We did not have a white Christmas here only a few flakes. My kind of white Christmas. Family and friends are able to travel and visit with ease. Thank you for all the invitations you extended to me. I have had the best time meeting everyone and helping at the different events. You have made this small town girl feel so humble and honored. The District Chairs will receive the new 2011 forms at the January board meeting. Peg Kuhnly has asked that if you have any old blank forms passed down to you from your past presidents, please destroy them. There will be changes on most of the forms. Please read them carefully. The Outstanding Achievement Awards are judged out of state. Lynn and I will talk with other state Presidents at the State Auxiliary Leaders Conference in Washington, DC. We will ask one of them to judge our state’s entries. One of the criteria that the judges are asked to use is, “Was the current year’s form used?” It is not too late to work on those Outstanding Achievement, Administrator and Auxilian of the Year Awards. Remember, Achievement Awards can be for fundraising, community service, and in-hospital service. You may submit an entry in each area. I know your Auxiliaries are working in all these areas. Write them up and submit them. You never know, you may win! Presidents, please go to your Presidents’ meetings. This is one way the individual Auxiliaries can communicate with the State board, through the District Chairs. Each Chair gives a report about each auxiliary in their district to the board. This can be on issues concerning your auxiliary, gift and thrift shops, fund raising, or community service projects. Remember we have both a Gift Shop and a Thrift Shop consultant. Carol Trammell for the Gift Shop and Peg Meyer for the Thrift Shop. Carol’s address is in our handbook and Peg’s was listed in the November/December issue of the AHAA Newsletter. Let us keep all the tornado victims of Northwest Arkansas and Missouri in our thoughts and prayers. They will need comfort, compassion and strength, as well as the necessities of life to help them through this time in their lives. Take Care, AHAA Newsletter, January/February 2011 Gift Shop Support By Carol Trammell As the AHAA Gift Shop Consultant, I’d like to remind all of you that I am here to help in any way I can. Please contact me with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your Auxiliary-run gift shop. Maybe together we can come up with an idea or solution. Thank you and may you have a great New Year. Mark Your Calendars Spring 2011 District Meetings Special thanks to the host auxiliaries of the spring 2011 AHAA District Meetings. Walker Wheels Need Oil AHAA Newsletter, January/February 2011 AHAA and MedicAlert© by Lynn Smith, President-Elect It was my great pleasure to roll out the red carpet for MedicAlert© to all auxiliaries around the state during our Fall District Meetings. Prior to October it was a pilot program limited to one hospital auxiliary in each of our seven districts. I am anxious to get numbers on how many auxiliaries have embraced the program. If you have not done so, I encourage you to contact MedicAlert©. Our contact person is Claudine Sherron. She can be reached at (209) 669-4475 or at [email protected]. Claudine will assign a number to your hospital auxiliary and get MedicAlert© brochures to you. Once you are set up with MedicAlert©, join the program yourself and enroll family members that can benefit from it. It really is hard to promote a program that you are not a part of. Yes, I am enrolled as well as my husband, stepdaughter (who is diabetic) and granddaughter who is four years old. Make a presentation to your auxiliary to promote the program. I was able to do this at our Christmas Luncheon and it was very well received. It is my suggestion that you talk with your hospital administrator. Possibly you can give a presentation to your hospital department heads. I know they will see many benefits of MedicAlert© to patients once they know about MedicAlert©. It is our responsibility to educate them that it is not jewelry but a service. Your next step might be to contact local civic groups and ask to be on their program. Daycares are a good possibility for The MedicAlert © Kid Smart program. I drafted a letter for my granddaughter’s preschool and sent Kid Smart brochures. The preschool director distributed to all the children. Another area to reach are our locally owned drugstores. Ask if you can leave brochures for them to display on their counters. No need to contact Walgreens, they are unable to do so because they have a commitment with another company. If your community has an Alzheimer’s Support group, reach out to inform them of MedicAlert©. Did you know that 6 out of 10 Alzheimer patients wander? There are usually diabetic support groups in every city or maybe you have a clinic that treats diabetics. If so, meet with the office manager about having MedicAlert© brochures available to their patients. The more I know about MedicAlert© the more excited I am about the service! I have found that some insurance carriers will pay for the initial enrollment to MedicAlert©, no, not Medicare. I don’t want to overload you on MedicAlert© possibilities but they are endless. I want to know what groups you are reaching and other ideas – please keep me informed. If I can help you in any way with a presentation or whatever, please feel free to contact me at 870 864-0473. 