ver since Brendan Witt put on a pair of skates at
the age of three, he's had an edge on his
counterparts.
There is often an interesting story about why a player
picks a certain position - he enjoyed scoring goals or he
liked putting on all the goalie equipment. But unlike the
thousands of kids who chose for themselves what position
they wanted to play, Witt didn't have much of a choice.
“When I played in mites, I was one of the only kids who
could skate backwards, so I was put on defense, while the
kids who couldn't skate at all were put in goal,” said Witt
with a smile. “There was no rhyme or reason.”
Moving up the ranks from Mite to Squirt to Bantam, Witt
continued to show that he was one of the best at his age.
At the age of 14, he was recruited to play for a Midget
team in a tournament, which consisted of older players.
He made quite the impression, showing signs of his
physical presence that would one day earn him a lasting
spot in the NHL.
“I was just so much bigger than everyone, so I was able to
hold my own against kids older than me,” recalled Witt.
“In the tournament I was called up for, I remember
breaking some 16-year old kid's collar bone. After the
game, the parents ragged me about it even though it was a
clean hit. When they found out I was only 14, they stopped
hassling me.”
It was around this time that Witt realized his game would
focus around the physical side. While playing for the
Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL, Witt compiled over 200
penalty minutes in each of his three seasons. Witt's
impressive play led the Washington Capitals to draft him
11th overall in the 1993 NHL Draft in Quebec.
“I realized in Juniors that I had the opportunity to take that
next step to reach the pro level,” said Witt. “I had taken all
those little steps and needed to make one more big one. It
was a lot of sacrifice to play hockey all the time. There was
a lot of time spent away from my family at an early age.

Witt took full advantage of his opportunity, working as
hard as anyone to crack the Capitals line-up. After playing
a season with Washington in 1995-96, Witt was sent down
to the AHL for 30 games in 1996-97, but that was the only
time he would ever spend there.
The native of Humboldt, Saskatchewan proved he could
compete with the best at the NHL level. His tremendous,
hard-nosed intensity on the ice made him one of the most
feared defensemen in the league. It's no coincidence that

momentum.
That was just one example of Witt taking one for the team,
which he does often. Last season, Witt finished fifth in the
league with 207 blocked shots. Watching Witt play,
especially while on the penalty kill, can give people the
chills. Whenever the Islanders were down two men, it was
almost certain Witt would be out there. Witt's modus
operandi is to challenge the point man and move right into
a heavy slapshot that would cripple even the bravest of
souls. But despite all of his bangs and bruises, Witt only
missed one game all season.
“You hope that the protection you have on deflects most of
the blow of the shot,” said Witt. “Sometimes it goes in

so good. I learned how to block shots when I was in
Seattle and the coach would teach us the right technique
by shooting soft rubber pucks at us. The key is to get in the
shooting lane, but not slide head first. Now, I don't think
too much of blocking shots, it's second nature.”
“As one of the leaders on the team, I try to make sure
everyone is ready,” said Witt. “But at the same time, I like

Last winter I was performing as a lead in a show at Broad Hollow Theatre in West Islip that caused me to miss a ton
of Islanders games. I would bring a beat up old headset to rehearsals that only got reception if I stood at a certain spot
outside the back door to the theatre near the dressing room. The first game I missed I took glow-in-the-dark duct tape
with me to rehearsal and marked the exact spot I could stand to get the game on the head set. The Islanders were playing on opening night, so of course, I had to bring the head set. Whenever I had more than five minutes off stage, I would
grab the head set and rush outside to listen to the game. I would have full inboxes of text messages with the scores
from my friends that were stationed at their TV sets for me. After the curtain call, the Islanders were still playing so
I grabbed my costumes and ran to my car to turn on the radio just in time to hear that DiPietro had made a game winning save! I hadn't forgotten a line all night, the Islanders had a victory, and I was about to speed 23 miles on the

