SECRETS OF THE CHAMPION

is it easy being a champion? how can one maintain one’s intellect when one is
hit on the head every day? who can take the crown away from Klitschko? world
champion and holder of many titles, great russian boxer kostya TSZYU has told bulba
NEWS about the secrets of his vistories, about controlled aggression and about his
love for ukraine and ukrainian cuisine.
You are a very strong and successful man. Is it not
hard being always the first, the champion?
First of all, being a champion is a hard work. Therefore, if you are a champion today, tomorrow you do
not have to choose being a champion or not. You need
to earn being the champion. This is hard work and
huge responsibility.
What does one sacrifice to become a champion?
Almost everything. For instance, at the start of
my boxing carrier I sacrificed my childhood. Since
I was 12 I trained twice a day. Correspondingly, I
had to go to bed at 9 P.M. Very early I had a dream
that I tried to achieve. Which meant that there
would be no disco bars, no partying, only the drills.
Therefore I believe that I sacrificed my childhood
in exchange for boxing.
Which of your fights would you name the most important in your career and how hard it was?
For me it seems it was just yesterday, although it was
12 years ago, on November 2, 2001. In that fight I assembled all titles together and became world champion. I believe that people still remember that fight
with Zab Judah. I became an absolute world boxing
champion and this is a rare achievement. I made it
into history due to this fight. I am on the International Hall of Fame. Therefore we can say that this
fight is the most significant fight in my boxing career.
Until then there had been no absolute champion in
this weight category for 40 years.
Is it frightening to enter the ring after a defeat?
After the first defeat it was not scary. But it was hard
to motivate myself. Nevertheless, I was self-confident.
There was no fear of defeat.
How do you like coaching? What are your goals?
My goal is for my boys to never lose. However, this
is not the only goal. Being a champion is a heavy responsibility.
You are constantly criticized, many people expect
you to fall, and you have many enviers. That is
why I not only teach, but bear additional responsibility for the boys, their mood and well-being,
so that they could stay focused and abstract
themselves from all this.
Name us two-three most promising Russian boxers.
In any weight categories!
Promising? We have many promising boxers; therefore it is hard to tell. However, I will tell you two
names that are important to me know. These are the
boys I work with currently, Sasha Povetkin and
Denis Lebedev. They are
world champions, but it
is my job to not only help
them retain their championships, but to also be
loved by people, be role
models for others. So that
they are recognized everywhere and become true
stars.
Currently, all boxing fans
wait eagerly for the fight
between Klitschko and
Povetkin. Was this your
idea to get them into one
ring? Is it worth for Povetkin to take this risk of
facing the hardest fight
against giant Klitschko?
No, the idea was not mine, but it is in the wind.
Vladimir is the world champion, Sasha is a regular champion; however, there should be only one
champion. Therefore, it is our task to make Sasha the champion. What does it mean - taking
risks? This is the true drive of it all – the arrival
of a new generation, which should come and take
away from the older ones that which they held
for too long.

Who is the best middle weight boxer in the world today?
Well, there is no absolute champion today. It is hard
to give just one name. But I think that the best boxer today is Mayweather who is a bright star and the
most highly paid boxer of the world and one of the
best boxers in history.
Boxing is one of the bloodiest sports. Do you believe
that violence will save the world?
By no means ever! Violence will never save the world
and our boxing is not a bloody sport. It is harsh, but
this harshness is the controlled aggression. Everything is under control.
Is there an unwritten boxing ethic apart from the official rules?
Our ethics is this: shake your adversary’s hand before
and after the fight.
Can you interact with your adversary outside the
ring as if he were your friend or comrade?
I have great friends who helped me in my preparations
to fights being my sparring partners. We are friends in
spite of the fact that we fight in the ring. Entering the
ring with my son I will punch him too.
How does he feel about this?
And what can he do? (laughs)
Do you want him to become a professional boxer?
He is only 15 and he is the champion of Australia already. Yes, I would like him to, but this is my wish.
There is of course a question of his wish. The key is
for him to want it!
Do you have boxing dreams?
Thank God, no more!
Have you ever fought outside the ring?
Very seldom. The last time I fought in 1990, but I am
not going to tell you under what circumstances.

And how one can preserve one’s intellect while being
hit on the head all the time?
It is better to avoid being hit on the head. Besides, do
you know that statistically boxing ranks 20 injurywise even in terms of head injuries? Football is the
leader here!
Which of your personality traits you are proud of
and would like your sons to inherit?
My main trait is hard working, fantastic hard working. This is what I would like to convey to my sons.
Who is the head of your family?
I am. Just like this, direct and harsh. (laughs)
Does your wife have a right of vote?
Seldom! (laughs)
Is there someone who you consider a moral authority, who you admire and whose opinions is very important for you?
My dad.
Your professional life took you all over the world,
you lived in different countries. Who do you feel you
are? Is there a place that you can call you home?
I am Russian. And I feel Russian. Regarding a place
I cannot give you an answer. I am a citizen of the
world! But I like places where it is quiet and calm
and where people do not recognize me. This is the
best and most convenient place where I would like
to live.

