Brookgreen’s nationallyrecognized Anne Edens Rainey
Master Sculptor Program annually
comprises multiple residencies,
workshops, public lectures,
demonstrations, and members’
events. Since 2010, this important
initiative has been generously
supported by John S. Rainey,
Brookgreen's Chairman Emeritus,
in honor of his wife, Anne Edens
Rainey. “The Rainey gift allows
us to reach out to sculptors and
sculpture students from as far away
as Tasmania, spreading the word
about Brookgreen Gardens and
its treasures,” said Robin Salmon,
Brookgreen’s Vice President of

and Curator of Sculpture “It is
especially appropriate since Anne
Rainey has had a deep appreciation
for the beauty of the natural world
and the artistic world.”
Anne Edens Rainey has
devoted much of her life to
making the places she sees

Master Sculptor
Program was
created in 2003.
During the past decade,
it has brought many of our
nation’s leading figurative
sculptors to Brookgreen
Gardens for residencies on
the property. In addition
to relaxing, reflecting,
and working on individual
projects, the artists also
share their knowledge
and vision by conducting
sculpture workshops and
by presenting public
programs such as lectures and
sculpting demonstrations.

She served as chairman of
the Palmetto Conservation
Foundation (1999-2001)
and significantly expanded its
signature project, The Palmetto
Trail, South Carolina’s longest
cycling and pedestrian trail
that will ultimately run some
425 miles from the mountains
to the sea. During her tenure,
Anne guided the process that
put in place the largest corporate
conservation easement in
South Carolina’s history, 6,000
acres donated by Nucor Steel,
as well as easements for the
Camden Polo Field and three
Revolutionary War battlefields:
Camden, Blackstock, and

An accomplished Master
Gardener, her gardens at the
Raineys’ homes in Pawleys Island,
the Vail Valley of Colorado, and
their former home in Columbia,
have been recognized for their
beauty and certified by the
National Wildlife Federation as
Backyard Wildlife Habitats. Anne
was interviewed in the garden
of their Colorado home for a
2001 HGTV series, “The Secret
Gardens of Vail,” featuring three
outstanding private gardens in the
Vail Valley. Anne’s interest in the
natural world of the Vail Valley
extended to historic preservation,
and she envisioned and founded
with John the Cordillera
Anne in her Columbia, SC garden
Preservation Foundation,
which successfully restored and
preserved several “Old West”
structures in the valley.
In 2006, John established
“Anne’s Garden” at USC’s
Arnold School of Public Health
in the heart of Columbia in
honor of his wife. “Named
for the love of my life …
whose love of gardening has
transformed the world around
her,” said John. The garden was
unveiled at the dedication of the
Public Health Research Center
as a surprise for Anne. Its
centerpiece is a bronze fountain
called Las Palomas, translated
from Spanish as “The Doves”
and epitomizing the image
of hope, which was designed
by fellow Brookgreen Trustee
Sandy Scott, one of the nation’s
premiere wildlife sculptors.
In 2008, Anne received the
BMW Conservation Award,
recognizing her life-time
contributions toward the
preservation and enhancement of
South Carolina’s natural beauty.

and financier Bernard Baruch,
who was of Jewish ancestry
and an adviser to six presidents
from Woodrow Wilson to John

John and Anne Rainey’s love
of art and gardens and their
generous philanthropy have
had a significant impact on
Brookgreen Gardens and on the

