All SOHACC members that attended the 2013 Christmas party had a great time even thou
the weather tried to change our plans! The food was superb as usual and the gift exchange
was hilarious! That day, when I arrived in Klamath Falls, the sign across from Home Depot was
reading 12 degrees, and then on the way home it read 5 degrees! We had gotten 9 to 12
inches of snow just before that!
I guess that was nothing compared to the temperatures a couple of weeks later, we were
reading minus 23 degrees and hearing stories of temperatures down to minus 40 degrees, well
we have weathered the first storm, just waiting to see what January will bring to us!
Hopefully, there weren’t too many frozen pipes and cars not starting, and we were all able to
get water to our animals.
Enjoy the pictures from the party!
Also, at the party, we had elections for our 2014 SOHACC officers, here are the results:

Our club was well represented during December; we even got two articles in the local Herald and News!
The first event was the food drive; on Sunday afternoon, the 15th of December, members of the Southern
Oregon Horse and Carriage Club and the staff and friends of Klamath Equestrian Center gathered to carol and
collect food for the local food bank. They started at Roosevelt Elementary and sang all over the El Dorado,
Hot Springs neighborhoods. Blessed by a beautiful warm day, they collected a good deal of food and spread
cheer to the neighbors.
Next, SOHACC Members gave an estimated 200 or so kids and family members from Early Childhood
Intervention wagon rides at the Klamath County Event Center December 19th. The crew made good use of the
people mover while the ponies had a break.
And then………..Santa came to Sprague River!!!

CAA Driver Prof. Study Group from Kathy Graves
I would like to host a study group get-together for anyone interested in talking about the contents of the syllabus
for the Level 1 and Road Driving Evaluations. With a mix of working people and those retired I figure a
Saturday would probably be the best bet. I could do some evenings but hesitate to put people out on the roads
during the winter.
So, how does Saturday, January 18 look? We could meet at my house around 1:00. I will provide nibbles and
snacks. Nasty weather or icy roads would cancel or postpone to the following Saturday.
My idea about this meeting would be to go through the syllabus as completely as possible since we only did an
overview at the clinics in November. This would not be a hands on demo, but we could always access my
harness, vehicle and horse if needed.
Let me know what you think, and please RSVP if you plan to attend. I know this is MLK Birthday weekend, so
if another date would work better, please let me know.
IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN-- PLEASE COMPLETE
(TWO PAGES) AND BRING TO THE MEETING OR MAIL, YOUR
2014 MEMBERSHIP FORMS!
Horse Book Reviews by Kathy Graves
Over the years I have amassed quite a collection of books about horses, so I thought I would share some of them
with you. Many, if not most of these reviews, are taken from the dust jackets of the books in my collection, so I cannot
claim originality. They do, however, say what I would have said and are a good representation of the content of the book.
Hopefully there is enough here to entice you to read some of them. The books in my collection are mostly about
individual horses, some of whom are/were famous and some you may never have heard of - such as this first book.
Beautiful Jim Key: the Lost History of a Horse and a Man Who Changed the World.
By Mim Eichler Rivas.
Jim Key, a horse, became one of the most heralded and beloved heroes of his day. He was famous not for his
beauty or for his speed, but instead for his exceptional intelligence. He was said to have had an IQ equivalent to that of a
sixth grader. He exploded on to the national scene in 1897 by demonstrating inexplicable abilities to read, write, spell, do
math, tell time, sort mail, cite biblical passages, and debate politics.
Jim performed in nationwide expositions and world fairs, smashing box-office records and overcoming hurdles of
prejudice and skepticism.
Jim’s journey is coupled with his trainer and best friend, Dr. William Key, a self-taught veterinarian, former
slave, Civil War veteran, prominent African-American entrepreneur and one of the most renowned horse whisperers of his
time.
The author unravels the mystery of their disappearance and examines how a dramatic shift took place in the public
mind that made kindness to animals a cornerstone of modern civilization.
HAPPY NEW YEAR AND BEST WISHES FOR A WONDERFUL 2014!