When have you become acquainted with Ukraine
and Ukrainian cuisine?
I visited Ukraine for the first time in 1985. After
that I visited Alushta many times. I had my training camp there. I visited Lviv, too. In other words,
I have been in many Ukrainian places. This country is very close to me. I love Ukrainian borsch
with pampushki, vareniki with potatoes, pirogi
with cabbage, all sorts of homemade pickles: tomatoes, cucumbers, well, everything!
Many sportsmen follow strict diets not to gain
weight. Do you impose any restrictions on yourself?
At this point I do not have to do this. However, generally speaking the assortment of food here is quite
good for any diet. If I were prescribing a diet for anyone I would recommend this restaurant because here
you can find everything you need.
What do you like most in Korchma Taras Bulba?
You know, I cannot say what I do NOT like. This is
the problem. Whatever I order here, I just love it
all. Without exceptions. I have been a guest here for
many years and I love it all and always!
When was the first time you visited Korchma? Did
someone recommend it?
The first time I visited it by pure chance. And I liked
it. There is a Korchma restaurant not far from my
home, therefore we are frequenting it. It is cozy and
very homelike.
How did you meet the owner of the restaurant Yuri
Beloyvan?
I have met him five or six years ago, maybe more.
In Australia. Marat Safin was playing on the Australian Open and we sat side by side, cheering, and
this is how we met.
Does your wife share your culinary preferences?
First, we do not eat fat or fried food. Therefore
here everything is just for us.
Are you interested in anything else apart from boxing? What do you like to do in your free time, if you
have any? Or what would you like to do?
Sport is my life. Not just a hobby, but my entire
life. Recently I have become a founder of a restaurant and have grown interest in the restaurant
business. This is an Asian cuisine restaurant and
I think it is one of the best here in Russia. Also, I

Sports of the USSR. Was born in the town
of Serov (Sverdlovsk region) on September
19, 1969. The unusual last name of Tszyu
comes from his Korean grandfather who
came to Russia from China. When Kostya
was nine years old, his father brought him
to the boxing class.
After 1991 Konstantin lived and worked in
Australia. After returning to his homeland
Konstantin conducts regular master classes
demonstrating his methods of training and
coaches famous Russian sportsmen. On
June 12, 2011 Kostya Tszyu was included
into the International Hall of Boxing Fame
as a man who contributed largely to the
development of this sport.

OF THE FOLK CALENDAR
“April begins while snow is still there and ends with green leaves,” “April streamS
wake the earth.” There are many folk sayings and beliefs about April. The name
of the month dates back to the Latin word “aprilus,” which means “warmed
by the Sun.” In the ancient Russia it was called TSVETEN (flower month),
snegogon (driving snow away), vodoley (pouring water), and in Ukraine it is
still called kviten (the flower month). In the folk calendar almost every day is
connected with a certain belief. We have selected several days of the April folk
calendar for you, so that you could see that these beliefs are true for yourself,
and try some of the dishes recommended during Lent.

On this day the spring and well
water was especially highly
rewarded, and its properties were
deemed curative. On this day
people (especially those seriously
ill) had to wash up with well or
spring water. Water enchanted
on this day was used to cure
many ailments. Also, this day is
considered a day of glorifying flax.
People would hang their prettiest
flaxen clothes on fences would
adorn birch branches with handembroidered towels. The girls
would reel off with long flaxen
stripes.

The Annunciation is a holiday dedicated
to commemorate the day when Archangel
Gabriel brought good news to Virgin Mary
that she would give birth to the Son of God.
The Russian people loved the Annunciation
very much and considered this holiday one
of the most important holidays in the year.
Fasting would always become less strict
on Annunciation, even if it would coincide
with The Good Friday. They would cook
“kulebyaka” specifically for this day: a special
cake with fish or cabbage. According to folk
belief on Annunciation God Himself blesses
the earth and all that grows upon it. This
brought about the tradition to hallow the seeds
set aside for planting on the eve of, or during
Annunciation.

Cabbage Soup Maria
By April the peasants run out of cabbage; therefore
they could only dream of thick cabbage soup in
which “the spoon can stand upright.” The saying
went as follows “Don’t wish for sour cabbage soup
in April!” It was time to cook April soup – barren,
thin and giving occasion to various jokes: “Cabbage
soup good only to rinse foot wraps.” They used to put
nettle and sorrel into the soup since they didn’t have
any cabbage.

