The YMCA unveils new brand strategy

F
or the first time in 43

USA has unveiled a
new brand strategy to increase
understanding of the impact
that YMCAs make in communities across the country. The
YMCA has the unique capacity
to address many of the challenges facing the nation today.
Through its new brand strategy
and framework, the nonprofit
will extend its reach into communities to nurture the potential
of youth and teens, improve the
organization, and a framework
that focuses resources on three
core areas: youth development, healthy living and social
responsibility. In another major
change, the nonprofit will be
called “the Y” to align with how
people most commonly refer to
the organization.

The new brand strategy – the
result of more than two years

the new brand strategy and
the opportunity to connect
more people in the areas of

said Shelly McTighe-Rippengale, Vice President Marketing,
Communications and Development, YMCA of San Diego
County. “There will be many
changes taking place at all of
our branches – we are building
momentum and this strategy
engages everyone from our
volunteers to our members and

The Y’s former logo had been
in place since 1967 and was the
organization’s sixth since its
inception. The refreshed logo,
with its multiple color options
and new, contemporary look,
better reflects the vibrancy of
the Y and the diversity of the
communities it serves. The new
logo’s bold, active and welcoming shape symbolizes the Y’s
commitment to personal and
social progress.
The YMCA of San Diego
County is the second largest Y
in the nation serving hundreds
of thousands of San Diego
County residents and employing more than 4,500 people.
Through a variety of programs
and services focused on youth
development, healthy living
and social responsibility, the Y
unites men, women and children - regardless of age, income
or background - to nurture the
potential of children and teens,
improve the nation’s health
and well-being, and provide
opportunities to give back and
support neighbors. The Y is
dedicated to improving the
quality of human life and to
helping all people realize their
fullest potential as children of
God through the development
of the spirit, mind and body.

“W
ow!” That was the surprised reaction by Robert
Tade, Commander of Legion Post 303 in El Cajon. He had just heard the news that he had been selected on
June 29 as California American Legionnaire of the Year. He
was officially presented the coveted award by U.S. Congressman Duncan Hunter at the post’s monthly meeting in July.
Rob, as he s known by his friends, has been a member
of Post 303 for almost 20 years and Post Commander for
three years. When he originally joined the post the monthly
attendance was under a dozen; this month’s meeting drew
over 70 people. He is known as an outstanding leader who
is interested in less talk and more action.
Tade is constantly on the move and doesn’t see his wife
of 40 years, Cheryl, as often as he did while serving in the
navy or working as a civilian for the navy at North Island.
His family, including four children and their spouses and
seven grandchildren, honored him by attending the award
ceremony.
Tade now “works” almost as many hours a week as a volunteer as he did in his regular job. His tasks include: umpiring
for Little League, serving on the S.D. County Grand Jury,
assisting the El Cajon Police Department and the E.C. Family
Service Center each on a one day a week schedule. He still
finds time to devote to his numerous American Legion duties
that take him to many cities throughout the state. He feels
that it is of utmost importance to assist fellow veterans. So,
along with several members of his post, he has volunteered
for the Stand Down for Homeless Veterans held annually
in Balboa Park.

Barona gets Gold: Barona Resort & Casino
recognized by U.S. Green Building Council
L
ast week, Barona Tribal
members, executives
and staff members of
Barona Resort & Casino were
recognized by the U.S. Green
Building Council - San Diego
Chapter, at a ceremony celebrating the resort’s Leadership
in Energy and Environmental
Design Gold certification for
Existing Buildings (LEED-EB)
from the organization.
Barona is the first Tribal
resort in the nation to earn
the internationally recognized
certification for the design and
operation of high performance
green buildings.
“As the first Tribal resort to
receive LEED Gold certification, Barona demonstrates its
commitment to the environment and leadership,” said
Doug Kot, executive director
of the USGBC - San Diego
Chapter. “An important part
of creating a sustainable future
in our community is retrofitting
existing buildings, which ultimately produce highly efficient
structures and save our natural
resources.”
For more than a year, staff
members have been working
toward certification under the
LEED-EB program, which
encompasses all aspects of
building management and
maintenance.
“We are honored to receive
this prestigious recognition
from the U.S. Green Building Council and think that it
is an important milestone for
Barona,” said Rick Salinas,
general manager of Barona
Resort & Casino. “LEED was
in its infancy when we built
our resort so the opportunity
to retrofit our building to highperformance green benchmark
is a major accomplishment for
our team.”
Buildings achieving LEEDEB certification must meet
minimum standards in critical
performance categories including energy efficiency, water
efficiency, waste management

