As you will read elsewhere in this month's Fore N Aft we had a very successful “Hardway Race” in May
to kick off the Island Series. This year the race was very well coordinated between PBYC and SBSC,
thanks go to everyone at each club that made the event such a success both on the water and back
at the club & finish line. Special thanks to Al & Mindy for use of the motor home. Of course the fact
that we had wind just about all day and all boats finished before 10pm did a lot to help also. Just to
top it all off the event also made a nice financial contribution to each club to help out in that
department. I will not list all who helped, you know who you are…THANK YOU!!
One of the things we are doing this year is to cater events like the Opening Day and the “Hardway
Race” in house. So far this has had the effect of (in my opinion) raising the variety and quality of the
food, plus greatly reducing our financial outlay……result is we are holding our own in the financial
bottom line and maybe even showing a slight profit for the year…thanks for all your efforts. This
brings me to the point that while so far a lot of members have pitched in with preparing the food, the
organizing lead has primarily been taken by Cindi and to some extent Carol & Tom, this is not just for
the races but for all events. I am hopeful that in the coming months other members will choose an
event and take over the food organization…..we can get the help with the preparation, it is the lead
responsibility and organization we need. This would be helpful at races, monthly meetings and five @
five type of events…if we are to keep our momentum going this support from all our members is
essential. Remember Lynne Nelson is the galley manager and can assist with what we have on hand
in the kitchen.
Be sure to put the next General meeting on your calendar the date is June 26th and the program
presenter will be Zac Sunderland………you may remember that Zac was for a short time the youngest
singlehanded circumnavigator and will share the experiences of his remarkable voyage.
At the May General Meeting the Blue Ball of Happiness was not won because once again the winner
was not present….so it rolls over into June…you have to be there to win…….
You may be aware the our Vice Commodore Randy Buckingham will be setting sail towards the end of
July for new cruising grounds North of Ventura, one of the consequences of that is PBYC will need a
new bridge officer. If you have any interest in filling the void for the remainder of the year please let
me know…we can discuss what is involved.
One final note for this month……OUR PHONE WORKS AGAIN

Vice Commodore
Whew!! May is almost gone. The Hardway Race is over. Summer is around the corner.
Change is in the wind. Thanks to all who helped make the Hardway Race a success this year.
Favorable winds made it a competitive race with all but one boat being able to finish.
Memorial Day is next, with the start of summer BBQ's. Then, on June 5th, the annual VIM
swap meet in the parking lot. PBYC will be cooking and selling hot dogs, coffee, and sodas.
We will also have a spot you can place your maritime cast offs to sell. The rest of the month is
for fun. Hopefully these strong winds will abate, allowing for some boating weekends. The
annual Commodore's Race, held by VYC was postponed due to gale force winds on May 23rd.
It will be rerun on June 6th.
As for changes in the wind, many of you already know that Shawn has decided to retire this
summer from her teaching career in Los Angeles Unified School District. This also entails a
move for us to Vancouver-Portland. We each have a son in the area, and I will be helping one
of them in his real estate appraisal office. Shawn is going to take some time to decompress
and enjoy grandkids. We are taking our household goods up on July 1, and I am moving the
boat on July 19th, right after the Milt Ingram Race. I will be taking it the “hard” way, traveling
by sea. We will miss all of you and the Southern California area, but this will give us a chance
to be closer to some of our family. Ironically, Ma Cherie will be returning to her old homing
grounds. One of the prior owners had his hailing port in Coos Bay, OR.
Look for Laurence and Zac Sunderland at our June meeting. Zac will talk about his solo sail
around the world and present pictures. Laurence will also give us an update on Abby's current
trip around the world on a similar excursion. The date is June 26. Dinner at 6:00, and
program at 7:00.

