Dear Friends:
As the new chairman of Waveny Care Network’s board of directors, I want to thank all of you for your ongoing
generous support.
In 2006, Waveny celebrated two anniversaries: New Canaan Inn reached its 25th and The Village marked its 5th. These
milestones remind us of how fortunate we are to have so many loyal and passionate supporters of our mission. This
good fortune is evident in the achievement of our fundraising goals and the commitment of over 600+ volunteers who
collectively devote more than 18,000 hours of their time each year toward brightening the lives of our residents and
patients. Waveny thrives because of benefactors like you.
For more than 30 years, Waveny has been offering older adults from New Canaan and the surrounding communities a
valuable and comprehensive resource for healthy aging. Our continuum provides independent retirement living at
New Canaan Inn, assisted living for people with memory loss at The Village, and skilled nursing at Waveny Care
Center. These facilities are complemented by the services and benefits provided through our Adult Day Program, the
Drs. Charlotte & David Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic, our Geriatric Care Management team and our Rehabilitation
Services. The Care Center and The Village also offer respite and hospice care programs.
As always, we give special thanks to our Development Committee for championing another successful annual appeal that
raised funds to build a sky bridge between the second floors of the Care Center and The Village. This vital connection
between the two buildings will provide immediate safety benefits to our most medically compromised patients and
residents. We hope to complete the sky bridge by October 2007.
We also want to thank all of our committee members, volunteers, sponsors, participants and raffle prize donors for
making our fourth annual “Swinging for Seniors” golf and tennis outing a major fundraising success. This exciting
event has proven to be a fun and wonderful way to raise money for Waveny’s financial assistance program, which helps
residents and patients who cannot afford the full cost of their care at the Care Center, The Village and New Canaan Inn.
Finally, on behalf of the Waveny Care Network staff and board members, I want to thank you all again for another great
year. We appreciate and value your support, and we promise to continue to deliver the quality of care and service you
expect from us.

Fourth Annual “Swinging for Seniors” Golf & Tennis Outing
Waveny’s fourth annual “Swinging for Seniors” golf and tennis
fundraising event was held on May 22, 2006 at the Country Club of
New Canaan.
Thanks to the generous support from our golfers, tennis players and
sponsors, the outing was both fun and a financial success. A special
thanks is also extended to our golf co-chairs Judy Bentley and
Charlie Parker, our tennis co-chairs Chris Smith and David Moran,
and our dedicated raffle coordinator Julianne Grace. We are also
indebted to our “Swinging for Seniors” committee members for their
enthusiasm and hard work, and to our exceptional event volunteers.
Without everyone swinging in the same direction, year after year,
this extraordinary fundraising day would not be possible.

Honoring Those Who Honor Us
Each year, Waveny typically honors an individual donor and a corporate
contributor at its annual donor recognition reception. However, when
exceptional gifts are received, we gladly make exceptions. Thus, in
addition to celebrating the 25th anniversary of New Canaan Inn and the
5th anniversary of The Village, we had the pleasure of acknowledging the
significant contributions of Mr. and Mrs. John Burns and Legacy Society
member Mrs. Ruth K. Hilbert, who was posthumously recognized for her
altruism and generous bequest.

It was our honor to posthumously recognize the generosity of Legacy Society member, Mrs. Ruth Kimbrough Hilbert.
Leaving us the largest bequest Waveny has ever received, Mrs. Hilbert’s planned gift was especially meaningful because
she spent the last year of her life in our care at New Canaan Inn, The Village and the Care Center. Mrs. Hilbert’s bequest
was like a warm hug to thank the people who helped her maintain quality of life throughout our continuum. By leaving this
legacy gift, Mrs. Hilbert has helped to ensure that future generations will also benefit from the quality of care we provide
through Waveny Care Network.