County roots out crime
at problem properties
celebrated San Diego County Sheriff’s Department
A
program that has achieved success turning around
problem apartment complexes soon will be mandatory for
landlords whose rental properties generate frequent visits from
law enforcement.
At the request of Supervisor Dianne Jacob and Sheriff Bill
Gore, the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed an ordinance last week that would require certification in the Crime Free
Multi-housing Program for owners of rental dwellings that rack
up at least 10 calls for service in any three month period.
The certification requirement would apply only to properties
with a disproportionate number of service calls when compared
with similar rental properties.
Supervisor Jacob praised the Crime Free Multi-housing Program for making a dramatic dent in crime, particularly in Spring
Valley . The program pairs deputies with landlords to make
security improvements and deal with problem tenants. Deputies
train landlords to root out drug and alcohol-related crime.
“We’ve seen landlords create a whole new sense of community by making positive, quality-of-life changes to complexes,”
said Supervisor Jacob. “When a tenant signs a lease, that tenant
promises not to engage in illegal activity. If they do, they face eviction. This is the hammer we need to clean up communities.”
Spring Valley resident Debbie Gilly, a strong supporter of
the program, described living across the street from a complex
once plagued by street fights, riots, burglaries, mail theft and
physical violence.
“We suffered greatly for over two years at the hands of thugs,
criminals, drug dealers, gangsters and out-of-control teens that
terrorized our neighborhood,” said Gilly. “If it wasn’t for the brave
Sheriff’s Department, our neighborhood would still be infested
with these gangsters and criminals,” Gilly said.
The ordinance was crafted in consultation with the San Diego
County Apartment Association.

Jamacha Pipeline Project
The Jamacha Road Pipeline
Project is nearing completion.
When finished, the 5.1-mile
water pipeline will run from
Rancho San Diego to El Cajon.
Installation of the pipeline has
occurred in Rancho San Diego
and in some areas of El Cajon.
Crews from CCL Construction
will now connect the north and
south portions of the pipeline
along Gustavo Street and the
final stretch of Jamacha Road.
After pressure testing occurs,
final paving will take place.
Pressure testing of the smaller
12-inch PVC pipes is in progress along Jamacha Road, between Hidden Mesa Road and
Hillsdale Road. Pressure testing
of the larger 36-inch diameter
pipeline will occur in July and
August. In the interim, CCL’s
crews will continue to maintain
the temporary paving. Final
paving is scheduled for August.
The pipeline is anticipated to be
in service in late August 2010.

Q: How much money do I need to put down?
Twenty percent down is the traditional standby required by banks.
With the invention of mortgage insurance you can do as little as
5% down; with an FHA loan it can be as little as 3.5%.
And with special financing, the down payment can be $0.00.

CONNELLEY

In addition to a down payment, purchasers also need cash for
closing costs (the final costs associated with closing the loan).
Several newly emerging loan programs not only allow the purchase
of a home with no money down but also underwrite closing costs.

Not everyone, however, elects to purchase with little or no
money down. Less money down means higher monthly mortgage
payments, so most home buyers choose to buy with some cash up front.

Health… Just Common
Horse Sense
by Dr. Donald Adema
“I
will never fly a “red eye” again!” Mrs. A vehemently announced this as we were driving, half asleep, from Detroit
to Ohio for a wedding of one of my fine medical students and
now surgical resident. Why we were forced to take a midnight
flight will be recorded in the family journal that is only to be
shared after our wills are read to our survivors. UGH!!
The wedding witnessed was of the classic midwestern style of
my Dutch/Iowan family with the pink roses and enough lemon
aid that could lead a nondiabetic into ketoacidosis. The strength
of that tradition permeated the little clapboard church.
However the true strength of the event was noted while observing the bridal couple themselves. She is an intensive care nurse
educator and certainly is of the caliber to meet the demands of a
surgeon in training. He is entering his second year of residency
and was told to slow down a little as he really did have five years
to complete his surgical education and experience. Both are
grounded in a strong and mutual faith. Both are warriors in offering more than the single pharmaceutical or surgical approach
to their patients. Our tears of joy and hope were for their married
life and just a few were shed for our profession. Mrs. A and I
hope you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