3 AHAA Newsletter, January/February 2011 W. P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute Auxiliary Donates Funds for Seed of Hope Sculpture In loving memory… By Paula Jennings, Editor of “The Spotlight” Magazine and Auxiliary Recording Secretary METROPOLITAN DISTRICT North Metro Medical Center, Jacksonville Faye Leverett St. Anthony’s Medical Center, Morrilton Gale Seliskar NORTH CENTRAL DISTRICT Baxter Regional Medical Center, Mountain Home Ruth Wyrtwal NORTHWEST DISTRICT St. John’s Hospital, Berryville Charles Lindt, Gladys Griffis, Mildred Gibson, Jesse Stamps, and William Dettwiller VALLEY DISTRICT Johnson Regional Medical Center, Clarksville Anna Laughrey and Tempy Wagner Thrift Shops By Peg Meyer Hi, I'm Peg Meyer, your new Thrift Shop Consultant. I’m also the Ways and Means Chair for BRMC in Mountain Home. At BRMC, we are proud to have three thrift shops to help support our Auxiliary. I had a big part in helping to get two of these up and running. I know God will humble me for this, but the one we started just two years ago in Flippin had sales of over $50k in 2010, and we were only open four days a week! All of the merchandise is donated and donations come in steadily every week. Having a thrift shop could potentially be a good money making opportunity for your Auxiliary. If I can be of any help to you, or if you would like to come and see our thrift shops, I'd be glad to try to answer any questions you may have, or give you a tour. I can be reached at (870) 424-3801. 4 Since the opening of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute expansion, cancer patients completing active treatment have celebrated that milestone by participating in the Seed of Hope ceremony. The Seed of Hope sculpture, commissioned by the Cancer Institute from Little Rock artist and University of Arkansas at Little Rock professor Michael Warrick, is located in the institute’s 12story atrium. Upon completing their active cancer treatment, Cancer Institute patients are given two seed-shaped tokens and are invited to toss one into the sculpture and to keep one for themselves as a reminder of their survivorship. If they choose, they may give the second token to someone else facing a challenge. By tossing the token, patients honor their own courage and survivorship while also providing hope to other patients. Family members and Cancer Institute staff often share in these special moments. The volunteers and staff have been privileged to witness the coin-tossing by patients who have finished treatment. It is so meaningful and often emotional for them and for those of us who get to participate by cheering, hugging and shedding some tears. It is truly an awesome experience. A donation by the Cancer Institute Auxiliary funded the purchase of the Seed of Hope sculpture. AHAA Newsletter, January/February 2011 Auxiliary News METROPOLITAN DISTRICT Carol Trammel, District Chair Baptist Health – North Little Rock: Submitted by Linda Scott, Volunteer Coordinator. The annual Lights of Love Fundraiser was successful in raising funds for the Chaplains Fund. Lights could be purchased for $3.00 a piece with an acknowledgement card mailed to inform people of lights purchased in memory of or in honor of a loved one. The annual Walk of Lights followed by the Tree Lighting Ceremony was especially beautiful this year. Beginning at the entrance to the garden, each person was given a candle to light. If they desired, they could then share the name of the person or persons they were remembering or honoring. A special prayer was offered for the men and women serving our country in the military. The ceremony moved into the main entrance of the hospital where a history of the Tree Lighting Ceremony was shared by Mary Lynn Watkins and the tree was lighted. This year a very special addition to the tree was added in the form of an angel tree topper given in memory of Jim Collie, RN, by the ICU staff. December was a very busy month for the Auxiliary including a Volunteer Christmas Awards Luncheon held at Baring Cross Baptist Church, Employee Christmas party, and a Small Electronics and Fragrance Sale held just in time for last minute Christmas gifts. The sale proved to be very successful. The Auxiliary also provides Christmas Stockings, made by two of our Auxiliary members, for our babies born in the month of December. North Metro Medical Center – Jacksonville: Submitted by Donald Hicks, NMMC Auxiliary President. The North Metro Medical Center Auxiliary has been very busy over the last two months. We had our annual Fall Book Sale and our Holiday Bake Sale and both did real well. We also had a wreath sale this year. We gave each of the departments in the hospital an undecorated wreath and had them decorate them with different themes and with