in the Light of Michaelic World Affirmation.” Like
the Anthroposophical Society, the individual confronts the same challenges as other contemporaries
and must also find a connection to the world—as a
basis for self-knowledge.

THE RELATIONSHIP OF
ANTHROPOSOPHY & YOGA
David Taulbee Anderson
These lectures will focus on the processes involved
in meditation as described in anthroposophy and
Raja Yoga. All other schools of yoga and branches
of anthroposophy are to be considered as helps
and supports leading towards the results of the
three phases of meditation. The fruits of these can
contribute to various compartments of life and be
of great practical benefit in all aspects of life and
culture. Part1: The Seven Schools of Yoga: 1. Raja
yoga, 2. Karma yoga, 3. Jnana yoga, 4. Hatha yoga,
5. Laya yoga, 6. Bhakti yoga, 7. Mantra yoga. Next

DAVID TAULBEE ANDERSON: has taught drawing
and Wagner painting around the world. He holds an
MA in Art and certificates from Emerson College
(Waldorf education), and the Wagner School at the
Goetheanum (teaching painting).

primal sense. Each person will work out their contributions
in their personal manner with the integrating help of the directors. No experience is necessary, only a desire to be a part
of a Gesamtkunstwerk or “Total Work of Art.” We will meet
once or twice a month to develop the performance. The piece
will end up with a performance time of between an hour and

THE PERFORMANCE GROUP *NEW* CHILD DEVELOPMENT
Attention all artists, musicians (any instrument),
Linda Garofallou
singers, video or film artists, dancers, eurythmists,
speech formation performers, designers, sewing people, puppeteers, actors, and anyone who
does anything creative or would like to learn how,
beginners and professionals alike! We are beginning a performance group, directed by Vincent
Roppolo and David Taulbee Anderson, working
on a piece by David in the direction of opera in its
Healthy nurturing touch is critical to the
social, emotional, behavioral and physiologic development of children. This workshop focuses on the impact of early tactile
and sensory experience on achievement of
self-regulatory milestones in the first year of life. We will see
how child development and relatedness can best be understood through the prism of sensory experience, in which the
skin and touch serve as
the bridge between the
child’s inner and outer
worlds. Physiological,
embryologic, cultural,
and historical roots of
touch will widen how
we understand this
non-verbal yet uniquely
relational experience.
Topics of discussion:
neuroscience of interpersonal touch; physiologic, emotional,
social & behavioral effects; embryology & cell physiology;
genetic basis for touch effects; cultural and historical foundations; debunking the theory of spoiling; medical research.
LINDA GAROFALLOU, MS, LMT, CEIM: is Infant & Pediatric
Massage Therapist at the Center for Autism & Early Childhood Mental Health at Montclair State University. She has
worked with families and children with a wide range of
serious medical diagnoses and has developed a variety of
pediatric massage programs for at-risk children & families.

Michaelmas marks both nature’s harvest season
and a time when the imprint of our “summer
sleep” is moved toward the soul fructification of

BRAKING FOR ALLIGATORS: From
Normal to Possibly Healthy
Alexander Dreier
A humorous monologue drawing on the author’s medical
odyssey through a mind-field of symptoms, acronyms, and
neuro-jargon to his confirmed diagnosis of Lewy Body Disease, a neurological condition with intriguing epistemological consequences. While largely comedic in nature, “Braking
for Alligators” has its reflective moments, covering a wide
territory ranging from the experience of cognitive impairment to the ontology of “visual illusions” and hallucinations,
as well as the deeper meanings of illness and why we keep
losing our glasses.
ALEXANDER DREIER: humorist, retired psychologist,
and longtime student of Georg Kühlewind has written and
performed a number of autobiographical comic monologues
over the past 15 years. All of his monologues explore what it
means to be human, and how life can so often be unexpectedly and exquisitely humorous. Alexander is a distant cousin
of the renowned—and little understood—anthroposophical
lecturer known as “Herr Dreier.”

do we belong to the earth. The deeper understanding of the Christ derives from our effort to attain a

the Yoga of Will. Its goal is taking the reins of the soul forces
of the human being with the will and eventually entering into
the will force itself as the highest aspect of human soul life
which merges with universal will. Next dates: 11/12, 12/10.

