Pool B
Algeria
Algeria have recently emerged as one of the best teams in Africa, not
only because of their fantastic success over the last two years but also
because of their attractive and modern style of play.
The Algerian team is a result of more then seven years of work and
development, with most of the players coming from the cities of Bejaia
and Chlef where a lot of work was done during the 1990s to find
players.
In 2000 most of these players started their international careers at the
girls’ African Championship where they surprised everyone with their
talent by winning the title. A year later the same girls won the junior
title, beating everyone in straight sets, before playing in two World
Championships.
The Algerian Federation’s belief in the team saw them put together a
new technical staff in 2006 and provide finance and materials to help
prepare the team for the African Games and the continental Olympic
qualifiers.
The squad began to work more than three weeks a month, attended
international camps and played strong teams such as Cuba and Italy
to help them to raise the level of their game.
In July 2006 Algeria was ready for the African Games, where they
won gold. A month after that Algeria lost the African Championship in
Kenya but played with six new players while resting their stars. But
during the Olympic qualifier Algeria bounced back to claim an Olympic
ticket.
Some of the Algerians are now playing in professional leagues in
Europe, which is helping develop their skills further. The Algerians
play with a modern style adapted to their physical and technical skills.
Their top players include Lydia Oulmou and Faiza Tsabet, who both
play for Istres Volleball in France.

Ikhedji Mouloud became Head Coach of
Algeria in 2006 after a stellar career as a
player and coach in the North African nation.
Indeed, Mouloud is one of the most famous
Algerian coaches. Born in Bejaia, a hotbed
for Volleyball in Algeria, he was a Volleyball
player during the 1980s and then he joined
the University of Sport in Algiers where he
graduated. He started coaching in 1989 at
the MBB Volleyball club in Bejaia where he
won a lot of titles in the younger age groups.
In 1996 he was called up as a second coach
of the Algerian Men’s National Team and
he went with the team to the FIVB World
Championship in Japan in 1998, while also
winning the Arabic Championship twice.
Mouloud then coached one of the most famous
Men’s Clubs in Algeria, El Kseur of Bejaia.
In March 2006 he was named as Head Coach
of the Women’s National Team and he started
working with his technical staff composed of
Boussaid Salah and Redjdal Mohand.

Mouloud led the team to gold at the African
Games in July 2007 and a month after
that the team won silver at the African
Championship. Then in January 2008 at the
continental Olympic qualifier his team swept
all the opposition in straight sets to clinch a
place in Beijing.
“I’m proud of the job that we did for the last
two years and we are expecting that my team
will give a nice vision of its game during the
Olympic Games no matter if we are going to
play the best teams in the world. Of course
we are going to learn and but we are also
going to fight,” says Mouloud.

Brazil
Brazil are currently ranked No. 1 in the world by virtue of consistently
high finishes in major international tournaments, but also by the
wobbles experienced by the Russians and the Chinese in 2007.
It was a mixed bag for Brazil in terms of results in 2007. In the
FIVB World Grand Prix, without setter Fofão and the middle-blocker
Walewska, the most experienced players, Brazil finished fifth. The year
ended on a high, though, when the Brazilians claimed silver behind
Italy in the FIVB World Cup in Japan, putting them at the top of the
world rankings.
The previous year was probably better overall, though, for Brazil.
Then, they won the Montreux Volley Masters, the Pan-American Cup
and the World Grand Prix for the sixth time before having another
great end to the year by claiming silver behind Russia in the FIVB
World Championship in Japan.
Brazil have had a run of good form since 2003, which was something
of a turning point for them. Following a seventh-place finish at the
annual FIVB World Grand Prix, coach Marco Motta was replaced by
José Roberto Guimarães, an Olympic Champion in Barcelona 1992
with the Brazilian Men’s National Team.
The first move by Guimarães was to bring back many players who had
been away from the courts for a long time. Erika Coimbra, Elisângela
Oliveira, Fernanda Venturini, Fofão and Walewska Oliveira, who all
helped Brazil claim bronze at the 2000 Games in Sydney, came to the
rescue and led the team to the silver medal at the 2003 World Cup.
That fantastic result came on the back of the Brazilians winning the
South American Championship in Colombia.
In his team reshuffle, Guimarães didn’t forget the new generation. He
developed young middle blockers Valeskinha and Fabiana Claudino.
Fabiana, for example, won the gold medal at the 2003 Junior World
Championships in Thailand where she received the Best Attacker
award.
In the following season, they claimed the World Grand Prix, and fourth
place in the Athens Games. In 2005, they won the Montreux Volley
Masters, the World Grand Prix, the South-American Championship and
the Grand Champions Cup.
This haul of trophies was the early stages of a run of form that hasn’t
let up yet.

