News Media:
The people and the communities of Iowa are the true backbone of RAGBRAI , Register’s
Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa . The efforts of the oldest, largest and longest touring
bicycle ride in the world go beyond the RAGBRAI staff and chair people in each community.
By the time RAGBRAI and its riders roll into each overnight town, community volunteers will
have committed the past 6 months ensuring the rider experience is the best it can be. They
will have worked to make 10,000 plus people feel at home and understand what life in Iowa is
all about.
®
™
You will enjoy the things that have made this event memorable for the last 43 rides— the
sights, the sounds, the friends, the food— but most of all the hospitality of the warm and
friendly people of the Hawkeye state.
This media kit is designed to give you a range of information about the ride, the people
involved and how the ride began and has evolved. We have included the 2016 RAGBRAI
logo and guidelines for your use.
If it is your first time covering or you are a veteran, we know that you will have a memorable
experience. Enjoy!
Sincerely,
T. J. Juskiewicz,
RAGBRAI Director

PRESS RELEASE
SPECIAL EVENTS OF RAGBRAI
PeopleForBikes Day
Tuesday, July 26
PeopleForBikes is the movement to improve bicycling in the U.S. By collaborating with millions
of individual riders, businesses, community leaders, and elected officials, PeopleForBikes
unites Americans to boost bicycling on a national level for results that can be seen locally.
PeopleForBikes will once again be on the route asking RAGBRAIers to join the movement!
Chris Charron had many passions in life, of which one significant outlet was supporting
RAGBRAI. Whether he was riding with his family and friends, reporting through virtual
RAGBRAI in the early hours of the morning, creating freedom rides to honor the lost lives on
9/11 or aiding the organization in adopting the digital era over the last 20 years – Charron was
and is a significant face and voice in RAGBRAI history.
The evening tribute will take place in Leon, Iowa at the Freedom Rock located on the town
square. Many Businessolver team members will participate in this leg of the ride in honor
of Chris Charron. This stop on RAGBRAI tour seems fitting given Chris Charron’s strong
patriotism. Friends and family will have the opportunity to share stories and pay tribute. In true
Chris Charron fashion, a toast in his honor will conclude the ceremonies.
RAGBRAI Jersey Day
Wednesday, July 27
Celebrate all that is RAGBRAI from Leon to Centerville by wearing your 2016 RAGBRAI
Jersey. If you didn’t order one with your ride registration, you can pick one up at the RAGBRAI
Merchandise trailers.
RAGBRAI College Jersey Day
Friday, July 29
Show your college spirit! We encourage riders to wear their colors and celebrate their college
loyalty on the official “College Jersey Day” while riding from Ottumwa to Washington.

PRESS RELEASE
THE DREAM TEAM
The Dream Team was created in 1997 by Bike World, The Des Moines Register, RAGBRAI
and Riverfront YMCA of Des Moines to provide the opportunity for young people to be
involved in a year-long training effort to ride RAGBRAI. The mission of The Dream Team is to
assist youth in developing a healthy mind, body and spirit and a productive, positive approach
to life’s challenges.
The Dream Team accepts riders ages 13 to 18 who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity
to participate in this event. The year-long commitment for the youth involves training twice a
week, taking overnight rides and weekend trips, learning bike safety and etiquette and setting
and achieving goals. For their hard work and efforts, members of The Dream Team receive
a bike and necessary gear to ride the event, along with the assistance of volunteer mentors
throughout the year.
The cost to provide the training and equipment for The Dream Team is approximately $1,000
per teen. Donations to The Dream Team are tax deductible and are deeply appreciated to
keep this dream alive.

