MOOSE IN COLORADO
2016 was an interesting year for Moose in the
State of Colorado and as a result they made
the news in many different papers. Most of
the articles highlighted the growth in their
population which, is now at 2,550.
Historical records from the 1850’s indicate that
moose would pass through the State on occasion
but did not live here on a permanent basis. In
the late 1970’s, Colorado officials decided to
reintroduce moose in hopes of establishing a
resident population for hunters and wildlife
viewers. In 1978 plans were finalized and 24
moose from Wyoming and Utah were moved
into North Park, near Walden. The moose who
moved into the state flourished and as a result
the state legislature, in 1995 declared Walden
the “Moose Viewing Capital of Colorado.” The
population has not only increased but has also
spread into areas along the Front Range, Estes
Park, and Aspen. In 2016 Colorado flew 20
moose from Walden to Meeker in hopes they
will establish there as well.
For many people few experiences are as
exhilarating as witnessing a massive moose
come out of the brush and set its sights on you.
The nearly 40 year reintroduction effort has
paid off for sportspeople and has become a main
attraction for those who enjoy watching wildlife.

Ruth Lillestolen was born in Norway but has lived
in America for over 60 years. Ruth was married
for 57 happy years and has 3 children. Ruth had
her first son, Ole in Norway and then came to
the United States with her husband. She then
had another son, Harald, and a daughter named
Karen in North Dakota. Ruth was a homemaker
and worked for a bit as a nurse’s aide. She enjoyed
doing handwork to keep her busy as well.
Ruth lived many years of her life on the East coast
including; New Jersey, Connecticut, and North
Dakota. She is well-traveled and her favorite
places she has visited were Canada and Europe.
Before Ruth and her husband came to America he
had a clothing store very close to Sweden. Once
they came to America he got a job at Princeton

grandfather clocks in their basement. He would
give them to family members when they got
married or on special occasions. Ruth still has
a grandfather clock with stunning detail which
she just adores.
Ruth is very friendly and enjoys visiting with
other residents and staff. Although Ruth is a
new to New Mercer Commons, it is instantly
noticeable she is a friendly, warm-hearted woman.