Experiencing
Gullah Geechee
Culture at Brookgreen Gardens
by Ronald Daise, Vice President for Creative Education
Gullah Geechee culture is many
things to many people. A feeling.
The ebb and flow of meandering
tidal inlets and creeks etched
forever with hand-dug canals
along abandoned rice fields. The
rhythmic speech ways spoken by
residents of coastal communities
of the Southeastern United States.
Forgotten and pained memories of
slave cabins, cotton fields, indigostained hands, and backbreaking field
labor. Pots full of rice and captivating
aromas of steamed crabs, fried
shrimp, butterbeans, and gravy. A
surge of pride in connecting with the
St. Helena Island, South Carolinahome-town roots of American
Idol’s 2013 winner Candice Glover
or watching the Gullah Geechee
Commission’s float during the 2013
Presidential Inaugural Parade. Hands
outstretched to clap, clap-clap-clap
or to place personal effects upon
a deceased family member’s grave.
Day-to-day life.
In 2002, the Brookgreen Gardens
Board of Directors expanded
the organization’s mission to
include historical programs and
interpretation. Since then, the
presentation of local and regional
Gullah heritage has informed and
intrigued numerous Brookgreen
visitors.
“Enslaved Africans contributed a
significant culture to the lands now
known as Brookgreen Gardens,” said
Bob Jewell, Brookgreen’s President
and CEO. “About 500 once lived on
Brookgreen Plantation. The former
rice fields where they labored, the
very grounds which cover the Street
~8~
A rice field trunk, gift from the Historical Ricefields Association
where they lived, and their burial
grounds are important areas of our
country’s history. It is imperative
for our visitors that we interpret that
rich history well, and also the history
of their descendants, the Gullah
Geechee people.”
I came aboard as Vice President
for Creative Education in 2004.
Believe it or not, I’d never seen a
rice trunk. I knew about the rice
connection of Gullah people with
West African heritage, but people
in my lowcountry St. Helena
Island community grew rice in
small fields near their yards to feed
their families. It was not a major
production, as in nearby Colleton
or Charleston communities or way
up the road in Georgetown County.

to the lands now

Gardens...”
- Bob Jewell, President & CEO
My first recollection of seeing a
rice trunk was during my voyage
on Brookgreen’s “Creek Excursion”
boat ride. The program, begun in
1995, informs visitors about the
contributions of technological skills
and labor by enslaved West Africans
to the rice industry of Georgetown
County’s 45,000 acres of rice fields
during the 1800s. One of these
skills was the use of rice trunks, a
long cylindrical wooden box that
would be placed in the dikes of
dirt around rice fields. A flap gate
would be installed at each end of the
trunk—on the side of the fresh water
river or creek and the side of the rice
field—for flooding and draining the
fields. In the freshwater tidal creeks
of their homelands, West Africans
inserted hollowed tree trunks in
the dikes. Hence, the origin of the
name “rice trunk.”
The recording of Ben the
Trunkminder, along Brookgreen’s
Lowcountry Trail reminds listeners
about the important work on rice
plantations of trunk minders, elder
enslaved Africans whose task, or job,
was to manage the trunks.
“From my office window,” I wrote
in my book, Gullah Branches, West
African Roots (Sandlapper Publishing,
2007), “I overlook Brookgreen
Main, Brookgreen Plantation’s major
ricefield, which teemed with enslaved
African workers some 200 years ago.
I see glimpses of them from time to
time. As I walk The Lowcountry
Trail—amidst ancient live oaks draped
with moss and archeological depictions
of the overseer’s cabin, smokehouse ,
kitchen, and dependency—I sense the
presence of their spirits. I hear their
voices, too: `Bout time oona come,’
they whisper. `Tell de wol bout we.
Tell dem bout all we done done. All we come shru. You yeddy me?’ (Or rather, `Do you hear me?’)”
Springfield Creek Excursions
I’m honored to have begun the
Brookgreen Gardens “Gullah
Geechee Program Series.” Since
2007, I’ve presented Wednesday
lecture presentations to about 7,000
visitors. Some of the information
I present concerns the connections
of Gullah Geechee culture with
West African cultures, which I saw
firsthand during my participation in
the historic “Priscilla’s Homecoming”
event in Sierra Leone in 2005.
Financial support by a Brookgreen
Gardens Board of Trustees member
made my participation possible.
In varying interactive formats, my
presentations also inform about
the unknown origins of the words
“Gullah” and “Geechee”: that
they identify a language, a culture,
and a group of people; and about
numerous facets of Gullah Geechee
culture and heritage. I explain
that whereas “Gullah” had once
been used to identify the culture of
the descendants of enslaved West
Africans in South Carolina and
North Carolina while “Geechee”
~9~
had been used as a cultural identifier
in Georgia and Florida, the term
“Gullah Geechee” is being embraced
collectively as self-identification.
We wish to claim how we identify
ourselves, not by the names that have
been ascribed to us by historians,
anthropologists, and linguists. I’m
grateful for Brookgreen’s support
of my work as a South Carolina
commissioner with the Gullah
Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor
Commission. The Gullah Geechee
Cultural Heritage Corridor was
established in 2006 by federal
legislation, which was sponsored
by Congressman James E. Clyburn
(SC—District 06). It is the only
one of 49 National Heritage Areas
that promotes the living culture of
an African American population.
Its boundaries include the lands
and waterways along the coastal
communities from Wilmington,
North Carolina south throughout
South Carolina and Georgia to St.
Augustine, Florida. My service is as