After finishing his cycle in the National team, Zé
Roberto started to coach Banespa Men’s team,
where he won the gold medal in the 1996-97

that, he coached Women’s team Dayvit. The
following season he left the courts and worked as
a Volleyball and football manager. Zé Roberto was
back in Volleyball in 2001 to coach BCN/Osasco,
and during this season he claimed second place in

“Maybe that was the reason why I became a
coach. The setter is that player who keeps contact
with all the team. It is easier for him to get used
to the attack style of other players, who gives him
a better vision of the game and creates a closer
relationship between the setter and the coach,”
says Zé Roberto.
He started his career as a coach in 1988. He
quickly became assistant coach to Bebeto de
Freitas, who was Brazil Men’s Head Coach. In
1991, he started to coach the Youth and Junior
National Teams and won the silver medal in the
Women’s World Championship.

As a coach with strong principles and high
values, Chen, whose hobby is drinking Chinese
tea – he even drinks it during matches – is
never content with his achievements. “It’s
easy to climb to the top, but not easy to stay
there,” Chen has said in the past.

More recently he said: “We know the Chinese
people have high hopes of our team. In the
past three years, more and more teams are
becoming stronger and seven or eight teams
in the world all have chances to win the
Olympic gold medal. As for the Chinese team,
we have chances as well as difficulties. What
our team is doing these days is to train hard
and try our utmost to get as good a result as
possible.”

Cuba
Cuba’s golden era in and around the 1990s is fast fading into the distance.
The Cuban Women won three consecutive Olympic gold medals at Barcelona
1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000, and even collected a bronze medal
at Athens 2004.
Cuba won two of their three FIVB World Championships in 1994 in Sao Paulo,
Brazil, and 1998 in Tokyo, Japan (the other was in 1978 in Saint Petersburg,
Russia), and claimed the FIVB World Cup in 1989, 1991, 1995 and 1999.
On top of all that, they claimed the inaugural World Grand Prix in 1993 and
won it again in 2000.
Blessed with a plethora of exceptional jumpers and heavy hitters, they were
the force to be reckoned with a few years ago.
That’s still the case reckons Cuban Head Coach Antonio Perdomo.
He believes his charges can emulate the teams of the past and has indicated
that the Cuban’s aim at the Beijing Games is to win back the gold medal,
though he admitted it wouldn’t be an easy task.
Cuban middle blocker and powerful server Nancy Carrillo, elected Cuba’s
best player in 2007, leads the squad.
The team also consists of veterans Yumilka Ruiz and Zoila Barros and setters
Yanelis Santos and Daimi Ramirez.
Last year, Carrillo was the Most Valuable Player of the Pan-American Cup,
the Pan-American Games and the NORCECA Continental Tournament.
Ruiz, a member of the gold-medal teams in Atlanta and Sydney and part of
the Athens squad, was the Most Valuable Player of the Continental Olympic
Qualification Tournament in Monterrey, Mexico, last December.
Trophies have been hard to come by in the last few years for Cuba. They
finished just outside the medals at the 2007 FIVB World Cup in fourth position.
They were a disappointing seventh at the 2006 FIVB World Championships.
In the FIVB World Grand Prix, the Cubans finished fourth three times in a
row from 2004 before another disappointing seventh-placed finish in 2007.
The Cubans have had their hands full during the final stretch to the Olympics,
taking part in the China International Tournament, the Montreux Volley
Masters in Switzerland, the Pan-American Cup in Baja California, Mexico,
and World Grand Prix.

He was assistant coach of the Cuban Men’s
National Team for four years, and in 2007 he
took the reins of the Cuban Women’s National
Team with the aim of taking them back to the top.
As a graduate in physical education and FIVB
instructor, Perdomo’s experience will be a
fundamental factor in achieving the ambitious
objectives that were set for the Beijing Games.
That is to win a fifth-straight medal at the
Olympics. He still has some tactical plans up his
sleeves, too.

need first to change all the playing system in
Cuba, because every team plays like that. So we
need to modify first all the players’ rhythm and
habits. Since we’re still obtaining results with
this system, we’re still using it, but we’re ready
to change.”
“Will change when we will have a very good
setter who is not able to attack so well. Now we
have two setters with really good attacking skills,
and we need to take advantage of this.”