Race Report
Richard Countess
HARDWAY RACE Records fell this year in the 30th annual Hardway race co-sponsored by SBSC and
PBYC. Boats sailing the coastal courses made record times as high winds prevailed, contrary to the
weather forecaster's predictions of 10 knots. The going was somewhat slower for the boats sailing the
67-miles Hardway course from Santa Barbara around Santa Cruz Island. We had 30 boats entered for
the race; two boats didn't start and only one starter dropped out. Incidentally, we had one more ORCA
multihull entrant than the Ensenada race. Posting a sizzling elapsed time of 3:37:46 over the 47 nm
course around Anacapa Island was Bill Gibbs' 52-foot catamaran, Afterburner. Despite doing an horizon
job on the other five multi-hulls, Bill managed to place only fifth on corrected time. The fastest spinnaker
boat was Mike Warns' Santa Cruz 50 Fifty-One-Fifty, which sailed the 47 nm course around Anacapa
Island in 5:41:07. He placed third on corrected time, just 2 seconds out of second place. The fastest boat
doing the 67 nm Hardway course, which saw some boats face 35-knot winds on the backside of Santa
Cruz Island, was Dr. Laura Schlessinger's J-120, Warrior, with an elapsed time of 10:18:08. The record
for the Hardway course was 7:59:30 set by Bruce Tabor's Jumping Jack Flash in 1998. In the nonspinnaker fleet, which sailed a 24 nm course, Randy Alcorn's Cal 29, Out Patient, posted the best time of
4:22:46. And like the other record setters, Alcorn failed to win his class on corrected time. The corrected
time class winners were Charles Browning's J-130, Bebe, that sailed the Hardway course; Dr. Dave
Chase's Fast 42, Uhambo, and Thomas Tunberg's J-24, Bullet, in the two spinnaker fleets; Verne Haller's
Catalina 320, R Escape, and Brent Swanson's Islander 29, Velero, in the two non-spinnaker fleets; and
Mitch Yount's Reynolds 21, Wimpy, in the multihull class. The club championship trophy was won by the
Santa Barbara Yacht Club with their top three boats finishing first, second and third in the Hardway class.
The other perpetual trophy winners were Warrior for first to finish the Hardway course, Bebe for best
corrected time for the Hardway course, Bullet for best corrected time for the spinnaker boats sailing
around Anacapa Island, and Velero for best corrected time for the non-spinnaker boats. The full race
results are posted on PBYC's website; the corrected finish times are presented below.
I would like to acknowledge the great support we received from both clubs: the SBSC members who
cooked chicken and brats Friday night and waffles and pancakes Saturday morning, and who served on
the race committee that started the race, with special thanks to Charles Kaska, SBSC's Vice-Commodore,
and Evan Caves, SBSC's principal race officer. I would like to thank the following PBYC members:
George Moore for lining up finish line volunteers (Ed Key, Rick Lunsford, Gerald Davies, and Jeff Greer),
Al and Mindy Siemens for providing their deluxe motor home for the finishing crew, Jim Lavagnino for
photos at the start and at the awards presentation, Carol Davies for the Saturday night chili, Cindi Mathieu
for the Sunday trophy awards breakfast with assistance from Ed Key, Genie Pang, Mindy Siemens and
Anne Wallman, Robin and Steve Whyte for bartending on Saturday, and Lou Wallman for bartending on
Sunday. I owe a special thanks to Susan for the production of the posters and Notices of Race, writing
the sailing instructions, handling all the paper work (entry forms, slip assignments, race results), and
selecting the trophies.

Notes from
the Editor
2010 is looking like a good sailing year. First good wind for NP-Ens, then good wind for
the Hardway. At least good wind for the medium way, for those of us choosing
Anacapa over Santa Cruz. There is no doubt that Santa Cruz is the much tougher and
longer course, but sometimes tough isn’t the most fun. I was pretty challenged my last
time on the back side of Santa Cruz. It’s nice we have choices. I brought our young
Italian house guest Sylvia along for her first multihull race. I think she had a good
time. We had a heck of a time passing 5150 before the wind came up, as they have a
big lee. There were some BIG puffs on the backside of Anacapa coming through the
gaps, but we were looking for them. And good wind all the way back allowing us to fly
a hull and hit 23+ knots of boat speed. (Where is Jim and his camera when we need
him?) Just about a perfect day by Afterburner standards. We were tickled with our
special award, “First to the Bar” from Robin. Came with a free beer. We were also
tickled with our new medium course record. No trophies this race, but you can’t have
everything.
Thanks to all the PBYC folk that make these races possible.

Bill Gibbs