Since June of 2012, I’ve served as
the Gullah Geechee Commission’s
second chairman and coordinated
its participation in the 2013
Presidential Inaugural Parade.
What an experience that was! The
pride of parade viewers as our float

was palpable. For years,
the words “Gullah” and
“Geechee” had been
regarded as negative
connotations of an inferior
people and culture. Yet
viewers were waving and
cheering with jubilation
and pride. And First
Lady Michelle Obama,
whose ancestral roots
are in Georgetown, SC,
and President Barack
Obama rose to their
feet and beamed at us
affectionately as we
passed the Presidential
Reviewing Stand. That
was a day unlike any
other day! It fostered international
positive acknowledgement to Gullah
Geechee culture. As fellow float
participant Commissioner Willie
Heyward (SC) described the event:
“From the boat to the float. From
despair to hope!” Event photos are
available on the Corridor’s website,
www.gullahgeecheecorridor.org.
Brookgreen’s other initiatives for
promoting Gullah Geechee heritage
include “Gullah Gullah Days,”
an annual field trip program for
~ 10 ~
third graders of Georgetown and
Horry Counties. Begun in 2002,
the program completed its 11th
observance this past February and has
provided instruction to more than
24,500 children. The event’s postfield trip publication, Wha E Mean
fa Be Gullah (As Seen through the
Eyes of Georgetown and Horry County
Third Graders), is available for sale at
Keepsakes Gift Shop.
Brookgreen’s Lowcountry Audio
Trail and The Oaks Plantation
History Trail garnered Brookgreen
Gardens the 2011 SC Heritage
Tourism Award. And visitors
continually marvel at the Wall
Lowcountry Center’s ongoing
“Lowcountry Change and
Continuity” Exhibit, which features
a floor map of an aerial view
showcasing Georgetown County’s
massive former rice fields. They
also are amazed at the Cypress Log
Exhibit, on which one views the
axe and hatchet marks made by
enslaved Africans to fell it some
200 years ago for the clearing of a
rice field. The Creative Education
Department also has provided
related educational and cultural
exhibits and displays. Beginning
in 2006, these have included:
“Finding Priscilla’s Children”,
“Cross-Continental Cultural
Connections”, “Bunce Island: A
British Slave Castle in Sierra Leone”,
“The Fabric of a People: AfricanAmerican Art, Experiences &
Contributions”,“Etched In The Eyes:
The Spirit of a People Called Gullah
Geechee”, and “Sweetgrass: A Living
Legacy of Family and Community.”
“We are very pleased for the
altruism of former Board of Trustee
Chairman John Rainey and his
wife Anne toward our Gullah
initiative,” said Jewell. In their
names, Brookgreen gifted in 2007
a copy of De Good Nyews Wa John
Write, or Gullah Bible, to each
South Carolina public library, the
Library of Congress, and each
service academy and presidential
library. Through their sponsorship
in 2011, Brookgreen also provided
funding for the production of
Healin fa de Soul, the companion
Gullah Bible recording project. In
2012, Brookgreen gifted CD copies
of this largest collection of Gullah
recordings ever made available to
the public to the libraries previously
mentioned. “We’re also pleased,”
Jewell said, “to acknowledge that
through Brookgreen’s nomination of
Ron Daise because of his noteworthy
efforts toward cultural preservation
at Brookgreen and beyond, he
received the SC African American
Heritage Commission’s 2007 Lifetime
Achievement Award. And Ron’s
`Gullah Christmas Story’ presentation
during our Nights of a Thousand
Candles celebration continues to
delight our holiday guests.”
Brookgreen will engage in an
oral history recording project
at Brookgreen Gardens this
summer. It is being conducted
in cooperation with a partnership
of the Gullah Geechee Cultural
Heritage Corridor Commission and
the B.N. Duke Scholars Program
of Duke University in Durham,
NC. Interns will interview former
residents, descendants, or workers of
Brookgreen, Laurel Hill, Springfield
and The Oaks Plantations, the
communities on which Brookgreen
Gardens is established. Participants
will be asked to share experiences
and memories and/or recollections
of Brookgreen’s founders, Archer and
Anna Hyatt Huntington.
The project will involve
documentation and preservation,
much like the Work Progress
Administration’s Federal Writers’
Project of the 1930s. Information
gathered will be meaningful to the
understanding of Gullah Geechee
culture in Georgetown County.
With the May approval of
the Gullah Geechee Corridor’s
management plan by the Office of
the U.S. Secretary of the Interior,
the Gullah Geechee Commission
has begun receiving partnership
applications for the implementation
of projects and programs. The
implementation tiers are Education,
Documentation and Preservation,
and Economic Development.
Through partnerships for specific