items of their choice. We got 21 decorated wreaths back. We then displayed the wreaths and had a silent auction to sell them. The departments did a wonderful job of decorating the wreaths and the sale got very exciting. We also decorated the common areas in the hospital and were able to place and decorate four Christmas trees this year. The Auxiliary also conducts the Annual Lobby Lighting Ceremony. We had some excellent music and singing while everybody got into the Holiday Spirit. Our hospital CEO, Mr. Mike Schimming, and the Mayor of Jacksonville, Gary Fletcher, spoke to the crowd. After the ceremony, the Auxiliary provided refreshments for everyone. We decorated our golf cart and entered it into the Jacksonville Christmas Parade which helps the Jacksonville Boys and Girls Club. The gift shops have been having some real nice sales for the holidays and to reduce the inventory to make space for new items as our buyers go to Market in January. The Hospital Senior Management honored the Auxiliary members with a recognition brunch. The senior management provided and served the members a wonderful brunch. We had games and prizes. We were also honored to have Santa Clause/CEO, Mike Schimming, make a visit and spend time with everyone so they could give him their wish lists. He also had time for all the members to get their picture taken with him. The event was very much appreciated by the members. The NMMC Auxiliary is glad to finish 2010, but are looking forward to an exciting 2011. St. Anthony’s Medical Center – Morrilton: Submitted by Delores Hartman, Auxiliary President. December was loaded with fundraisers and projects but with everyone's talents and energy we were able to reach our goals. Our Gift Shop has had wonderful sales. We had a very successful Bake Sale, Gold X-Change buy for two days and a Handbag and Jewelry Sale. Our volunteers sold more tickets than ever for the wonderful Christmas Basket Drawing which contained many items and of course it included a whole ham from Petit Jean Meats. We provided cookies for all guests and children that came to visit Santa at the "Love Lights A Tree" lighting ceremony to benefit our Hospital Foundation. Our hospital provided a wonderful Christmas Luncheon for all auxiliary volunteers. Our local VFW Post displayed over 400 U S Flags on Dec 7th, Pearl Harbor Day, along the walking trail on the hospital lawn and our auxiliary members 5 AHAA Newsletter, January/February 2011 made cookie bags to hand out to every one of the approximately 350 elementary students that came to walk through the flags that day. The VFW does this on several other days throughout the year and each flag has a plaque attached to designate it in memory or in honor of a veteran. It is a beautiful sight with all the flags blowing in the breeze. At our January meeting we will present to Christy Hockaday, our CEO/Administrator, a check for $25,000 to fulfill our pledge for equipment in the Surgical Department. Our volunteers are an awesome group and work very hard to reach our goals. Our hearts were saddened December 28th when we lost Gail Seliskar, one of our dear members after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. May she rest in peace. Wishing one and all a Happy Blessed New Year! St. Vincent’s Health System – Little Rock: Submitted by Breda Turner. Edith Bowman received the Besser award for exceptional service and extensive personal commitment. She also received her pin for 11,000 hours of service to St. Vincent. Edith is an employee of St. Vincent but still manages to give nearly 70 hours a month as a volunteer. She puts together the bags for the new moms in Labor and Delivery and has earned her own “office” to hold all the information for the bags. She is described to be like a mother hen when it comes to her employees and the patients. She will work into the night to be sure that each patient has a completed and orderly packet. Marty Schaufele was nominated by the MICU Unit for the Joan B. Wilson award which recognizes genuine hospitality, for providing care and comfort to all patients. We have never had so many nominations for one person, doctors and nurses and support staff all completed forms in her name. Marty has volunteered at St. Vincent for 19 years. She stays late when the unit is busy. She is cheerful, caring and willing to help. Her staff love her. She works two days a week in the MICU unit. She was not at the luncheon, but we managed to work with her husband, Mike, to surprise her the following evening when she was hosting a Christmas party for the unit!! Tim Orellano was awarded the Wendy Saer Award by Wendy Saer. He was recognized for his 28 years of service with the tennis tournament, for his sense of fun and positive outlook. He is loved dearly for his energy and fancy shoes and for constantly motivating everyone around him. Last but not least, we gave Jon Timmis, VP and Chief Strategy Officer, a mock check for $1,325, 722, the value of the volunteer hours worked for 2010. A big increase from last year. Saline Memorial Hospital – Benton: Submitted by Patricia Heinz. We have been very