Volleyball is the most practised women’s sport in Italy and FIPAV (the Italian
Volleyball Federation) can count on more than 100,000 registered athletes.
This popularity is paying off at international level.
In 2007 the Italian Women’s team won two gold medals, at the FIVB World Cup
and European Championship, and the bronze at the FIVB World Grand Prix.
The previous year they claimed bronze at the World Grand Prix and in
2005 gathered two silver medals at the World Grand Prix and European
Championship.
The gold medal at the World Cup in 2007 guaranteed the Italians a place at
the Beijing Games.
It will be their third successive Summer Games after qualifying for the event
for the first time in 2000.
Then they finished in ninth place, improving on that in Athens four years
later with a fifth-place finish.
With their form of the previous few years, they’ll be hoping to secure their
first podium finish in Beijing.
It has been a rapid improvement from the Italians, which was triggered by
the project behind qualifying for their first Olympics.
In order to reach this goal, the Italian Volleyball Federation worked out a
project called “Club Italia” with the aim of creating the right conditions for
six “girls in blue” to develop their technique to the highest level.
In relation to this, the FIPAV requested the organization of the 1999 Women’s
European Championships in Rome, where the Italians finished third.
Before that, the best performances at international level were third position
at the 1989 European Championships in Germany and fifth place at the 1998
FIVB World Championship in Japan.
The Italian Women had also ranked fourth in the 1991 and 1993 editions of
the European Championships.
From 2000, the development in Italian Women’s Volleyball has been
impressive. In 2001 Italy claimed their first continental final medal by
winning silver at the European Championships in Varna, Bulgaria.
Three years later, they scooped a silver medal again, this time in the World
Grand Prix.
They were beginning to show consistent signs of the high-quality Volleyball
that was to come.

Japan
Japan finally clinched a berth at the Olympic Games in Beijing at the
FIVB Olympic Qualification Tournament in May by finishing as one
of the best-three teams of the competition, the second successive
qualification for the Olympics for Japan’s squad led by Shoichi
Yanagimoto.
It is five years since Yanagimoto started coaching the Japanese Women
and the forthcoming Summer Games will undoubtedly be the most
crucial competition for him and his squad so far.
Five years ago, Yanagimoto picked young promising players Megumi
Kurihara, Kana Oyama and Saori Kimura and Japan took the FIVB
2003 World Cup by storm. Building on this momentum, the squad
qualified for the Olympics in Athens at the OQT in 2004. Japan had
put a stop to their absence from the Olympics – they missed out in
2000 – but finished in only fifth place.
Since Athens, Yanagimoto’s squad has had its ups and downs, but
key players including team captain Yoshie Takeshita and Miyuki
Takahashi have remained a constant factor and the team has gradually
improved.
In 2006, at the World Championship in Japan, Japan’s squad, as the
organizing country, was under enormous pressure. Despite the loss
to Chinese Taipei at the curtain raiser, Yamagimoto reorganized his
team the following day and it was able to realize its potential. Japan
finished fifth.
In 2007, Megumi Kurihara, the most reliable spiker, made her first
appearance since the Olympic Games in 2004. In September, at the
14th Asian Women’s Championship in Thailand, Japan beat China for
the third time in 24 years, realizing a long-cherished dream.
Yanagimoto and his players know that they have physical
disadvantages, but they compensate for these disadvantages with
excellent teamwork.
Japan have a glittering Olympic history, claiming the first Women’s
Volleyball Olympic gold in Tokyo in 1964 and winning gold again in
Montreal in 1976. In-between those dates, they won silver in Mexico
in 1968 and Munich in 1972. They also won bronze in 1984 in Los
Angeles.

Head Coach
Shoichi Yanagimoto (JPN)
Shoichi Yanagimoto, born in Osaka in 1951, was a
promising setter even in high school and won two
national high school titles. He decided to pursue a
career as a Volleyball player with the New Nippon
Steel team and was selected for Japan’s national
squad, winning gold at the Asian Games in Iran
in 1974, bronze at the World Championship in
Mexico in 1974 and coming fourth in the Olympics
in Montreal in 1976. For four seasons from 1980 to
1984 Yanagimoto played two roles at New Nippon
Steel – as Head Coach and as key setter – and led
his squad to victory in the Japan League. He was
voted Best Coach in 1982.

