Rules of Golf and Handicapping Seminar
We welcome any news or items of
interest from all club groups. Please
contact the office at 871-3111 with
your items for the newsletter by the
15th of the month.
More than 80 people attended the March 14 Golf Seminar, presented
by the Greater Cincinnati Golf Association (GCGA).
A big thank you to Art Fischer for all of his efforts to make this event
a success!
From the President
Can you believe this weather? By now, I am sure that you have been to the
course and hit a few balls. Opening Day at the Club is only a few days away!! The
Masters is less than two weeks away! The Drehs Cup is less than two months
away! The zoysia is trying to turn green already! 2012 promises to be one of the best
years at the Club. The golf schedule is loaded with several new events. The social
calendar is packed, including several new parties. You may have noticed the improvements to the interior of the Club, and these improvements will continue for a few more
months as new carpet, furniture and exercise equipment will be delivered. The best
news of all…we are under budget!
Hyde Park Country Club is really a special place. We have a lot to offer, whether a business meeting
in the Board Room or a graduation dinner, a porch dinner outside, or just “hanging” in the Donald Ross
room after a golf game on a Friday afternoon with your buds. For new members this year, I know that you
will find the Hyde Park community easy to meet and get to know people. We were all new members once,
so I ask the “old timer” members to try to include the newer members in your events. The Hyde Park
Country Club community is a sense of family, friends and neighbors that support each other. There is no
other Club like ours in Cincinnati that has our sense of belonging.
Celebrate the beginning of spring with us at Hyde Park Country Club and make this a year to
remember at your Club!
Ron...
From the General Manager
Dear Member,
Change, alteration, modification, adjustment and different …these are words that can strike fear in the most
accomplished of persons.
Throughout our life, we constantly invoke change to improve a task, career, golf swing, relationship etc. When we
initiate these adjustments, our attitude towards the variation is, typically, far more positive than the times when they
are chosen or performed for us. Call that common reaction human nature, personality or comfort, but regardless, adaptation and improvement is a necessity in successful relationships, life, business and yes, even Country Clubs.
Chef Ralph has instituted a new Ala Carte menu that has received awesome reviews by many members. However, as anticipated, there have
been a few concerns voiced regarding the “change.” Ralph is infusing new life into the food aspect of your Club, but with the knowledge
and understanding that the menu is not etched in stone but on paper, and will require modifications once dislikes / likes,
popular / not
popular are figured out. Chef Ralph is asking for your honest input as he genuinely desires to offer you, the member, what you want at your
Club.
You may notice old favorites not on the menu, but please ask your server if the kitchen can prepare you what you have always
ordered. Nine times out of ten, the kitchen staff has the ingredients to do so and is more than happy to fulfill your request.
It appears Mother Nature has donned her summer wardrobe early, yet we know having lived in Cincinnati long enough, that wardrobe can
quickly morph back into sweaters, jackets and mittens. Regardless, staff is busy scrambling to accommodate the opening of amenities and
facilities much earlier than typically planned. Please be patient as this transformation occurs.
A friendly reminder to make sure your email address is current with the Club, as the season is quickly approaching for Club emails to begin
churning out regarding golf, tennis, swimming, events, etc. Also, if you would like to receive this Newsletter electronically, please contact
Karen at the Club, 871-3111 or [email protected] and she will remove you from the mail list. (Club website access is always
available to view the current month Newsletter as well as past months and print from there if necessary).
Thank you.

Also, as a reminder, you may want to consider Hole-in-One Insurance for Hyde Park golfing members and their families. All golfers wishing to participate can sign up with Sandi in the accounting office or the golf pro shop at any point in the season for a start up cost of $5.00.
Once you make that elusive hole-in-one, you will receive the entire amount collected as follows: 50% is credited to the member’s club account, helping to defray the cost of the bar tab, which is automatically opened when the ace is made. The remaining 50% is awarded to you
in the form of a Golf Pro Shop merchandise certificate. The hole-in-one must be made from regulation tees to regular green. Don’t be
caught without this invaluable coverage. For those members that have had insurance in the past, you are automatically enrolled unless you
tell us otherwise.