Don't you start getting goose bumps this time of year? Just knowing the hockey season is just around the corner is making me crazy. Every fan of every team knows what I mean. You're sitting around all summer watching a little baseball
here and there during the hot weather. Then August comes and most teams are wrapping up their signings and finalizing their pre-season roster. You've got a pretty good read on what your team may look like on the ice in the fall. And all
of a sudden it's September and in a couple of weeks, your favorite team will begin its quest for the most heralded trophy in all of sports - the Stanley Cup. We all have that warm feeling, the excitement, the optimism. Optimism regardless
of what the experts have said and written about our teams in the off-season. You still have that glimmer of hope that
your team, regardless of how far down in the standings it is predicted to finish, can pull it off. That is exactly how I feel
right now. I have hope. Hope that the Islanders will bring back the Cup. Hope that there will be a new banner in the
rafters next year. I have hope. Therefore, I'm an Islander. We're all Islanders. Let's go ISL-AN-DERS!
I LOVE living on Long Island. I could never imagine living anywhere else. Most of my family lives on Long
Island and we always share good times together. My
brother has always been an Isles fan, but I never thought
I would ever become such an avid fan myself. Even my
mom and grandparents watch each game, and my grandfather enjoys hockey more than baseball. I'm really
happy that my boyfriend brought me to every home game
last season, and he plans to bring me this season as well.
Eventually he'll catch me looking at Ricky, but that's
something that he'll have to deal with!

ike Sillinger enters his 17th NHL season and
is only getting better with age. After
producing a career year in 2005-06 by scoring
32 goals and finishing with 63 points, he followed that up
with an impressive first year on Long Island.
While playing against the opposition's top lines game after
game, Sillinger totaled 26 goals and 33 assists for 59
points. In addition, he finished with a +5 rating, 11 power
play goals, and three game winners, while tying for the
team lead with two shorthanded tallies. Perhaps Sillinger's
biggest contribution on the ice was in the face-off
category, in which he won 58.8% of his draws, placing
him third in the league.
As one of the team's alternate captains, Sillinger was an
invaluable member of the team, not only while on the ice,
but in the locker room as well. His calm demeanor and
likeable personality made him an easy fit into the Islanders'
dressing room.
Now entering his second season with the Islanders and
approaching his 1,000th NHL game, Sillinger looks to
continue his role as one of the top defensive forwards in the
league. We sat down recently with Sillinger to discuss his
thoughts on a variety of topics.
What was your first NHL season like?
When I was back in juniors, I broke into the league as a
scorer. In juniors, I had three 50-goal seasons. When I
started with Detroit they had guys like Steve Yzerman and
Dino Ciccarelli. It was a great organization, so it was tough
to get your feet wet and I pretty much broke in as a fourth
line, penalty-kill guy, and it was one of those things that if
you didn't know how to play both ends of the rink, you
weren't going to play.
As far as face-offs, when you're killing a lot of penalties
you're taking a lot of defensive zone face-offs, so if you're
not winning the face-offs you're not going to get on the ice
to kill penalties. So they kind of went hand-in-hand and
that's how I developed my two-way game. I wasn't given
much of a chance to show my offensive skill at a young
age. I was put into the role of being a defensive forward.
What is the key to staying in the NHL for so long?

