2011 Annual Report
Dear friends and supporters of the
Griffin Museum,
A
Although FY 2011 has been especially
hard for nonprofit cultural organizations,
the Griffin Museum of Photography has
been able to maintain high quality in its
programming and educational efforts.
Our success is attributable to a prudent
investment strategy adopted by our
board, the hard work of our dedicated
staff, and the support of our many friends.
Our staff, led by Executive Director
Paula Tognarelli, has not only operated
within budget but also has increased
our visibility and expanded our reach.
Paula is assisted in these endeavors by
Frances Jakubek, Associate Director and
our weekend gallery manager, Martha
Stone as well as interns and volunteers.
Our exhibitions have earned frequent
and consistently positive notice. One
result of this excellent publicity has
been invitations by diverse regional
institutions to establish satellite galleries.
Four of these are the Atelier Gallery at
the Stoneham Theatre, which serves to
complement their theater productions,
the Aberjona River Gallery at the Salter
Health Care Facility, The Griffin Museum
at Digital Silver Imaging in Belmont
and the newest gallery addition at The
Cambridge Homes.
During the past year, we hosted a
record 44 events. Three of these deserve
special mention: The Focus Awards,
which recognize the efforts of people and
institutions who are not photographers
but who are engaged in areas of
technology, publishing, or curating that
support photography as an art form;
Photosynthesis, a collaboration among
the Griffin Museum, Winchester High
School, and the Boston Arts Academy
that reflects the value we place on our
educational mission; and Senior Sunday,
a series of special programs for our
elder neighbors, that recognizes learning
as a lifelong experience. Our focus on
education continues the tradition of our
founder Arthur Griffin, who endowed
darkroom facilities at both Winchester
High School and McCall Middle School.
The President’s message is meant
to speak of the prior year’s operations;
however, I would like to bring to your
attention a fast-approaching milestone. In
2012, the Griffin Museum will be 20 Years
old. In anticipation of that event, the Board
is taking a long look forward as well as to
the rear. Since our beginning, we have
been fortunate enough to have received
several bequests. The reality we face now
is that even with prudent management,
we cannot maintain our current level of
activity and quality programming without
increasing our revenue stream.
I would like to thank our Board Members
and Corporators whose efforts have
brought us such success.

EXHIBITIONS
June 2010-May 2011
The Griffin Museum of Photography was founded in 1992 to provide a forum for the exhibition of both historic and
contemporary photography. The museum houses three galleries dedicated solely to the exploration of photographic
arts: The Main Gallery, which features rotating exhibits from some of the world’s leading photographers, the Atelier
Gallery and Griffin Gallery, dedicated to showcasing the works of prominents up-and-coming artists and the works
of museum founder, Arthur Griffin. The museum also has four satellite galleries: the Stoneham Theatre, the Aberjona
River Gallery, Digital Silver Imaging and at The Cambridge Homes. These galleries futher expand the Museum’s
outreach into the local and regional community.
IN THE MAIN GALLERY
16th Juried Exhibition, Juror Joerg Colberg
June 30, 2010 – August 29, 2010
Approximately 300 photographers submitted more than 2,000 images to
juror Joerg M. Colberg, founder and editor of Conscientious, a website
dedicated to contemporary photography, for the 16th juried show. Sixty
images were selected and displayed.
Natalia Engelhardt, a New York photographer specializing in portraiture,
was selected as winner of the $1,000 Arthur Griffin Legacy Award. Keliy
Anderson-Staley received the $500 Griffin Award for her series of images, Off the Grid, a study of 30 families living in Maine without electricity, plumbing, or phones.
Christopher Rauschenberg, Marché aux Puces
September 9, 2010 – November 7, 2010
The Marché aux Puces at Saint-Ouen, just outside the city limits of
Paris, is said to be the greatest flea market in the world. “It is a
museum of antiques, a P.T. Barnum sideshow, a life size
dollhouse, a fever dream,” says Rauschenberg. He adds that
the photographs are “a salute to the dealers of Saint-Ouen,
who have created this stream-of-consciousness dream world
in search of commerce, but in search of poetry, too.
Harvey Stein, Artists Observed 1980-1985
November 18, 2010 – January 30, 2011
From 1980 to 1985, Harvey Stein photographed and interviewed more
than 165 artists, creating a collective portrait of the lives of visual artists
in contemporary America. The project resulted in a 1986 book, Artists Observed published by Harry N. Abrahms. Stein says the series of images is
“meant to be an intimate, personal, and revealing expression of what being an artist means and is about. Each photograph is a portrait of the artist
that attempts to integrate/fuse/relate the artist to the art shown. Hopefully,
what emerges is a psychological and sociological look at a very vital and
interesting group of people - those who create art and who, in doing so,
enrich and affect the very fabric of all our lives.”