ohn went to visit his 90 year old grandfather in a very secluded, rural area of Saskatchewan. After spending a great
evening chatting the night away, the next morning John’s grandfather prepared breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast. However,
John noticed a film like substance on his plate, and questioned
his grandfather asking, ‘Are these plates clean?’
His grandfather replied, ‘They’re as clean as cold water can get
em. Just you go ahead and finish your meal, Sonny!’
For lunch his grandfather made hamburgers. Again, John was
concerned about the plates, as his appeared to have tiny specks
around the edge that looked like dried egg and asked, ‘Are you
sure these plates are clean?’
Without looking up the old man said, ‘I told you before, Sonny,
those dishes are as clean as cold water can get them. Now don’t
you fret, I don’t want to hear another word about it!’
Later that afternoon, John was on his way to a nearby town
and as he was leaving, his grandfather’s dog started to growl,
and wouldn’t let him pass. John yelled and said, ‘Grandfather,
your dog won’t let me get to my car’.
Without diverting his attention from the football game he was
watching on TV, the old man shouted! ‘Coldwater, go lay down
now, yah hear me!

‘Predators’ – another rehash of the original
Review by Michael Black
I
n 1987, Predator arrived
with mixed reviews and
a lack of storyline and
excitement. However with
some success three years later,
Predator 2 followed and did
fairly well at the box office even
though the film was absolutely
horrible. Aliens vs. Predator
came out in 2004 and was a
critical disappointment. Aliens
vs. Predator: Requiem in 2007
was even worse. The new
Predators is a sad attempt at
rebooting an already used up
storyline.
The plot hasn’t changed. A
group of treacherous humans
are abducted from Earth and
dropped into an alien jungle,
and no on seems to know
how they got there or why.
They’re portrayed by a sea
of respectable actors. Royce
(Adrien Brody) is an American
ex-military soldier turned mercenary. Isabelle (Alice Braga) is
an Israeli Defense Force sniper.
Danny Trejo plays Cuchillo, a
drug cartel enforcer. Mombasa
(Mahershalalhashbaz Ali) was
a Sierra Leone RUF death
squad officer. Nikolai (Oleg
Taktarov), a Russian Spetsnaz
commando, and Stans (Walton
Goggins), a notorious, deadly
and unstable death-row inmate. Then there’s Hanzo
(Louis Ozawa Changchien),
a Yakuza assassin and Edwin
(Topher Grace), a physician.
At first Edwin doesn’t seem to
fit in this group but later it’s
revealed why later. Lawrence
Fishburne’s character is a
waste of time and just filler.
In terms of storyline this new
film is 1987 Predator all over
again. It sounds and feels like
the original where a group of
elite killers find themselves on
another planet being hunted
by a group of grotesque alien
hunters. The same background
music from the original is even
used.
A few twists are thrown in to
make the movie look different
from the original, making the
characters even more shady
and untrustworthy, and more
predators to gawk at, and
hunting alien dogs that get
the action started sooner. The
graphics are much better than
the original and the only thing
that saves the movie from
total disaster. Parents should
be aware that this film is very

gory and involves beheading,
exploding bodies and lots of
corpses.
The big difference between
the first Predator and this
reboot is the complete lack of
compassion for most of the
characters. In the end, I was
hoping that they were all killed
so this franchise would end,
but, Predators leaves the door
open for yet another sequel.

‘Despicable Me’ is a definite film to see
Review by Diana Saenger
I
t takes a few minutes to
get into this adorable
animated story by Spanish animator Sergio Pablos
before three little orphan girls
throw this movie into warm
and funny override. Despicable
Me is full of heart-warming moments and anxious adventures
– everything that keeps both
children and adults laughing
all the way through.
Miss Hattie (voiced by Kristen Wiig) tries the best she can
to take care of the kids in her
orphanage, but there is only
so many hours in a day and so
much room on a tired lap. She
desperately hopes someone will
adopt the little darlings. Little
does she know that when Gru
(voiced by Steve Carell) shows
up oozing with fatherly love,
he’s really a villain wanting
to further his plot to steal the
moon.

