Annual Report – Missions Fest 2013
Dwayne Buhler – Executive Director / CEO
Each year I spend some time praying about the theme verse for our AGM; asking
the Lord to give us a theme that will guide our conversations as we deliberate and
talk about the ministry of Missions Fest. The words of Jesus in John 20:21
captured my attention as I thought of all that will be shared at this evening; “As
the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” (NIV)
The theme for Missions Fest 2013 was His Story Revealed, with a focus on the
growth of the global Church. Our speakers were Ramez and Rebecca Atallah
(Egypt), Gracia Burnham (Philippines / USA), Ajith Fernando (Sri Lanka),
Patrick Johnstone (England), Luis Palau (USA), and Nigel Paul (Canada).
Missions Fest 2013 celebrated the 30th anniversary of the movement, which began in
1984. The aggregate attendance of just over 35,000 people over the three-day
weekend was the fourth highest attendance. We had an incredible slate of speakers,
seminars, films, and filled 267 of the possible 270 booth spaces in the exhibition
hall. The Convention Centre staff commented that the move-in and move-out were
the best orchestrated movement of people and exhibitors that they had ever seen.
There was a good sense of God’s presence and many people commented on how
they connected with an agency, heard a message that impacted them, or were
impacted by the weekend. Once again, Christians from the Lower Mainland united
around the purposes of God and were blessed, just by being together.
The weekend started with our 30th Anniversary
Celebration Banquet, this year held on Thursday
night at the Victoria Chinese Restaurant in the
downtown core. Two hundred and twenty people
gathered to honor the founders of Missions Fest, with
a special presentation made to Richard and Arlene
Dodding. Charla Pereau and Patrick Johnstone, past
plenary speakers, brought reflections and a
challenge. We thank God for His faithfulness to the
vision of a small group of people who decided to see
what would happen if local churches banded together
to celebrate and focus on the Great Commission.
Thirty years later we still reap the blessing of their
vision and commitment to work in unity.
6
The weekend had something for every member of the family. Both the children’s and pre-school
children’s programs had intercultural presentations and were well attended. Our Friday Field Trip for
Christian schools was well attended. The 100+ seminars presented for adults and youth were wellattended (6,083 people), despite confusion over the reserved seating system that was implemented at
this year’s conference. There were 244 mission agency displays in the main exhibit hall and the 4th
annual Film Festival featured the Canadian premiere screenings of Father of Lights and La Montaña,
the well-known story of Russ Stendal and his ministry in Colombia.
The conference opened on Friday with a special time when Patrick Johnstone encouraged mission
agency representatives. Over 800 students participated in the Friday School Field Trip, where Gracia
Burnham shared her story of kidnapping by a rebel group in the Philippine Islands.
Music at Missions Fest 2013 followed the
Board’s directive to have representation from
three distinct groups: traditional, contemporary,
and ethnic groups. The Salvation Army Band led
Friday evening’s opening General Session, with
Andrea Tisher (First Baptist Church) and Jeremy
Johnson (South Delta Baptist) leading worship
on Saturday and Sunday. The special music of
the Korean Women’s Choir, Gospel favorites
from Darriel Menefee and the NW Pacific Mass
Choir, and the bluegrass rhythms of Ana Vandas
and This Old Mountain, were the Prelude of
Praise features.
The Youth and Young Adult rallies featured the music of the groups led by Ben Woodman & John
Fortune, as well as the Restoration Church Band. Club 67 was led by Capernwray students, who
helped with music and all aspects of the Friday and Saturday gatherings.
The Special Project for 2013 was called “Kits for Kids” UrbanPromise in
partnership with Child Evangelism Fellowship were blessed by the generosity of
those who supported the project. In total $1665 in gift cards was donated,
together with 70 boxes of healthy snacks, 272 mittens, 324 socks, 100 Bibles,
and 378 story books! These items were distributed to children at their camps and
after-school program, excited to receive the books in time for their Annual
Spelling Bee. The project demonstrated God’s love through word and action.
April Iguidez, Ministry Director for Urban Promise, passed along her thanks to
each person who participated in the project; adding that the children were
touched by the generosity and kindness of complete strangers.
Once again, we are thankful for our management team leaders, who coordinated and recruited
hundreds of volunteers that worked together to make this all happen. I am thankful for each leader
and their team of workers as they displayed what can happen when we set aside our differences and
work with each other. Groups of students from Capernwray Bible School, Pacific Life Bible College,
and Summit Pacific College came to help during the weekend. The “Gideon’s Army” of volunteers
once again served with graciousness and a Christ-like attitude. All of these groups, from different
denominations, cultures, and generations, are an incredible testimony to the Convention Centre staff
and those who come into the facility.