Spirit. Its windows show experiences
on the path of the spirit pupil. (At

Anthroposophical Society and the
School for Spiritual Science, he is a
priest in the Christian Community
and lives in Nuremberg, Germany.
He gave five very well received lectures at the recent festival and conference on Rudolf Steiner’s four mystery dramas.

Reflections on My
Grandfather
Owen A. Barfield
Owen Barfield (1898-1997) was one of
the preeminent anthroposophists of the 20th century and a
well-known thinker from his university days, when he was a
founding member of the “Inklings”—a group that included
C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams. OB’s History in English Words and Poetic Diction are well-known to
lovers of language. What Coleridge Thought did much to
reveal that famous poet’s greatness as a general philosopher,
and OB’s insights into the evolution of consciousness (see
Saving the Appearances: A Study in Idolatry) have met with
considerable attention in the USA from the 1960s forward.

THE LIGHT OF ANTHROPOSOPHY
This afternoon Dan Mackenzie will share his
experience with this initiative founded by Marshall Rosenberg and based on the principles of
nonviolence—“the natural state of compassion
when no violence is present in the heart.” NVC
begins by assuming that
we are all compassionate
by nature and that violent
strategies—whether verbal
or physical—are learned
behaviors taught and

supported by the prevailing culture. Dan will outline some of the basic
principles of NVC and explore what he deems its
harmonious and mutually supportive relationship with the spiritual self-transformational work
of anthroposophy. Dan is a film & TV composer,
songwriter, music producer and a member of the
council of Anthroposophy NYC.

Join us for a haunting evening of dramatic
readings and musical interpretations of
Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell Tale Heart,”
“The Raven,” and “Bell Bells Bells.” Lenard
Petit from The Michael Chekhov Acting
Studio joins forces with award-winning
composer Daniel Kelly and his inventive
chamber ensemble to pull at the fabric of
Mr. Poe’s textured writing. Poe’s poems
and stories of suspense and terror have
their own place in our collective cultural psyche. Come hear
these stories anew, with Lenard Petit’s powerful performance
accompanied by animated and uncanny music from Kelly,
whose work Time Out New York called “powerfully moving.”

JOHANNES KÜHL: born in 1953 in Hamburg.
Studied physics, did research on fluid dynamics at
the Max Plank Institute. After a year of research at
the Goetheanum, he taught physics, chemistry and
mathematics at the original Waldorf School in Stuttgart. Since 1996, he has been leader of the Science
Section and member of the collegium for the School
of Spiritual Science. Core areas of interest are modern physics and optics, as well as Goethean science.

THE ADVENT GARDEN
At this time of year when darkness of
night threatens to overcome the light
of day, we walk the Advent Garden, an
inward and outward spiral of greenery
and a dynamic image of the past meeting
the future. Lighting our candle from a flame representing the
heart of the universe, each individual walks alone to place
our own little light on a star in the outward spiral of the garden. Simple and profound meet in one great image evocative
of the bridge between spirit and matter.
CYNTHIA LANG: is a Waldorf remedial and kindergarten
teacher. She has conducted Waldorf playgroups, taught children privately and offered parenting workshops. She has been
involved with festival study and has led the Advent Gardens
for children and adults for more than 15 years.

THE RELATIONSHIP OF
These lectures focus on the processes
involved in meditation as described in
anthroposophy and Raja Yoga. The fruits
can be of great practical benefit in all life
and culture. Part 4: Jnana Yoga and Shankaracharya. The
path of philosophy and knowledge. The terms for the spectrum of members of the human being and their philosophical
elaboration by Shankaracharya were adopted by the Theosophical movement which provided a language framework
for concepts and became a vocabulary with which Steiner
could develop his ideas. Steiner also used parallels in western
philosophy. This is a Yoga of Thinking. Next date: 1/21.

be of great practical benefit in all life and culture. Part 5:
Hatha Yoga & Breathing: the New Yoga. This is the yoga of
Asanas. Postures and breathing are of primary importance in Hatha Yoga. Steiner’s
new yoga transforms the microcosmic
breathing of ancient yoga into a macrocosmic breathing with the seasons and
finds paths through artistic activity and a
breathing of the senses. Next date: 2/11.