In spring 2003, Yanagimoto was appointed as
Head Coach of the Japanese Women. Within
eight months his squad had made a remarkable
improvement and finished fifth at the Women’s

In 1985, Yanagimoto was invited to Thailand to

His next goal after the Olympic Games was a good
finish at the World Championship in 2006. Despite
the tough competition schedule, his players played
consistently well and finished fifth.
Since the Olympics in 2004, however, all has not
been smooth sailing for his squad. Whenever key
players left the squad due to injuries, Yanagimoto
has always tried to make his team strong by making
the most of his remaining players’ abilities.

Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan claimed the fourth and final place for the Beijing Games at
the Women’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan in May,
with a last-gasp run of two victories.
The Kazakhs had lost their first five matches, not getting much change
out of Poland, Serbia, Dominican Republic and Japan, although they
did push Puerto Rico to five sets.
All was not lost, though, and Kazakhstan rebounded with two victories
against Korea (3-0) and Thailand (3-1) to finish as the best Asian
finisher out of the top three and claim a spot at the Summer Games.
It was all they deserved after never giving up on their Olympic dream
and they were able to just pip Korea for the golden ticket.
It was made all the sweeter as Korea had beaten Kazakhstan in a
gruelling five-setter in the 2007 Asian Women’s Championship in
Thailand.
Kazakhstan’s place in Beijing is the high point so far for Women’s
Volleyball in the country.
The sport has a strong tradition in Kazakhstan. In the past, Kazakhstan
players have been included in the National Women’s Team of the USSR,
at various times becoming Olympic and World Champions.
After Kazakhstan gained independence, a newly formed National Team
began to represent the country in international competitions organised
by the AVC and FIVB.
The Kazakhstan Women’s National Team qualified for the 2006 FIVB
World Championship in Japan and won the silver medal at the 13th
Asian Women’s Championship.
In 2007, Kazakhstan for the first time appeared in the FIVB World
Grand Prix and finished in 10th place, beating Dominican Republic and
going close to downing Russia in an epic five-set match.
The Kazakhstan Women were a little unlucky in the Asian continental final
in losing to Korea and couldn’t qualify for the 2007 FIVB World Cup.
They took part, though, in the 2008 World Grand Prix.

Poland
Poland clinched a Beijing berth by finishing first at the World Olympic
Qualification Tournament in Tokyo in May ahead of Serbia and Japan –
confirming their place among the world’s elite once more.
The Poles were one of the world’s best in the 1950s and 1960s, winning two
Olympic bronze medals in Tokyo 1964 and Mexico 1968.
They also claimed silver in the FIVB World Championships in 1952 and bronze
in 1956 and 1962.
Silver medals in the European Championships were gathered in 1950, 1951,
1963, 1967, bronze in 1949, 1955, 1958.
Following on from the heady days of the ‘50s and ‘60s, though, there had
not been much success over the years, save for a bronze medal in the 1971
European Championships.
This all changed for the better in 2003.
New Head Coach Ryszard Andrzej Niemczyk, back in the hot seat 26 years
after his first stint, brought a new spirit and gave inspiration to the previously
faithless players of the National Team, somehow inducing them to show their
best on court.
Poland’s rising power was there for all to see during the World Grand Prix
continental tournament in August 2003, when they finished runners-up and
claimed a spot for the 2004 Grand Prix.
The Polish then pulled off a huge surprise during the 2003 European Championships
in Turkey, downing the hosts in straight sets in the Final to claim gold.
The debut of Poland in the FIVB World Cup saw them finish eighth.
In 2005, the Polish defended the European Championship and were working
hard to continue their run of success on the road to the 2006 FIVB World
Championships in Japan where they had hopes for a medal position.
After success, though, came stagnation in 2006 and Poland ended up only
15th at the World Championship.
Head Coach Niemczyk had resigned from his role before the Championships
because of health problems.
He was succeeded by world-famous coach Marco Bonitta. The new Head Coach
strived throughout 2007 to rebuild Poland’s position among the world’s elite.
They claimed fourth place at the European Championships and just missed a
ticket to Beijing at the European Olympic Qualification Tournament in Germany
earlier in the year.