REGISTER’S ANNUAL GREAT BICYCLE RIDE ACROSS IOWA™
RAGBRAI®: ITS BEGINNINGS AND WHAT IT HAS BECOME
When RAGBRAI (RAG-breye) was discovered in 1973, no one could have imagined that it
would become the oldest, largest and longest and probably most unique bicycle touring ride
in the world. An acronym for Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa™, RAGBRAI
began in 1973 when Des Moines Register columnist and copy editor John Karras suggested
to fellow columnist Donald Kaul, who wrote for The Des Moines Register from Washington,
D.C., that Kaul should ride his bicycle across Iowa, writing columns about what he saw. Kaul
challenged Karras to join him and they selected a route that began in the northwest Iowa town
of Sioux City and ended on the state’s eastern border in Davenport. The unofficially dubbed
“Great Six-Day Bicycle Ride Across Iowa” went from the Missouri River to the Mississippi
River.
About a month before the ride, Karras wrote an article in the Des Moines Sunday Register
telling people about the upcoming event and inviting others to join them. To their amazement
about 300 riders joined them when they rode out of Sioux City on Sunday morning. During the
week the number fluctuated to a high of 500 on the leg between Ames and Des Moines, with
about 115 people riding the entire distance.
Among the many interesting people was 83-year-old Clarence Pickard of Indianola, Iowa. In
spite of having had almost no preparation, Pickard, wearing a silver pith helmet, long-sleeved
shirt, long trousers and high-top shoes, and riding a rather heavy woman’s touring bicycle,
rode the entire distance. The reports in The Des Moines Register about Pickard and others on
the ride, and the response of the public along the way, captured the attention of other Iowans.
Originally scheduled as a one-time event, there was never any intention to have another ride.
The Des Moines Register readers and particularly those who were unable to attend the first
year, demanded that it be done again so they could experience the fun.

REGISTER’S ANNUAL GREAT BICYCLE RIDE ACROSS IOWA™
In August of 1974 about 2,700 people showed up in the parking lot of the Howard Johnson
Motor Lodge in Council Bluffs to begin SAGBRAI, the “Second Annual Great Bicycle Ride
Across Iowa.” This seven-day ride meandered its way across the state through Atlantic,
Guthrie Center, Des Moines, Marshalltown, Waterloo and Monticello to end in Dubuque. It was
apparent that a ride had been born!
The ride’s name was officially changed in 1975 to the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride
Across Iowa, RAGBRAI, with Roman numerals used to designate the number of the ride.
John Karras retired from The Des Moines Register in 1984 after 25 years with the newspaper,
although he continued to host RAGBRAI until the end of the 2000 ride. Chuck “Iowa Boy”
Offenburger, a Register columnist, co-hosted the event with Karras from 1984 until 1998.
In 1991, Jim Green, a long-time Register employee, became RAGBRAI ride director and
made RAGBRAI known as “the safest and most enjoyable ride ever.” In 2005, T.J. Juskiewicz
became ride director and still serves in that capacity today.
National and international magazines, newspapers, reporters and photographers annually
converge on Iowa to cover the event. Several Iowa television stations provide coverage for
the week, and have produced a number of shows focusing on the ride. National television
networks also have sent news teams to Iowa for the ride, and radio stations and national
news wire services have provided daily reports.

RAGBRAI’S RIDE RIGHT PROGRAM
Each year the RIDE RIGHT committee selects key areas to promote specific safe-riding behavior in
order to continue to make RAGBRAI a safe and fun event. The RIDE RIGHT committee consists of
a group of volunteers from clubs and teams that are active supporters of bicycle safety issues.
®
The RIDE RIGHT committee decided in 1992 that the safety messages needed to be taken back
to the communities that we live in. The committee wanted to make their communities more cyclingfriendly. Efforts were made to bring the message into the next generation of cyclists by sponsoring
local bicycle safety rodeos and working with local law enforcement departments to get the entire
community involved.
In 1996, the program started promoting a safety video that was viewed by over 5,000 participants
at the starting town and on tour buses en route to RAGBRAI. We continue to offer this service
annually. Meetings will be held on Saturday, July 23.
For the 25th Anniversary of RAGBRAI in 1997, the RIDE RIGHT committee increased efforts toward
safe bicycling. New that year was the RIDE RIGHT Ambassador program. Representatives from
many bicycling clubs continue to be on the route every day and provide information and assistance
to all participants. The Ambassadors will be called upon to assist with accidents and other situations
that could endanger their fellow riders.
The message of bicycle safety and encouraging communities to become more bicycle-friendly
will again be taken to all overnight and pass-through towns along this year’s route. In conjunction
with the Iowa Highway Patrol, safety brochures and coloring books promoting safe cycling will be
distributed. Communities are encouraged to promote helmet giveaways and bicycle rodeos.