7
Missions Fest is indebted to the dedication and hard
work of the staff, as well as to volunteers that come in
during the year to help out in the office. Sharon,
Carol, and Claudia often go beyond the call of duty as
they work with our exhibitors and volunteers
throughout the year. Marianne Mendgen joined the
staff for three months before the conference. Many
others (too many to list here) come in during the year
to add their smile, as well as help out in very practical
ways. Thank you to you all!
2013 Finances
The financial reports that are included with this report show that we went slightly deeper into
debt. Just looking at the reports I think we need to ask what God is saying to us when:






40 of the 148 “Sponsoring Churches” did not contribute for the 2013 conference, 17 of these
we have not heard from for 2+ years.
While we communicated clearly that the conference costs $30 per person, our average
offering at the 2013 General Sessions was $4.70 per person. Compare this to 2012, when
attendance was lower, but the average per person was $5.94.
The demographic study conducted by Outreach Canada indicates that our two highest groups
of attendees are in the 15-25 and 55-65 age groups. The gap between people aged 25-55 is
something that we must look at seriously, as the financial viability of Missions Fest will
depend upon connecting with that age group.
It was encouraging to have non-conference donations increase this year, to a total of
$111,816. However, six individuals contributed over half of the total ($61,000), and we
cannot rely on the generosity of such a small number of people for future years.
Agencies continue to laud Missions Fest Vancouver as the best conference of its kind, yet just
over 50% of them responded by registering for the 2014 Conference, lower than the norm
(about 2/3 usually take advantage of early registrations discounts).
The same demographic studies that affect our attendance will also affect the agencies which
participate at Missions Fest. There is a gradual “graying” of the support base of mission
agencies, and few are taking the steps required to reach the 25-55 year old. These trends, if
not addressed, will result in an eroding financial base for the mission agencies which now
attend and support Missions Fest.
What is clear to me is this: Everybody loves Missions
Fest and says remarkable things about it, but paying for
it is another thing. We have not lived extravagantly nor
been poor stewards of resources. The staff took salary
cuts in order to allow for attending the 4Cs Conference.
We raised the most money ever raised in a single year
for the ministries of Missions Fest, but we still ended
with a negative balance. The bottom line is that we
spent more than we took in.
We ask you to pray with us as we communicate our
situation to churches, agencies and individuals. We pray
8
that there would be an overwhelming response. Ideally we would like to go into the weekend with our
bills paid and be able to tell the audience that their offerings will be used to go towards the planning
of the next year’s conference, not just to pay the current bill.
The number of sponsoring churches was up from 145 churches to 148 churches. This is a healthy
sign, as communication with churches and building relationship with church leaders is an essential
part of the work of the Director during the rest of the year. While relationships are hard to measure on
a balance sheet, they are an important part of the work we do, as we bring the churches of Vancouver
together under one roof.
Activities during the Year
Missions Fest is more than a once a year event, as there are several ministry opportunities that we
promote or partner with during the year.
Spring is a time that I am involved in teaching, both at the Perspectives course and in local churches.
These classes are an opportunity to serve churches and the Christian community. Similar teaching
opportunities occurred during the fall, including a seminar on the topic of Cultural Intelligence at
Pacific Life Bible College and Peace Portal Alliance Church.
In October Missions Fest hosted two days of seminars for pastors and church leaders. Michael
Cassidy of African Enterprise spoke on “The Church Jesus Prayed For.” Over 140 people attended
and positive feedback was given. In the fall of 2013 meetings have been arranged for September 23rd
and 24th, with local pastors leading sessions on “The Disciplines of a Pastor’s Life.
Meetings were held on Vancouver Island to investigate the possibility of planning an inter-city
mission celebration for 2013. Unfortunately the three cities that were looking at being involved in this
were not able to coordinate their calendars, and we will continue to seek a date in the Fall or early in
2014 to see if we cannot plan concurrent conferences in Victoria and Nanaimo.
Our Missions Fest seminars for local church missions committees will be held on June 15th,
presenting the I AM FILMMAKER seminar in a 6-hour format. This seminar prepares people to be
able to produce quality videos of testimonies, short-term mission trip reports, or other items. Taught
by industry professionals Phil Hood and Greg Meeres, the seminar has been a popular part of the
Saturday afternoon seminars presented by the Film Festival for the last two years.
As Director, I am also invited to teach or preach in several locations throughout the year. I taught the
final lesson of the Perspectives class in 2 different locations, spoke at 8 different local churches, and
gave classes at two Bible schools. I am available to speak at local churches throughout the year, and
welcome these opportunities to connect with your churches, pastors, and young adults that are sensing
God’s call on their lives in the area of missions.