Russia
If statistics are any guide to Women’s Volleyball, Russia – and, before,
the Soviet Union – have to be the greatest team ever. They have won
four Olympic golds (1968, 1972, 1980, 1988) and five Olympic silvers
(1964, 1976, 1992, 2000, 2004), five FIVB World Championship titles
(1952, 1956, 1960, 1970, 1990, 2006), three FIVB World Grand Prix
titles, one World Cup and numerous gold medals in the European
Championships.
Things have not been going so well for the Russians, however, since
that last World Championship win in 2006.
The Russian, who looked so awe-inspiring in winning the 2006 gold in
Tokyo, surprisingly missed out on the medals at the 2007 World Grand
Prix by finishing fourth.
They had flashes of brilliance, notably an epic five-set win against
Brazil that was a repeat of the 2006 worlds final. But it was from
the sublime to the sorry and the Russians capitulated in straight sets
against China.
Russia also missed out on the FIVB World Cup for the second straight
time in 2007 after finishing third at the European Championship.
The biggest shock, though, was when the Russians were unable to
finish in the top four of the European Qualification Tournament for the
World Grand Prix, missing out on a place in the 2008 tournament.
This prolonged absence from international FIVB competition means it
is difficult to judge the Russians’ chances.
They still have a number of tall, lean and formidable players who have
been the trademarks of a team that has dominated over the years.
The lethal Ekaterina Gamova, who stands at an incredible 202 cm,
Yulia Merkulova (also 202 cm) and Elena Godina are perhaps the best
illustration of Russia’s potency and demonstrates the hurdle, both
physical and psychological, that other teams must overcome when
opposing this team.
The last time Russia won Olympic gold was in Seoul in 1988 and 20
years is a long time for a team of Russia’s stature. In the meantime,
the likes of Cuba and Brazil have emerged and at times overshadowed
the Russians but it would be foolish to rule them out in Beijing.

In 2007 Caprara and his team took fourth place
in 2007 World Grand Prix but unfortunately didn’t
qualify for the 2008 edition.
In the 2007 European Championship, his team took
third place which meant Russia wouldn’t appear in the
FIVB World Cup that year. Things got better for Caprara
in 2008, though, when he guided Russia to victory in
the European Olympic Qualification Tournament.

It was the first time a Women’s team from Serbia, including the former
Yugoslavia, had qualified for the Summer Games.
Japan has been good to Serbia. In November 2006 at the FIVB
Women’s World Championships finale in Osaka, the girls in blue got
hold of their first medal on the world stage – the bronze – and were
considered by many the surprise of the whole tournament.
Before the World Championships in Japan, Serbia and Montenegro,
as the team was at the time, had participated only once before in
the World Championships in 1978 under the name of Yugoslavia and
finished 16th.
The Volleyball Federation of Serbia had set the goal of medals for 2007,
but the team of Head Coach Zoran Terzic played brilliantly in the 2006
Championships to beat Italy, Cuba, Peru, Egypt, Turkey, Korea, Poland,
Chinese Taipei and then Italy again in the match for third place.
In a grand celebration, more than 10,000 supporters gave the stars a
fantastic reception in front of the City Hall of Belgrade on their return,
the players hailed as champions for the whole nation.
As a result of many injuries in 2007 among the Serbian players the
team did not qualify for the World Grand Prix 2008, but at the 2007
European Championships in Belgium and Luxemburg, Serbia won the
silver medal and qualified for the first World Cup in the history of
Women’s Volleyball in Serbia.
The result was by far the best result the Serbians had ever achieved
in the European Championships and gave them, for the very first time,
the chance to qualify for the Olympic Games.
At the World Cup in 2007, the Serbians finished fifth, winning seven
matches and losing four, proving their quality once again but missing
out on the top three places that guarantee Olympic qualification.
It came down to the Olympic qualifier in Tokyo and Serbia stormed to
five straight victories to claim the first available Beijing berth, finishing
with a 6-1 win-loss record.

