted and the Dead Key is converted back into a normal key. 1. Click on Dead Key 2. Select the appropriate box. 3. Select Edit/Edit Dead Key Menu or Click on 26 Creating New Keyboard Layout 4. Click the completer key. 5. Assign the appropriate character. 6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each completer key. 7. To finalize the process click 27