For longevity you have to stay injury-free, and that's
something I've been able to do. I've been pretty lucky knock on wood - playing 70-plus games a year. I'm playing
in my 17th season and I don't know where it's gone.
When did you begin playing hockey?
I was a young kid who loved hockey. From the time I was
three or four years old I would have my skates put on for
me. I picked it up real easy. I would skate around at that age
and stickhandle well. I was fortunate to have natural talent.
I wasn't pushed by my parents. It was just something that I
loved. We had a rink right outside our house and I'd put on
my skates and go out and skate. When I was seven or eight,
14 I I s l a n d e rs I l l u s t ra t e d
I would play with the 10, 11 and 12-year olds. I would
come home every day and go skate. To this day I still love
it. I'm fortunate to be successful at it.
Who is the best leader you ever played with?
shoes to fill, but he always finds a way to get it done.
I've heard nothing but good things about Guerin, not just
on the ice but off the ice as well. Naming him captain was a
good thing for this team. I look forward to getting
acquainted with all of the new players.
I broke into the Detroit organization, so I would have to go
with Steve Yzerman. He wasn't always the biggest guy. He
was always the hardest worker and trying to better himself.
Steve would be the first one on the ice and the last one off.
You could see the dedication to the game. He wasn't a very
vocal guy, but when he would speak, people listened. He
was one of the best leaders by example. What you put in,
you get out and that's what Steve is all about.
What were your goals for training camp?
Now that you have a year under your belt on Long
Island, what adjustments do you make in your
second season?
I'm going to pretty much carry on the same way. Now that
I've been here a year, I can keep a better eye out for the up
and coming guys. As an experienced player, I try to make
everyone feel comfortable. Last year, I had to do that
myself since I didn't know too many people, but now it's
my turn to return the favor.
During training camp, I just try to get my timing back.
Obviously my conditioning isn't quite there when I first get
to training camp, since I've been off the ice for three
months. Over the summer I let my body heal, so I do just
off-ice conditioning. This first week is all about timing;
making crisp passes, doing the drills right and everything at
high tempo. You're not used to doing things at high tempo.
You need to get your skating legs and the quickness back.
What is it like playing under Ted Nolan?
I got to experience playing under a great coach last season.
He lets the players play and is very calm and cool on the
bench. When he gets excited there is a reason. By him
showing composure, it really relaxes the players. Ted
comes very prepared to practices and runs them well. He
knows about both teams well, but he doesn't worry so
much about the opposition. People said he was a player's
What activities did you do in the summer?
I was at home back in Regina for the summer with my
family. On the weekends we would head to our lake house
for relaxation. My three boys play a lot of sports during the
school year - hockey, soccer, lacrosse - so the summer is a
nice time for them to get away from it for a little while.
What's the feeling like for the home opener?
It's exciting to get back on the ice after not playing for five
months. You get that blood fever going again. There's that
anticipation of getting through training camp and back to
full-speed playing conditions.
What are your thoughts on the increased home and
home series?

ISLANDERS VS SABRES
Fact, figures and nonsense about NYI home openers
By Corey Witt
Welcome to tonight's Islanders home opener against the Buffalo
Sabres. Tonight is the 35th home opener in franchise history.
In 34 NHL seasons, the Islanders have a 22-10-1-1 record in
home openers. But that's just where the numbers begin…
• In 34 years, only four times have the Islanders had their home
opener also be their season opener. The team is just 2-2 when
that happens.

• The Islanders have won their last three home openers. They've
done so by outscoring their opponents 9-4.
• The Islanders have opened at home against the Philadelphia
Flyers six times, which is the most of any team. The Islanders
record against the Flyers in home openers is two wins, three
losses and a tie (remember those?).
• Tonight will be the first time in 34 years that the Islanders will
hold their home opener on October 6. The team has played on
this date five other times, but all on the road. On 10/6, the
Islanders have a 1-2-2 record.

franchise history. The only other game that was played earlier
in October was in 1997 when the Islanders hosted Toronto on
October 4. It was a 2-0 victory. And it wasn't even the team's