Leading Serbia to two major medals in as many
years has launched the young Zoran Terzic to the
top of the list of successful Women’s Volleyball
coaches.
A bronze medal from the 2006 FIVB World
Championships and silver from the 2007
European Championships means Terzic appears
to be the latest in a long line of promising Head
Coaches who have made the transition from the
Volleyball court to the sidelines.
Terzic, born July 9, 1966, in Belgrade, studied
Physical Education at the Faculty of Physical Culture
in Belgrade, where he graduated in 1998. He played
for the Red Star Club in Belgrade from 1979 until
1986, playing at all levels for the “red-and-whites.”
Terzic stopped playing to continue his studies.
The beginning of his coaching career is tied to
Drago Tomic, former National Team Head Coach of
Yugoslavia, who won bronze with the Senior Men’s
Team at the 1979 European Championship in Paris.
He first worked as an assistant coach with “IMT”
Club Head Coach Goran Nesic in Belgrade. In
1996, he started working for VC “Red Star” as
Coach of their Juniors and won with them all
that could be won, from the Championships of
Belgrade to those of Serbia and Yugoslavia.
*16
As a player, Terzic was a member of the Belgrade
Junior Team that claimed first place in 1985 in
the traditional and international event known as
the “May Tournament of the City of Belgrade,”
and he won it again as coach in 1998.

He never planned to coach girls, but at the
suggestion of Mr. Aleksandar Boricic, (Director
of VC “Crvena Zvezda” (Red Star), President of
the Volleyball Federation of Yugoslavia, Serbia
and Montenegro, and presently Serbia and FIVB
Executive Vice-President) he started helping
coach Senior girls.
This has lasted ever since the end of 2005-2006
season. As a coach of Red Star girls, he snapped
the winning streak of VC “Jedinstvo” from Uzice
in the National Championships and subsequently
replaced Darko Zakoc on the bench of the
National Team in 2002.

Pool A
USA
Team USA accomplished its top season goal by qualifying for the 2008
Olympic Games at the FIVB World Cup held in November 2007 in
Japan.
The Americans opened up the tournament with eight straight victories
highlighted by a five-set rally over Brazil. After a stumble against Serbia
to open the final stage in Nagoya, the U.S. rebounded to sweep host
Japan to secure its ticket to Beijing in 2008.
After dropping a match to Italy in the tournament finale with the ultimate
prize already in hand, the American players proudly wore their World
Cup bronze medals upon leaving Japan.
The U.S. had claimed the silver medal at the NORCECA Continental
Championship to earn a berth into the 2007 FIVB World Cup. Team
USA swept Trinidad & Tobago, Mexico and Dominican Republic during
pool play, then handled host Canada in three sets during the semifinals.
Cuba outlasted the U.S. 22-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 18-16 to win the
gold medal.
Before the World Cup, Head Coach “Jenny” Lang Ping assembled a
veteran roster for the FIVB World Grand Prix after evaluating the college
players and relatively new players to the international scene.
However, the U.S. Women’s National Team faced a daunting task to
qualify for the FIVB World Grand Prix Finals through three weekends
of preliminary action in three distinct locations: Rzeszow, Poland,
Khabarovsk, Russia, and Macau, China.
Team USA finished seventh at the conclusion of the three World
Grand Prix preliminary round weekends with a 5-4 record, just out of
qualification for the Finals Round.
The American squad held destiny in its own hands up to the final day of
preliminary matches, but lost to Netherlands in four sets in a match that
guaranteed the winner a berth in the Final Round.
Americans hopes are high, though, ahead of Beijing. They’ve been close
to Olympic gold before, winning silver in 1984 in Los Angeles and bronze
at Barcelona 1992. But apart from gold in the 2001 World Grand Prix
the USA have never claimed one of the “big” titles (They went close with
silver at the 2002 World Championships).
Now may be the time to remedy this.

Known as the “Iron Hammer” during her playing days,
Lang Ping, 44, was inducted into the Volleyball Hall
of Fame as a player on Oct. 18, 2002, culminating an
incredible career that saw her establish herself as one
of the finest female players ever.
Lang Ping was a member of the Chinese Women’s
National Team that won an Olympic gold medal at
the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, a World
Championship crown in 1982 and World Cup titles in
1981 and 1985.
Revered by Chinese fans, Lang Ping has been
honoured with her own postage stamp, had her
wedding broadcast on Chinese national television and
has stadiums named after her in China.
She later became a well-respected coach in multiple
countries. From 1987-1989 and 1992-1993 Lang Ping
was assistant coach at the University of New Mexico.
From 1993-1995 she was the head coach of the