busy during the last two months as I am sure everyone else has. We had a new project this year. We distributed Christmas Wreaths to all the departments and asked the personnel to decorate them (no set theme), and were truly amazed at how creative our people are. We then had a silent auction on the wreaths and made quite a large profit. Our Gift Shop had the 12 days of Christmas again this year. Each day Carol picked an item out of the bag (different colors, Christmas items, plush, etc.) and put them at a percentage off, also drawn from the bag. Merchandise moved very well and once the customer was in the shop they seemed to buy other things not on sale. The Gift Shop is the big money maker for our Auxiliary, and it has done extremely well this year. We also had our usual fund raisers and did very well. Pulaski Tech School contacted us and wanted to know if we would take their Senior High School students that are in a medical program and have them volunteer. They will start at the beginning of the year and we managed to get them on to floors where they will be able to help the nurses performing duties. They are looking forward to this and hopefully it will work out well for all. We had a volunteer tree in the front lobby. We took a picture of each volunteer and decorated a tree with them. It was fun to see the volunteers looking for their picture and visitors seeing if they knew anyone. We also raffled off some Victorian Carolers and Lamp, and drew names for a dinner for two at a local restaurant as a customer appreciation. As usual, the Auxiliary enjoyed a lovely Christmas lunch just before the holiday. Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute – Little Rock: (see Page 4 for feature article) 6 AHAA Newsletter, January/February 2011 NORTH CENTRAL DISTRICT Sharon Huffmire, District Chair Baxter Regional Medical Center – Mountain Home: Submitted by Jill Chandler, Auxiliary President. Our fundraiser for December was a jewelry sale with Jewelry Express. January’s fundraiser will include sales of women’s accessories. The Auxiliary has given $900,000.00 toward their promised $1,000,000.00 endowment to the Baxter Regional Hospital Foundation. We followed up on our BRMC4Me program with a final Three BRMC4Me Graduates also take home the big prizes: Venda Mosch (2nd place winner), Rita Mauser graduation party/meeting for Auxilians who attended one (grand prize winner) and Alice Fraser (3rd place winner). or more of the 14 BRMC informational programs offered periodically since last June. Special speakers, dessert, and door prizes were awarded (photo right). A good time was had by all. The Pink-A-Dilly Auxiliary Gift shop promoted the "12 days of Christmas" sale featuring something different on sale each of the 12 days. Every day, DVS, Becky Rose sent an email to Auxilians and hospital staff informing them what was on sale that day (nothing was announced ahead of time). This kept folks coming back to check out the merchandise. On December 23rd, the gift shop also held its Midnight Madness Sale for the night shift and surprisingly, for the first time ever, put everything in the store at 50% off from 8pm until midnight. This was a special treat for our night shift staff that often does not get a chance to be at the hospital when the gift shop Peg Meyer (left) and Carolyn Hannon (right) ran our Christmas Gift Wrap fundraiser which made $1,185 for BRMC Auxiliary. is open. We also had the Christmas Gift Wrapping service (photo left) in our lobby – our best year ever with net sales of $1,185.00! Another holiday fundraiser was to offer $5.00 Christmas tree lights for our Community Christmas Tree. The lights could be purchased in honor or memory of a friend or loved one. That effort netted an additional $435.00. Baptist Health Medical Center – Heber Springs: Submitted by Holly Langster. Our Auxiliary has been VERY active this year with an increase in members (a 14% increase). Edith Hunter completed her second year of service as our President, and worked closely all year with Vice President, Vickie Bryant, to prepare her for her upcoming Presidential service. Co-Vice President, Bev Verser; Secretary, Pat Uecker; and Treasurer, Sandy Antonik, completed our leadership table. This team brought forth many exciting ventures in 2010. The biggest source of pride comes from our gift shop which has received a “face lift” and an increase in profits that has made a huge impact on our bottom line. Event chairs Nancy Martin and Shirley Hutchison did a fabulous job keeping all events covered for the year, as well as organizing the annual Style Show (photos left and right). Diane Tiner This year’s theme was A Fashionable Affair and reported Barbara Pierce 7 AHAA Newsletter, January/February 2011 record ticket sales and door prize donations. Many of the new members took on some of our traditional holiday events such as the Wreath Decorating Contest and Silent Auction and the annual Picture Day With Santa. The Auxiliary also continued with their many hospital obligations (greeting, escorting, inpatient duties, assistance with ER families, blood drive, outpatient