This year, Lent which started in March will last during the entire April and will
end on May 4. For those fasting, the network of Korchma Taras Bulba created
a diversified lenten menu which allows fasting during Lent without damage
to health. Naturally, it is not simple for the lives of active adults without animal
proteins and fat. Therefore, it is crucial that the menu is created properly, diversified
and with consideration of nutrition experts.
Obviously, the purpose of Lent is not dietary, but
rather spiritual. The refusal to eat animal food and
carnal pleasures should lead one to elevated thoughts,
stimulate one to think about one’s life and if it is as pure
and clean as one would wish. The priests themselves
call upon the believers to not jump into Lent feet first
by taking up overwhelming rules.
They advise quite the opposite – to soundly measure
one’s abilities and abide only by those restrictions
that can be held until the last or Holy Week. And, of
course, they remind us that those below 14 years of age,
sick, pregnant and nursing mothers and travelers are
relieved of Lent. Dieticians recommend supplementing
the lenten menu with rich fruits, vegetables and root
crops, so as to always have something nutritious
at hand: for instance, bananas, sweet pears, canned
peaches and resins. Besides, it is almost impossible to
loose weight during Lent because of the need to transfer
almost completely to the hydrocarbon diet. Fruits and
vegetables improve the work of the stomach, excrete
fats, carcinogens and allergenic agents, reduce high
cholesterol blood level sand reduce the risk of malignant
tumors. Regarding fresh fruits and vegetables, there are
so many nowadays in stores, that it makes you dizzy.
These are popular apples, bananas and potatoes, and
exotic mango and papaya. Drinks containing milk
are completely prohibited during Lent; therefore it
is recommended to switch over to very useful and
completely lenten drinks – kissels and compotes.
Kissel is a brilliant invention of Slavic cuisine, it can

Bees were held in high regard by the folk. There
are many folk saying about bees: “Priest would
not serve mass without bees (i.e. without wax);
“Bees are small but they know more than those
who are great in size»; “To keep bees you have
to love bees»; “For a good beekeeper there is no
bad year»; “a bee won’t sting a good man.” It was
advised to eat honey on this day. In ancient Rus
it was eaten not only in its pure form, but was
also used for cooking of different dishes. Honey
was added even to meat, paltry and fish dishes.
Pork and duck baked in honey were very popular.

also well loved.

as oat flakes and whole oats, while kissel’s thickness
can be regulated by adding starch: the more starch,
the thicker the kissel. Frozen berries are excellent for
compote, what is important is to not allow it to boil
longer than five minutes under a lid, thus it will retain
maximum vitamins. It is recommended to cook simple
and nutritious lenten dishes, for instance, mushroom
and potato cream soups (you can make them tastier
by adding vegetable cream or soymilk), stew of the
mixture of frozen vegetables, and stewed cabbage with
carrots. Besides, it is high time to reach into the garner
for grandmother’s pickled cucumbers, sauerkraut and
winter salads. Such a savory additive can diversify
lenten dishes. Such homework combines well with
boiled potatoes, buckwheat and lentil mash. Seasonings
can and should be added to almost all dishes, together
with fresh and dried culinary plants, this will improve
the taste of the most lenten dish right away.
Such additions will not impair the healthy properties of
the dish. We should also mention soybean dishes which
are particularly good for the elderly and for people
involved in sedentary work. Soybean dishes reduce
the risks of cardiovascular diseases, improve the work
of brain and regulate the contents of cholesterol in
blood. (Besides, according to the dieticians the entire
diet prescribed by the Lent can be called the best anticholesterol diet.)
Among other things, the prohibited products are
contained in the most unexpected foodstuffs. For
instance, many chewing gums contain animal gelatin.
The same can be said about chocolate, bakery foods and
fast-food – you can never know what it inside what
appears to be a vegetarian dish. Do not forget that any
deterioration of well-being is the reason to interrupt the
fasting. According to the doctors, the main indications
of intolerability of fasting are surges of arterial tension
(both up and down), abrupt decline of tonus, worsening
of sleep, increased brittleness of nails and bad skin
tightness. Not many people can go without foodstuffs
of animal origin for a long time, this particularly
concerns those who live in the cold climate. According
to most dieticians, the Lent diet is not dangerous for
healthy adults: it is crucial to provide oneself with
hot dishes in time: thick soups, vegetable stew with
potato, all sorts of mushes with as many cereals as
possible. Besides, it is Ok to eat late suppers during
Lent; moreover it is necessary. And don’t forget to eat
at least 300 g of fresh vegetables everyday – at least a
couple of bananas and a cucumber.

Animal protein can be replaced with soybeans,
mushrooms and nuts.
There is iron in pumpkin, briar, flavoring herbs
(parsley, fennel, coriander), sweet pepper, celery,
raspberries, red huckleberries and cranberries.
The iodine and vitamins found in fish can also be
found in laminaria.
Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in rape-oil and
flaxseed oil.

