New Mercer Commons housing market, and local businesses are flourishing. Some of the many awards Fort Collins has won are: Top 10 Best Metros for Female Entrepreneurs: Forbes - Oct 2015 No. 13 Best Place to Live: Livability.com Sep 2015 No. 4 Next Top 10 Cities for Tech Jobs: Fast Company - Jul 2015 HAPPENINGS O c t ober 2 016 900 Centre Avenue Fort Collins, CO 970-495-1000 No. 9 of 2015’s “Top 10 Healthiest Cities”: Livability.com - Apr 2015 MOOSE IN COLORADO 2016 was an interesting year for Moose in the State of Colorado and as a result they made the news in many different papers. Most of the articles highlighted the growth in their population which, is now at 2,550. Historical records from the 1850’s indicate that moose would pass through the State on occasion but did not live here on a permanent basis. In the late 1970’s, Colorado officials decided to reintroduce moose in hopes of establishing a resident population for hunters and wildlife viewers. In 1978 plans were finalized and 24 moose from Wyoming and Utah were moved into North Park, near Walden. The moose who moved into the state flourished and as a result the state legislature, in 1995 declared Walden the “Moose Viewing Capital of Colorado.” The population has not only increased but has also spread into areas along the Front Range, Estes Park, and Aspen. In 2016 Colorado flew 20 moose from Walden to Meeker in hopes they will establish there as well. For many people few experiences are as exhilarating as witnessing a massive moose come out of the brush and set its sights on you. The nearly 40 year reintroduction effort has paid off for sportspeople and has become a main attraction for those who enjoy watching wildlife. 9th Best Bike City: Bicycling Magazine Sep 2014 America’s Safest Driving City: Allstate Aug 2014 7th on Best Places for Business and Careers: Forbes - Aug 2013 Ranked 3rd in the nation on Best Places to Do Business list: Forbes.com - Jun 2012 5th Best Places for Business and Careers: Forbes - Jun 2011 The City maintains more than 600 acres of parks, 40,000 acres of natural areas, 20 miles of off-street hike/ bike trails, three golf courses, a racquet center, three swimming pools, an ice rink and a community center.