Don’t forget to watch for your weekly email notice, “This Week in Golf,” which will provide a listing of the week’s golf activities as well as
useful reminders and explanations of new events and activities.
Finally, everyone should review their 2012 Membership Roster Book or www.hydeparkcc.com for information pertaining to guest privileges, play schedule, special events, junior golf, dress codes and general etiquette. One rule reminder is that jeans are not permitted on the golf
course, driving range or putting green. A cart rule to remember for those members with small children: no one under the age of 16 is permitted to operate a golf cart. A review of the Membership Book and web site will answer most questions regarding club policy and help us
avoid any possible uncomfortable situations.

Suggested Golf Reading
From the HPGCC Golf Librarian’s Corner
The Caddie Who Knew Ben Hogan
a novel by:
John Coyne
Over the holidays, a friend was kind enough to bring me a golf book he thought might make for interesting reading. It was indeed a pleasure
to read The Caddie Who Knew Ben Hogan, written by John Coyne. Mr. Coyne has written several books of fiction and non-fiction. Four of
the books he has written pertain specifically to the subject of golf.
Typical of most novels, though, the book starts out somewhat slowly. However, Mr. Coyne was able to weave a very interesting story of
one boy, Jack, who was lucky enough to be in the right spot at the right time to meet, and caddy for, Bantam Ben. And then there was Matt,
who fatally sacrifices his promising golf career for the love of a young girl. All of this with multiple references to golf history of the late
40’s. I will say, from what I have learned over the years, Mr. Coyne is indeed very knowledgeable about Ben Hogan.
I’m not going to kid you. Probably because of his college professor analytical mind, Coyne won’t be confused with Fitzgerald, Steinbeck or
Hemingway, (Ernest that is). This book is, however, a quick read and entertaining. If you want to refresh your knowledge about “The Wee
Ice Man”, I would recommend this book.
While the temperatures have been unseasonably warm, the true harbinger of spring, for golfers that is, is The Masters. You may wish to log
on to The Masters website and check out the “treasure trove” of history about the tournament. Enjoy The Masters and have a wonderful
golf season.
Around the Grounds
Dear Members:
March has come and gone with no real sign of winter in the near future. It is hard to believe that the spring aerification
has been completed on the putting surfaces. The turf should heal exceptionally well with the anticipated above normal
temperatures forecasted. As noted from last month, the winter projects have been completed and we have shifted gears to
into the maintenance mode. In fact, this is the first time since I have been at Hyde Park that we have mowed the Zoysia fairways in March.
Over the next couple weeks, the Grounds Staff will be continuing to focus on the conditioning of the golf course and grounds. We look
forward to seeing everyone on the course very soon.
For the latest updates on golf course conditions and projects you can follow us on Twitter @pobrienhpgcc and the Grounds Department
Blog: www.hydeparkgolfandcountryclub.blogspot.com.
Thank-you,
Pat O’Brien
Grounds Superintendent
From the Chef
Hello to all the members here at Hyde Park Country Club.
I would like to introduce all the members to some exciting dining
options that we have coming up for the upcoming season. Starting in
April, we have a chef’s table being offered to all members that want to experience dining in
the kitchen at their club. For up to ten members and guests you will dine in the kitchen
during club operation hours where you will taste some great food selections and at the same
time see your club staff 312 in action behind the scenes. You will be served by the chef and his staff from wine and
beverage service, to all food courses. Reservations are required, and this event is available on Friday and Saturday.
Also starting in April on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, we will be offering chef’s tasting menu in the Club
Room for members and there guest. There will be a selection of four course, five course or six course dinners, and
our bar manager Les Hemingway will pair wines for your dining experience. I look forward to meeting all the
members at this fantastic club, and please tell me of some of your favorite items that you would like to see here at the
club for lunch or dinner. I will try to do my best to make your experience an enjoyable one.