TRIDENT IS ONE OF STATE SYMBOLS OF UKRAINE AND ITS EMBLEM. THIS IS AN ANCIENT SYMBOL
WHICH OFFICIALLY DATES BACK TO THE RURIK DYNASTY AND DUKE VLADIMIR, AND ITS ROOTS GO
DEEP INTO PREHISTORIC TIMES. TRAVELING IN INDIA I NOTICED THE STRIKING SIMILARITY OF “TRISHUL”
(AN ATTRIBUTE OF GOD SHIVA) AND UKRAINIAN TRIDENT. BUT IT IS NOT SO SURPRISING AFTER ALL, FOR
THESE IMAGES DATE BACK TO COMMON ARIAN SOURCES.
The Ukrainian scientists and common inquisitive
folk continue to grapple with the deciphering of the
meaning of the Ukrainian trident. A venerable historian from Zhaporizhya suggested that trident is essentially an anchor. Others believe that it resembles
a falcon. Some think it is a crown. So far this game is
still interesting for those Ukrainians who grope for
their prahistoric roots.
Initially, trident is ultimately a weapon. Simply
remember the Roman retiarius gladiators armed
with trident pitchforks. Earlier still tridents were
used as fishing tools. It is no surprise that trident
has become a symbol in many world cultures and
religions. Greek sea god Poseidon cannot be imag-

ined without a trident. During Neptune festivities
which are so popular on our Asov and Black Sea
costs (where ancient Arians dwelt), a long shaft
with a tip crowned with a trident is still an invaried
attribute of the sea god.
In the hands of Zeus-Jupiter this dangerous weapon symbolized a stroke of lightning. Weapon means
power and power is the main superiority of authority. It is no coincidence that trident was a personal
sign (tamga) of great Mongol Ghenghis Khan, it
adorned coins and stamps coined by Kyiv dukes.

However, you cannot find the images of trident similar to those used in Ukraine and India. The Ukrainian trident on Ukrainian coins that I took with me
as souvenirs and on the cover of my passport became
a sort of an amulet for me – with their help I was
accepted everywhere around India. You can see tridents everywhere in India: on roofs of temples and
ashram monasteries, on the walls of buildings and on
car sides, near chapels, graves, sanctuaries, prayer
places, near springs and holy trees. At markets I
often met paupers and monks with bamboo sticks
crowned with triple edges in the form of three petals. First and foremost, this is the main weapon and
usual attribute of one of the high god of Hinduism,
the God Shiva. First, it symbolizes three main aspects of deity: creator, keeper and destroyer. Second,
its power above three worlds: earth, the underworld
and celestial. And thirdly, its power over time – present, past and future.

In Buddhism trident symbolizes three great treasures of Buddha – Dharma (teaching), Sangha (monastic order), and Buddha himself. Besides, it is the
symbol of destruction of three poisons – wrath, desire and laziness. So much of everything. Maybe our
scientists unearthing the Arian antiques in Slavic
lands should take a look at Indian trishul too?
Why do Indians need oseledets-type forelocks?
…One can’t enter the same river twice. This does not
refer to the Holy Ganges that washes away all sins
and blesses body and soul. In Ganges one can perform ablutions forever. The entire city is located on
the western bank of the Ganges on three hills that
represent thee tips of Shiva’s trident. Life is boiling

with a cocky bob I could see a Cossack from the retinue of Taras Bulba. Naturally, I asked what the Indians called this bob of hair on their heads: in Hindi
the Indians call it “chutia,” and the Nepalese call it
“tupi.” It is for these bobs of hair that the Ukrainians
are called “khokhols,” and how should we call the
residents of Hindustan who adorn their heads with
bobs (khokhols)? The bobs of the Indians are short
and thin as compared with those of the Cossacks,
which can be spun around one’s ear. However, it is
possible that the bobs of ancient Arians were longer
because they could well be the ancestors of this hair-

the enemies would often say about Cossacks. A crest
fluttering in the wind would often daunt enemies
more than a sharp sabre. In Bengal I encountered
monuments to Indian chiefs and warrior heroes.
Many of them resembled Ukrainian Cossack leaders
strongly. “Crested” Arians once came to the banks of
the Ganges from northern steppes. They did not just
bring trouble, neither were they just conquerors.
Many Arian traditions and customs became part of
global cultures and some of them are still alive on
the banks of the Ganges and Dnieper.