programs or as Partner Sites that
convey interpretive themes, the
Gullah Geechee Commission will
engage in “Tellin We Story.” That’s
the interpretation framework
outlined in the management plan.
Gullah Geechee people wish to
accurately inform others about our
history and our culture.
Toward that end, visitors have
learned and experienced much
about Gullah Geechee history at
Brookgreen Gardens.

Of Brookgreen Gardens’ many
accomplishments, among the
most important is its preservation
of diverse ecosystems stretching
over thousands of acres from
the Atlantic Ocean across the
Waccamaw Neck to the Waccamaw
River and Sandy Island, a large tract
of land between the Waccamaw and
Pee Dee Rivers. These ecosystems
are comprised of beaches, salt
marshes, maritime forests, pine
woods, upland forests, river bluffs,

numerous interesting
and rare species onto the property

Land Management and Conservation at Brookgreen Gardens
T
he history of Brookgreen
Gardens and its land
has been enriched by
its residents, staff, and
benefactors and their myriad
connections in the worlds of
science and arts and letters.
Brookgreen Gardens has a
long history of protecting and
preserving the natural resources
of its property. In January 1930,
Archer Huntington and his
wife, Anna Hyatt Huntiongton,
purchased acreage on the northeast
coast of South Carolina, between
the communities of Murrells Inlet
and Pawleys Island, on a peninsula
known as the Waccamaw Neck.
At the time, the best way to travel
there was by boat. Captivated by
the Lowcountry landscape, Anna
wrote to her sister in January 1930:
“I must tell you about our one
day at Brookgreen while it is fresh
in my mind, else all that we have
seen since will dim it…The white
sand paths that run among the
trees shining like patches of snow
among the patches of yellow and
green moss add to the lure. Even
the swamp land is lovely with the
oaks and their long swaying mosses,
the lovely cypress with its uncanny
trunk, bulbous-like mushroom
growths and lots of holly….”
On July 13, 1931, Brookgreen
Gardens was incorporated under
the laws of South Carolina as
an eleemosynary corporation
entitled “Brookgreen Gardens, A
Society for Southeastern Flora and
Fauna” by its founders, Archer
and Anna Huntington. From its
inception, Brookgreen had three
~ 12 ~
primary purposes: (1) to collect,
preserve, and exhibit American
figurative sculpture; (2) to collect,
preserve, and exhibit the plants of
the Southeast; and (3) to collect,
preserve, and exhibit the animals of
the Southeast.
At its founding, Archer
Huntington recognized the
significance of the physical land
and wrote about his plans for its
preservation in the first publication
of the new institution. In part,
he stated: “Brookgreen Gardens is
a quiet joining of hands between
science and art. The original
plan involved a tract of land from
the Waccamaw River to the sea
in Georgetown County, South
Carolina, for the preservation of the
flora and fauna of the Southeast…
Its object is the presentation of the
union this world might yet become
a desert.”
By 1932, Brookgreen Gardens
was open to visitors as a botanical
garden of Southeastern plants, a
sanctuary for animals native to
the region, and an outdoor
museum of American
sculpture. By 1934, it had
grown to include several garden
areas featuring landscaped
settings for sculpture and a zoo
of native animals. Eventually,
the property expanded to include
over 9,000 acres, with about 350
acres open to the public and the
remainder left as protected natural
wildlife habitat and undisturbed
historic sites.
The Huntingtons prophesied the
land development that followed
World War II, and the public’s
freshwater swamps, sand hills, and
all of the various plant and animal
communities found there.
The staff hired in the 1930s to
lead the preservation activities
of Brookgreen Gardens
included men knowledgeable
in the field of natural
history. Frank Tarbox, the
first horticulturist, was a
native plant expert who
~ 13 ~
by Robin Salmon, Vice President of Art &
Historical Collections & Curator of Sculpture
was responsible for developing
a program at Brookgreen in the
1930s to protect and increase the
native turkey population which is
recognized by researchers as the
forerunner of procedures later
adopted by the National Wild
Turkey Federation.
Gurdon L. Tarbox, Jr. became
property manager in 1954 to assist
his uncle, Frank Tarbox, with
day-to-day management of the
Gardens. Along with his other
duties, Gurdon Tarbox was
a forester who managed
Brookgreen’s