2014 Update – Hidden in Plain Sight
Plans for the January 24-26, 2014 conference are well under way. We look forward to having Mark
Buchanan return, speaking about reaching one of the hidden people in our own back yard: the First
Nations of Canada. Beth Guckenberger of Back-2-Back ministries will speak on behalf of the 600
million abandoned or forgotten children in the world. Glenn Smith of Christian Direction in Montreal
is a world-renowned urban missiologist who will speak about reaching Quebec and the Francophone
9
world. Josh McDowell’s passion to reach young, Muslim scholars who are studying in North
American universities will be the focus of his speaking engagements. We are awaiting the
confirmation of a youth speaker, who has been associated with the Passion movement. A special
dance troupe of orphaned children from Cambodia, together with 200+ mission agencies, 100+
seminars, and the Film Festival will also be a part of the conference.
The Board will be meeting throughout this year to discuss making sure that our ministry continues to
reach and be relevant for youth and young adults. We pray that God would continue to bring
youthful-minded leaders that will help identify ways that we can celebrate what God has done in the
past, while championing emerging leaders with a heart for global missions.
I am grateful for the women and men who have served on the Board over this year (listed on page 3),
and especially would like to thank Mika Kostamo, Jamie MacDonald, Zachary Wylie, and Kathy
Wong for their years of service. Kathy will be stepping down from the board after having served the
maximum number of terms (3 two-year terms). Zachary Wylie has served as Board Secretary for four
years. Both Mika and Jamie have work and family commitments and will leave the board after two
years and four years, respectively. I want to thank each board member for their faithful service over
the years.
Missions Fest thanks the members of the Board of Reference for their participation. They are also
listed with our Directors on page 7. This non-governing body meets once a year to speak into the
ministry of Missions Fest and is comprised of pastors, mission leaders, and lay leaders with a history
of involvement in the conference.
Beyond 2014: A Personal Note
Over the last year both Rhonda and I have sensed a growing need to be listening to the voice
of God and be open to a change of ministry that would utilize our gifts and language skills. Our trip to
Spain, Morocco, and Portugal in 2011 opened our eyes to a region of the world that is lacking a
visible evangelical witness. I informed the Board of Missions Fest in March that I will not be seeking
a contract renewal following the 2014 conference, giving them notice in order to begin to look for a
replacement. The goal is to provide time for a healthy transition where a new Executive Director
would work with me for two or three months before the 2014 conference, and for a period of time
after the conference.
Pray for us as I work together with the Board during a year of transition. Part of this task is to
prayerfully determine what God would have Missions Fest to focus on in the next years. We ask you
to pray for us as we enter a discernment process to know God’s will for our lives, as well as for the
Board as they do the same for Missions Fest.
As Missions Fest looks ahead to the challenges of 2014
and beyond, we are reminded that it is God who works in
us and through us. We will continue to plan for the
conference and provide on-going training for local
churches and individuals. We ask God for His continued
blessing as we seek to be a blessing to the nations. We
anticipate celebrating all that the Lord will do.
Respectfully submitted,
Dwayne K. Buhler, Director / CEO
10
Report of the Board Chair
It has been a tumultuous year but we have many things to be
thankful for. Before I start discussing issues, I would like to thank
our amazing volunteers. All of you work hard with much
dedication, and I am continuously amazed. Thank you!
The conference went with no major issues. The relationship with
the Convention Centre continues to flourish. As well, overall
attendance was one of the best we have had.
Now for some challenges: First of all, a small number of donors
gave over $60,000 which brought us to an almost break-even point.
Without those donors, we would not have been able to pay the
bills.
Also, the average giving in the plenary sessions was only $4.70 per attendee even though we
clearly told people that it cost us $30.00 a person to put on the conference. We even tried a
couple of things to raise revenue, like having a suggested donation for the magazines of
$2.00. That failed miserably.
The demographic study done by Outreach Canada highlighted another issue. We have lots of
teens and early 20-somethings and another significant group between 55-65 but very few
people between the ages of 25-55. In the short term, this may not be an issue, but unless we
can attract attendees in the 25-55 age group, the long term viability of Missions Fest is
questionable.
We look forward with anticipation to Missions Fest 2014. The speakers have been confirmed
and the contract with the Convention Centre has been signed and we are gearing up for that
weekend. In addition, we have a number challenges.
As you already know, there will be a period of transition with 2014 being the last conference
directed by Dwayne Buhler. We are also aware that sometime next year Sharon is thinking
about retirement. That leaves us with replacing two of our key employees in the very near
future. The Board of Directors have set up a search committee, and the committee has
developed search criteria for the new CEO. The directors will keep you informed of
developments as soon as we can release the information. We hope to have someone in place
to transition into leadership and work with Dwayne early this fall.
With all these challenges, we really need your prayers. We trust that the Lord will intervene
in a miraculous way and provide solutions to each of our challenges, but until He does, pray!
Respectfully submitted,
Bruce Mills, Board Chair