THE LABYRINTHS OF THE KYIV-PECHERSK LAVRA ARE AMONG THE MOST ANCIENT AND POORLY

SAYING THAT DURING THE 6559TH SUMMER (1051 A.D.) AN ATHONIUS RETUNED FROM

My grandmother used to tell me a lot about the
Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. At the end of the 19th
century she used to walk to it on foot from a village
near the Dnieper River for hundreds of kilometers.
She would walk barefoot as the other pilgrims with
her shoes over her shoulder. She would put on her
shoes only on entering the Lavra. Because she was
meeting not only a stone miracle, but saints too.
According to legend, Norman brigands had lived
here a long time ago and ruthlessly robbed any
merchant boats sailing along the Dnieper River.
The famous trade route “from the Varangians to the
Greeks” passed this way and the foreign guests had
their hands full. They used to hide the loot in their
cave and a few centuries later when a monastery was
built here its residents would search for the brigand
loot time after time. It is said that they found it.
People talked about the monastery as if about actual
facts. The better the temple, the more enigmatic the
explanation. The bell tower
was constructed by twelve brothers. They were
building it and it would sink under the ground.
Everyone was in amazement. No matter how many
bricks were set the walls would not grow and would
sink into the ground fathom by fathom. Only the
brothers would remain calm. They must have known
their trade. This is how rumor explained the presence
of cavities suited for living beneath the monastery.
Finally, they worked their way up to the onion dome.
As soon as they placed a cross above the dome the bell
tower started rising from under the ground. The people
gathered round speechless in the presence of such a
wonder as if it were a great holiday. The suddenly some
wench shouted: “How about that! One can get to the
sky like that!” Well, the Tower of Babylon also failed
to reach the firmament of heaven. With these words
the bell tower stopped rising from under the ground.
No one knows what happened in actuality. Although
people do not know many other things too.
What was the purpose of constructing cave hideouts,
when was the foundation of the monastery laid
and construction of the temple began? However,
one thing is certain: this bell tower is one of the
highest of all orthodox monasteries. After a short
span of time followers started to join Athonius who
became famous with his holy life. The bank of the
Dnieper River in this place is made up of sandstone
which is porous and easily removed with pickaxe
and shovel. That is why new caves appeared by
leaps and bounds. They made no blueprints at that
time, but from records we know that as early as in
the 12th century there were cave cells, galleries,
churches and refectories in cliffs below the Dnieper
River. Naturally, among of the main miracles
attracting pilgrims to the Lavra are incorruptible
relics of saints. There are many unsolved mysteries
in the burial grounds too: some saints were buried
naked, the others in grand clothes. They also
found remains of a hunchback tied up with ropes.
There are decaying bones too. Those of women and
children are among them. And that in the all-male
monastery! And some broken sculls… Fables and
legends are a tricky matter, the reality transforms
and gains momentum with the help of imagination
of not just single humans, but of the entire nation.
Therefore, almost all medieval authors wrote about
the gigantic length of Kyiv catacombs. Very seldom
the figure used was 10 miles, more frequently they

wrote about 100 miles, and the most generous
chroniclers wrote about 1000 miles of underground
passages without blushing.
According to legend, they extended not just under
the entire city of Kyiv, but passed underneath the
Dnieper River and even connected the city with
many settlements of Ancient Rus – Chernigov,
Smolensk, Pskov, Novgorod, Moscow and a series
of other towns. But legends aside, the facts in the
form of maps state the following: the first graphic
images of Lavra appeared at the end of 15th century.
They are performed in the form of illustrations on
the margins of a manuscript by Lviv merchant M.
Gryunevitch. His schematic drawings contain very
interesting information. On them you can see the
entrance to the most ancient part of the dungeon
reinforced with oak stilts. This ancient portal has
not been found still in spite of all the efforts of the
historians and speleologists summoned to assist

them. Another piece of interesting information
contained in the records of M. Gryunevitch: the
caves of Lavra are 50 German miles long.
The underground galleries represented entangled
and intricate mazes high enough for men to walk.
The first proper map of the caves was drawn up by
the monks of the Lavra more than 300 years ago. Its
authors created an entire system of map symbols and
presented all elements of the catacombs in accurate
proportions, which allows us to easily compare the
remaining parts of the caves with the ancient ones.
And here comes the first mystery. The map shows
two caves – legendary passages stretching beyond
the Dnieper; however their path is blocked not by
the river, but by a map’s border which ruthlessly
cuts off the answer to the question whether there
are actual passages underneath the Dnieper River.
Well known are the ancient underground tunnels
used by the veterans of World War II first upon
retreating from the German occupation of Kyiv and
later upon retaking of the capital of Ukraine. Many
people addressed the directorate of the Pechersk
Park with suggestions to explore the passages
underneath the river. However, the underground
passages seem to be accursed – each time something
stood in the way of exploring them.
Dowsing operators attempted to search for the lost
galleries spreading in all directions from the Kyiv
Lavra. Ivan Kontsov, a known fan of using dowsing
technologies to uncover historic mysteries, made a
lot for the search of Kyiv caves. During one of the
sessions of the Russian Geographic Society he talked
about an almost 100-mile long underground gallery
the vault of which was protected against collapse by
copper sheets. He managed to track this gallery with
the help of dowsing frame. Many of the people who
attended the session laughed at such a “historic” fact
and it turned out that they laughed in vain.
In a book written by medieval authors Phorius and
Cellorius as early as in 16th century, they mention
the vaults of Lavra catacombs protected by sheets
of wrought copper. This means that this gallery
really existed because Ivan Kontzov’s answers to
the questions at that session leave no doubt – he
had never read this book. Moreover, he simply
could not have invented such an unusual cover of
an underground passage from thin air. Here, next
to Lavra there is the Holy Sophia, which is another
temple not without its miracle. It soars above the city
as a boat above the waves. Well, maybe not a boat, but
the domes of the Holy Sophia astounded with their
grandeur so much that this cannot be explained by
simple craftsmanship. That is why pilgrims told each
other what the first saints saw with their own eyes:
the dome was suspended from the sky on gold chains…
Many mysteries and secrets of this ancient land have
still not been uncovered. And they will beckon us,
descendants and scions of those legends, for a long
time.