of acres of

In addition to the forest
management practices continued
under Gurdon Tarbox’s presidency,
portions of Brookgreen’s salt marsh
in Huntington Beach State Park
were registered with the Heritage
Trust, a program created by
the SC Department of Natural
Resources in 1976 to help prevent
habitat loss by protecting critical
natural habitats and significant
cultural sites which provide
resources for scientific research,
serve as reservoirs of natural and
historical elements, and habitats
for rare and vanishing species.
Portions of the developed and
undeveloped property were also
listed on the National Register of
Historic Places in 1978 and the
entire property was designated a
National Historic Landmark in
1992. Beginning in 2000, the
forested areas were managed by
The Nature Conservancy on behalf
of Brookgreen Gardens.
Today, the forest
management plan is
conducted by professional
staff. A red-cockaded woodpecker
habitat, initiated on the property
in the 1990s, is overseen by Mike
Ammons, Brookgreen’s Director
of Landscaping and Natural Areas.
He manages the trees inhabited
by red-cockaded woodpeckers
in partnership with the SC
Department of Natural Resources
(SCDNR) by inventorying
known trees, marking new ones,
and maintaining the habitat.
Brookgreen Gardens also receives
woodpeckers transferred from other
properties through its participation
in the Safe Harbor Program,
administered through SCDNR.
Mike Ammons implements the
current forest management plan
with the help of Tim Dargan,
a registered forester. The plan
consists of prescribed burns
conducted on 200 acres per year,
herbicide application to selected
locations that are too close to
residential areas to allow burning,
and occasional thinning of loblolly
pine to facilitate restoration and
maintenance of longleaf pine.
Ammons also surveys 2,500 acres
on the east side of US Highway
17 that are leased to SCPRT for
Huntington Beach State Park
and 1,500 acres on Sandy Island,
both owned by Brookgreen
Gardens. Brookgreen Gardens
has a cooperative relationship with
the Waccamaw National Wildlife
Refuge which oversees much of the
other land on Sandy Island.
Working with Mike Ammons is a
staff of four dedicated professionals
who maintain vast developed
and undeveloped portions of
the Brookgreen property. Led
by Landscape Supervisor Mack
Parker (a Brookgreen employee
for 43 years), Melvin Jefferson,
Mike Ammons and Mack Parker
casting off from the boat dock
Tony Grant, and Isaiah Nettles
extend their skills to controlled
burns, tree and shrub cutting and
pruning, mowing, bush-hogging,
road grading, and other large-scale
tasks that maintain and preserve
both the cultivated and the natural
landscapes of Brookgreen Gardens.
With public programs that extend
into outlying areas, their work is
important to keep these remote
locations available to interested
visitors.
Pertaining to wildlife on
the property, Mike Ammons
coordinates a program begun in
1991 with SCDNR to place and
maintain wood duck boxes on the
property. The boxes are surveyed
and maintained twice a year with
the help of Smith Ragsdale of the
Historic Ricefields Association
and three volunteers. According
to the SCDNR, the wood duck
is the most important species to
waterfowl enthusiasts in South
Carolina and is the only duck for
which production habitat can be