FRIENDS OF RAGBRAI
®
In 1989, this program was initiated to provide compatible businesses the opportunity to be a
Friend of RAGBRAI.
Friends of RAGBRAI are a welcome addition to the ride. Most have a presence, which is
requested through the local committee, while others provide in-kind service in some of the
pass-through communities. Friends of RAGBRAI display products, distribute literature, and
in some cases, sell retail items. They are present merely to help make RAGBRAI a more
successful event for the riders and for the communities.
The Friends of RAGBRAI are an official part of this event. The riders and communities along
the RAGBRAI route, and especially the overnight communities, find that Friends of RAGBRAI
are an asset to the ride.

GUIDELINES REGARDING THE USE OF THE
RAGBRAI TRADEMARK
®
The following are guidelines for communities regarding the authorized and prohibited
usage of the RAGBRAI name and logo. Prosecution will be sought against any
person(s) or parties who misuse the trademark or use it without authorization.
• General Trademark Statement
The marks and names, RAGBRAI®, “Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across
Iowa™,”RAGBRAI® XLIV, and RIDE RIGHT® are and shall be the exclusive property of
The Des Moines Register and Tribune Company.
The RAGBRAI and RIDE RIGHT logos are registered trademarks and cannot be used
without prior written permission of The Des Moines Register. All authorized uses
of these marks must carry this notice: “RAGBRAI is a registered trademark of and
licensed by The Des Moines Register and Tribune Company. All rights reserved.” Only
the 10 Official RAGBRAI Bicycle Shops and select FRIENDS of RAGBRAI have limited
permission to use these marks on t-shirts and those promotional items or promotional
purposes approved in writing in advance by
The Des Moines Register.
• News Purposes (By media)
The RAGBRAI trademarks may be used by news sources (including newspapers,
online, radio and television stations) if the use is part of a news story, but all uses must
include the “®” symbol on first reference. Official logos are available to the media upon
request.
Use of the marks in connection with the sale of videotape highlights, sale of overruns
or reprints, operation of an electronic bulletin board or computer data base (such
as a home page), or other business use, however, is deemed to be commercial and
therefore would no longer be considered “news.” Thus it would not be allowed without
prior written permission from The Des Moines Register.

REGISTER’S ANNUAL GREAT BICYCLE RIDE ACROSS IOWA™
Simply put, your local newspaper may create a bike ride special section (primarily so the
riders have an accurate map and a complete listing of things to do/see and places to eat),
but the advertisers who advertise in it may not use the RAGBRAI name or logo in their
advertisements without The Des Moines Register’s prior written permission. Please
contact T.J. Juskiewicz @ 515-284-8289 or [email protected] for additional information.
Television and radio stations may broadcast live at a particular location during the event, as
long as an advertiser does not financially support the time with RAGBRAI ads, i.e. “Stop in for
our RAGBRAI Sale.”
• Advertising (In/On/Surrounding the news)
Use of the trademarks, such as the official logo, to sell commercial advertisements or
commercial space and merchandise must be specifically authorized in writing in advance by
The Des Moines Register. Normally, that authority is granted as part of a Friends of RAGBRAI
package, where The Des Moines Register receives contractual assurances as to the use of
its marks and the products or services licensed, as well as compensation for such use of the
trademark.
If you are contacted by a company that wants to use the RAGBRAI logo or wants to sell or
advertise goods or services bearing the RAGBRAI logo or trademark, please contact The Des
Moines Register immediately. You are advised that The Des Moines Register has rights under
federal and state law which may be violated if you make an unauthorized use of the RAGBRAI
trademark or assist another in manufacturing, marketing or sale of goods or services that use
the RAGBRAI trademarks without permission of The Des Moines Register.