Barbara Crane, Challenging Vision
February 10, 2011 – May 1, 2011
For more than 60 years, Barbara Crane has been stretching the boundaries of photography through single images, sequences, grids, and scrolls that range in size from
intimate to grand. This exhibit was a retrospective of her work. The photographs ranged
from early studies of human form through chronicles of Chicago city life to explorations
of nature. They are dynamic, bold, and abstract depictions of the rural and urban, the
familiar and esoteric. Her highly experimental and tremendously varied photographs
animatedly challenge photography’s very character as a descriptive tool.
Photosynthesis VI: A Collaboration with Winchester High School and
The Boston Arts Academy
May 12 – June 19, 2011
By creating photographic portraits of themselves and their surroundings, students from
the two schools explored their sense of self and place in a unique collaborative program
at the Griffin. In its sixth year, the five-month program connects approximately 40 students - 20 from each school - with each other and professional photographers. The goal
is to increase students’ awareness of the art of photography, as well as how being from
different programs and different schools affects their approach to the same project. During the course of the project, students met with photographer Barbara Norfleet, who was
director and curator of the photography collection at the Carpenter Center at Harvard for
30 years. Chris Zedano talked with students about his Staples Street Project, and Alison
Nordstrom, curator of the George Eastman House and photographers Sam Sweezy and
Rania Matar met with students for a group discussion of the work edit for exhibition.

PROGRAMMING
June 2010-May 2011
This year the Griffin Museum continued its commitment to offer dynamic and vibrant educational programs. Here we highlight some
examples out of the 40 programs offered in fiscal year 2011.
Panel Discussion Friday, February 18, 2011
Photographers Barbara Crane, Rita Maas, and Svjetlana Tepavcevic talked about their photographic
journeys and the influences that led to the imagery on view in their exhibits. The discussion was
facilitated by Archy LaSalle, photographer, educator, and member of the Griffin Museum board.
Member in Focus
In addition to our Critic’s Pick and Virtual Online Gallery, the Griffin Museum is now highlighting the
work of museum members on its website.
New Partnership! The Griffin Museum is part of the Blue Star Museums partnership among Blue
Star families, the National Endowment for the Arts, and more than 700 museums in all 50 states. It
offers free admission to active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through
Labor Day, September 6.
An Insider’s Look at Food Photography March 15, 2011
In anticipation of the upcoming Taste of Winchester event, photographer Tony Scarpetta presented
An Insider’s Look at Food Photography. Scarpetta set up a food shoot and discussed the challenges
and successes of photographing food.
The Griffin Museum continues to offer their stalwart Senior Sundays. This program brings working
photographers to speak at the Griffin. Open to all. The Griffin is thankful for the continuous support
of the Enka Foundation, Salter Healthcare Inc, New Horizons and the Mount Vernon House. Some
of the artists that presented this year were Frank Tadley, Lauri Robertson, Dick Simon, Lisa Tang
Liu, Alice Shafer and Cynthia Clark.

New England Portfolio Reviews The New England Portfolio Reviews is an opportunity for emerging and
established photographers to meet with curators, teachers, gallerists, and other image professionals. The
Reviews served both individuals who are just embarking on their careers and those who have several
years of experience and are hoping to reach new audiences by initiating connections with leading figures
in the busy New England photography world. Curators, educators and gallerists from all over the state
come to Boston for this event. The Griffin Museum partnered with the Photographic Resource Center and
Northeastern University. Sponsored by Digital Silver Imaging and Ava Art.

Since 2006 the Griffin Museum has given an annual award to recognize individuals who have made critical contributions to the
promotion of photography. The prestigious Focus Awards are presented in three categories: The Life Time Achievement Award,
given to an individual whose ongoing commitment to photography has created far reaching impact; the Rising Star award given to
an emerging force that the photographic community is watching with great enthusiasm; and the New England Beacon, recognizing a
local individual whose work brings prominence to the local photographic scene. This year’s recipients were:
Life Time Achievement: James K. Colton, photography editor, Sports Illustrated
Rising Star: David Bram, founder, Fraction Magazine

discusses his thematic books, such as the role and place of postcards in Prairie Fires &Paper Moons, and marine photos in On the
Wind. The lecture was presented in collaboration with Book Ends of Winchester.
Summer Camp
Collage/Assemblage Week: July 5-9, Grades 5-9
The Collage Assemblage class is designed to explore multi-media, collage, and assemblage techniques. In each class, students
created 2D and 3D artwork from suggested themes, techniques, or inspiration from artists and art movements. Students developed
individualized artistic styles, creativity, and delve into this popular art form. The class’ artwork was displayed in a culminating art
show in the museum galleries.
Photo Arts Week: July 12-16, Grades 5-9
The Photo Arts class is designed to show students that the photograph can be a building block for greater works of art. This class
used digital photography, Adobe Photoshop, and fine art techniques to explore a variety of photographic and artistic styles; such as
photo alteration, printmaking, portraiture, and more. Students used topics from current events, their community, and their own lives
as subjects for daily and weekly art works. The class’ artwork was displayed in a culminating art show in the museum galleries.
Elementary Creative Arts and Photography Week: July 19-23, Grades 1-4
This class was designed to introduce elementary aged children to a variety of photographic and visual art skills. Each day, students
had fun exploring a variety of art mediums and introductory photographic activities. Throughout the week, children built art skills as
they developed creativity, self-expression, and a love of art.