Thank you and have a great upcoming season here at Hyde Park.

FITNESS 101
by Paul Bodenbach
I am very proud to announce my recent certification as a golf performance specialist in the prestigious Nike 360 golf performance program
powered by the Gray Institute. This certification puts me in elite company with some of the best golf instructors and performance specialists
in the world. The program is a partnership between Nike and The Gray Institute which is world renowned as the leader in Applied Functional Science. They are considered the foremost leader in athletic performance, injury prevention and rehabilitation in the fitness /rehabilitation
industry. The certification is a compilation of 21 hours of on-line instruction and 20 hours of intense on-site instruction. The program is a
detailed study of the actual biomechanics of the golf swing and the reasons for the compensations that plague all of us at one time or another. Moreover, it has provided me with the knowledge of how to assess everyone individually to correct problems specific to them instead of
compiling compensations upon compensations as has been the norm.
So how does this help you as a golfer at Hyde Park? As a member, you now posses a resource to figure out the physical reasons hampering
your performance on the golf course. Why can’t you get the club in position at the top of your backswing? Is it in your hips, low back,
shoulders or maybe ankles? Why can’t you generate the club head speed you would like in the hitting zone? Why is your balance bad during
the follow through? Then, once the cause of the problem is identified, it can be systematically conditioned and trained in order to correct it.
A key aspect of the Nike 360 program powered by The Gray institute is that the assessment and training for the golf swing utilizes golf
swing mechanics and not some assessment and training process totally foreign to what you want to accomplish in golf performance. It
looks like and feels like golf.
I am personally very passionate about golf. . . almost as much as I am about being a great trainer. I can easily relate to the problems that
everyone has in trying to master the golf swing. I’ve done everything incorrectly at one time or another. As a trainer, I continue to strive to
be at the cutting edge of knowledge in order to help those I am fortunate to serve. Coach Bill Bowerman is quoted as saying "If you have a
body, you’re an athlete.” Allow me to help you enhance your golf athleticism in order for you to play better and enjoy the game more completely.

Remember the days of Beverly Hills Supper Club, or the Lookout House? They had some great
shows back in the day. Mark your calendars for Saturday night, April 28th for our night on Broadway.
Teresa de Zarn will be here at your club performing many tunes from Broadway musicals from the
past to present. Teresa is a big name professional performer in New York and has been on Broadway
in performances like The King and I, Phantom of the Opera, Showboat and the Mystery of Edwin
Drood (Rosa Bud).
This will be an exceptional evening starting with drinks in the Old Main Bar, followed by a lovely sit-down dinner and a
good hour and a half performance by Teresa de Zarn. Wait a minute-there is more. Mary Lou Boylan will accompany
Teresa on the piano during the performance. Afterward, there will be a sing along in the Center Lounge, and everyone is
encouraged to join in.
Chef Ralph Cippillo has created a lovely three course menu. The entire package is only $49.99 per person. This is the
first time we have had an event like this at the club for several years. This will be a very enjoyable evening at your Club.
The menu is noted below:
FIRST COURSE
Classic Chop Salad
With tomato, cucumber, apple wood smoked bacon, Maytag blue cheese, and hard boiled egg with a
zesty bleu cheese dressing.
SECOND COURSE
Tuscany Chicken
Cast iron seared chicken breast with marinated artichoke hearts, oven roasted roma tomatoes, caramelized shallots,
Kalamata olives, and asparagus tips served over portabella stuffed ravioli with a red wine demi sauce.
THIRD COURSE
House Made Tiramisu with Infused Amaretto Cream.
A night of first class entertainment, great food and libations for only $49.99 per person is a deal the Lookout House or
Beverly Hills Supper Club couldn’t even match back in the day. Come out to the club on Saturday night, April 28th and
enjoy an evening at your club.