We have at this point gone over two scenes
and are making headway in finding forms
for the performance. We are still welcoming new members. As we find our way to
seeing how individuals can interact to make a whole, the
piece is becoming a reality. This is a group creative process
that is a training for a new type of social future. The human
being of the future will become more and more creative and
his world will not be so much given to him from outside will
be produced out of the inner life. This must become a social
activity so that an egocentric private world of individuals
will be overcome.

James’ tragic story of a woman’s relationship with her father
and a possible fortune hunter. Faithful to James’ original
text, four actors (Bethany
Caputo, Chris Smith, Fern
Sloan, and Ted Pugh) will
narrate the story and play all
of the characters in this 19th
century masterpiece. In development since 2011, it comes
to NYC after an initial run in
Spencertown, NY. — The Actors’ Ensemble was founded
in 1985 in New York City by
a group of professional actors
(members of Anthroposophy NYC) inspired by acting techniques taught by Russian-born actor Michael Chekhov. TAE
has created and performed theatre productions across the
US and in Europe, developed a two year college level acting
program through Sunbridge College, and in March 2015 will
open a new acting school—the Michael Chekhov School, to
be located at Solaris, 360 Warren Street, in Hudson, NY.

of anthroposophic psychology & psychotherapy. In November 1910 in Berlin Rudolf Steiner introduced his only dedicated psychology course. Modern psychology was still in its

role in its development. He never gave a follow up psychosophy course as it was never requested, but he predicted that
this would take place in the future.

Steiner books over a hundred plus years
but not, perhaps, the mystery dramas. Inspired by last summer’s Festival, the group has taken up the first play, The
Portal of Initiation, reading and discussing it in a circle. A
new book is a good time to join any group, and this a special
chance to get to know these remarkable plays which explore
and reveal the karmic connections and reincarnation paths
of spiritually-seeking individuals up to the 20th century.

A favorite visitor, Dr. James Dyson,
visits again on March 18th, at 7pm.
James is an anthroposophic physician whose special interests
include child development, mental health, and psychosynthesis psychology. He was a co-founder of Park Attwood
Clinic where he worked for 25 years. His topic for this evening lecture will be “The Soul’s Two Paths to the Threshold:
Buddha and Zarathustra in Our Times.” Rudolf Steiner’s
research connects two great leaders of humanity, Buddha
and Zarathustra, to two paths, one leading the soul outward
into the elements, the other inward, transforming the three
soul forces of thought, feeling, and will. In our times, Steiner
points to the need to integrate them so that the principle of
initiation becomes the principle of civilization.

DR. JAMES DYSON: an anthroposophic physician, in medical practice for 35 years. His areas of special interest and
personal research are child development, mental health and

nature of both inner and
outer growth we can more
readily take the next step
in our lives. The inner life
is not a room or space but a
living, growing world that
has its reflection in the outer sense world. Like the
outer sense world there are developmental stages
and steps that need to be lived through. In both
biographies we can learn what is being asked and
what is being cultivated in ourselves and in others.
We learn to recognise the next step and how each
individual can work towards personal and collective evolution. We will be including mysteries of
the human biography and karma along with how
to be in a living relationship to our inner and outer
worlds. In this NYC weekend we will also seek to
understand how the Easter season is reflected in
individual inner development.
Fee: One discounted fee of $175 has been arranged for

us as in ancient times. By spiritual
means it must be struggled and striven
for against a host of demons... We
must therefore get to know the powers
that would cover up and obscure all
spiritual knowledge.” So writes T.H.
Meyer, from the preface of his forthcoming book on this topic. “The world
seems to be standing within a demonic storm that threatens
to overwhelm it.” Appeals to traditional religious belief will
no longer pacify this storm, and neither will mere “good will”
suffice. How can we better recognize the deeper significance
of these times and orient ouselves accordingly?
T. H. MEYER: born in Switzerland in 1950, he is founder of
Perseus Verlag, Basel, and editor of the monthly journals Der
Europäer and the new The Present Age. His books include
Reality, Truth, and Evil, Rudolf Steiner’s Core Mission, D.N.
Dunlop, Ludwig Polzer-Hoditz, and The Development of