Venezuela
It has been a struggle for the Venezuelan Women’s National Team to get
where they are now, namely at their first-ever Olympic Games.
Along the way of a four-year program to prepare for the Beijing Games, there
were tough times. Many Venezuelan Volleyball players have a tendency to
migrate or drop out at the early stages of the training process.
The fact that this group has stuck together pays testament to their
youthful spirit.
Venezuela have developed an impressive amount of fight in their play
over the last couple of years and this bore fruit at the South American
Olympic qualifier in Lima, Peru, at the start of this year.
Venezuela beat the home team in the last game of the tournament to
clinch their Beijing berth, prevailing against Peru 3-2 (25-22, 25-27, 2522, 22-25, 15-12). In that game, players such as captain Jayce Andrade
impressed and it was Yessica Paz who was the hero with a perfect block to
clinch the match in front of 6,000 Peruvian fans.
In the first set the visiting team led the score most of the time, with
a great performance of the spikers. Despite Peruvians efforts, Andrade
closed the set 25-22.
In the second set the two teams put up a fight point by point and both
teams played very good Volleyball. Peru won 27-25 and kept believing in
the victory.
The story of the third set was similar to the first one. Venezuela confidence
kept growing and the visiting team led the score 13-8. Peru tried to react,
and tied 13-13. The match continued until an exciting 20-20 draw, but
Venezuela was very comfortable and closed the set 25-22.
Peru returned on the court acting more offensive. The spikers showed
a good technique and brought their team ahead in the set. But soon,
Venezuela reacted and won 25-22 taking the game to the tie break, which
Paz clinched.
A combination of discipline and training have sculpted the strength of
the Venezuelan team. With a tall squad and a young average age, they
are in a good position to be a dominant team in South America over
the coming years.
The achievement of reaching the Olympics is another boost for the team and
with nothing to lose on their first outing they may spring a few surprises.

He has been more successful this time around.
Fernandez, born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, is a
teacher of physical education and after coaching
Cuban youth teams and regional estate teams he
arrived in Venezuela for the first time in 1995.
He set up a promising Venezuelan Women’s
team before returning to Cuba to continue with
his work as the school Volleyball coach in Pinar
del Rio.

There were several attempts to bring him back
to Venezuela and finally he returned. Since
then, he has built an impressive squad that has
played in the South American Championships,
Pan American Games, Central American Games
and Pan American Cups.
World Grand Prix
His crowning achievement so far, though, is
leading the team to qualification for Olympic
Games for the first time, the team winning the
South American qualifier in Lima, Peru.
Grand Champions Cup
World Cup
A lot of confidence and trust has been placed
on the shoulders of Fernandez and so far he
has repaid this by creating an excitement
surrounding Women’s Volleyball in Venezuela
not seen before. Indeed, he has moulded a
strong, disciplined group who have shown the
desire to improve their game even more and
become one of the best teams in the world.