chemotherapy, and other hosting services) as organized by schedulers David and Barbara Martin. The year ended with a donation to the hospital in the amount of $17,000 for specified items in various departments. In 2011, Baptist Health Medical Center – Heber Springs Auxiliary welcomes new leadership: President, Vickie Bryant; Vice-President, Terri Lee; Secretary, Shirley Buser; and returning Treasurer, Sandy Antonik. With this new leadership, we look forward to more exciting ventures. White County Medical Center – Searcy: Submitted by Jamie Laughlin, Director of Volunteer Services. Our Christmas party was enjoyed by all those attending. The entertainment was spectacular. The Board ended the program by singing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” to us all. The Gift Shops had their best December sales ever – over $60,000!! That will help us to meet our $150,000 pledge to the Cancer Center that is now taking shape in its construction. The hospital is offering free cholesterol screenings to all WCMC Auxiliary members on January 12th. The Board is hosting a meeting to learn Gloria Treat “Extra Mile” Winner. more about the functions of the Board of Directors. It is intended to educate Auxilians who may be interested in being nominated as a Board member. We would like to congratulate Sally Grinnell and Gloria Treat as our “Extra Mile Award” winners for November and December. They were nominated by their peers and selected by the Board as the deserving winners for going above and beyond their expected duties as a Sally Grinnell “Extra Mile” Winner. volunteer at My Hospital. Happy New Year! White River Medical Center – Batesville: Submitted by Tena Bledsoe, Director of Volunteer Services/Programs. White River Medical Center Auxiliary hosted a book sale with sales of just over $17,000 and also a Masquerade event with sales of $15,500. Our Auxiliary partnered with the County Extension Agency and donated 60 sets of pediatric pillow cases to the hospital along with 50 gift bags for children. We held a reception for Gary Edwards, AHAA Volunteer of the Year, and invited the community, hospital staff, volunteers and all his friends and family. We are so very proud of Gary! The gift shop’s sales are proving to be a very strong year/holiday season once again! We have recruited several new volunteers who are helping out in tremendous ways. We are continuing to raise funds for the upcoming building project set to begin in spring of 2011. The Auxiliary has committed to a second half million dollar donation to this next project. Exciting times at WRMC! NORTHEAST DISTRICT May “Pud” Thomas, District Chair SMC Regional Medical Center – Osceola: Submitted by Pud Thomas, Auxiliary President and Northeast District Chair. The Osceola Hospital Auxiliary, in addition to their everyday responsibilities, had numerous activities going on during the Holiday Season. Christmas wreaths were given to each department in the hospital for a decorating/silent auction activity to support our scholarship fund. A new activity was initiated from an idea from the Wynne Auxiliary. We selected a date to do free gift wrapping for 8 AHAA Newsletter, January/February 2011 the employees working at the hospital. It was such a success that we wrapped a second day! The employees were really happy and the Auxilians had a great time working together. On December 17th, we served an assortment of cookies, punch and coffee in the hospital lobby for visitors as well as employees. The Auxiliary Ladies were honored by the hospital with a special Christmas luncheon. Our active membership has dropped recently and the main emphasis in this New Year will be to locate and bring into our auxiliary new members. Please pass on any ideas that we might use for recruiting! Best Wishes to all in this coming New Year. St. Bernards Medical Center – Jonesboro: Submitted by Dean Rossa. St Bernard’s Auxiliary Board voted in November to relax the uniform code to include wearing either black shoes and slacks or white shoes and slacks with the Auxiliary’s standard white top and pink jacket. Our fall Light Up a Life campaign to honor loved ones by donations to the Auxiliary has raised over $6000. In the past, LUAL activities have included tree lightings, community singers, Santa, and receptions. The event this year was a no-frills mailing of fund-raising letters. The Christmas jewelry sale was successful. At our November awards meeting, Auxiliary models – wearing Gift Shop wares – entertained us with a fashion show. Ten Auxiliary members were recognized for having volunteered in excess of 5000 hours each. State president, Mary Frauenhoff, helped at the sign-in table. We've added six new members in the last quarter. Piggot Community Hospital – Piggot: Submitted by Anita Allman, Auxiliary President. We made $1,000 on our jewelry sale. We have had 50 young people and 14 mentors busily helping and volunteering at the hospital, but are currently taking a much needed break for all of us until January 2nd, then we will be back in full speed at our hospital. I encourage other hospitals to look into doing