managed effectively throughout
all geographic regions of the
state. This project supplements
natural production in tree cavities
of forested wetlands by providing
artificial nesting sites. The
Brookgreen program has a good
30% success rate in attracting
breeding wood ducks.
The Historic Ricefields
Association also advises Ammons
in the management of “Brookgreen
Main”, an original rice field that
was re-impounded in 1998 to
attract migratory waterfowl and
other wildlife to be viewed by
birdwatchers and school groups
from an overlook constructed
along the field. Mike Ammons
also monitors and traps feral hogs,
alligators, and other wildlife on the
property and he patrols the woods
and waterways to protect against
trespassing and poaching.
Other programs enacted in
recent years to conserve energy, to
recycle paper, glass, and plastic,
and to adapt and reuse buildings
and facilities on the property have
enabled Brookgreen Gardens to
make the most of the “green” in
its name. President Bob Jewell
emphasizes the effort: “Everyone
at Brookgreen sees themselves
as stewards of this special place. Consequently, our commitment
to our conservation strategies has
not wavered; it remains a core
value of our organization.” With
its long history of preservation well
established, Brookgreen Gardens is
positioned to maintain its important
living heritage and to protect its land
and resources for future generations.
Bob Jewell adds: “That is our pledge;
it is what we have done and will
continue to do.”
New Look for the
Welcome Center Plaza
Late winter and early spring, we were busy with the
latest improvement to the gardens, the new Welcome
Center Plaza. The new Plaza is situated between the
Tarbox Welcome Center and Keepsakes, the Brookgreen
Shop. It has transformed what was once a simple grass
lawn to a multi-function area with an oval lawn, a
grand terraced walkway, and raised planters that contain
ornamental plantings such as Japanese Maple trees,
evergreen shrubs, and seasonal annual plantings. The
planter boxes have seat walls and surround a reflecting
pool that showcases Fillies Playing by Anna Hyatt
Huntington, one of Brookgreen’s most important and
recent sculpture acquisitions. “The new Welcome Center
Plaza came about through a combination of events,” said
Bob Jewell, President and CEO. “The previous space
was not a true representation of Brookgreen Gardens
with no definition or sense of anticipation of the beauty
that was just beyond the walk.” Jewell continued, “We
wanted to enhance the horticulture presence and to
incorporate sculpture when visitors first arrived at the
Welcome Center. When we received the gift of Fillies
Playing all the stars seemed to align and a plan for the
Welcome Center Plaza was born.”
The new look sets the stage for what guests will
continue to see throughout the gardens - the beauty,
the sense of style, and the connection between art and
nature. Fillies Playing (bronze) is prominently displayed
in the center of the Welcome Center Plaza and echoes
two other equestrian pieces by Mrs. Huntington, the
Fighting Stallions (aluminum) at the entrance and Youth
Taming the Wild (limestone) along the drive to the
Welcome Center.
We would like to express our appreciation to the
Friends of Brookgreen Gardens who generously
supported the project with the proceeds from their
2011-2012 fund raising efforts. We would like to thank
Greg Duckworth with Environmental Concepts for his
conceptual ideas of how to incorporate the new Plaza
so that it blends naturally with the existing structures
and Starwood Landscaping for help in implementing
the design. Finally, we would like to acknowledge
our horticulture, sculpture, and facilities staffs who
completed the project and made sure this highly visible
area appropriately represents all that makes Brookgreen
Gardens ever changing and simply amazing.
BROOKGREEN
GARDENS
2012
ANNUAL
REPORT
I
2012 Annual Report
From the Chairman of the Board of Trustees
and the President & CEO
t is with a deep sense of accomplishment that we report, even in economically challenging times, Brookgreen
Gardens remains financially sound and through prudent management of our resources we have continued to
make significant advances in every aspect of our mission.
In the Horticulture Department, the new Poetry Garden was established with beautiful plantings and poetry
plaques. Other major renovations occurred through out the gardens, including the implementation of a new turf
management program, acquisitions of trees and shrubs, and improvements to the irrigation systems. The plant records
database was upgraded with the purchase of new software, and we expanded our horticulture educational outreach
with a new monthly program that is open to the public.
In the Lowcountry Zoo, we expanded the zoo kitchen to provide more space for food preparation and storage and
added a walk-in cooler, a washer and dryer, a dishwasher, and more cabinet space. The expansion also added more
space for the animals that are used in educational programs and with that expansion we have almost completed
the first of the three phases of our Zoo Master Plan. We established an Association of Aquariums and Zoos’ (AZA)
‘Frogwatch USA’ chapter for a national citizen science project and trained 90 volunteers to recognize native frog calls
and document the calls.
In 2012, we added 42 artworks to our incomparable sculpture collection, including sculptures by Grainger McKoy
(gift of the Jane P. Slick Revocable Trust), Elliot Offner (gift of the Estate of Rosemary O’Connell Offner), Doug
Hyde (gift of Peter M. and Carroll B. Shannon), Hap Hagood (gift of the sculptor), and Christopher Smith (gift
of Stephen Robin). We installed four successful exhibits in the Rainey Sculpture Pavilion and commissioned Sergey
Eylanbekov to design the 40th annual Brookgreen Medal, Diana and the Garden. Through the generous support of,
John Rainey, the Anne Edens Rainey Master Sculptor Program hosted two sculptors-in-residence – Amy Kann and
Gwen Marcus and we had 58 students from all across the country who participated in sculpture workshops. Thanks
to a grant from the American Art Renewal Fund of the Henry Luce Foundation, we renovated an existing building to
create the new Sculpture Library and Archives facility.
The Creative Education Department hosted 6,545 students in addition to teachers and chaperones in
curriculum-based field trips and special events such as “Gullah Gullah Days,” a third-grade social studies program
sponsored by The Falk-Griffin Foundation. The Children’s
Discovery Room welcomed 13,102 visitors. “Etched In The
Eyes: The Spirit of a People Called Gullah Geechee” pictorial
photography exhibit by David Herman, had 3,321 visitors. In
fulfillment of funding by John and Anne Rainey, the Creative
Education Department coordinated the mailing of “Healin
fa de Soul” CD sets to public libraries in South Carolina and
presidential and military libraries.
In remembering these and many other accomplishments
during this past year, we recognize the importance of our
members, our donors, the Friends of Brookgreen, and our
volunteers who generously gave 86,867 hours of their time. Our
uniquely rich legacy, which is the foundation for this nationallyrecognized landmark, lives on through your support.