Gru needs access to the sleek
outer space-looking home
of Vector (voiced by Jason
Segel), and nothing seems to
work. Until the day when he
sees Vector allow the girls in
when they come to sell cookies. With his evil plot thickening, he brings Margo (voiced
by Miranda Cosgrove), Edith
(voiced by Dana Gaier) and
Agnes (voiced by Elsie Fisher)
home. Gru’s snide, mean and
short-tempered. The girls wish
he were nicer to them, especially longing for a good-night
hug or kiss, but Gru can’t relate
to those things. How can attending ballet lessons be more
important than the work of a
genius?
Despicable Me’s animation
is superb. The human-like
characters were designed by

Goodrich who designed the
characters for Ratatouille.

people. The 3-D is a kick every
minute, causing even more
laughs or aah’s when something appears to jump out of
the screen. John Benson, the
3-D specialist on Coraline,
actually moved to Paris to
work on the movie. Mac Guff,
a Paris-based digital visual effects studio, was chosen to animate the screenplay by Cinco
Paul and Ken Daurio, writing
partners who also penned
Horton Hears a Who!
There is so much to enjoy
about this film. The characters
are easily likeable and the voice
cast does a great job instilling
them with believability. Carell,
who worked hard to find an
unrecognizable voice, looked
forward to playing a villain but
was attracted by other aspects
of Despicable Me. “The story
is really sweet,” Carell said.
“That’s what drew me to it. As
crazy as Gru sounds and as
diabolical and mean and awful
as he is, there is humanity to
him. People aren’t either good
or evil…there’s always some
good to evil.”
Julie Andrews is natural and
occasionally ornery as Gru’s
mother. Jason Segel is perfect
as the geeky brat Vector. All
three adorable girls aren’t cutter-cookie; each one has her
own personality. Gru soon
realizes little Agnes with those
big round eyes loves unconditionally. The girls begin to melt
his exterior of steel.
The brilliant story is full of
humor, which includes the constant presence of the minions
– a stubby yellow army that
look like large pill capsules with
legs. Not only are they predominate in the film, the little
scene-stealers are now jumping
off the TV screen in pancakes
and other commercials.
What I liked best about Despicable Me is it charmed me
from beginning to end. The
drama is as much apparent as
the humor, but it’s the delightful characters that enchant.
This first-rate production is
destined to be among the
Academy Award list next year
for Best Animated Film. Take
the entire family – even the
grandparents. You’ll want to
see it twice.

here is green.
The story is about an Earth astronaut (voiced by Dwayne
Johnson) who lands on Planet 51. Everyone is afraid of him
because they believe he’s come to starts a war. Lem (voiced
by Justin Long) is a 16-year-old who likes to gaze at stars. He

EXTENSION OF TIME for Lien contract TO COMPLETE IMPROVEMENTS FOR COUNTY
OF SAN DIEGO TRACT NO. 3832 UNITS 6-10 AND TRACT NO. 4553-1 (tm 3832-12),
LOCATED IN ALPINE PLANNING GROUP AREA (District 2). This is a request to extend, for
a period of two years, the performance completion date of the lien contract improvement

Dear Dr. Luauna
work in a retail convenience store,
I
my co-workers have been here
longer than me, but they are stealing
from the owner and constantly talk
about him behind his back. They
tried to persuade me to take products,
too, saying it’s “Ok,” because we are
underpaid. I am a Christian, what
should I do?
Signed, Walking On Eggshells
Dear Walking on Eggshells,
As a Christian you are going to have to stand for righteousness. Do not take anything that does not belong to you;
no matter how your co-workers justify themselves, it is still
stealing. You are going to have to demonstrate a strength of
character; when you witness them stealing you should tell them
you are going to notify your boss. You should also document
the situation in detail; then follow through with the owner. He
needs to know, this is not only a moral failure, it is illegal and
seriously violates God’s principles. I Corinthians 6:9-10
When it comes to the gossip and slander, do not participate;
no matter who they are talking about. If someone freely gossips or slanders a person TO you; they will freely gossip and
slander ABOUT you. Gossip and slander is very destructive;
and ungodly. Proverbs 15:4, “A wholesome tongue is a tree
of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.”
Do not be surprised at the outcome; there may be repercussions from your co-workers, stand strong; integrity and
character are built through choosing righteousness. Deuteronomy 20:19, “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today
against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing
and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your
descendants may live;”