this as it is rewarding for the patients, staff, children and our local AHAA members. We let 7th through the 12th graders help and they love it. We also have a seasonal art wall that we just changed to the Christmas and New Year's season. Our local Jr. and Sr. High Art Classes supply the 8½ by 11 art and we frame and hang it. Really looks nice with all red or green metallic frames for this season. NORTHWEST DISTRICT Margaret Underwood, District Chair North Arkansas Regional Medical Center – Harrison: Submitted by Joy Woelbing, Gold Club/Volunteer Coordinator. We have been busy with two fundraisers for the Christmas season. Nightingale's Gift Shop held a very profitable Basket Sale and sold almost 200 Gift Baskets in one day (photo left). They are also gift wrapping in the Tower waiting room. NARMC Auxiliary members helped with the community-wide flu shot clinic in November, as well as a Prostate Cancer Screening in December. The Auxiliary donated $1,000 to the Hospice of the Hills, "Twenty is Plenty" fundraiser. November was also a busy month for new babies and the Auxiliary provided baby booties for each of the new 81 babies born. Volunteers and staff are attending Disney-U Customer Service Training and Press Ganey Customer Service ratings are in the top 90 percentile of the country. The new year brings many new opportunities for volunteering and we NARMC gift shop sells almost 200 gifts baskets in one day! are looking forward to the year ahead. 9 AHAA Newsletter, January/February 2011 Eureka Springs Hospital – Eureka Springs: Submitted by Grace Wilson. The Eureka Springs Hospital Guild has only 33 members, and some are out of town members, but we do accomplish a lot. Sales profit from the Purple House Thrift Store is the main source of our income besides dues, memorials and misc. contributions. We recently took part in a Trash or Treasure Sale at Holiday Island. Our annual Christmas luncheon and installation of officers was a success with a cookie exchange as our dessert. In November we spent $8,000.00 which included a contribution to the local Salvation Army and to the Hospital, a garbage disposal for the kitchen, training costs for two radiology techs, expenses for ECHO vouchers for diagnostic testing, several over the bed tray tables, and decorated outdoor flower boxes. We volunteer from 200-425 hours each month. Mercy Medical Center – Rogers: Submitted by Christy Blackshear, President Elect. The Max Re-shop Boutique is a joint venture of the Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary and Mercy Health Foundation of Northwest Arkansas. The grand opening was held on Friday, November 26, 2010. Proceeds directly benefit Northwest Arkansas by supporting women's and children's services provided by Mercy Health System. Fundraisers sponsored by the Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary were uniform, jewelry and pie sales. In addition, the Mercy Auxiliary Christmas Celebration included a luncheon as well as service award presentations. Upcoming events for January will be implementation of the Medic Alert program and the awarding of the Mercy Scholarships funded by the Foundation, the Auxiliary, and the Mabel Shaddox Nursing Scholarship Fund for spring 2011. Northwest Medical Center – Springdale: Submitted by Lesa Tucker. Northwest Medical Center Springdale Auxiliary hosted the 27th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony Monday, November 22nd on the front lawn of the hospital. Siloam Springs Auxiliary Volunteers Spread Holiday Cheer: The Auxiliary Volunteer Gift shop hosted a drawing for a stocking full of gifts. Every purchase made in the gift shop during December qualified for an entry in the drawing. One of the gift shop’s repeat customers, Patti Baker, RN from the OB unit, was the lucky winner drawn. In addition, the gift shop saw a spike in sales during this contest. Shown in front of the Christmas tree provided and decorated by the Auxiliary, Budget Committee Chair and Auxiliary member, Ann Cloud presents the stocking to a very excited Siloam Springs Memorial Hospital Nurse (photo left). The volunteers also provided a holiday tray snowman for patients on Christmas Day. This helps bring a smile to patients who have to spend the holiday away from their family and homes. SOUTHEAST DISTRICT Nedra White, District Chair Chicot Memorial Medical Center – Lake Village: Submitted by Dean Ann Smith, Publicity Chair. Our November jewelry sale was a big success again. We collected $920 from the wreath auction on Nov. 24th and Southeast Rehab won again for selling the highest bid wreath. They were treated to cake and ice cream. We held the annual Christmas Tea for the hospital employees December 2nd. On December 14th, our Auxiliary was treated to the first annual noon luncheon given by our local AHEC (Area Health Education Center). We were waited on like royalty and the food was wonderful! They had beautiful poinsettias on our tables and when we were through eating, they awarded a lucky Auxilian a poinsettia at that particular table. They told us they Nancy Gardner (left) helps Joyce Creel (right) cut