За 50 років львів’янин Іван Гречко зібрав
найбільшу в Україні колекцію
Гуцульські ікони, мальовані на склі, вироби з порцеляни, шкіри і дерева, раритетні
речі церковного вжитку і навіть рідкісні буддистські стародруки та ікони-сувії,
привезені аж із Забайкалля, а ще дерев’яні фігурки лемківських «божків», що з-під
насуплених брів пильно дивляться на кожного, хто переступає поріг квартири
Івана Гречка. За старенькими дерев’яними дверима вони – чи не єдина сторожа
величезної колекції, яку чоловік збирав впродовж усього свого життя. Часу на неї
затратив таки чимало — не так давно розміняв дев’ятий десяток літ, а зацікавленості
до старожитностей не втрачає. Напевне за це і отримав неписаний статус патріарха
українського колекціонерства.

Усе, як завжди, починалося з малих років: спочатку було просте дитяче зацікавлення, коли через брак
коштів власноруч доводилося виготовляти іграшки на
різдвяне «деревце», ялинку по-нашому, матеріалом до
яких, як у казках, слугували старі речі.
Згодом хобі: коли із містечка Надвірна, що на ІваноФранківщині, переїхав жити до Львова, то кожних
вихідних повертався у рідні краї, Гуцульщину і Покуття, де купував, випрошував, обмінював старі гуцульські
ікони«Спочатку я хотів мати п’ять ікон, — розповідає
Гречко, — але потім увійшов у смак, і кожна субота
чи неділя проходила мені у горах чи передгір’ї. Сідав
у Львові на потяг, скажімо «Рахівський», якщо треба було їхати в район Надвірної чи Делятина, або на
«Львів-Чернівці», це коли уже їхав до Коломиї чи
Снятина. З потяга пересідав на автобус, вони тоді були
дешевими, мішок на плечі і гайда селами… З подорожі
ніколи не повертався з порожніми руками… Мене вабили оці написані на склі майстрами-самоучками речі.
Вони були далекі від канонічності, святі взагалі не
мали пропорцій — завеликі руки, ноги, роздуті голови… Бувало так, що через свою неписьменність автори підписували ікони так, що важко взагалі було щось
зрозуміти. Одна частина назви могла розпочинатися
латинкою, а інша уже закінчувалася кирилицею…»
Таких як Гречко у радянські роки переслідували, їх вважали мародерами. своїми релігійними пошуками «баламутили» голови людям, що комуністам не подобалося.
«Найчастіше люди з радістю віддавали мені вживані
ікони, бо, переважно, після смерті старих молоді тримати їх у себе не хотіли. Звичайно, що грошей за своє
добро вони не брали, бо вважається, що релігійні предмети не продаються. То я привозив їм з міста навзамін
нові, але не настільки цінні. Ой, я зараз кожного образка історію пам’ятаю, то для мене ціла легенда.
В останню експедицію Іван Гречко вирушив ще до того,
як Україна здобула незалежність. Вибиратися далеко за межі Львова тепер уже не ризикує, бо вік не для
мандрівок. Чоловік жартує, що він уже не колекціонер,
а імпресаріо колекціонера Гречка. Та і джерела, які завж-