January. It was the lock-out shortened season of 1994-95 and

ON THE SOUND:
Dustin
"We lived out of town, so we had plenty of room to build
our own make-shift rink in the backyard," Kohn told
newyorkislanders.com recently. "My dad used to flood the
backyard and he'd skate around with me and my older
brother."
Islanders 2004 Second Round Draft Pick
Ready To Take The Next Step
While Kohn was too young to remember the Edmonton
Oilers during their heyday, considering he was only three at
the time of their last Stanley Cup in 1990, he was still an
avid Oilers fan and dreamed of one day lacing up his skates
for an NHL team.
Kohn
By Jason Lockhart
A
fter a successful training camp in Moncton, New
Brunswick, Islanders prospect Dustin Kohn is
primed for his first season of pro hockey on the
Bridgeport Sound Tigers' blue line. Pegged by scouts as a
two-way defenseman, Kohn has loads of potential,
considering he is only 20-years old and was a four-year
standout in the ultra-competitive Western Hockey League.
In his first season with the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL,
Kohn was only 3-6-9 in 52 games. Sixteen-year-olds, Kohn
explained, did not get much ice time. There were games
where he would only have one shift, and others where he
would have more if a player was injured. At this time,
Calgary had plenty of depth on defense and Kohn was
given little opportunity to prove himself.
What a difference a year made as Kohn jumped up to 8-35-43
in 72 games in his second season, showing doubters he had the
potential to be a strong contributor. It helped that he played the
point on a power play that included current NHL players
Andrew Ladd (Carolina) and Ryan Getzlaf (Anaheim). His
sophomore performance gave the Islanders reason to draft
him in the second round of the 2005 Entry Draft.
"Dustin is an exceptional skater and tremendously mobile,"
said Islanders Assistant General Manager Ryan Jankowski.
"His game allows him to chase down pucks and move them
up the ice on breakouts effectively."
However, Islanders management wanted Kohn to focus
more on the side of the game that is generally connected
with his position - defense. That was no problem for Kohn.
Kohn showed vast improvements the next season. While
his offensive numbers went down, he responded with a
greater effort in the defensive end. Splitting the season
between Calgary and the Brandon Wheat Kings, Kohn
finished first on Brandon with a +13. He had one final year
of eligibility in the WHL to put together a complete season.
In his final season, he found that perfect balance, setting
career highs in points with 50, while finishing first on the
team with a +23.
"In my first full season I was all about putting up as many
points as possible," admitted Kohn. "But when I was 17, I
cut back on the offense and tried to focus on making fewer
mistakes in our own end. My final year of ‘06-‘07 was my
best year because I put up good offensive numbers, while
being responsible in our own end."
As a kid, Kohn learned to skate (almost) before he learned
to walk, and by the age of five he had his own set of
equipment. At six, he was already playing organized
hockey, with his parents the driving force behind his love
for the game.

Kohn's parents were the biggest proponents of their son's
dream, taking him to morning practices and buying him
new skates and sticks every year.
"They're the reason I've been given this opportunity," said
Kohn about his new three-year contract with the Islanders.
"Without their dedication when I was younger, this could
have never happened."
Starting at six and never looking back, Kohn continued his
ascent through the hockey ranks, striving to play at the
highest level available to him.
"Billy Moores, who is now an assistant with the Edmonton
Oilers, always told me I should play at the highest level
possible," said Kohn. "Another important coach of mine
was Ted Olson, who coached me when I was 11-14. He
taught me how to work hard, but at the same time how to
have fun. He passed away five years ago, but I consider him
my most influential coach growing up."
By the time Kohn was 15, he still hadn't chosen a definite
position. He had been playing both defense and forward,
but it was during his teenage years when he started to lean
towards defense.
"I played a lot of both positions, but I realized I liked being
an offensive defenseman," said Kohn. "I liked being able to
play the point on the power play."
At age 16, Kohn was ready to make the move to junior
hockey. There was little question that he would play in
Canadian Juniors, since it was considered the most
competitive hockey at that age.
Four years later, Kohn proved he could be among the best in
the WHL and is now taking his skills to the next level. He is
still young, and has some growing to do both physically and
mentally, but Islanders management has a lot of confidence
in his ability to succeed at the pro level.
"Dustin has developed well over time," said Jankowski.
"He is certainly someone that brings defensive depth to this
organization. This season, we want to see that he's stronger,
sure of himself and has taken the necessary steps to
becoming an NHL player."
In a short period of time, Kohn could be gracing the Nassau
Coliseum ice and wowing fans with his seamless breakout
passes and offensive punch.
“I'm really excited about starting the season,” said Kohn.
“I'm excited for the challenge and hope I can show that I
belong at this level.”