the cake Joyce made to honor wanted to do this for us because we retiring employee, Toma Hardin. were always on the giving side and needed to be, for once, on the receiving side. To top it all off, each Auxilian there received a Christmas present, a beautiful recipe book published by UAMS, College of Nursing, titled Culinary Prescriptions. On December 15th, we gave another reception for retiring employee, Toma Hardin, for her 45 years of service (photo left). She will be missed. The jewelry hosted by Cathy Hathcoat in November netted $173.80. We enjoyed a Christmas Luncheon held at the Honeycomb Restaurant in Arkadelphia on December 13th. CEO, Greg Stubblefield, and our DVS, Loretta Kilts, were special guests. During this Christmas season, our gift shop is staying open an hour later. Sales have been great thanks in part to employee payroll deductions. Purses and scarves have been hot items. Several of our Auxilians participate regularly during blood drives as well as two other much needed areas of service – MRIs and eye surgery. We are looking forward to having our Tasteful Treasures cookbook finalized. Medical Center of South Arkansas – El Dorado: Submitted by Lynn Smith, MCSA Auxiliary Newsletter Editor. The holidays have come and gone and we look forward to the New Year. The year 2010 was all and more than we could have expected. Hosting the SW Spring District meeting in April was the highlight of our Auxiliary year. We have added members and had great success with sales in both our Uniform Shop and Gift Shop. This year we had two bake sales (one for Father's Day and one at Thanksgiving). Our fundraisers included two jewelry sales and Books Are Fun. MCSA staff continues to be so supportive of our sales and fundraisers. In January our hospital will begin Senior Circle and we hope to recruit new members from that source. We welcome a new hospital liaison, Alex Hale, who will also be in charge of Senior Circle. She is young, beautiful, sweet, and very creative. We embrace this change and look forward to her leadership. We have monthly commitments to several medical related programs in our community. Each year $10,000 is awarded in scholarships to deserving students who wish to obtain a degree in the medical field. We are funding more and more single moms and older students who are trying to better themselves. It is quite rewarding to help them achieve their goals. Acceptance of our scholarship ties them to a commitment with MCSA. While they are true scholarships, if the recipient does not stay with MCSA, the money has to be paid back to our scholarship fund. We feel this helps the student and our hospital fill needed positions. Happy New Year! Ouachita County Medical Center – Camden: Submitted by Daphne Bennett, Auxiliary Newsletter Editor. This was very popular and provided very brisk sales each day. We were very honored to be invited to the home of Guild Member, Linda Wallman, for a Christmas luncheon. Sparks CEO, Melody Trimble, was unable to attend but sent to each Guild member a Windbreaker Jacket, which was really appreciated by everyone. Seems like just yesterday I put up all the Christmas decorations and now I’ve taken them down and packed them away for another year. In other words, with a blink of an eye, the time flew right by. We did have a great time visiting with family and friends and those are the memories and moments that really count. I’m kind of missing all the kids and grandkids in California. Once they get tired of fighting the traffic and the crowds, maybe they’ll all head for the Ozarks for a visit and some grandma lovin’. I so much enjoy reading all of your newsletter submissions. You truly are Auxiliaries in Action with so many activities and fundraisers going on. It is almost overwhelming to realize and actually grasp all the good that comes out of your efforts. I hope you each take the time to read through the articles from each auxiliary. Your AHAA Auxiliaries in Action newsletter is one of the many ways that we share and communicate with each other. Each month I plan to highlight one or more auxiliaries. This month I selected the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute in Little Rock. Be sure to catch their story on page 4. Special articles are also welcome. If you have a great story to tell or something out of the ordinary to share, please write it up and email it to me (appropriate, originals only, please). As long as it’s not a lengthy dissertation, I’ll always find room in the newsletter for you. That’s all for this month. Just think, by the time you read the next newsletter, we’ll be that much closer to Spring. I’m almost ready for that, are you? Newsletter Schedule/Reminder It is highly appreciated if submissions are made electronically via email to ([email protected]) either in the body of the email or as a Microsoft Word attachment. But, if you absolutely must submit via snail-mail, please mail early so that I receive it by the cut-off date. Photos using the .jpg extension may also be submitted – just let me know what event it goes with and identify those in the photo. – Thank you!