of Earth’s bodily energies is present in Asia through feng shui, in
the West, through geomancy, the wisdom tradition that

points of these lines (Stonehenge, the Pyramids, Sedona,

beauty of the form of the lemniscate, with a verse from Goethe
and more. Please join us for this
exploration of form and sound
in movement through the art of Eurythmy which can awaken
our creativity and enliven our life forces. [Image: The Human

eurythmy experience necessary.
Monthly Lecture – #10 of 10
These lectures focused on meditation
processes in anthroposophy and Raja
Yoga. The fruits can be of great practical benefit in all life and culture. Part
10: Rounding It All Off. The essential ideas and significant
points will be gathered together into a matured vision of the
whole. Threads presented in previous lectures will be woven
into a comprehensive picture in which the totality of previous
study material comes together. A note for fall: David’s theme
for next year is “Pharmaceutical Botany,” using plants to heal
and for health. The first lecture will be Wednesday, Sept 16,
with others following monthly on Wednesdays.

SUMMER SEND-OFF CABARET!!
Council member and singer/songwriter/producer
Dan Mackenzie is moving westward ho! this
summer and would like to bid a musical “farewell
for now” to his beloved branch members and
friends. A cabaret-style concert featuring noted
film composer Paul Cantelon (The Other Boleyn
Girl, W., The Diving Bell and The Butterfly), his
wife, chanteuse Angela McCluskey (The Wild
Colonials, Robbie Robertson, Telepopmusik), neoclassical violinist Eva Ingolf, and more will be
followed by a friendly social gathering of indeterminate length. A donation of $10 or more is
requested to benefit the branch and cover expenses.

“THE GROWING IMAGINATION”:
From the Content of Spiritual Science
David Anderson & the Artists
The current art exhibit is the work of painters exploring
the motifs Rudolf Steiner gave to those that wanted to find
a spiritual path through painting. The
motifs were given directly in picture form as
instructional models containing color and
compositional forces that allow the student
to enter into a world of forces that express
themselves through color. — The pictures
which deal with primal color forces also
express spiritual imaginations from the
contents of anthroposophy. Often pictures
are more helpful in understanding subtle
aspects of the spiritual world than written or spoken words. This Open Saturday
will guide us through the imaginative world represented
in these paintings and allow discussions and questions.
Explore what Steiner’s clairvoyant imaginations looked like,
and discover a pathway into spiritual seeing.

ST. JOHN’S FESTIVAL
Music, Poetry, Thoughts, Food, Friends!
St. John’s Tide (Midsummer) marks not
the hottest peak of summer but the longest day and greatest light. It is the great
expansion, an out-breathing of Earth’s
burgeoning life into the cosmos from the
contracted period of cold winter months. St. John’s is traditionally celebrated with great bonfires and an out-pouring
of singing and poetry. At this final festival and social event
of our season, Linda Larson will give an opening presentation with contributions from Walter Alexander, Dorothy
Emmerson, Natasha Guruleva, and others. We invite you to
a beautifully decorated space, and will provide beverages.
Offerings for sweet and savory finger-food buffet are up to
you. Please bring something delicious and seasonal to share.
These events depend on your donations, so we suggest $5 to
cover costs. The program begins at 4pm; please arrive early to

Summer Books:
Good news for
book lovers!
Rudolf Steiner Bookstore will be staying open during the
summer. Exact days and hours have not yet beeen worked
out, but while groups and programs take a break, we will be
here with air conditioning for your browsing pleasure.
Fall Plans:
Programs and study groups
will break for July and August as usual. Plans for September and beyond are not set,
but David Anderson will have a monthly lecture, we are
eager for Linda Larson to continue her monthly eurythmy
workshops, and shortly after Labor Day regular groups
are expected to resume. The first festival event is Michaelmas, on or around September 29th, and the annual
Georg Kuhlewind Memorial Lecture should be early
in October. To prepare for first-Friday meetings, Members
of the Branch or Society may visit the national website for
the theme of the year (at www.anthroposophy.org/theme).