memories remembering the
fun, passion, dedication, and
sincere love Don Coryell and
his late wife had for them and
each other.
After a heart-warming rendition of Amazing Grace sung
by Stephanie Kelly, and the
showing of a video depicting
the Coryell family and Don’s
football life, Ron Roberts
representing the San Diego
Board of Supervisors then
proclaimed July 12, 2010
officially as “Don Coryell
Day.”
Then unbelievable, incredible testimonies were
revealed from Coryell’s former players and coaches
Joe Gibbs, Jim Hanifan,
John Madden, Dan Fouts,
and Fred Dryer that had the
arena full of tears and laughter, describing their personal
encounters and antics with
the “Mad Scientist,” and the
football genius also known
as “Air Coryell.”
A former Army paratrooper,
Don Coryell exhibited the
same intensity in the front office, at practices, and on the
football field as he did in his
military career, combining the
same passion and dedication
to the football organization
as he did for his family members.
The 2-hour long ceremony
ended with a spiritual awakening closing message from
Miles McPherson who proudly
wore his Chargers jersey, the
same number #24 playing for
Coach Coryell.
When leaving this event everyone felt a mixture of happy/
sad emotions, and pride for the
life achievements, and legacy
of Don Coryell.
The Coryell family wishes to
thank Ed and Jean White, Bob
Moosebruger & SDSU Athletics,
Dean Spanos, A.G. Spanos, Bill
Johnston and the San Diego
Chargers, Miles McPherson &
the Rock Church, the San Diego
Hall of Champions, SDSU President Stephen L. Weber, Sally
Roush & SDSU, Steve Duich,
Dennis Wise, Mike Ibe, & Scott
Presley from the Don Coryell
Scholarship Committee.
John Madden, Joe Gibbs,
Fred Dryer, Dan Fouts, Jim

the wonderful doctors and staff
at Grossmont Hospital, Golden

168 pound-foot of torque. If
this is too much power there
is a smaller engine that produces 148 horsepower and
135 pound foot of torque. Now
when it comes to transmissions
look at the chart closely. The
6-speed manual transmission
only comes on the Sport and
Grand Touring models, and the
5-speed manual transmissions
on the smaller engine equipped
Mazda 3s. An automatic fivespeed is an option across the
line of Mazda 3s.
My test vehicle came with
the larger engine and the optional 5-speed automatic. Even
though I’m not a fan of automatic transmissions Mazda
has done a stellar job with this
5-speed automatic, and it can
shift manually.
The steering wheel is leather

car is a blast to drive. No matter
how old one is it brings out a

The Mazda 3 2010 redesign
is great. Whether looking on
the outside or inside, it’s all
appealing. Sitting in the driver
seat is very comfortable thanks
to 8-way power adjustments
for the driver and wrapping
the seats in leather was a nice
touch. The dash is well done,
and the night time driving is
pleasant to the eye thanks to
a red-blue illumination system
that relaxes while driving. The
car comes with a center console
with storage and 12 volt receptacles for added equipment.

back seat is comfortable, lays
flat for added storage and the

any project.
Other standard features
worth mentioning include:
Dynamic Stability Control,
Traction Control, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic on/off
leveling Bi-Xenon headlights,
leather wrapped seats, 60/40
split rear seats, heated front

front and rear bumpers, A/C,
power windows and door
locks, keyless entry and no
ignition key.
Safety is a key factor in Mazda vehicles. Mt tester’s mileage was 22 city, 29 freeway
and with the smaller engine
expect to get 25 city and 33
freeway. The Mazda 3, bases
out at $15,345 and tops out
at around $22,145. My tester
came in at $26,240.
I would put this car in my garage if I had room as it’s a great
investment. My only complaint
would be on the base warranty, three years 36,000 miles
– come on Mazda, you can do
better than that! Make this a
complete package, kick up the
base warranty. Otherwise….

Helping homeless dogs
A
A dog’s life-in many
cases-may be improving, thanks to a
sweet singer and an unusual
program.
The program
Every year, nearly 4 million dogs end up in shelters
and breed rescue organizations, which is why Pedigree
is launching its sixth annual
Adoption Drive. The program
focuses on helping dogs in
need through a variety of efforts that help generate awareness, food and funding.
The singer
The singer is country music star Carrie Underwood.
Because of their shared belief
that all dogs deserve a loving home and Underwood’s
outstanding advocacy for
adoptable dogs, the Pedigree
Brand is sponsoring her “Play
On Tour,” to highlight dog
adoption.
“I can’t imagine life without
my dog Ace,” said Underwood. “Showing your support
is easy; just become a fan, help
a dog.”
Getting involved
Dog lovers who want to do
their part to help can become
a fan of Adoption Drive on
Facebook at www.facebook.
com/pedigree. For each new
fan, the pet food company will
donate a bowl of food to help
feed shelter dogs nationwide.
While on the Facebook
page, dog lovers can also
show their support by donating
money to help find dogs loving
homes, a portion of which will
be matched by the brand, up
to $500,000. All donations go