Prepare for a beach blast from the past when Brookgreen partners with
Flat Rock Playhouse for a third year of excellent concerts. More than
50 years ago in Hawthorne, California, three brothers (Brian, Carl, and
Dennis Wilson), a cousin (Mike Love), and a high school classmate (Al
Jardine) started a band that became the most popular surf band in the
nation. From the outset, their now-classic songs epitomized the spirit
of the California lifestyle – surfing, cars, and bikini-clad women.
At Brookgreen, “Surfin' USA” tribute concert will feature Dustin
Brayley, Ryan Guerra, Ryan Appleby, and an amazing band led by
Eric Fotre Leach.
You may purchase tickets online or at the Admission Plaza, the
Wall Lowcountry Center, or by calling (843) 235-6016. All seats
will be under the performance tent. Performances begin at 7:30
p.m. and last approximately two hours. Seating is limited, and
tickets are $25 for members and $30 for guests.
Cool Summer Evenings
June 12 - August 9, 2013
This season, the curtain rises on a series of exciting and varied musical offerings and
activities for children when the gardens are open until 9 p.m. Cruises down the creek are
available each evening with a new pirate-themed cruise on Thursday evenings. Wednesday
evenings offer Shakespeare inspired performances in the gardens. Thursday evenings
are family friendly at the new Enchanted Storybook Forest and Friday evenings have
‘Concerts on the Lawn’.