Follow the Stars
www.fivb.org
Sheilla Tavares Castro (BRA)
Sheilla, or Sheilla Tavares Castro to give
her full name, is one of the more decorated
stars of Volleyball thanks to her spell in
the Brazilian team that has enjoyed a
purple patch over the last few years.
In 2005, she was in the team that conquered
the South American Championship, FIVB
Grand Champions Cup (where she was
elected best player) and FIVB World Grand
Prix. The World Grand Prix victory sticks in
Sheilla’s mind for the epic five-set victory
against Italy that claimed the crown. “It
was a very important result for us. Every
one was young and to arrive in Brazil and
see everyone believe in our team was
good,” says Sheilla, who played a starring
role that day.
In 2006 she won the World Grand Prix and
was also chosen as the competition’s MVP.
The 185-cm Sheilla was born in Belo
Horizonte, although she doesn’t get to
see her hometown much. “I stay there
only 20 days a year. I like it so much but
I play in Italy and after my National Team
commitments I don’t stay there much.”
Zhang Xian (CHN)
The 23-year-old Zhang Xian began her
Volleyball career in the Fujian provincial
Women’s Volleyball team. At that point,
though, Zhang played the role of wing
spiker and not libero, even though she
is only 1.67 metres tall. Because of her
height, Zhang found it hard to get used
to the team’s strategy and was forced to
leave. Too short to attract attention from
other teams in her position as wing spiker,
Zhang thought of retiring from the sport.
After a while, Zhang was lucky enough to
be recruited by another provincial team,
the Southwestern province of Yunnan,
and this is where she started playing in
current position of libero. Zhang is perfect
for the position. She has the right physical
attributes, fast movement, is quick in
action, has a sense of defense and is
brimming with energy while on court.
Zhang joined the National Team for the
first time in March 2007 and just a few
months later was named best digger, best
receiver and best libero in the 2007 FIVB
Grand Prix Finals.
Simona Gioli (ITA)
Simona Gioli is a fantastic and determined
athlete. Just 14 months after giving birth to
her son, Gabriele, the middle blocker won
FIVB World Cup gold in 2007. Not only that,
she scooped the Most Valuable Player award
in the process. All this after a tough season
with Club Perugia.
Her fans in Perugia call her “Mamma Fast,”
because of her lightning-quick attacks and
recent addition to the family.
This “Mamma” wears the No. 17 shirt,
unlucky for Italians like 13 is for some
others, not that her career has seen too
many unlucky moments.
64
Three months after the birth, Gioli was back
on court and she admits motherhood has
changed her.
“I’m sweeter, less impulsive, and calmer,”
she says, “but I’m still stubborn.”
Amazingly, Gioli was overlooked somewhat
when Marco Bonitta was in charge. She
missed the Athens Olympics as a result.
She has retained that stubborness, though,
meaning she has been determined to make
it to this Olympics.
“I would represent Italy even as a mascot,”
she says.
Katarzyna Skowronska-Dolata (POL)
Katarzyna Skowronska-Dolata has her
parents to thank somewhat for passing
on the height and skills for top-level
Volleyball and her brother’s girlfriend for
her first break in the sport.
Her mother played Volleyball at school,
while her father was a high-jumper. Her
brother’s girlfriend played for Warsaw Skra
and noticed that Skowronska was very tall
and introduced her to a Volleyball coach.
She took to the game immediately and left
home at 15 to play fulltime in Sosnowiec
at a sports school. It was the start of a
transformation from very good middle
blocker into a world-class receiver and
probably the best spiker in the world.
“Carpe diem,” is how Skowronska, who
plays for Sant Orsola Asystel Novara in
italy, sums up her philosophy on life and
it has served her well in seizing every day
like it will be her last. Perhaps this lust
for life goes a little way to explaining her
tattoo on her shoulder. One thing she has
refused, though, is an offer from a famous
magazine to pose as a model.
Ekaterina Gamova (RUS)
Ekaterina Gamova stands at 202 cm, a
giant in the world of Women’s Volleyball
and in the Russian National Team. The
player from the Uralochka Club in Russia
is a pillar in attack and defence, using her
immense height to great effect. Her height
alone has her standing clear of any of her
team-mates by six centimetres – apart
from Yulia Merkulova who is the same
height – and she makes full use of it. Her
frame might not be the most robust but
underestimate her at your peril.
She had her first taste of the Olympics in
2000 so this will be her third outing at this
level, after winning silver in Sydney and
2004 in Athens.
Gamova was also a key part of the Russian
team that won gold at the 2006 FIVB World
Championship in Japan. She also won silver
at the 2006 FIVB World Grand Prix.
The 27-year-old Gamova, who plays for
Russian Club Dinamo Moscow, has a spike
height of 321 cm and block of 310.
Gamova’s home town is Ekatrinburg, a
place quite a few of the Russian’s Women’s
team call their home town.
Tayyiba Haneef-Park (USA)
Tayyiba Haneef-Park emerged as a force
to be reckoned with on the left side after
she made the switch from opposite to
outside hitter early in 2005.
With Athens Olympics outside hitters
Logan Tom, Keba Phipps, Tara CrossBattle and Ogonna Nnamani all absent
from the National Team for a variety of
reasons (Beach Volleyball, retirement
and illness), Haneef-Park soon became
a factor in her new position and played
a key role as the USA captured the
silver medal at the season-ending FIVB
World Grand Champions Cup in Japan in
November 2005. The 200-cm Haneef-Park,
29, started playing for the National Team
in 2001.
Haneef-Park played for Russian Club
Kazanuchka Kazan during the 2007 season
and is currently with Eczacibasi Istanbul in
Turkey.
Haneef-Park’s jumping ability is helped by the
fact that she was a three-time All-American
high jumper at Long Beach State University.
Indeed, she competed at the 2000 U.S.
Olympic Track and Field Trials, finishing 10th
with a jump of nearly 180 cm.