ди давали можливість знайти щось оригінальне, давно
висохли. Якщо раніше на цій ниві Гречко, за винятком одного-двох поціновувачів старовини, був сам, то
потім іконами почали цікавитися усі, хто тільки може
— приїжджали і з Києва, і з Одеси, і з інших областей
України. Тільки якщо Гречко народні вироби зберігав
і примножував, то останні за дзвінку монету продавали
їх іншим колекціонерам і найчастіше вони опинялися
далеко за кордоном. «Там багато людей з того нажило-
ся. Навіть взяти Параджанова, який знімав у горах свої
«Тіні забутих предків». Вони для зйомок у старих церквах брали під розписку ікони, хрести, а потім усе повертати навіть і не думали… Яка доля того… Хто знає?», –
розповідає колекціонер.
Зацікавленість релігійними раритетами у Гречка
не випадкова. Зізнається, що свого часу дуже хотів
стати священиком. Навіть ходив на Святоюрську
гору до о. Гавриїла Костельника, аби той взяв його
семінаристом. Уже прийшов туди поселятися із речами,
але плани зруйнував випадок — Костельника застрелили посеред вулиці, і йти вчитися не було до кого. «Та
добре, що я не став священиком, — втішає себе Греч-
ко, — бо до того треба мати покликання, а я його не мав.
Священик, лікар і учитель повинні мати покликання,
а без нього краще хай туди і не йдуть, бо з того не буде
нічого доброго. Стануть простими ремісниками, які заробляють гроші і все. Просто у мене біда була — 48 чи
49 рік був, я вчився і отримував лишень 25 чи 30 рублів
стипендії, ще тих сталінських рублів. Мама в одному
«Гулазі», десь аж за Байкалом, сестра в гетто на Півночі,
біля Курильська, а жити за щось треба… Я мав тоді двох
старших товаришів, то вони мені і сказали: «Йдемо на
священиків, бо як би там не було, а біля престолу ще
ніхто з голоду не вмер…»
Важке дитинство у Гречка було не випадковим. За
зв’язки з УПА батьків і сестру вивезли у Сибір. Згодом
помер брат, а за ним і тато.
Добре кажуть: «Що не робиться, те на краще», бо хтозна
чи досягнув б таких висот Гречко, якби навіть і отримав
духовний сан. Він двічі мав аудієнцію у Папи Римського і став першим гуцулом, який отримав прийом у нього! Фото з цієї події досі ретельно зберігається в архіві
чоловіка.
Кілька років Гречко домагався, аби місто в одному із
музеїв виділило йому виставкову площу. Усі ікони, хрести, стару порцеляну він готовий безкоштовно передати музейникам, лишень аби ті добре доглядали експонати. А дивитися справді таки є за чим. За оцінками
мистецтвознавців, вдома у Гречка зберігається найбільша
колекція гуцульських ікон на склі середини XIX — початку XX століття. Там їх понад сотня. І це якщо не брати до уваги інших предметів старовини. Нещодавно його
приватною колекцією зацікавився Український Католицький Університет, який виділив місце під зібрання.
«Дозбирався до того, що тепер воно мене з хати витісняє —
тримаю на стінах, під ліжками, у шафах, а місця мало.
То є народне добро, і я не є його власником, а тільки
депозитарієм. Хочу вернути усе народові, але з тим, щоб
воно якнайкраще було експоновано і працювало на нашу
культуру. Усе частіше про це думаю, бо ще трохи і треба
буде переноситися туди, де, як кажуть старі люди, довго
би бути — вік підпирає, завіса опускається… Тому хочеться зробити порядок, бо колекція і колекціонери мають таке правило, що як помирає людина, яка займалася
тим, і десь ту свою колекцію не записала чи не передала в
цілісності, то вона потім розлазиться по світу. Десь туди
одна річ, туди… Була файна колекція і не стало…»

У Національному культурному центрі України в Москві презентували збірку
поезій Тараса Шевченка українською та російською мовами «Я так її, я
так люблю…», виданої Київським видавництвом «Либідь» та ініційованої
Національним культурним центром України в Москві.

На початку березня в Національному культурному
центрі України в Москві в присутності Надзвичайного і Повноважного Посла України в Російській

річниці з дня народження Тараса Григоровича Шевченка.
Володимир Єльченко привітав усіх присутніх
і відзначив, що українська держава вдячна всім, хто
сприяє збереженню пам’яті Тараса Шевченка:

Івана Драча «На похорон Тараса Шевченка».
Того вечора Український дім на Арбаті ще раз
підтвердив, що він є справді Шевченковим домом,
у якому Великого Кобзаря пам’ятають, шанують та
роблять усе для увіковічення його пам’яті.

about it!”

staff speak Russian, almost half of them come from
Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. The first question

an amateurish show but should look natural and
seamless. Apart from background and professional
qualities I immediately pay attention to whether

politeness or sincere hospitality. We want our guests
to feel at home and cherished. We conduct special
trainings for personnel, explain and teach our
approach and our philosophy.”
We can only add that the fragrance of delicious
Ukrainian borsch is already in the air of Manhattan
intriguing its sophisticated residents. Without
doubt, New York will be conquered!