Thanks to the overwhelming response and generosity of
our loyal and growing family of donors, our 2006 annual
fund drive raised the $350,000 needed to build a sky bridge
between the second floors of The Village and Care Center.
The sky bridge will provide a vital connection between
the two facilities and offer immediate benefits to our
patients and residents, the majority of whom have some
form of memory loss and ambulatory issues. If needed,
the passageway will allow for the safe and expeditious
evacuation of one building to an alternate safety zone. It
will also provide the one-and-only Care Center elevator
that is over 30 years old with two much-needed backup
elevators in The Village.

Recognizing Our Grantors
We are indebted to several organizations that awarded generous grants to Waveny in 2006.
•
The Carey Children’s Fund provided a gift to purchase and install a
retractable awning for one of the Care Center’s large patios so therapeutic
recreation activities can safely take place outside during nice weather
without exposing our patients and residents to the sun. This grant was
awarded through the New Canaan Community Foundation.
• The Exchange Club of New Canaan Foundation, Inc. provided funds to
support our therapeutic recreation programs for our patients and residents
at the Care Center and The Village as well as our Adult Day Program
participants.
• The Jeniam Foundation provided funds to purchase an electric hi-lo standin table for our Inpatient Rehabilitation Therapy room, which will benefit
the hundreds of patients we treat who have difficulty standing on their own
due to injury, illness, surgery or other medical complication. This grant was
awarded through the New Canaan Community Foundation.

• In addition to volunteering their time, the New Canaan High School
Service League of Boys donated funds to support our ongoing therapeutic
recreation programs.
• The New Canaan Sewing Group awarded funds to purchase two
state-of-the-art high/low rise patient beds, which offer the greatest safety
and functionality for our patients with dementia at the Care Center.
• The Newcomers Club of New Canaan provided funds for our ongoing
music and creative arts programs that offer therapeutic benefits to our
patients and residents while giving them the opportunity to sing, create
and enjoy themselves.
• Continuing its annual funding, the Southwestern Connecticut Agency
on Aging, Inc. provided monies for a State-sponsored aide position to
work with Adult Day participants with Alzheimer’s disease.
• The Young Women’s League of New Canaan awarded funds to
underwrite the cost of a yearlong health and wellness program that was
designed to enhance the quality of life for New Canaan Inn residents.
The program includes a lecture series on health issues given by a nurse
practitioner, nutritional counseling with a registered dietician, and yoga
instruction.

Waveny experienced a 7.5% increase in fiscal 2006 patient and resident service revenue over the prior year. This growth
represents Waveny’s ongoing commitment to serving the growing needs of older adults in New Canaan and the surrounding
communities.
Fiscal 2006 revenue growth can primarily be attributed to an increase in assisted living residency at The Village and the
ongoing expansion of our outpatient services, especially our Adult Day Program. As always, the Care Center and
New Canaan Inn continued to provide quality care and services at very high occupancy levels.
Given Waveny Care Center’s mission to serve people without regard to their source of payment, patient income was
significantly offset ($2,439,791) by the amount of money that Medicare and Medicaid discounted their payments to us.
Fortunately, the cost of this uncompensated care is partially offset by the generous contributions and support from our
donors. While we do plan for this shortfall each year, we experienced an increase in our Medicaid census last year.
Reflecting our ongoing commitment to providing quality care, wages and benefits remained our largest expense and
rose 3.6% over the prior year as we continued to attract and retain qualified talent while maintaining industry-leading
staff-to-patient and -resident ratios. A 12.1% increase in our “medical supplies, drugs, food and other” expense category
over the prior year can largely be attributed to a 32% rise in energy costs.
Our non-operating income was a healthy $1,056,099 thanks to the ongoing generosity of our loyal donors as well as
favorable conditions in the financial markets. Contribution income was higher in the prior year due to a significant bequest
received from one of our Legacy Society members.
While we experienced a net operating loss of ($692,592), depreciation accounted for $862,931 of expenses; thus, we
returned to a positive cash position of $170,339 for the first time since The Village opened in fiscal year 2002. As our
programs continue to grow and mature, we expect to significantly reduce the operating deficit in fiscal 2007 and return to
an operational surplus by fiscal 2008.
