Tryout Information
2015-2016
About Dance Team
The award-winning Kamiak High School Dulcineas perform at pep assemblies, football
and basketball halftimes, competitions, and parades. In addition to dance technique,
members learn teamwork, time management, commitment, and choreography skills.
Our captains choreograph most routines. A few on our team have not had formal dance
training, though it is, of course, a definite asset.
The dance team performs at football and basketball halftimes, pep assemblies,
parades, local dance competitions, Districts, and the State Championships. The team
takes a major trip every three years. Past travel has included the 1997 Presidential
Inauguration; the 2000 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland; the 2003 Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City; a 2006 New Year’s Day parade in Paris,
France; the 2009 Washington, D.C., Cherry Blossom Festival; and the 2015 Citrus Bowl
Parade in Orlando, Florida.
From September through March, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and evenings need
to be reserved for practices. Performances are typically scheduled for Friday evenings
and Saturdays. Work schedules and social plans must be arranged around the
practice and performance schedule. Do not try out if you are unable or unwilling
to meet this time commitment.
I anticipate choosing a team of approximately 32 members for the 2015-2016 school
year. Dance Team members must enroll in Dance & Choreography where they can earn
either PE or Fine Arts credit for their participation. They may also letter in this sport. The
Dulcineas are a very successful competitive team, which requires dedication and
commitment from every member.
Please read through this packet carefully, and complete all the necessary paperwork by
the deadlines, if you decide that you would like to be a member of this award-winning
team!

Prior to clinics, candidates should submit the blue teacher recommendation forms in this
packet to all of their teachers. Any candidate who receives unacceptable (i.e., 2 or 1 ranking
in any category/any grades lower than a C) endorsements will not be considered for a
position on the team, regardless of talent or experience on the team.
Also prior to clinics, each candidate must complete the application form in the packet. Bring
the completed application form to the clinics or to Ms. Noonan in Room 315.
The first clinic will begin with additional information for candidates, and there will be an
opportunity for candidates to ask questions.
If you have a current physical report, please bring it. A physical is required, and is “good” for
two years. District Physicals are Thursday, May 21, from 6-8PM, in the KHS gym. Cost: $25
Arrive promptly and dressed appropriately (clean, neat, nonrestrictive clothing).
Hair should be off the face.
Bring bottled water to the clinics.
This year's co-captain will teach a short (approx. 1-1/2 minutes long) dance routine, which
will be primarily jazz-based, but which may include elements from both hip-hop and ballet.
Expect the following basic elements to be incorporated into the routine: leaps, turns (chaine,
pique, and pirouette), straight kicks, splits. (If you are unfamiliar with some of the technique
listed above, an experienced dancer will work with you.)
Candidates are free to leave following their auditions. Tryouts are closed to spectators.
The judges will determine whether or not each candidate is able to learn the routine and perform it
with confidence and skill. Candidates will try out two at a time, and will have two opportunities to
show their routine to the judges. After a candidate has performed the dance routine, he/she may
choose to demonstrate any other specialized skill. (Fouette turns, turns in seconde, leaps,
double/triple pirouettes, or some other skill of the candidate’s choosing would be among the
options.) A well-executed demonstration can increase the candidate’s General Execution score.
Candidates should report at 3:15PM to the Kamiak main gym, dressed to audition!
All candidates currently enrolled in the school district must audition on Thursday.
Good Luck!!!