On March 9, 2013 Korchma Taras Bulba
restaurant and publishing house A-BA-BAGA-LA-MA-GA made a gift to Moscow
children by inviting a true magician and
master of the paintbrush and understanding
of children’s souls Konstantin Lavro, a famous
artist and illustrator to conduct a master class
in drawing. At a set time many small and not
very small guests assembled near Korchma
Taras Bulba. Their eyes shone in anticipation
of meeting such an illustrator famous for his
works of “Night before Christmas,” “Fairytale
about the cat, roster and fox,” “Christmas

drew masterpieces.
The national flavor of paintings of the artist who
graduated from the Ukrainian academy of bookprinting complemented the interior of Korchma
Taras Bulba and its unique menu. While the
kids were painting, their parents were not idle.
They were treated by waiters wearing national
costumes who offered different refreshments at
the very entrance to the restaurant for free.
Smiling Ukrainian girls, wooden furniture and
embroidered towels corresponded to the high
spirits of the guests. After the master class the
chef of the restaurant held a culinary training for
the children. Together they learned how to bake
proper cookies. The future craftsmen bustled
about wearing costumes of kitchen hands – white
aprons and hats. Their parents watched their
children with enjoyment and subsequently even
tasted some of their first culinary masterpieces.

EXPEDITIONS TO THE CARPATHIANS BY THE
AUTHOR OF THE IDEA, FAMOUS TRAVELER AND
PHOTOGRAPHER YURI BELOYVAN.
THE GUTSULS – are among the most
enigmatic and picturesque ethnicities
in the world. Their world begins
where the civilization ends. This is
the reason why the highlanders still
are self-sufficient: they tend sheep and
hand down their unique crafts from
generation to generation: potter’s craft,
woodcarving, making woolen blankets.
Publication of the album is an attempt
to recreate the primeval beauty
disappearing gradually under the
pressure of technical progress. By the
way, the album about the Carpathians
is performed in an original and unusual
format: bright modern photographs in
combination with collages from old
photographic pictures, some of which
are more than a century old. These
archive materials have been obtained
from the archives of several Ukrainian
museums. Readers can not only enjoy

and picturesqueness of their residents
but also see what the gutsuls looked

WHEN WE HEAR THE WORD “CRIMEA” WE IMMEDIATELY IMAGINE AN IDYLLIC
LANDSCAPE: BLUE SEA, HAZY MOUNTAINS AND LOTS OF SUN… AND, OF COURSE,
THE CRIMEAN WINES.
Since time immemorial vine has been cultivated in this blessed land. The wines produced
in the Crimean in Bakhchisarai and Savastopol valleys were famous far beyond the Crimea.
They still find amphoras on the seabed which were used in the antiquity to transport wine,
and recently the archeologists uncovered cave towns with preserved utensils for winemaking.
We have asked General Director of “Legendy Kryma” Mikhail
Shtyrin, an expert and connoisseur, about Crimean wines and
specifics of winemaking.
Mikhail, we know that your company is not simply
delivering wines, but it produces them too.
Indeed, we work a lot on establishing our own
winemaking enterprise in the Crimea using
cutting edge technologies. Naturally, we take into
consideration the winemaking technologies of the
Crimea. We intend to make legendary Crimean wines
affordable so that all could enjoy the taste of the
Crimean sun regardless of the season.
Do you intend to plant your own vineyards?
We have already planted our first vineyards! So far
this has been only 70 hectares but we intend to double
this figure and after several years our vineyards
should cover 1350 hectares.
Winemaking is a science. Tending young vines is like
tending a child. One has to feed it and water it on
time, help it “get on its feet and not fall down” while it
is still weak. And the most important thing is loving it
and putting
your soul into it.
We have great experts and we know that we do not
waste our time and effort in vain.
But why the Crimea? Why did you choose this region?
Crimea is an ancient land with many thousands of years
of history and deep cultural heritage. The Crimea is
inseparable from grapes and wine as it is inseparable from
world history, world culture, sun and the mountains.
The geographic latitude of our vineyards is 45 degrees
– it is well known the world over because such
“golden” winemaking regions as Medoc (Bordeaux)
in France and Veneto in Italy are located on this
latitude.
What should simple consumers know about wine to
make a good choice?
You need to choose manufacturers who have earned
good reputation. We have been in the market for
20 years producing Crimean wines, and for many
the name “Legendy Kryma” (Crimean legends) has
become a model of high quality and affordable wine.

ZUCCHINI STUFFED WITH MUSHROOMS
AND VEGETABLES
Sliver zucchini into pieces 5 cm high, cut out the core not completely by leaving the base, add salt,
fill with stuffing and stew under the foil by adding water until ready. Stuffing: slice onions, carrots,
tomatoes and boiled mushrooms, add salt and fry on the pan until golden. To serve, place zucchini on a
