classroom instruction to prepare students to take the
Minnesota permit test and to take on the responsibility of
driving. Make-up lessons can be arranged with the instructor
at either the next class or at another of Safeway’s classroom
locations.
»» BEHIND-THE-WHEEL PHASE - After passing the permit test,
there are six hours of required driving lessons, which are
provided in three, two-hour lessons. Students are one-onone with instructors licensed through the MN Dept. of Public
Safety. Students can be picked up from and dropped off any
location. Detailed information about scheduling the behindthe-wheel lessons will be provided.
»» PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Safeway offers detailed information on its web site to
assist with understanding MN laws and requirements for
student drivers. It is critical that parents plan to practice
regularly with their newly permitted drivers. New state law
requires minimum of 50 hours of practice and a mandatory
driving log. Safeway offers monthly parent classes which
reduce student practice time requirement. Safeway strongly
encourages all parents to review its Parent Information
section at www.safewaydrivingschool.com.

fees are not included.

Extended Day
2016-2017 SCHOOL YEAR
GR K-5: YOUTH-FOCUSED AND CHOICE BASED
SITE HOURS: Mon-Fri
6:30 am-6:00 pm
Extended Day is the district’s school age care program
providing before and after school care and full-day
programming on non-school days and in the summer.
Students are actively engaged in a structured environment
to expand and develop their skills during their out of school
time hours. Designed to meet the needs of all families with
flexible scheduling including regular and drop-in contract
options.
Children have the opportunity to develop strong social skills
and positive relationships with peers, increase literacy and
math skills, participate in individual and group activities, and
work on special projects. Program activities include health
and fitness, service projects, arts and crafts, creative play,
languages and literacy, cooking, science, and much more.
In addition to this, off-site field trips and special events take
place throughout the year.
Because every child has special and unique needs, we
strive to work with families to create an atmosphere that
encourages growth. The partnership between parents, child,
school and staff is key to our success. To ensure quality and
compliance our staff/ student ratio is: 1 staff person per 12
kindergartners; and 1 staff person per 15 children for grades
1-6.
There will be opportunities for creative expression, decisionmaking and critical thinking. Students will have access to
a “coffee house” hang out space, classic arcade and billiard
games, art studio, and many other unique experiences.
Parents: for your convenience, a shuttle will run from all
elementary-based Extended Day sites (Oneka, Otter, Vadnais)
to Central Middle School for 5th-7th grade students. In
addition, families will have the option to give permission for
their student to walk/bike to FLEX or be picked up/dropped off
each day.
Students will receive free breakfast Monday through Friday and
free lunches Monday through Thursday.
Secure your child's spot in the program and receive a
registration fee discount during early bird registration,
March 14-April 1. Pre-registration is required. Additional
information, including rates, is available at www.isd624.org/
communityservices under the FLEX link.
