Jon Bailey Jon and Liz Bailey, AZ-K CD Director’s Corner By: Jon Bailey Sad news to report about one of our own GWRRA AZ-K members. The following is From Sandi Burns ... Bob was such a nice guy. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him! Jonathan Chapter Educator’s Corner Submitted by: Barry Covard DWD – DRIVING WHILE DISTRACTED Cliff Simpson, Arizona District Motorist Awareness Coordinator Last month I shared an editorial written by Sharon Stanley in late 2010. Sharon wrote: “The seriousness of DWD? Even the U.S. Department of Transportation is taking action on it and held a Distracted Driving Summit on September 30 and October 1. “We must act now to stop distracted driving from becoming a deadly epidemic on our nation’s roadways,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.” My friends, I am convinced that DWD IS ALREADY A DEADLY EPIDEMIC ON OUR NATION’S ROADWAYS! Around May of 2011, I saw a report on a tragic, preventable accident. A Phoenix firefighter had taken a day of his vacation time to lead a small group of his fellow firefighters on a motorcycle ride to a fundraiser of some kind. While stopped at a red light, many of the firefighters were killed and the rest injured when a garbage truck hit the group from behind. (This is a good place to insert a reminder to “watch your back” when stopped.) Later, the driver admitted that he had been filling out his paperwork as he drove in order to save time at the end of the day. I felt like screaming at the TV screen, “YOU IDIOT. YOU TOOK THOSE INNOCENT LIVES JUST TO SAVE TEN MINUTES AT THE END OF THE DAY?” Talk to almost any motorcyclist and they will tell you stories about folks in their “cage” who were DWD. “They came from the freeway on-ramp and would have hit us had we not been driving defensively.” Today, a “cager” exited I-17 south of Flagstaff, came up the ramp and stopped – briefly. Char and I were on our trike on the cross road, approaching from his right, and the dummy pulled out right in front of us. Another distracted driver? Perhaps? Unfortunately, motorcyclists are not blameless. Several of our GWRRA friends have told us about seeing other motorcyclists with a cell phone to their ear while riding. Char and I saw a rider who appeared to be texting while riding. I know a rider who was trying to get his cell phone to connect to his GPS via Bluetooth so he could answer his phone while riding. And how many of us get distracted looking at our GPS screen, listening to music, talking on the CB or on the intercom with our corider? Did you ever have an argument with someone, then drive away angry? Or did something bad happen at work, and that was all you could think about as you drove home? I’m convinced that there almost all drivers are somewhat distracted while driving! But it doesn’t stop there. Recently on national news I saw a report about a researcher who was examining peoples’ ability to “multi-task” while driving. Each driver was fitted with electronic probes attached to their head which sent data to an on-board computer. The driver went through a course with numerous obstacles as distractions were added. The radio was turned on. Then they answered a cell phone call. Next they were instructed to send a short text message. And there were other distractions. The conclusion was that almost everyone’s driving ability is impaired when distracted. The researcher also shared that most people are less efficient and effective when multitasking, rather than concentrating on one thing at a time. In fact, only about one tenth of one percent is actually MORE effective and efficient when multitasking. But wait – there is more. A few days ago on a morning TV show we saw a reporter interviewing folks in New York after they crossed a busy street at a crosswalk. The people interviewed were WWD “Walking While Distracted.” Some had been crossing the street while talking on their phones; others were texting; and still others were wearing headphones. When the reporter asked each “Distracted Walker” if they thought crossing the street while (texting) was dangerous, most said something like “Yeah, I suppose so.” IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT THEIR ACTIONS PROBABLY WOULD NOT CHANGE! So what is my point? Just this: A huge percentage of our population age (ten?) and above is going through the day without really concentrating on the task at hand! Cagers, motorcyclists, bikers, hikers and pedestrians are not paying attention to what they are doing! For us motorcyclists who want to protect our “assets”, it is imperative that we (1) Pay attention to our driving, (2) Always drive defensively, and (3) AVOID DISTRACTIONS to your driving. At the beginning of my “sermon” I stated that “I am convinced that DWD IS ALREADY A DEADLY EPIDEMIC ON OUR NATION’S ROADWAYS!” Therefore, I will be sharing more information about DWD – Driving While Distracted in future newsletters. What can YOU do? Talk to your family members, your friends and neighbors about the dangers of DWD! Do anything you can to make folks understand that DOING ANYTHING WHILE DISTRACTED could quite possibly cause injury or loss of life! ### Submitted by: Barry Covard Chapter Safe Miles Program Please remember to submit your miles each month at the chapter meeting on the “sign in sheet” or email them to Nancy Hrigora at [email protected] the end of each month.
